Welcome to our Spring/Easter magazine. I’m writing this letter to you in lovely sunshine, a blue sky, not too much cloud and not so cold that I have to wear a thick jumper. Long may it continue. Spring has a real positive feel to it, with flowers and tree blossom starting, warmer days breaking through and lots of fun days out to look forward to in the school holidays. Do look through all our hundreds of listings. Some of them are free to enter but all include contact details so do check the events before visiting. We prepare our listings a long time in advance and details do change. Spring is a busy time of the year. Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday is on 22 March. Easter Weekend is 10-13 April. The London Marathon is on Sunday 26 April. Brighton Fringe is from 1-31 May. Then there’s St Patrick’s Day on Tuesday 17 March and St George’s Day on Thursday 23 April. Not forgetting Save the Frogs Day on Saturday 25 April! Don’t forget that the May Day Bank Holiday has changed from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May to celebrate the 75th VE Day anniversary. Whatever you are celebrating, enjoy the next few weeks. We always have lots of great competitions for you to enter but sometimes we can’t give the prizes out to the actual winner as they haven’t included contact details for themselves. We don’t pass contact details on to any other companies so please do remember to include them with your competition entries. Entries can be sent by post or by email. See our Competitions Page for more details. We’ll be back the week beginning Monday 11 May. Happy Easter!

Turn Your School NHS Blue To mark the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, 2020 has been designated International Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Getting your school involved in the celebrations could help support your local hospital’s NHS Charity and inspire young people to choose nursing or midwifery as a career. Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in Kent employs over 1,730 midwives and nurses. Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Charitable Fund is the Trust’s dedicated charity supporting Maidstone Hospital, Tunbridge Wells Hospital and Crowborough Birth Centre. Donations help to enhance the patient experience in all sorts of ways from funding wall mounted toys and chairs in waiting rooms to medical equipment and memory boxes for bereaved families. Why not • Turn your school’s next dress down day blue in exchange for donations? • Take part in ‘NHS Big Tea’ during July and par-‘tea’? • Adopt #TeamMTW as your school’s chosen charity of the term or year? • Ask them to deliver a free charity talk to your school’s assembly • Text MTWMIDWIFE or MTWNURSE to 70085 and donate £5 (texts cost £5 plus one standard message rate) For more information contact Laura Kennedy, Fundraising Manager, via laura.kennedy8@nhs.net. #YearOfTheNurseAndMidwife
Paramedic Chris
Tim Parsons, who is chaplain to the ambulance service at Medway station has published a new series of children’s books aimed at younger primary age children. The episodes of ‘Paramedic Chris’ are based upon real emergency calls which Tim has attended as part of his work. The first book is based upon a hoax call and the second is based upon a call out to an elderly patient suffering from loneliness. Book three has just been published and is based upon bullying. It’s called ‘A Sorry Bully’ and tells the story of a visit Paramedic Chris makes to a primary school. The books are available from high street and online book sellers and give children an insight into the work of the ambulance service and the issues which they face. In the latest report looking at the size of our bird populations, the wren tops the list with 11 million pairs across the UK. The wren is a very shy bird and one of our smallest so you don’t see them very often but they’re definitely there in our gardens and parks. You’re much more likely to hear it. In proportion to its size, the wren has the loudest song of any British bird. The ‘Population Estimates of Birds in Great Britain and the United Kingdom’ report shows that the wren continues to hold the title of our commonest bird. The last report in 2013 also had the wren at the top of the list but with a population of just over 8.5 million pairs. Wren numbers are known to fluctuate according to environmental conditions and it may be that generally milder winters are benefitting one of our smallest birds. The top five commonest birds are wren, robin, house sparrow and woodpigeon with chaffinch and blackbird sharing the number five spot.

Why Role Play Is Important for All Children
Every child loves to play make believe, but studies have shown that it’s also vital to normal child development. Through role play, children expand their understanding of themselves and others. Role play also helps them develop language skills and discover leadership ability. By encouraging social interaction and problem solving, it enables children to gain confidence and develop empathy too. At just 18 months, children begin to act out what they’ve seen adults do and throughout early childhood, pretend play helps them make sense of the world and express emotion. As we are increasingly drawn to technology for entertainment, role play provides a much needed opportunity for children to explore their imaginations and develop crucial skills. Little Street play centres encourage children from 1 – 7 years old to investigate, explore and experiment in a little world for big imaginations. High quality, clean and safe, Little Street centres enable parents to engage with their children in play, fostering a sense of connectedness. Many parents and carers say that they enjoy playing at Little Street as much as their child! The centres also provide an ideal opportunity for childminders to carry out observations and for home educators, nurseries and schools to incorporate a trip that’s both great fun and linked to the EYFS. Visit www.little-street.co.uk for more information about your local centres in Sevenoaks and Maidstone.

This Easter sees the triumphant return of the Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, one of the country’s leading festivals of performance for young people. Launched in 2008, the festival now welcomes some of the UK’s leading theatre companies presenting work for families and children – and this year is no different. Highlights of the programme, which runs from 5 to 19 April, include big names like Rapunzel and, CBBC favourite, Sarah and Duck, alongside a host of new shows. Little Darling, which launches the festival on 5 April, tells the story of Michael Darling, brother to Wendy and one-time friend to Peter Pan, who finds himself all grown-up and yearning for those days when he could fly in Neverland. Meet Me A Tree, from the acclaimed Hurly Burly Theatre Company, is a new opera for the very youngest theatregoers. Roald Dahl and the Imagination Seekers, specially commissioned by Puffin Books, is an interactive show that imagines a world where Roald Dahl’s stories are disappearing from the bookshelves and from the minds of children. With performance workshops in drama, clowning and puppetry also planned, alongside a host of other shows, plus a circus finale from Cirque Enfant to close the festival, this year’s line-up is looking as impressive as ever. Greenwich could be the number one family destination for the long Easter holidays. For more information about Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk.

responsible for a larger group that is counting on you to do your part, so they can do theirs.” At the end of the day, the transferable skills a child learns from performing may not be nearly as important as the experience of performing itself. Simply being part of the performance process, your child will be exposed to a new way of thinking and doing. That alone is a success to be proud of.
How the Performing Arts Benefit Children
Children, who perform, gain skills that extend far beyond the standing ovation. Research shows that children who sing, dance, act and play tend to have enhanced cognitive, motor, and social development too. Stagecoach know that the act of performing on stage can enrich your child’s life in all sorts of surprising ways. Performance skills equip children with the ability to “think on their feet”, using their creativity and imagination. When the play goes wrong, children learn to come up with quick solutions to cover up mistakes and work as a team. We all have moments when we feel nervous. Feeling nervous before performing is completely natural. Children learn to use nerves positively, which can put them at a huge advantage in big life moments. Hearing the audience clap at the end of the show is an incredible feeling. Yet it’s more than just the ego boost from the fans. Any type of performance requires teamwork to succeed. At Stagecoach, children learn that “It’s not just you on stage. You are

Spring Adventures Fun Days Out with the Family
Spring at The Historic Dockyard
Spring has officially arrived at The Historic Dockyard this Easter. The new season means warmer weather (fingers crossed!) and longer days, so break out your sunnies and let the kids release some of that stored up energy. Get outside and dive into a school holiday packed with maritime adventure. Back by popular demand, Doc.Yard returns with a new ‘spring’ extravaganza (between 4 and 11 April). Explore the science behind forces and mechanics through fun activities and live demonstrations that will keep the whole family entertained.
Easter Family Fun
Look and listen for the signs of spring around the Dockyard on the Easter trail and enjoy hands-on craft activities in No.1 Smithery (between 14 and 19 April). Whether you’re stepping aboard HMS Gannet, awaking the crew by ringing HMS Cavalier’s bell, descending into the depths of HM Submarine Ocelot or being shown the ropes by the Master Ropemaker, signs of spring are bursting up throughout the historic site. Stroll around The Dockyard’s green spaces and see the daffodils blooming and hear the bees buzzing. The Commissioner’s Garden makes the perfect spot to sit quietly and watch nature come out to play. All activities are included in your entry ticket. To spring into action and book your experience, visit thedockyard.co.uk. And that’s not all - The Festival of Steam and Transport is back for Easter Sunday and Monday (12 and 13 April). Anything goes for this event. Whether you’re a steam fanatic, a classic car collector, a steampunk follower or you’re just looking for a fantastic family day out, this Festival has it all.
Hop into Easter Fun at Hever Castle
Family fun at Hever Castle and Gardens throughout the Easter holidays promises to put a spring in your step. Hunt for the colourful carrots and the Hever bunny in their fun free Easter trail, or take part in an Easter egg hunt in the grounds. Each child will receive a chocolate for completing the trail and a mini chocolate egg for each Easter egg they find. Take part in an Easter themed trail in the Castle to learn about creatures that hatch and create an egg-shaped decoration to hang on Hever’s Easter tree.

Step into Spring at the Weald of Kent Country Craft Show
Blosom and Blooms
Spring is blossom time in the countryside as the trees and bushes come alive after the long winter. Blossom is also an essential source of nectar and pollen for our pollinating insects, whether from fruit trees in an orchard, or hedgerow flowers such as blackthorn, hawthorn or crab apple. In most cases, fruit trees are not self-pollinating and rely on insects, particularly different types of bee, to do that job for them. Pollinators help to set the fruit without them the fruit doesn’t form very well, remaining small and often dropping before fully ripening. Go on your own flower viewing adventure as you take a stroll through the woods and gardens. You could visit a National Trust garden and discover the orchards and beds in their lovely gardens. The orchard at Chartwell is a charming part of the garden which is also home to their wildflower meadow come summer. There are a large variety of British apple trees in blossom towards the end of April, including the Winston apple, named after Sir Winston Churchill. The young cherry trees at Emmetts Garden, Prunus fugenzo, are shaped into an unusual ‘lollipop’ style and come into flower in the first or second week of May. Their beautiful pink blossoms are underplanted with a carpet of pink, red, white and black tulips that are planted to flower along with the cherry trees, for a truly arresting sight. The blossom at Scotney Castle greets you as you walk through the tunnel of its dappled shade into the garden towards the Old Castle. Smallhythe Place has an incredible orchard packed full of over 30 different varieties of apple plus pear, plum and Medlar trees. Photo credit: National Trust Images/Nina Elliot-Newman
The Weald of Kent Country Craft Show will transform the grounds of Penshurst Place from 1 to 3 May. Here’s what you need to know about this fun, family, festival day out. As true British days out go, you can’t get much more refined than the Weald of Kent Country Craft Show. From artisan crafts – think beautiful pottery, hand-crafted garden sculptures and exquisite jewellery – to kids’ activities, it’s very much a family affair. If you hop on down to Jump In Trampoline Park in Tonbridge this Easter there will be no shortage of egg-citing activities to get your teeth into. Everything from eggs, cakes and even pizza will be served up for some eggs-traordinary fun, including egg hunts and Easter cup cake decorating (running alongside the toddler sessions). Visitors during the school holidays are being invited to roll up their sleeves for a Pizza Master Class. In the new Lunch and Jump sessions, the pizza chef will instruct the children in the art of pizza making, including choosing their own toppings. While the pizza is cooking, there’s time for a fun jumping session before devouring their creations. Between Good Friday and Easter Monday, there’ll be the chance to bag some chocolate booty in free egg hunts around the site, led by Peter Rabbit and his friends. Older jumpers can add a spring to their step by joining in the cool new Under 16 Ibiza Rocks Club Nights. Enjoy trampolining, hot dogs and slush to get the joint really jumping! Visit Jump In Tonbridge at www.gojumpin.com/locations/trampoline-park-tonbridge. You’ll also find more information about the Club Nights available on the website.

It would be easy to take for granted that we study and work in a very special place, but it is wonderful to have the hard work and constant striving for excellence in all that we do underpinned by the findings of such an eminent public body as ISI. Thank you to every member of the school community who played a part in securing such a wonderful outcome from this inspection”. Maidstone Grammar School for Girls
Primary Times spoke to the Head Students from Maidstone Grammar School for Girls. They told us, “Secondary school is a large and important part of a young person’s life, and here at MGGS, we believe it should be both rewarding and enjoyable. We have grown as people at MGGS, developing not only our knowledge, but our interests, hobbies and confidence as well. “We feel privileged to be learning in such a closeknit community where we are provided with so much encouragement and so many academic resources. From the Mary Smith library, to support sessions run by departments across the school, to the teachers themselves, we feel fortunate to have access to this education so freely and easily. Using these resources, we have all been able to expand our knowledge both inside and outside of the classroom. “If you talk to any of the students at MGGS, they will tell you how proud they are to be part of the school’s community. Whole school events such as Rag Week, House Arts and Sports Day are all important parts of the school’s traditions that we continue to enjoy every year. Being involved in all aspects of MGGS life encourages a strong community spirit within our school, showcases the many extra-curricular talents of our fellow students, and provides an opportunity for all students to try new things. “The memories we have gained from our time at the school, and the values that have been instilled in us here, will be with us for the rest of our lives. Where we are now in our final year at our school, you are just beginning! We look forward to welcoming you in Year 7, and hope that one day you can look back fondly at your time here as we do.”
King’s Rochester Celebrates Excellent Inspection Results
When the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) team carried out their rigorous, routine inspection of standards at King’s Rochester at the end of January, their conclusions were summed up in one word – Excellent! All three parts of King’s - Nursery and Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School were scrutinised for the quality of their work with pupils regarding academic achievement, personal development and wellbeing. Findings in every section were first-class. Primary Times spoke to 20

The open morning, on Saturday 25 April, is a school day for pupils so it is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of life at St Joseph’s. There will also be a showcase with pupils demonstrating skills they’ve learnt in specialist lessons such as music, dance and speech and drama. Listed 55th in the Sunday Times Top 100 Independent Primary Schools in England 2019, St Joseph’s offers a first-class education that meets the needs of every child. This is balanced with ensuring pupils are offered a range of life experiences to become independent learners who are morally, socially and culturally prepared for the ever-changing world that awaits them. The school is conveniently located in Gravesend, a five-minute drive from Gravesend Train Station and 15 minutes from Ebbsfleet International.
