Welcome to the first half term issue of the year. For all our new readers we publish two weeks before each school holiday so once you see us appear in school you know a break is on it’s way. There are so many things to do during half term from activities in local parks and family friendly farms, sports clubs, craft clubs, multi activity day camps, museums, galleries and so much more. This half term magazine also covers Halloween and Fireworks Night. Whatever you end up doing, have fun! We prepare our listings a long time in advance so do remember to check each event before turning up, especially with all the Covid19 uncertainty. If you’re going to have some fireworks then read the following from the British Fireworks Association. • Do not buy fireworks from unlicenced retailers. These fireworks may be unsafe and illegal • Only buy fireworks that comply with current safety standards • Always keep fireworks in a closed box. Take them out one at a time and close the box. • Never put fireworks in your pocket • Be considerate. Let your neighbours know you will be having a display, especially if they are elderly or they have pets or children • Avoid setting fireworks off late at night, particularly if it is a school-night • Ensure your pets are safe • Carefully follow the instructions on each firework • Never go back to a lit firework unless the instructions advise otherwise • Never throw fireworks; it is dangerous. • Light fireworks one at a time, at the end of the fuse, and at arm’s length • Light sparklers one at a time and wear suitable gloves, even when lighting them • Never give sparklers to a child under the age of 5• Never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire. Pantosaurus and the Power of PANTS Margaret Gallagher, NSPCC Service Head of Local Campaigns, tells Primary Times readers about the NSPCC’s new book. “Since the NSPCC launched its Talk PANTS campaign in 2013, it has sparked over 1.5 million conversations between adults and their children to help keep them safe from abuse. “The campaign’s mascot is the bright yellow dinosaur called Pantosaurus. He already has his own animated music video and now he has his own book! The very first book we’ve ever published at the NSPCC. “Titled Pantosaurus and the Power of PANTS, the book was launched following a crowdfunding campaign that took place last year which saw NSPCC supporters raise £46,440 for the project. “The book, written by Rebecca Girlings and illustrated by Fhiona Galloway and Jamie Nash has been published in partnership with Ladybird. There’s even going to be an audio book, voiced by actor and NSPCC Ambassador for Childline, Natalie Dormer. “The book will help children learn about the PANTS rules which aim to help keep them safe from sexual abuse. From P through to S, each letter of PANTS provides a simple but valuable rule - that their private parts are private, their body belongs to them, and that they should tell an adult they trust if they’re worried or upset. “In the book, children will read about Pantosaurus getting a new pair of pants and Dinodad tells him that they will give him special powers. Pantosaurus then experiences a problem at school and just as Dinodad told him, his super pants give him the power to speak up. “You can get your copy from selected Matalan stores or at www.matalan.co.uk, selected Blakemore Retail SPAR stores or our NSPCC online shop and all profits from the sale of this book will support our vital work. “This bright and playful picture book is perfect for reading with younger children. Get Ready for a Viking Encounter Wildwood Trust is giving Kent school pupils the chance to learn about history from its very own Norse warrior. Dressed in authentic costume, Erik the Green, who lives at Wildwood near Canterbury, is taking time out from looting and pillaging to visit local schools to teach them all about his life in the Middle Ages. Schools who book a visit will get to see how Erik prepares for an expedition and which weapons he’ll be taking with him. They’ll learn the difference between a seax and lang-seax and hear what Erik does when he’s not raiding monasteries for plunder. The 15-minute taster sessions, which are free of charge and available to book for every Friday, are part of a move to highlight the park’s Living History workshops. Delivered by presenters in full historical costume, the Living History workshops at Wildwood, encourage pupils to take part in authentic hands-on demonstrations, such as painting cave art, weaving with trollens and even fire lighting. Wildwood offers four Living History workshop options in total - Stone Age, Saxons,Vikings and Medieval, with Roman and Tudor modules in development. History Tours are also available to show how our ancestors interacted with animals. There is no obligation to book a Living History Workshop following a free 15 minute taster. Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity) is launching a brand new, digital learning and entertainment hub to showcase the “Power of Play” and how it helps children cope with life’s challenges, big or small. The hub is packed full of free inspiring ideas, spectacular stories and fun activities to bring the incredible power of play to children and families. Everyone can access the hub at www.gosh.org/the-power-of-play. New stories on the Power of Play hub show play helping household names like Beano’s Dennis and Gnasher overcome difficult situations. Play features in re-imagined classics including the first new Peter Pan story from GOSH Charity in 15 years. Alice, Tweedledee and Tweedledum star in a brand-new poem, narrated by Matt Lucas. A brand-new Horrid Henry animation, and an audiobook from CBeebies’ JoJo & Gran Gran will also be available for families on GOSH Charity’s new digital Power of Play hub from October. The free animations, audiobooks and activities will help parents and children deal with themes including loss, loneliness, sadness, illness and isolation, which many children have experienced during the pandemic. Life’s everyday challenges like making new friends or moving to a new environment such as a new school are also addressed through the lens of play. GOSH’s dedicated hospital Play Team, the largest in Europe, use their skills every day to support seriously ill children from across the UK to understand and cope with their treatment and recovery. This expertise has shaped each story, activity and idea on the Power of Play hub. Matt Lucas, who narrates the new “Dee Without Dum” told Primary Times, “What is Tweedledee without Tweedledum? As we discover in this beautiful new poem, he is worried and anxious at being far away from his much-loved brother. It was a moving experience to step back into the characters of Dee and Dum once more, and share their feelings with other children and parents who might have struggled with being far away from their loved ones, especially during the last 18 months. I hope the raucous, playful game that Alice introduces them to in this poem will inspire parents and children alike to turn to play as a way of coping during times of sadness.”

The Royal British Legion, together with the National Literacy Trust, has launched a new range of free Remembrance teaching resources to help children and teenagers understand the importance of Remembrance and its relevance to all of us today. Designed for use in school and at home, pupils can discover how Britain’s national Remembrance traditions have evolved, engage in different community and national commemorations, and be encouraged to imagine what Remembrance might look like for them in the future. The RBL’s 2021 teaching kits include new assembly plans, whole school projects and stories featuring awardwinning authors Terry Pratchett and David Olusoga, each coming with helpful notes for parents and educators. The academic resources will enable students to learn how the poppy has become an enduring symbol of support for our Armed Forces, and can also be used in school assemblies to observe the two-minute silence on 11 November. Emerging from the pandemic, the team at Greenwich Theatre has made an exciting choice for this year’s pantomime. “We could have gone with one of the easily recognised major titles” said artistic director James Haddrell. “Many theatres are relying on the likes of Cinderella or Aladdin to get them back on track and bring audiences back after missing last year’s Panto season. Those stories are great, and we’ll certainly be revisiting them in the future, but we wanted to come back with something new.” The theatre will therefore present a brand new take on The Queen of Hearts, the tale of the knave who stole the tarts. A major pantomime title in the past, there is every chance that this will be the only production of it in the country this year. Reuniting dame Andrew Pollard (who also writes and directs) with designer Cleo Pettitt and musical director Steve Markwick, this is set to feature all of the classic elements of a Greenwich pantomime - including the return of arch villain Anthony Spargo (last seen at Greenwich Theatre as the dastardly Miss Slighcarp in The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase) who appears as The King Of Clubs. In the show, which takes the nursery rhyme as its inspiration, the Knave of Hearts is a bit of a joker who’s in love with the Princess of Diamonds. The only problem is, she’s already got a boyfriend – the Prince of Spades. Maybe the Queen’s secret jam recipe will win her over? But then there’s the King of Clubs who’s also desperate to get his hands on the secret recipe… Tickets are selling fast, with a relaxed performance added this year too. The CBeebies star heads a sensational line-up that also includes EastEnders legend Todd Carty as Beauty’s father along with Matt Lapinskas (Dancing on Ice, EastEnders) as the Prince/Beast and returning to The Central Theatre pantomime is the hilarious Michael Neilson as Dame Dotty. Beauty and the Beast tells the classic fairy tale story in true panto style and promises to end 2021 with all the fun, magic and laughter that we need as we return back to normal life. New for Halloween 2021, Broadditch are opening their Pumpkin Patch, so you can enjoy the fun of picking your own pumpkins with your family. It’s open on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 October and half term week Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 October, 10am to 3pm every day. Brake, the road safety charity, has announced ‘Road Safety Heroes’ as the theme for Road Safety Week 2021. They are encouraging all road users, families, schools and organisations to sign up to take part in this year’s campaign.
