Going Back to School By Wendy Robinson, Service Head at Childline School is a huge part of children’s lives so it’s really important they’re happy there and feel comfortable – for their well-being and to maximise their potential. Children have had a lot to get to grips with over the last 18 months. Covid; virtual lessons; isolation; the list seems endless. It’s only natural if they feel a little apprehensive about going back to school. It’s common to worry about what the new school year will bring, bullying, or keeping up with homework and exam stress, for example. If you think something is bothering them but they’re struggling to talk about it, there are some signs you can look out for: • becoming withdrawn or depressed; • missing school or making excuses so they don’t have to go in; • changes in their eating habits. If you’re concerned about your child, talk about it – keep calm and listen carefully. If you’re not sure how to start the conversation you can find tips on the NSPCC website, www.nspcc.org.uk. Talk to your child about how they’re feeling and what they want to happen next. Speak to the school and your child’s teachers. This will help build a greater support network for them. Make sure they know who to ask for help. Help your child take time out – if they’re being bullied it may make them feel low so try and find ways to build their confidence but don’t leave them to cope alone. Talk to the school about how this situation is being addressed. If they’re worried about the next day, help them to prepare for it. Remind them to take things step by step and that you’re there for them at the end of the day, whether it’s a good day or a bad day. If they’re struggling to make friends, help them find children they have something in common with by joining a club for example. If they’re a bit shy, explore the Childline website together where you can find advice on how to start conversations. The number of friends they have isn’t important. What matters is having friends they’re close to and who are supportive. If they’ve fallen out with friends, it’s likely they will soon make up again. Let them know they can talk to you about what’s happened without fear of being judged. If their friend has upset them, encourage them to be assertive and talk to them about how they feel. There’s plenty of advice on the Childline website – children can read more about how to make new friends, how to keep up with their homework and what to do if they’re being bullied. If your child doesn’t feel they can talk to you, encourage them to call Childline on 0800 1111, or visit www.childline.org.uk for advice or to speak to a counsellor online. Photo credit: Tom Hull

More Than Just a Theatre School
Razzamataz Theatre Schools offer exceptionally high standards of performing arts training in dance, drama and singing. The classes cover a wide range of genres from classic West End and Broadway musical theatre through to the commercial genres of street dance, acting for camera and pop singing. Although many students go on to gain places at prestigious performing arts colleges and into West End shows such as Hamilton, &Juliet and Matilda, many families send their children to Razzamataz because of the huge difference it makes to their confidence and the many life skills that they learn. #MoreThanJustaTheatreSchool is the hashtag attached to Razzamataz Theatre Schools because of the feedback from students and families on the positive impact that Razzamataz has on each child. When children return after the summer break, teachers and staff will be working on helping them to reconnect with any of the lost life skills that occurred as a result of the pandemic. Razzamataz Maidstone & Medway is accepting new students to join their school, with the age groups ranging from 2-18 years. For new students, a first free trial session is available. Protect Your Crew Against Flu
Cathie Burton, Lead for the Kent and Medway Immunisation Team tells Primary Times, “Protect your crew against flu, make sure your child gets their vaccination at school. It’s so easy to do with a quick, painless squirt up the nose.” She answers some of your questions here. Q. Why does my child need it? A. All parents know the misery of caring for a sick child. While children are often thought to be more resilient to illnesses like flu, they can suffer the same symptoms as adults including headaches, sore throat, muscle aches and shivers. The flu vaccine cannot guarantee a child won’t get the flu but if they do, it’s likely to be milder and they should recover quicker. Q. Why does vaccinating my child protect others? A.Vaccinating your child has benefits for everyone because it is harder for the virus to spread. You’ll be protecting those at greater risk of complications from flu including older people, pregnant women and those with other health problems. With the possibility of a flu and COVID-19 surge this winter, we need to do everything we can to support those people at risk of respiratory illness to protect the NHS. Q. How do I book my child for their vaccine? A. We have a simple online consent form at www.kentcht.nhs.uk/ flu. It’s really important you fill this in when invited by your child’s school, to make sure they receive their vaccine. If you have any issues completing this form, phone 0300 123 5205 for more support. Please note: our photo was taken before Covid-19

Choosing your New School with
A Pull Out and Keep Feature
The complete guide to open days for that all important decision.
The Greatest of
Expectations
Gad’s Hill School delivers an exciting, independent education for children aged 3-16 years in the home of Charles Dickens.
Choosing your New School
Choosing your Child’s Secondary School
Choosing a secondary school may at first appear to be a daunting and complicated decision faced by parents. However it doesn’t need to be. It’s an important decision but, with so many schools to choose from and so many variables and specialisations, it can be a bit overwhelming. There are ways to make the process of finding the best school for your child easier. We have lots of ideas in this supplement as well as a table of local school websites to help you. Slick brochures and grand claims can be misleading and it is the people within a school that will have the most important impact on your child’s future. So, look beyond the website, visit, ask questions, get a sense of the school and what it stands for. Children enjoy facilities and activities but they are shaped by people and by values. The road ahead will have ups and downs and you will want to share them with people who believe in your child, who have high expectations for them and who genuinely care. Children succeed when they feel like they fit, when a school considers them as a person rather than a number or statistic and when they are allowed to reach for their individual potential. From the very first moment you set foot in the right school, you will get the feeling that they really want to get to know you and that they are just as excited about you joining their family as you are about joining them. Lots of schools will want to share their way, their philosophy, their vision, but the right ones will want to share yours. The best education is built around the child and not the other way round. Talking about previous Ofsted reports with a school, especially neutral or negative ones, can provide a good indicator of how the school takes on criticism, actively listens and puts plans in place to strive for better. Think about how the size of the school will suit your child. Smaller schools may be able to provide continuous one-toone support to a child, while bigger schools could have a better community spirit and group learning as well as more variety and options. Weigh up all the pros and cons and see what you think. Keep track of all the key diary dates, including specific school open evenings. Going to all open evenings can really help with your application. Ask what extra-curricular activities are offered at the school. Out of school activities are a good indicator of the enjoyment and experiences available to students of the school. Check out if the facilities are well maintained. Most classrooms will look spotless during an open evening, so look beyond the obvious teaching areas. The library, lunch hall and toilets are good indicators of how a school is maintained. Ask your child what they think of the school. Though it may not be wise to give your child final authority of the chosen school as they may give lots of weight to where their friends are going for instance, it is still a great idea to ask for your child’s opinion and find out which school they felt the most comfortable in and why. Finally, don’t panic! Have fun exploring the different schools and what they have to offer. There are many schools that are unique and can give your child an individual experience through their secondary school journey. Remember that you must return your application form to your local education authority by Sunday 31 October 2021. They may not accept late applications.

Study in Charles Dickens’ Former Home at Gad’s Hill
Set in the expansive and beautiful grounds of the former family home of Charles Dickens, Gad’s Hill is an independent day school in the village of Higham, just on the outskirts of Rochester, Kent. Educating girls and boys aged between 3 and 16 years old in its Kindergarten, Junior and Senior Schools, the School boasts modern facilities, while retaining its famous literary heritage and many of the traditions established since its foundation in 1924. The new part of the School, including a theatre, refectory and sports hall, was built in 2013 and sits aside the 18th century country manor. From its Nursery, set in the great author’s apple orchard, to GCSE lessons in specialist teaching facilities, class sizes are small, allowing teachers greater knowledge of pupils’ individual strengths and personalities. Gad’s Hill’s broad curriculum values practical and vocational subjects alongside the more traditionally academic, with pupils able to follow a pathway to GCSE in Art, Design Technology, Drama, Music, Food Preparation & Nutrition and PE in addition to Mathematics, English, the Sciences, History, Geography, Spanish and Computer Science. At the same time, an innovative Combined Cadet Force programme offers a suite of qualifications, including Institute of Leadership and Management, BTEC, Duke of Edinburgh and First Aid awards that deliver the vital life skills and personal attributes to equip leavers for adult life. The School’s ethos is that the development of selfconfidence, resilience, leadership and teamwork are every bit as important as the acquisition of academic knowledge in a holistic education. Additional co-curricular activities throughout Gad’s Hill include London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) courses, fencing, rock climbing, karate, air rifle, dance, singing and instrumental music lessons.Younger pupils make wonderful use of the on-site Forest School. Gad’s Hill provides a bus service throughout Gravesham, Longfield, Kings Hill, Medway and from South East London for both Junior and Senior students, and offers wraparound care from 7.30am-6pm for Kindergarten and Junior children. For more information, please visit www.gadshill.org.

Longfield Academy
Longfield Academy offers all students the opportunity to ‘Achieve Beyond Expectations.’ As part of the Leigh Academies Trust secondary academies, Longfield is structured to embrace the ‘small school’ model of learning. The college structure seeks to foster the strong links that exist within a small community. Excellent communication between the colleges and home is a central part of this process. Longfield has a state of the art modern building that includes the Telescope Bistro, run by Post 16 students and open to customers twice a week. It is a technology- rich environment. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards and the academy is equipped with three designated computer suites, one for each college. In addition, the college plaza areas have workstations allowing students to access their learning outside of normal lesson time. The academy embraces the use of Chromebooks as additional learning tools which allow students to access their learning from home, via online platforms such as Google Classroom. Teachers use innovative approaches to engage students in their learning, promoting high standards of literacy, numeracy and communication skills in all subject areas. Through the IB Middle Years Programme, delivered in Years 7, 8 and 9, they firmly believe that developing students’ awareness and appreciation of the wider environment prepares them to be global citizens. The MYP also prepares students to excel at GCSE and then thrive even further in the Sixth Form, rated Outstanding by Ofsted.
A Culture of Achievement
Northfleet School for Girls is a vibrant and caring school in which all students can ‘Dream Big and Achieve’. Every student is talented and capable of excelling. The school’s role is to foster those abilities so that students leave with excellent qualifications and the learning skills to succeed in their chosen career. The school’s vision centres on high expectations for all students. This is demonstrated through challenging yet supportive learning, proactive behaviour, professional appearance and positive relationships. In 2017, they became an International Baccalaureate World School. This recognises their intention to deliver aspirational qualifications as well as developing well- rounded, internationally minded and confident learners of the future. NSfG places a strong emphasis on creating opportunities for students to lead and take part in trips and clubs, ensuring all members value being a part of an aspirational and respectful community. At NSfG, students will experience a community which is dedicated to working together for the benefit of all its members. Key to the school’s success is the knowledge that when staff, students and parents work effectively as one team, the best possible results will be achieved for all. Finally, they believe that students should enjoy their journey through school.

Just One Tree Day
There is still time for schools to join hundreds of others and sign-up to the highly popular Just One Tree Day, taking place on Friday 15 October. Schools throughout the UK and around the globe have already committed to participating in this international non-uniform day that encourages children to bring in £1 to plant a tree and help reforest the planet - a tree is planted for every £1 raised. Over 150,000 children from eight countries have joined together since Just One Tree Day first launched in 2019. The day highlights to children and young people how their individual actions can make a difference in the fight against climate change and the biodiversity crises. The event is open to both primary and secondary schools - those taking part can access lesson resources that fit in with the national curriculum. As part of their fundraising activities, children learn about photosynthesis, the benefits of trees for both people and wildlife and the vital role they play in reducing the impacts of climate change. The money raised is used to plant the ‘right trees in the right place’, supporting reforestation projects in Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal and Zambia, including mangrove forests and kelp regeneration. To find out more, visit www.justonetree.life.
You Are Not Alone
A group of school leaders has launched a book that shares their experiences of being Black, Asian and minority ethnic teachers and leaders, and the difficulties and barriers they have faced in education. ‘You Are Not Alone: Leaders for Race Equality’ is based on the personal experiences of fourteen leaders in education from Asian, African, Caribbean and multiple backgrounds. It includes personal and challenging stories of the discrimination faced as both leaders and individuals. Through school, university, interviews and promotion, the stories show how individuals have often had to prove themselves at every step on the way to leadership and have faced both overt and covert racism from others. It also, ultimately, expresses their messages of hope. The aim is not just to inform those who may not realise how racism is experienced today, but also to inspire those who might not consider school leadership if they do not see themselves represented. One head teacher told Primary Times, “One clear example of unconscious bias is the number of times I have turned up to greet a visitor in reception in a suit and tie, and they presume I’m a Teaching Assistant. This has happened to me on numerous occasions, in numerous leadership positions, in numerous schools, in numerous local authorities. I do not know of any white leaders in education who have ever been mistaken for a Teaching Assistant, but do you know how many non-white leaders of education I know who have had the same experience? You’ve guessed it… numerous.” Originating from school leaders’ union NAHT’s first equality network for Black, Asian and minority ethnic members, the book is a personal and authentic presentation of the discussions and experiences shared in the group.

What’s New for the High Weald Academy?
Students and the community of Cranbrook have seen the exciting opening of their new state-of-the-art secondary school during the last two years. The purpose built, 21st century school building is one of the best and most modern learning environments in the area, providing students with an inspirational setting to achieve and excel. All the 69 classrooms and offices maximise natural light and have climate control to ensure a comfortable place in which to concentrate and focus. The new science laboratories, art rooms, ICT suites and drama studio provide specialist spaces for students to experience new things. The school’s focus to motivate students has supported the development of a whole new curriculum which was launched during 2019. This includes a particular focus on a new maths curriculum, which has been developed to allow and support every student within The High Weald Academy to succeed and achieve their best. Through adopting and applying the Maths Mastery approach, the aim is to extend students’ ability to explore maths. Students will be encouraged to utilise the five pillars of the Mastery approach to hone their knowledge and understanding of how to apply their learning and develop their confidence in such a vital subject discipline. The curriculum experience for students has been carefully re-modelled again in order to ensure adequate opportunity to catch up with progress that time away from school may have affected, during the pandemic. With a strong emphasis on developing reading and vocabulary, students also have additional time to accelerate their numeracy and literacy skills. High Weald Academy’s ability to deliver virtual ‘live’ lessons means that the school can protect students from the impact of any future disruption to their schooling. It is a nurturing environment with small class sizes where all students are known and their wellbeing is a priority. The strong pastoral team, alongside the professional onsite counselling service, Place2Be, provide bespoke support for students, families and staff alike. Rated “Good” by Ofsted, in 2019 under the new framework, Ofsted stated that “pupils are cared for well and respected. Staff expect the best from all pupils and are ambitious for them.” The vision is of a school where all the difficulties and disadvantages of the outside world are left at the school gate. Students enjoy coming to school and the school is one which they feel proud to be a part of. Ebbsfleet Academy has the highest of standards and expectations, an orderly and respectful environment, where relationships between staff and students are exceptionally positive. In association with the Chelsea Foundation, the school offers a unique opportunity for Sixth Form students who are serious football players, to combine their academic studies with training provided by UEFA certified coaches. The school also has its own Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and works in partnership with Tonbridge School to develop qualities such as self-discipline, loyalty and respect. Mary’s Meals’ Superheroes
The global school feeding charity has created educational superhero activity packs to teach pupils about life for children in some of the world’s poorest countries. Primary pupils can learn how food is changing the story of the lives of children in these countries. Free downloadable activity packs help pupils learn more about Mary’s Meals’ work feeding children in 19 countries where poverty levels are high, including Malawi, Haiti and Madagascar. Centred on Upile, a girl from Malawi, and her friends, the educational resource shows how the daily cup of vitamin-enriched porridge children receive from Mary’s Meals gives them energy and superhero powers! Resources on offer include a video, fun activities, such as colouring-in sheets and the chance for children to design their own superhero masks. The materials also support learning across the curriculum including language, literacy and health and wellbeing. The educational packs are aimed at primary school children and contain different resources for 5-7 year olds and also 8-11 year olds. Mary’s Meals has also produced an updated resource called Amazing Grace which is aimed at pupils in upper primary school. This explores how poverty can prevent children around the world getting an education, but how a daily meal at school is transforming the lives of children like Grace, enabling them to gain an education and learn and grow. Both Superheroes and Saving Grace are available on the children’s resources page of the Mary’s Meals website, www. marysmeals.org.uk
Mr Shaha’s Marvellous Machines
This is a lovely book, written by South London science teacher, Alom Shaha, passing on the recycling message but also trying to inspire children and parents to be as excited as he is about making things. It’s illustrated beautifully by Emily Robertson. In Mr Shaha’s Marvellous Machines, he gives you simple instructions for building toys which fly, spin, whizz, and pop. To encourage recycling and re-use, everything in the book is made from household items you’ve probably got lying around. This book gives clear, stepby-step instructions for over 15 projects. Whether you’re a master engineer or a total beginner, it will spark inspiration for fun activities to engage young people in the marvels of machinery. And it’s not just a book. You’ll find it includes links to download activity sheets, watch instructional videos, and join Mr Shaha’s community of wondersmiths. At the heart of the book is the idea that we don’t have to be buying new stuff all the time, instead we can make our own stuff and learn about engineering and science at the same time. Discover the joy of making, and develop your creativity, scientific thinking, problem solving, and practical skills. Mr Shaha’s Marvellous Machines is published by Scribble at a recommended price of £12.99 and is available from high street and online bookshops.

CHOOSING A SECONDARY SCHOOL THAT’S AS UNIQUE AS YOUR CHILD As a parent, we all want the very best for our children and we all have high expectations of what our ideal secondary school will provide for them throughout their school career. Here at St Augustine Academy, our expectations and standards are high. OFSTED has rated us Good, with outstanding features since 2014, and our self-improvement journey is both reflective and demanding.
As a secondary school with an inclusive Christian distinctiveness, we are a member of the Anglican Diocese of Canterbury. We have a chapel on site and dedicate moments to pause in every day to reflect on our world and the part we all play within it. Our culture is based around key values that people of all faiths – and none – can support such as tolerance, kindness, understanding, respect and care for others, all underpinned by our calm learning environment where every person excels. Our academic attainment is achieved through a broad curriculum which includes links with the University of Kent, a Healthy Minds PSHE syllabus, and an Enrichment programme which encourages all our students to expand their knowledge and interests beyond the standard curriculum; exploring topics that go significantly beyond standard ‘educational frameworks’ that you will encounter anywhere else gives an unparalleled opportunity for all students to excel and flourish.

As a small school with excellent facilities, the Academy provides a supportive atmosphere allowing all our students to develop their confidence and broaden their horizons. Your child will be supported by a strong pastoral team, ensuring everyone can achieve their best throughout their learning journey with us.
It is important that all our students enjoy their learning and can be creative to enable them to make a positive contribution to society, whatever path they choose to take in life. We know that secondary can be daunting, and we deliberately start our journey together with a thoughtful and supporting ‘primary transition’ programme which helps everyone to feel welcome, cared for, and an essential part of our St Augustine family.
“St Augustine Academy is providing me with so many opp o rt un i t ie s t hr ou g h out m y t i m e here. Bullying Videos from The Diana Award
As over 10 million children head back to school in September, new research, commissioned by youth charity, The Diana Award, has asked young people and their parents about their experiences of bullying and the impact the events of the last year has had on their lives and social development. The survey covers a broad range of topics including how many young people and parents have experienced bullying and the impact this has had on their lives and their concerns about returning to school, cultural movements and news stories in the last year, and how this might have influenced young people. For example, the rise in conversation and news coverage around inclusivity, diversity, racism and sexism; How Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns may have impacted social development in children and young people. A host of celebrities including children’s TV presenters, sports people, actors, models and many others have filmed videos discussing their personal experiences of being bullied at school aimed at supporting today’s pupils. All videos can be viewed at http://back2school.antibullyingpro.com.

Big Story Writing Challenge Winner
The Leeds Castle Big Story Writing Challenge was launched in 2019, to celebrate the Castle’s milestone 900th anniversary year and celebrate literacy in younger visitors with Primary Times as Media Partner. This year’s winner with a lovely story is Leyla-Maria Tezer who is aged 9. Our picture shows Leyla-Maria receiving her prize from Clare Balding.
One Golden Day Sweat dripping down his face, the Wizard was zooming everywhere making a potion to save the King’s life. As he was looking in his dusty, old spell book for how to make it, he saw an error in his potion. Whatever the King touched would turn to pure gold. “He won’t mind, I’ll just tell him when I get there” thought the wizard, “He won’t mind.” After the Wizard had poured the liquid potion into a diamond container, he set off. He walked quickly away from his dark, gloomy cave as the trees reached at him like witches’ fingers and the wind howled like a wolf. It was a treacherous journey, but after some time, he found a clearing in the woods and saw the castle ahead of him. It was made of tough stone and endless battlements with a large, murky moat surrounding it. The Wizard took one look at it and said to himself, “I have to get there in time, I can do this.” As soon as he got to the Castle, he used his magic to lift the heavy, iron portcullis and found his way along the winding corridors to the King’s bedroom. He opened the door, bowed, and said, “Your Majesty, I have bought what you need, the potion of immortality as you requested.” “Thank you, my dear boy,” trembled the King, “Now-w-w, give it here-e b-b-before I die.” So, the Wizard gave the potion to him, but before he did, he said, “Are you sure you want it? There is a little glitch. Everything you touch, even if you don’t want it to, will turn to gold.” “I don’t care, just give it here!” demanded the dying King. “OK your Majesty, your wish is my command…” and the Wizard gave the King the potion which he drank in one go. Gulp! After he drank the last drop, the King said gleefully, “Oh my goodness gracious me, bless my soul, I feel like a new man! It’s a miracle – it is as if I was never ill!” “I know,” replied the Wizard! That’s the point of the potion, you will now live forever!” Clearing his throat, the King announced, “I do believe I haven’t introduced myself, I’m King Henry VIII.You are?” “Alfred the Wizard. It is a pleasure to meet you King Henry. Right, I must be going, I need to make some more potions and whip up something for my supper. So, bye-bye!” Alfred said in a hurry. “Wait! I must repay you!” King Henry pleaded. “You must accompany me on our visit to France for the jamboree. It will be a lavish affair and with my new power and you by my side, I’m sure we will display riches beyond King Francis’ wildest dreams!
Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Kent
“This will be a truly magnificent sight! One people will never forget!” As the King patted his chest, his clothes magically turned into the finest golden thread! His greedy eyes gleamed and he laughed a full belly laugh that echoed down the stone corridors. Alfred reluctantly gave a smile through gritted teeth and agreed to attend, though he was afraid that this may not end happily. The royal party set off to France with 5000 courtiers and with Alfred the Wizard choosing to fly by dragon (his favourite mode of transport.) When they arrived King Henry was very selective with what his magic fingers did. He used his golden touch to turn tents and pavilions into lavish gold, even the fountains turned into solid gold and overflowed with claret wine. Within the dazzling tents, they enjoyed feasts, dancing and games. Everyone was astounded by the riches that the King displayed around him. Certainly outdoing King Francis I of France! The only trouble was when King Henry VIII was challenged to some wrestling against King Francis I. “How can I touch him? Everyone will know about my powers when he turns to gold – I will be found out!” Alfred and King Henry agreed that King Henry should let King Francis win this match, just this once. “My golden display of wealth is worth its weight in gold!” boasted King Henry and they both chuckled. The event went on from the 7th June until the 24th June 1520. It was recorded in a beautiful tapestry and was forever to be known in history as The Field of the Cloth of Gold. Even Alfred’s dragon made an appearance onto the cloth! And what happened to Alfred and the King’s golden touch you ask? Well, once back at the castle in England, King Henry VIII thanked Alfred but in hugging the Wizard, a sad and unfortunate event occurred. Alfred himself turned to gold and all his powers were lost including the magical spell that had given King Henry VIII his golden touch and immortality. “The day I met this fine Wizard really was a golden day and now history will honour our secret in the Field of the Cloth of Gold.” Photo credit: Matthew Walker Photography

Meet Emma Carroll
author of The Week at World’s End Primary Times were lucky enough to speak to Emma Carroll, once a secondary school teacher, now a multiple award-winning writer. Our interviewer, Rachel Benson, found her charismatic, energetic, and incredibly welcoming. Her latest release, The Week at World’s End, is based in 1962. Runaway, Anna, befriends Stevie and Ray as she hides from people who are trying to poison her. As tensions rise between America and Russia, and with the threat of war, Stevie wonders if Anna has been sent with a special message just for her. We were lucky enough to speak to Emma one Monday morning, typically, by Zoom. A little ice breaker - you used to pick avocados do you hate them or eat them by the dozen like us? I eat a lot of avocados, I love them! It was in Israel that I was picking them. Because it was quite hot we used to go picking them around dawn, and the chap who took us down there always carried a gun, because there were wolves, wild dogs and jackals that you could sometimes come across in the orchard. Luckily, we didn’t! What originally inspired you to become a writer? Well, I’ve always loved English. Even as a primary school student, English was always my favourite subject, it was the thing that made sense. Sort of in the opposite way to Maths really! But when I got to secondary school I had the most amazing English teacher, called Mrs Bailey, and she just got me. I loved her for that. She gave me that confidence. I’ve never forgotten that teacher who really made a difference to me. With lots of creative professionals there’s that one teacher who really inspires them, isn’t there? It’s that one person who sees in you the thing that you haven’t quite yet seen in yourself but you know it’s there somewhere. When someone else can see it too it justifies it to you. A lot of your books are based on historical events, with The Week at World’s End set around the Cuban Missile Crisis. Why have you chosen to do that? First of all because I really like reading books like that. The very first book I wrote, Frost Hollow Hall, isn’t based around a historical event, that’s just a Victorian ghost story. It was only when I got to write my second book, The Girl Who Walked On Air,
that I really began to think about historical events that might trigger the story. That’s actually quite a helpful way of writing historical fiction because you’ve got an event to hang your story on. The Week at World’s End was inspired by my parents. They were teenagers during the Cuban Missile Crisis. When I talked to my Mum and Dad about living through this week when the world was on the brink, it sounded absolutely terrifying. That would be a really interesting thing to write about. When you look at 1962, Kennedy was President of the US, Martin Luther King was giving a lot of speeches, the space race was going on and the Beatles had their first song out. So there were so many things happening, I thought ‘let’s do it!’ What’s your favourite thing about this book? I think the fact that they live in this little close and it really reminds me of my childhood. It’s a real book of the heart. On your website you talk about needing lots of cups of tea when writing (which we love!) What else do you need/do when writing? I really like this space (Emma gestures to the room she’s talking to me from). It’s only a tiny little room at the back of my house but it is my favourite place to write. It’s having the quiet space where I know that I am clicking into that creative mode. What else? I like to have a dog in here with me. I do like that. Emma turns her screen round to show me her view - the rolling Somerset hills out of the window and in front, a dog bed complete with resting dog. That’s Bert. It’s normally my other dog but he got here first today. Tea. I like nice notebooks. That’s sort of it really - tea, dogs, quiet space. Do you have any tips for any budding writers? The most important thing that any writer can tell you is to read. It’s where we get a lot of our ideas from. You also learn about your own tastes. It’s really important to choose a type of story to write that you yourself would want to read. Also, experiment. Don’t necessarily go down one route. Try writing poetry. I’ve heard of a lot of writers saying that a story they have written has started as a poem. Emma Carroll’s latest release promises to be an adventurous, nostalgic and historical treat for readers of all ages. The Week at World’s End, published by Faber, is released at the beginning of September and is available from all good book shops.
