School’s Out for Summer..... and Primary Times is going to be your best friend this school holiday! Welcome to the biggest help you are going to use this summer. There’s no need to get stressed, no need for the constant “what are we doing today”, simply keep your copy of Primary Times handy and look through our comprehensive listings to see what’s on. Primary Times has the best set of listings for primary aged children anywhere. Nobody does it better! We have worked night and day to source them and have spent hours checking, double checking and proof reading them. Having said that we do produce some of them a long time in advance so do remember to check with the venue for any updates before planning a trip. We don’t usually mention cost and full details as we just don’t have room so do check first if you need more information. As well as being loved for our listings, our competitions are pretty popular too! In this magazine look out for a chance to win an Xbox One and copy of LEGO The Incredibles game. We have a fantastic word search competition with a top prize of the Xbox One, game and goody bag plus two runners up prizes of LEGO The Incredibles goody bags. Don’t forget to enter all our other competitions too and remember to include your details if you do enter. We can’t notify you if you don’t let us know who you are.... Farewell and good luck to all our Year 6 readers off to secondary school. There isn’t a secondary school version of Primary Times but if you still want to see us take a look in your local library.

Film Preview Guide Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation

The nation’s favourite monster family are back and this adventure promises to be bigger and better than ever. Drac and the family are taking a summer vacation from providing everyone else’s vacation at the hotel, and embark on a holiday on a luxury monster cruise ship. It’s smooth sailing for Drac’s Pack as the monsters indulge in all of the shipboard fun the cruise has to offer, from monster volleyball to exotic excursions, and catching up on their moon tans. However, the dream vacation turns into a nightmare when Mavis realises Drac has fallen for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka. Little do they know that his “too good to be true” love interest is actually a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing, ancient nemesis to Dracula and all other monsters, and she hides a dangerous secret that could destroy all of monsterkind. Catch the latest instalment in the Hotel Transylvania adventure from 27 July.

Incredibles 2

The Parr family are back, with their incredible story picking up where the previous film finished in 2004. Helen, aka Elastigirl, continues to fight crime using her stretching powers, whilst also leading a campaign to bring Supers back. Meanwhile, Bob navigates the dayto-day heroics of ‘normal’ life at home with Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack, whose superpowers are about to be discovered.Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone by their side. They must find a way to work together again – which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible. Incredibles 2 bursts into cinemas on 13 July.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

TheTeenTitans are back with the voice of Greg Davies inTeenTitans Go! to the Movies. It seems to theTeens that all the major superheroes are starring in their own movies - everyone but theTeenTitans, that is. Leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, theTeenTitans head toTinselTown, determined to pull off their dream. The group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, and things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of theTeenTitans themselves on the line.Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is a clever, tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, and comes to cinemas on 3 August. 4

Arrive Safely with Arriva Buses Arriva run local buses across Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Essex, connecting people and communities. Local is at the heart of everything Arriva do from local services and working with local schools through to employing local residents to drive and maintain their buses. Happy Birthday Sooty

Sooty is to celebrate his official 70th birthday on Thursday 19 July. The legendary yellow glove puppet was bought on Blackpool North Pier in 1948 by Harry Corbett, who was looking to entertain his children whilst on their summer holiday. Having been on the hands of Harry’s son Matthew Corbett during the 70s/80s/90s, Sooty has now been fronted for twenty years on ITV by Richard Cadell. Joined by his trusty sidekicks Sweep and Soo, Sooty’s appeal has continued to endure across generations of families. For his 70th birthday, Sooty has decided to film a brand new series of The Sooty Show. These six brilliant new episodes will be available to watch later this year on Sooty’s brand new YouTube channel, and will feature cameos from some of Sooty’s celebrity friends, including Peter Andre, John Challis and Lisa Riley. The brand-new YouTube channel will also showcase some of The Sooty Show’s best episodes from Sooty’s 70 years as well as exclusive educational content and activities.

Young gardeners are being asked to help the UK’s beleaguered butterflies, bees and moths by making their area the most pollinatorfriendly in the UK. Butterfly Conservation is trying to discover which UK area is home to the most butterfly-friendly gardens after it was revealed that butterflies are declining faster in urban areas than in the countryside. The wildlife charity is urging nature lovers and gardeners to take part in their ‘Plant Pot for Pollinators’ campaign and provide nectar sources for pollinating insects in their outdoor spaces. The project is encouraging householders to plant a pot with nectar sources such as Shasta Daisy, Cosmos and Catmint. Those taking part can plot the location of their pot on the Plant Pots for Pollinators website and help reveal the most pollinator friendly county in the UK. Bees, moths, butterflies, hoverflies and beetles have a significant role to play in pollinating wild flowers. Urban gardens act as important refuges for pollinators, but these insects are increasingly under threat from habitat loss, agricultural intensification and climate change. Previously widespread garden species such as the Small Tortoiseshell and Garden Tiger moth have seen their numbers plummet. By planting flowers such as French Marigold, Calendula and Dahlia gardeners provide food for butterflies such as Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral and Peacock, while providing a few Thyme and Lavender plants will attract species of bees and other pollinating insects. Pollinating insects are essential for the fertilisation of many crops, including fruit, seeds and oils as well as many plants, trees and wild flowers.

A simple pot of Lavender or Buddleia on the doorstep can do the trick, and a well-planted window box can be a butterfly magnet. And don’t forget moths - stepping outside at night and watching moths buzz around your flowers is a magical experience. The Royal Engineers Museum at Gillingham is marking the centenary of the Armistice which brought the First World War to an end with a major exhibition entitled VC: For Valour. The exhibition, which runs from 3 July to 21 December, focuses on the Sapper Victoria Crosses of the First World War. The Museum holds ten original Victoria Crosses won by soldiers of the Royal Engineers during the War and these will feature in the exhibition. Displays and artefacts will tell the stories of the ordinary men that were awarded the Victoria Cross and the extraordinary actions that were recognised with the honour. The Museum will also stage its popular holiday activities throughout the summer with hands-on family craft sessions every Tuesday – Friday from 24 July to 31 August. To tie in with VC: For Valour, this summer’s activities will all be inspired by aspects of the First World War and each week will take a different theme. Activities during the six-week holidays include the chance to devise a code wheel, creating a grenade from clay, designing camouflage or discovering the role animals played in the war. The exhibition and activities are in addition to the usual displays at Kent’s largest military museum. Highlights include Wellington’s map of Waterloo, Zulu War weapons, amazing bridge-laying tanks, a Harrier Jump Jet, a large section of the Berlin Wall and an enormous V2 Rocket. With interactive exhibits, indoor and outdoor play areas, a café and a gift shop, there’s plenty for all the family. For more details, please visit www.re-museum.co.uk.

The Essential Guide to Pond Dipping

Ponds have a huge variety of amazing little creatures just waiting to be discovered. Get your nets and magnifying glasses at the ready and go pond dipping this summer, either in your garden, at your local park or in a local Woodland Trust nature reserve. First on the essential list is getting your equipment – a net, a lightcoloured shallow tray or plastic container to inspect your findings in, plastic spoons, a magnifying glass, ID sheets and notebook to record your findings and a phone or camera. Follow this handy guide to ensure your pond dipping success. First, scoop some pond water into your container so the little creatures will be happy swimming around in it. Lie on your tummy or kneel by the side of the pond and sweep your net slowly through the water – a figure of eight shape works best. Then take your net out and carefully turn it inside out so the creatures you’ve caught drop into the container. You can then use your spoon to scoop them up and get a closer look. But don’t touch them as you might hurt them. Check out the Woodland Trust’s pond dipping guide online for pictures to help you identify your finds. Show off your findings to The Woodland Trust on social media using #NatureDetectives. And if you want more ideas like this through the post, why not become a Woodland Trust Nature Detective? Find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/naturedetectives.

Do You Know Your Oak From Your Ash?

Did you know that the average living room has ten items made from trees, or that 300 insects live in just one silver birch tree? How often do you read a newspaper, sit on a sofa or write on a piece of paper? With over 70 million visits to the nations’ forests a year, the Forestry Commission England’s Tree Explorer campaign explores the world of trees and reveals what an incredible contribution they make to our lives. Tree Explorer helps people to identify and learn more about the different tree species, uncovering some amazing facts that most of us probably didn’t know before. Available at 21 forests across the country, the Tree Explorer Trail challenges visitors to identify trees using their leaves, bark and seeds and delves into fascinating and entertaining old tree traditions along the way. Visitors can use the new online tree identification tool to help them identify a variety of species and entertain their kids with the Tree Explorer activity pack. Children can try their hand at being a tree scientist, step into the world of a wildlife ranger or learn about the day job of our foresters. A range of self-guided walks are also available in forest locations around the country, encouraging people to learn more about the trees on their doorstep. For more information visit www. forestry.gov.uk/treeexplorer. Photo credit: Forestry Commission England

Seize the Summer with Explore Learning.

Research shows that two thirds of children fall behind in their studies over the summer. Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning, shared her ideas with Primary Times on how you can help your child seize the summer: Start a blog Give your child a note book to jot ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Referencing pictures is a great tool to help encourage children to describe what is happening and get their creativity flowing. Send a postcard Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to. Postcards are only short so are a wonderful way to get your child writing during the holidays. Read, read and read some more Pop a book in your bag so you can use this when travelling on days out. Explore Learn will be uploading weekly activities that you can complete with your child to help keep them engaged with what they are reading.Visit www.explorelearning. co.uk/summer to find out more and download your first activity. Tuition To keep your children progressing over the summer, a tuition centre is a great option. Avoid the battle ground of getting children to do work at home and take them along to a centre where there are lots of other children getting involved. Explore Learning offers free taster sessions, so get in touch today by calling 03301 243 802. Explore Learning is offering a saving of £50 to the first 65 members who join between 11 July and 11 August.Visit www.explorelearning. co.uk/offer. Terms and conditions apply.

Support for Children with Dyslexia

Every year Flexi-School Dyslexia receives hundreds of calls from parents who are desperate to get help for their dyslexic children. Some parents feel that their children have lost their confidence, refuse to go to school, have slipped through the net and have been left behind their classmates. Some parents are fortunate enough to be able to take control of their child’s learning and make alternative arrangements for specialist interventions, such as those offered by Flexi-School Dyslexia. Others simply cannot afford to give their children this opportunity and sadly do not have the means to fund a place. Last year one of Flexi-School’s former pupils, Adam Blumsum, decided that FSD had been so important to him that he wanted to raise money to give someone like him a helping hand. He raised an amazing £1250, and with these funds the ‘Blumsum Bursary’ was born. Other pupils also felt that FSD was so important to them that they too wanted to give other children the chance to enjoy the provision. Fifteen young

Kent Stagecoach Anniversary

Children across the country will honour the UK’s leading network of performing arts schools this year, as thousands take part in the thirtieth anniversary celebrations of Stagecoach Performing Arts. Students from Stagecoach Performing Arts in Dartford, Maidstone and Tonbridge will join the celebrations. Each school has an exciting line-up of events taking place this year to support a roster of activity happening on a nationwide scale. To commemorate the milestone, all schools will present special performances of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to family and friends in July. Then in August the Dartford school will be holding two summer workshops. ‘This Is Me’ will be based on the story and music of The Greatest Showman for 7-18 year olds and ‘I am Moana’ will be for younger performers aged 4-6. Stagecoach Performing Arts schools in Dartford, Maidstone and Tonbridge form part of the nationwide network of Stagecoach schools that provide extra-curricular lessons in singing, dancing and acting on a weekly basis. All your own work! Poppie Krefta aged 6

A Poem About Sports Day by Poppie Krefta aged 6 Sometimes I call “Sports Day” – “Shorts Day”! My little brother calls it “Airports Day”. Will there be sunshine or will there be thunder? I do not know, but I certainly wonder. I wonder about the big shorts wearing sports bear, I imagine him running all around my short hair. My little brother never believes me. He’s more excited about doing a wee wee! When I finish in the race first, I feel like I am going to burst! When people run the race and lose, I think it’s because they needed the loos! Hooray! I’m so happy – because I’m first. You know what that means? I’m going to burst! First, I must find a way to stop this thirst, Then I will burst because I AM FIRST!
