Unicorn Land is the most magical experience your child will ever have, with memories to last a lifetime. The UK’s first ever unicorn tour is a wonderful opportunity for children to meet, groom and ride unicorns or have a memorable trip in a unicorn princess carriage. Unicorn Land is an enchanting world, with all things unicorn, including a unicorn inflatable rodeo, theatre shows, unicorn DJ, face painting, bouncy castle, unicorn dress up and the chance to take part in the Great British Slime Off competition with celebrity judges. The idea for Unicorn Land came from 9-yearold Alyssya Carrington, whose father Stafford, an award-winning entrepreneur and event organiser, took her to visit a unicorn for her birthday. When Stafford saw the huge smile on his daughter’s face, he knew he wanted other parents and children to experience the same magical feeling he did when Alyssya first saw a unicorn. Unicorn Dream has partnered with Make a Wish, to make seriously ill children’s wishes come true. For every 10 Unicorn Land tickets sold, they will grant a magical wish for a very special child, giving away hundreds of tickets. During the tour, unicorns will be visiting sick children, spreading happiness and magic across the country. For 15% off your magical experience at Unicorn Land, book today using your exclusive discount code PRIME15 at www. unicorndream.co.uk. Prices are from £37 and adults go free. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out.

NHS Return to Practice Programme

Ola Idowu would say to anyone else thinking about returning to nursing, “Go for it. Trust your instincts. If this is your passion, you’ll find a way.” The 33-year-old went into the profession, having watched her mother Felicia caring faithfully for her patients in Nigeria. Not only did she pass on that enduring commitment of care to her daughter, she instilled a work ethic that Ola now wants her son Tami to witness. Ola graduated with a BSc nursing degree before sevenyear-old Tami was born. She is now a treasured member of the team at the Trevor Gibbons Unit in Maidstone, where her skills, experience and heart for mental health have been making a difference for the past year. Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust would love to hear from previously registered RMNs and RNLDs. It runs the Return to Practice programme in conjunction with Canterbury Christ Church University. The next course starts in January 2020 with the deadline to apply in October. Like Ola, you could look to come back into the workplace now on flexible hours as a healthcare assistant in advance of the course starting and you regaining your PIN. To hear more of Ola’s story and for more information on Return to Practice, please visit www.kmpt.nhs.uk and, for a chat about the possibilities, call Emma Hutchinson in the recruitment team on 01227 812 351.

Hedgehog Education Packs

Wildlife charity People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) has launched a series of fun and interactive hedgehog education packs for primary schools and teachers, aimed at Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils. From ‘homes for hogs’ to ‘bug banquets’, these resources will help pupils learn all about the world of hedgehogs and how small changes made at school or at home can make a big difference. The activities on offer include learning about hedgehogs, preparing bug banquets, designing hedgehog houses, identifying hedgehog hazards to look out for and discovering what makes a healthy hedgehog dinner. These free resources cover a variety of national curriculum subjects and include programmes of study, which can be carried out come rain or shine inside a classroom or outside in the playground! Designed to be used by teachers and other educational leaders including those running kids’ clubs, Scouts and Girl Guides, the

International aid charity WaterAid has launched its first-ever voice skill powered for Amazon Alexa. WaterAid Voices, an interactive storytelling experience for schools and families helps to educate children about the state of the world’s water, toilets and hygiene around the world. The skill will take children to a different land entirely to learn about life in the Madagascan village of Tsarafangitra. Through a series of six interactive voice messages, they will learn some handy phrases in the local language, recipes in Malagasy cuisine and how to spot a zebu through quizzes and mini-games. Designed with Key Stage 2 students in mind, this provides the perfect post-school activity for parents who want an interactive, educational and enjoyable past-time for all the family, while raising awareness of an important topic. A shocking one in three of the world’s schools lack adequate toilets, compromising children’s human rights to sanitation and leaving them to either use dirty, unsafe pits, go in the open, or stay at home, resulting in missed school days and loss of potential. WaterAid Voices is one way that the charity hopes to get more people talking about an issue that impacts the lives of many every day, including young people in some of the world’s poorest places. The Help a South African School Competition

A nationwide initiative, which is part of the South African Fruit campaign, invites schools to submit an assembly script based around doing good with South African fruit. The winning school will be awarded £2,000 to spend on school resources and the two runners up will receive £500 each. The winner will be asked to perform the assembly in front of the judging panel and local press. Judging the scripts will be the South African embassy in the UK and British television presenter, author, broadcaster and live-show performer, Stefan Gates. Stefan told Primary Times, “I have supported this initiative for several years by putting on one of my science stage shows (Gastronaut Live) for the winning school. The competition is a fantastic opportunity for primary schools to learn about South Africa, and understand how buying South African fruit can have such a great impact on the lives of the country’s growers and workers.” Alongside the competition will be the opportunity for primary schools to donate unwanted English text and reading books to deprived schools in South Africa. All you have to do is visit the website, fill out the form and your books will be collected. The South Africa fruit industry is committed to supporting its workers and their families. For more information and to enter the competition, please visit www.helpasouthafricanschool.co.uk.

for us. With around 650 seaweed species in the UK, we are living in a global diversity hotspot. It’s estimated that 70- 80% of the world’s oxygen comes from marine algae which also helps us by locking up C02 to slow climate change.Yet most of us are unaware of the importance of seaweed or how to recognise and record it. The Marine Conservation Society (MCS), has created a programme to bring this vital, yet often overlooked and misunderstood part of our coast to life for seven to eleven-year-olds. They have created a new suite of downloadable resources to help primary school teachers and other youth group leaders introduce children aged 7 to 11, to the beauty, diversity and value of seven easily found seaweed species that thrive on our coasts. Fun activities to do on the shore supplement the Big Seaweed Search activity itself. Associated indoor sessions use curriculum linked lessons, games, practical activities, video and even dance to bring seaweeds alive and encourage children to delve deeper and discover the amazing attributes of algae. All resources are freely available, and sessions can be amended to suit any particular group and teaching situation. Let’s Play National Theatre Programme Primary school teachers across the UK can join the Let’s Play programme, giving them access to cross-curricular resources to transform theatre-making in schools. It was developed by the National Theatre with teachers and school leaders from a broad range of primary schools, aiming to transform creativity and theatremaking, with pupils and teachers learning new skills. The programme allows schools to create an impressive and entertaining school play that everyone will be proud of. Pupils gain confidence and team working skills and teachers learn how to stage highquality school productions, as well as developing their understanding of creative learning and how to apply those skills in their classrooms. Once registered, schools will gain access to eight new scripts for children to perform, musical scores and backing tracks for original songs and will have the opportunity to complete CPD courses for teachers led by professional theatre makers. Teachers will also get a toolkit, film resources and cross-curricular activities and children will have the opportunity to gain an Arts Award. Let’s Play costs £350 per academic year. Discounted places are also available. For more information, visit www.nationaltheatre.org.uk or alternatively contact Lorna on 020 7452 3370 or at lmcginty@ nationaltheatre.org.uk.
