Hayley and Miriam have spent the last few weeks finding all the hundreds of listings that we have published. We’re sorry if we couldn’t publish everything we are sent but the summer magazine is our biggest of the year and with so much going on we simply run out of space. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 4 September.

Have a fantastic summer

Find out about Fostering

Have you ever thought about making a difference by fostering a child from your local area? Now is your chance to find out more at a Kent County Council fostering information event in the upcoming months. Kent County Council urgently needs foster homes in Kent for vulnerable children. You can offer a child support by opening up your home and help to transform the lives of children and young people in Kent by becoming a foster carer. The upcoming information events are a great opportunity for you to find out about fostering with Kent County Council. Current foster carers will share their experience and be on hand to answer your questions. There’s no need to book a place, just arrive in time for the presentation times listed below.

Stagecoach Tonbridge is a very active school and encourages students to take part in local and national events. The school has performed on numerous occasions on the West End stage such as Her Majesty’s Theatre and Shaftesbury Theatre. Children also take part in festivals, exams and are given the opportunity to join the Stagecoach Agency, providing a platform for children to attain professional work if they want to. Students have recently performed in CBeebies Mister Maker’s Arty Party and Sahil Sharma gained the part of ‘Samuel’ in The Railway Children performed at the Kings Cross Theatre in London. Stagecoach Tonbridge is a fantastic school with an inspiring Principal and dedicated team of teachers who can offer any child the chance to have fun, gain confidence and learn about performing arts. For more information visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/tonbridge or contact Wendy on 01444 456 208.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ is roaring back into theatres for a major UK tour, this year visiting fifty four venues before ending in December. Adapted and directed by David Wood OBE, Judith Kerr’s ever popular tale, ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, is the ideal introduction to theatre for children aged three plus and the perfect treat for the whole family. When Sophie and her Mummy welcome the hungry Tiger to tea, he proceeds to eat all the sandwiches, buns, biscuits and more. He even manages to drink all the water in the tap. What will Sophie’s Daddy say when he gets home? Join the Tiger, Sophie and her Mummy and Daddy, in this musical slice of teatime mayhem with sing-along songs, oodles of magic and lots of interactive fun when they come to Kent this summer. They’ll be at The Orchard Theatre from 21 – 23 August and also the Assembly Halls from 21 – 23 July.Visit www. orchardtheatre.co.uk or www.assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk for more information and to book. ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ is a 55 minute, musical treat. Summer at The Historic Dockyard Chatham

Registered Charity No. 239992. Company No. 633098

The Doc is back this summer with more experiments and more hands on fun! Having failed to travel through time last year – the Doc has decided that maths is needed as well as science. The activities that Doc.Yard and his assistant Bunsen will show this year will bring maths to life in a fun and engaging way which will include making rainbows with water fountains and learning the role that maths played in making ships at Chatham. Bringing together collections from major national institutions, the latest exhibition, Breaking the Chain, tells the story of the Dutch raid on the River Medway 350 years ago. Combined with all the usual fun including exploring the dockyard’s submarine HMS Ocelot, making rope in the Victorian Ropery and opportunities to let off steam in three unique play areas, your summer is sorted at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. Don’t forget, tickets last for a whole year so pay once and enjoy the site repeatedly for the next 12 months.

A Summer of Fun in Maidstone and Medway

With children in their last term before the long summer holiday, understandably parents are starting to think about how to keep them entertained over the break. Avoid the dreaded summer boredom by enrolling your child in a summer performing arts course. Razzamataz in Maidstone and Medway are offering children between the ages of 4 and 18 the opportunity to use their imaginations and work with experienced actors, musicians and dancers during their summer school from 31 July to 4 August at The Cornwallis Academy in Maidstone and Rainham School for Girls in Medway. During the week, children and their teachers will work on various songs, dances and drama pieces together with learning about theatre skills in general. Being given the chance to perform is paramount to building a child’s confidence which is why, on the last day, the children will all get the opportunity to perform their showcase to friends and families. Razzamataz offers exceptional part-time training in dance, drama and singing together with exciting opportunities to perform for children aged 2–18. Education News AE Publications

Taking a mental break over the summer holiday can result in academic regression. Primary school-age children are still developing the complex cognitive information processing strategies that enable them to effectively store, recognise and retrieve knowledge between their short and long-term memory. With limited practice of concepts, theories and techniques, children’s learning can be forgotten. They need to practise enough to ensure that what they have learnt is stored as effectively as possible in their long-term memory for later retrieval. Dr Stephen Curran, former government advisor on education and owner of AE Publications suggests that “quick and fun learning activities can stop children falling behind over the summer holidays” which “will make their return to school much easier.” Examples of these include: • Playing card games to develop visual memory skills, particularly if children are required to remember the cards other players hold in their hand. • Scrabble as an excellent way to develop children’s spelling and vocabulary skills. • A treasure hunt at the beach or in a park to help develop problem-solving skills. • Reading during the holiday, which can be encouraged by regular visits to the local library. • Counting of pocket money and working out or checking change to develop maths skills. • Playing memory games to support long-term memory processing.

Kent’s Rich Past Comes Alive With a Click

How much do you know about your county’s history? If your answer is “not enough,” then help lies in a unique and exciting project that gives teachers access to a free on-line educational resource to inspire young people to take a closer look at the rich heritage of where they live. And it’s also available to anyone else who would like to find out more. 100 Objects that Made Kent is led by The Historic Dockyard Chatham and supported by five partner museums including 26

3 July - 3 September 17

Canterbury Museums & Galleries. Museum teams identified 90 objects that define the county and invited schools and young people across Kent to complete the list by coming up with 10 more. They range from the Canterbury Cross to a Mummified Cat and the iconic Kent Spitfire. The 100 Objects that Made Kent project enriches and enlivens the school curriculum with real objects from Kent’s past. This educational resource can be used both in the classroom and during museum visits. The website can be searched by time, period, subject or Key Stage. Explore the objects today at www.100objectskent.co.uk.

Free Specialist Dyslexia Tuition

A 12-year-old dyslexic schoolboy from Aylesford took on Kent’s Ultim8 Challenge in June to raise money for his dream of creating a bursary to fund a child’s place at FlexiSchoolDyslexia based in Wrotham, Kent. Adam Blumsum, a former pupil of ‘Flexi-SchoolDyslexia’ joined other Warrior challengers in his bid to raise as much money as possible so that a child can be financially supported through their own learning journey at Flexi-SchoolDyslexia (FSD). The fund will be known as the ‘Blumsum Bursary’. As an ex-pupil of FSD himself, Adam told us, “One of the reasons I am now making progress is because, for nearly two years I attended FSD. They really helped fill the gaps in my learning. They taught me in a way that made sense to me, and gave me the confidence to try.” Parents wishing to apply for the bursary should email matt@ algarsacademy.co.uk as soon as possible. Acceptance for funding from the ‘Blumsum Bursary’ and a place at FSD is dependent upon financial status, extent of need and commitment to the learning journey by both pupil and parent. Interested parents are urged to come along to the Celebrate Dyslexia event at Wrotham Cricket Pavilion on Saturday 29 July from 2pm onwards, when priority applications will be processed. This free family-friendly event will include food stalls, exhibitions of specialist educational resources,

The Skinners’ Kent Academy

Primary Times spoke to Annie Daniels who is currently in Year 8 at The Skinners’ Kent Academy and Head Girl of Junior House. She told us “Alongside the wide range of subjects I study, the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme really helps me to become more involved and engaged in lessons. In Year 8, I have become more independent with my learning and the MYP helps me to know what I am learning and forms the background of all of my lessons. My knowledge of the world has increased. For instance in my Global Philosophy and Ethics class we learn about different religions and now when I read or watch the news, I understand it more and can relate my classroom learning to real world events. One of the things I like best about the MYP is how creative I can be. As the topics in all of our subjects link, I can incorporate aspects from all of my lessons into my writing tasks. For the future, the IB will provide me with skills and the mindset for different jobs as I will be able to be open minded, a risk taker and independent in what I do. The MYP framework really is the pathway to ensure I succeed in my future.”

Prepare your child for 11+ exam success AE Publications’ workbooks, testbooks and testpacks form a comprehensive range of extra-curricular study materials that you can use with your child at home.
