Be More Creative

Do you want to encourage your child’s creativity at home? Waterstones Children’s Laureate, Lauren Child, is on a mission to do just that with her new project, Staring into Space. As part of the project, Lauren has compiled a set of top tips for parents to help them draw out their child’s creativity at home. Try with your child to take 15 minutes every day to put things down and to think about nothing and allow your mind to clear. Don’t be afraid to allow your child to be bored. Boredom is often a time when inspiration comes. If she or he is suggesting doing something creative, try and react to them immediately. Try to see this as time for bonding and communication - as a child your enthusiasm wanes if someone suggests doing an activity later.

Toast Sculptures

One thing you can do is walk outside and look at things and discuss them together. It sounds really obvious, but often parents are trying to get somewhere and don’t take the time to properly look. Lauren and her daughter often discuss things they see dropped on the street or take pictures of buildings and then zoom in on the patterns and then go home and try to sketch them. Parents need to try to put their phones down so that children can see they are doing this. The benefit of this is to have time to clear your mind, but also to communicate with people face to face. Try not to have phones or devices at mealtimes so that texts or emails, however urgent they may seem, aren’t interrupting conversation and a time to share ideas and thoughts. Creative resources inspired by the theme of Staring into Space are available from www.childrenslaureate.org.uk. Lauren’s own website, where you can find out more about the project, is www.staringintospace.me.

Edward Debuts with Welsh National Opera

Rebecca Dales debut album Materna Requiem received its world premiere at The North Wales International Music Festival, held in St Asaph Cathedral on Saturday 22 September. Edward Hyde, from King’s Rochester School, was invited by the prestigious Welsh National Opera to sing as the treble soloist in an outstanding performance. Working alongside Welsh National Opera soloists and the New Sinfonia, the premiere of the piece, a beautifully moving and uplifting tribute to her late mother who died in 2010, was a great success, receiving a standing ovation from the sold out venue. Representatives from Decca Classics and the composer Rebecca Dale were thrilled with Edward’s performance commenting on his voice and professionalism. Edward, a Music Scholar at King’s Rochester, was approached by British composer Rebecca Dale at the start of the year to attend a recording session for her new release Materna Requiem. He is one of four vocal soloists featured on this piece in a number of movements, all being accompanied by The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Edward told Primary Times, “To be involved with this Requiem right from the very start with the technical recording through to recording with the Liverpool Philharmonic and finally performing it live for Welsh National Opera has been an amazing journey. I feel so very honoured.”

Mrs Bun the Baker’s Breakfast Roll Ups Here is a yummy recipe from Mrs Bun the Baker’s new book, Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker. These breakfast roll ups are really tasty for breakfast, or you could have them for brunch, take them for a packed lunch or a picnic. You can always make them the night before if you don’t have time in the morning, and warm them through in the oven when you want to eat them.

Roll out the dough: Tear the dough into two equal halves. Sprinkle some flour over your work surface, place a piece of dough on top, sprinkle with a little more flour, and roll it out. Keep the sides as straight as possible to create a rectangle measuring 30 x 18 cm with a thickness of ½ cm.

Ingredients:

Tip: Turn your dough as you roll to stop it sticking and flatten the sides which may not be rolling down.

200g self-raising flour 50g butter 100ml full fat milk 3 - 4 tablespoons tomato purée 3 rashers of cooked bacon 50g grated cheese Thinly sliced mushrooms

Method:

Preheat the oven to gas mark 4 or 180°c (160°c fan oven). Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Make the dough: Place the flour into a bowl. Chop the butter into cubes and add it to the flour. Pick up some flour and butter and rub it between your fingertips. Keep rubbing the mixture between your fingertips until it starts to look like breadcrumbs. Add half the milk and mix well with a spoon, adding the milk slowly. Add the rest of the milk and mix well until you have a soft, doughy mixture. Tip: The dough should fall away from your hands, not leave them sticky.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Kent

Start painting and decorating: Using the tomato purée tube, squeeze a face onto the pastry. Now, with the back of the spoon or a knife, spread the purée face all over the pastry, edge to edge. Rip up the bacon, using your fingers, and sprinkle it over the dough. Sprinkle over some grated cheese and thinly sliced mushrooms. Roll up, roll up: Take the edge nearest to you, tuck it in tightly and start rolling it up.You should have a long Swiss roll or sausage shape. Get cooking: Cut the sausage shape into 4–6 thick rings (use your knife like a saw to cut through). Place them ring side up on a baking tray and cook for 20 minutes. Enjoy! Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net.

Flipper’s Perfect Present Flipper is a very mischievous young penguin. He lives with his best friend Florence and wants to get her a perfect present for Christmas. Bard, the mysterious storyteller, has told Flipper and Florence the tale of Santa’s magic toy store, The Fantasticorium, and so Flipper decides that he is going to get to this Fantasticorium and find Florence the perfect present. On his way he meets an array of Christmas folk from Snow People to Reindeers

and a naughty Will o’ the Wisp, many of whom are not as helpful as they should be. Flipper’s Perfect Present is a fun and interactive early theatre experience for children. At the end of the show every child will also meet Santa and receive a gift in the grotto. Comments from the previous run at The Woodville include, “My two children (6 and 3) absolutely loved it, as did my husband and I, and my mum too. It was really sweet, funny and engaging. The story was fab and just right for a Christmas treat with little ones.” Flipper’s Perfect Present will be at the Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks, from 17 – 24 December. For more information, please visit www.stagsevenoaks.co.uk.

Put on Your Best Christmas Jumpers This Christmas, as well as producing one of the capital’s favourite pantomimes, Greenwich Theatre is set to welcome the award-winning SharkLegs Theatre Company back to Greenwich for a festive studio show with a difference. Almost as central to the festive season as turkey and mince pies, we have all seen the shops filling up with Christmas jumpers. Knitmas: A Winter Yarn tells the story of LongSleeves, a jumper whose arms aren’t the right size or the same length. One Christmas he was unwrapped, thrown aside and forgotten and he’s been alone ever since. Every Christmas he decorates a tree in the forest of Odds and Bods but this year, maybe he won’t have to do it alone.

Monday 17 December to Monday 24 December Flipper the Penguin wants to get the perfect Christmas present for Florence. Join him on his journey and see who he meets along the way……

Following last year’s Snowpocalypse, the company will once again run free pre-show craft workshops for children coming to the show, where everyone will make something to help our heroes light up the forest and realise that they are not alone in this mischievous and magical world. Creators Kezia Cole and Richard Hay told Primary Times, “It’s great to be returning to Greenwich Theatre again, last year was such a brilliant experience and got us feeling super Christmassy, so this year we are back with even more glitter and mischief. Knitmas is all about bringing people together and making sure that no one is forgotten, especially at this time of year.” Knitmas: A Winter Yarn plays from 4-30 December. For tickets and information, visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk.

theatregoers will also be treated to a world class gospel choir, performing live on stage at every performance. The six singers have been hand-picked for the show, and are among the busiest professional singers in the country. All of the vocalists are artists of choice for some of the biggest acts in the world, and regularly share stages with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Louisa Johnson, Michael Buble, Tiny Tempah, Justin Timberlake, Elton John, Madonna, John Legend, and Marc Almond. Members of the choir have joined headline artists on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, at London’s Hyde Park, and at the O2. On screen, you will have seen them on The X Factor, The Voice, Graham Norton and the MTV Music Awards. This Christmas, these six phenomenal artists will be found on stage at the Stag Theatre Sevenoaks. The choir will play the Council of London in the Panto, helping Dick Whittington on his way to defeating the wicked Queen Rat, saving the city from plague infested rats, and becoming the Lord Mayor of London. Whatever the Weather!

A Wilder Winter for your Children

Dinotropolis - a Dinosaur Adventure Park

Get busy with your children and create natural Christmas decorations, such as wood burned baubles, sparkling pine cones and twig stars, for your home and tree at Tyland Barn on 8 December.

Children (with a parent or guardian) have the chance to become real Dino Rangers when they explore the Jurassic world in the Discovery Cove, they can search for fossils in the Dino Dig and discover all of their favourite dinosaurs throughout the park, as they come face to face with the “living” animatronic beasts.

Kent Wildlife Trust has an array of events to help you and your children make this Christmas and winter a little more natural and full of adventure.

Learn a new skill at either their Woodcraft or Fire Time Forest Skills sessions, at Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve on 9 December. Children will get the chance to learn how to create and manage a fire pit at the Fire Time session, ending in some lovely toasted marshmallows. Santa and his elves will be visiting both Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve and Tyland Barn Visitor Centre on 15 and 16 December in his all natural Grottos. Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve will also play host to carol singers, a winter market, free nature walks and craft activities throughout both days, a full day of family fun! For more information about any of these events, visit www. kentwildlifetrust.org.uk Photo credit: Matthew Roberts

Once Upon a Time at Christmas

Dinotropolis has just opened at Bluewater. The attraction features animatronic dinosaurs, a dino jungle that is three storeys of soft play, dino interactives, raptor racing, a dino escape challenge and the tasty Fossil Café serving healthy, delicious food.

The park is both educational and fun as youngsters can build their own volcanoes at the scientific sand table, paint and draw anything their heart desires in the arts and crafts corner and then bring their hand drawn dinosaurs to life on huge interactive screens. They can also pit their wits and take their chances at sneaking past the sleeping monsters in the dino escape challenge. Tickets for Dinotropolis start from £12 for an Explorer Pass that gives full access to Dino Jungle, Raptor Racing Run and the Discovery Cove. The all-inclusive ranger pass for £20 includes the Dino escape challenge and a meal deal in the Fossil café where all the food is freshly made on site. Tickets can be booked via the website at www.dinotropolis.co.uk

Visit Leeds Castle this Christmas to join Paddington Bear and experience a selection of festive stories told through illustration. Celebrating 60 years since the classic by Michael Bond was published, the story of Paddington will continue with ‘Paddington and the Christmas Surprise’ in the seminar room. There is a lot more happening this festive season too. You can see the magnificent Castle rooms beautifully displayed with glittering decorations and fragrant pine trees styled around wellknown and much-loved traditional winter tales. Children and adults alike will recognise characters from ‘The Nutcracker’ and ‘The Snow Queen’ and much more. Be careful not to wake Sleeping Beauty and look out for Scrooge in the depiction of Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’. Another ‘don’t miss’ is the 20ft showpiece tree in the Inner Hall. The annual Christmas Market will also be in full swing with a splendid array of seasonal gifts, toys, decorations and specialist food and drink. Their spectacular outdoor Ice Rink is back from 15 November - 6 January, and it’s undercover, so perfect for families to enjoy whatever the weather. Beginners can take to the ice with seal-shaped skating aids for kids or with bob skates for those finding their feet. Skate lessons can be booked for those looking to learn how to whirl, glide and slide. Dedicated sessions are also available for school visits and birthday parties. Friday night is party night with KMFM, making it a fun experience for all. Bluewater’s enchanting Santa’s Grotto is open from 15 November - 24 December. Little ones can embark on a unique Christmas adventure and enjoy a magical 4D screening of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Children will visit Mrs. Claus’ room for a fun craft activity, meet Reggie the animatronic reindeer and, of course, they’ll meet Santa himself. Each child will take home a soft toy. Photographs with Santa can be purchased upon leaving the Grotto. The Giving Tree at Bluewater returns on the 8 November spreading festive cheer. Guests can donate a gift and help to give local disadvantaged children a better Christmas. Bluewater is once again encouraging everyone to grab a tag and buy an extra gift for a child in need. Guests big and small can head to the tree, located in the Upper Mall outside M&S, to donate their gifts. Booking is advised for all events. To purchase tickets, please visit www.bluewater.co.uk.

Gravity Winter Pass

Christmas isn’t complicated for kids. It’s the one time of year they don’t want to do something new and different. In the lead up to the big day and in the aftermath of wrapping paper and leftovers, it’s all about family and friends, holly and carols, trees and twinkly lights, cloudy breath and warming treats. Explore historic houses decorated for Christmas of years gone by, then tackle festive trails around the winter gardens and estates. Warm chilly hands in front of a roaring fire or join in Christmas crafts. Every time you visit, you help to keep those Christmas lights twinkling bright for years to come. Head over to your local National Trust places in Kent for your fix of festive magic. Take a frosty walk or Christmas trail at Scotney Castle, Emmetts Garden or Chartwell, see manor houses like Ightham Mote decked in the sparkling splendour of their heyday or cosy up in the café at Knole for seasonal treats and browse with the children for gifts in the shop. They have an uncanny knack for knowing just what would make grandpa smile on Christmas Day. Visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lists/christmas-in-kent Photo credit: National Trust Images/John Miller

Hempstead Valley is getting festive this Christmas. Father Christmas’s traditional grotto opened on Saturday 17 November. One of the stars of The Central Theatre, Chatham’s pantomime, Dick Whittington, was on hand to officially welcome Father Christmas. Another Seven Simple and Slightly Silly Stories by John Foley John Foley’s second collection of darkly witty short stories for adults and children, Another Seven Simple and Slightly Silly Stories, is now available, with 100% of the profits donated to Mencap, a UK charity working to improve the lives of those with learning disabilities. John Foley presents another set of seven charmingly quirky and remarkable fables, inspired by his time living in Hans Christian Andersen’s house in Copenhagen. In each magical tale, Foley brings new, wondrous worlds to life, transporting you to universes in which hotel lifts talk, puddles have feelings and reindeer learn to read. Each delightful story carries an important and surprising sting in its tale. Demonstrating the true magic of storytelling, Foley’s twists and turns imbue his extraordinary tales with wisdom, revealing a deeper meaning that’s anything but ‘silly’. In Foley’s own words, these stories have been written for ‘the young at heart aged 10 to 110’ and showcase the power of reading and storytelling to develop empathy, identification and learning, at any age. Another Seven Simple and Slightly Silly Stories is available direct from www. quizzicalworks.com at £7.50 (p&p included) and also from bookshops and Amazon. 20

According to the charity Young Minds, an average of three children in every classroom suffer from a diagnosable mental health problem such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder. This is a staggering statistic and as a parent, not something you ever want your child to have to deal with. From body image and social media to peer pressure, there are so many obstacles that young people face which can really affect mental health. Combating these mental health issues from a young age is key. The performing arts offer children a fantastic platform to be expressive and channel emotions, bravery and courage, whilst learning new skills, being active, having fun with other local children and ultimately growing in confidence. Stagecoach Performing Arts inspires every child to unlock their potential. By splitting classes into singing, dancing and acting, children have the freedom to be creative within a structured and safe environment. Stagecoach has already made a difference to over one million students’ lives. Stagecoach runs Early Stages classes for 4-6 year olds, encouraging young children to use their imagination and make new friends. Main Stages for 6-18 year olds (divided by age into three groups) enable children to work together to be creative and have fun in a nurturing and supportive setting. If you and your child are interested in finding out more you can go along for a two week trial at the start of the Spring term. Every year, educators from every corner of the UK take part in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch, turning their pupils into conservation scientists and helping the RSPB track the ups and downs of birds across the country. There are a host of different activity ideas on the website that you and your class can do, both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as resources and videos. 73,000 school children and teachers took part in the birdwatch in 2017 counting more than 100,000 birds. The blackbird remained the most common playground visitor for the ninth year in succession with over 88% of schools spotting at least one. The top three was rounded off by the starling and woodpigeon. The Birdwatch takes just one hour and teachers can pick any day during the first half of the spring term to take part. It works across a wide age and ability range and there’s plenty of flexibility to run it as simply as teachers would like either as the centrepiece of crosscurricular studies, project work, or a way to improve their outdoor space. Registration is open and the final day for results submission is the 22 February. After this the RSPB will share the results of your surveys so your class can see how their research is contributing. Competitions On 2 and 3 February, Greenwich Theatre welcomes Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monk’s Singing Mermaid to the stage – and we have three family tickets to give away to this beautiful puppetry production! The show tells the story of the singing mermaid, and the day that she is tempted away from all of her sea creature friends and her peaceful home at Silversands to join a travelling circus. The audiences love to hear her sing, but the poor mermaid was tricked! Will she ever escape? Brought to the stage by Samantha Lane and Barb Jungr, who worked on both We’re Going On A Bear Hunt and How To Hide A Lion at Greenwich Theatre, this entrancing musical show is perfect for very young children – and you and your family could be there. To find out more and book tickets to the show, visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk. Listen Out for Owls The British Trust for Ornithology is asking the great British public to participate in a national study of Tawny Owls and their calling behaviour by listening out for them this autumn and winter. Tawny Owl populations are thought to be in decline and the species has recently been added to the Amber List of Birds of Conservation Concern. The Tawny Owl is arguably our best known owl. Even if you have never seen one you will probably recognise the ‘twit-twoo’ call uttered in harmony by a pair of Tawny Owls. The call of the female is an eerie ‘kewick’ and that of the male in reply is a shivering, ‘whoo’. Put together and you get ‘kewick-whoo’ or put another way, ‘twit-twoo’. Anyone can participate, and parents, teachers and children are asked to listen out for calling Tawny Owls from their garden, local park or piece of woodland. Register online at www.bto.org/owls or email gbw@bto.org for more information. The survey runs until 31 March 2019. You don’t have to commit to listening every week, but you’ll be providing valuable data by recording for as many weeks as you can. It is just as important, if you take part, to tell BTO if you don’t hear an owl. They will then know where there aren’t any owls and you can consider yourself a ‘zero hero’. 26

Southern Le Marche is a treasure trove of hidden gems, an area full of stunning landscapes as well as being welcoming, peaceful and away from mass tourism. Families can learn about Roman Civilization at the excellent museum and partially restored temple at Monte Rinaldo or the archeologically excavated town of Urbisaglia. Both sites are small and therefore ideal for holding the attention of children. Palazzo Leone is located in the tiny medieval hamlet of Montelparo with amazing views across the Le Marche countryside to the blue Adriatic Sea. Positioned in the foothills of the Sibillini National Park, the property is not far from the coast and the bustling seaside resort of San Benedetto del Tronto. This chic boutique hotel has been completely renovated whilst keeping as many of the original features as possible. A charming mix of contemporary and antique furnishings fill the hotel with character and ambience. The accommodation is spread over 3 floors and consists of 8 en suite guest rooms and suites. Outside the panorama stretches from the Adriatic Sea to the Sibillini mountains, and the terrace and infinity pool are set amidst scented flowering borders – perfect for relaxing. A shaded lounge terrace furnished with comfy chairs and hammocks completes the picture of a little slice of paradise. Nestled in the side of a grassy knoll in a Suffolk woodland, Pod Hollow brings the magic of Tolkien’s Middle-earth to life. From the moment excited visitors step through Pod Hollow’s perfectly round wooden door, it will feel as though they are stepping into a Hobbit’s storybook. The self-catering home sleeps 4 (+1) and is perfect for mid-week and weekend holidays all year round. Pod Hollow was constructed for numerous reasons. It was created to offer something very special to enhance the existing Glamping experience West Stow Pods already offers.Although the Pods are very successful (they were named as one of The Guardian’s 10 Best Glamping Sites in the UK in 2016) the company wanted something a little different. With the Anglo-Saxon Village a stone’s throw away and its connection with Tolkien, a Halfling-style construction seemed like the obvious thing to supplement both sites, with only the King’s Forest separating them. Inside Pod Hollow’s subterranean chambers, guests will find two double bedrooms, a sitting room, a fully fitted kitchen/diner and a shower room. On cold winter evenings, cosy up in front of the feature fireplace, the perfect backdrop for recounting tales of dragons and lost treasure. Like hairy-footed Halfling friends,West Stow Pods know how important comfort is, especially being so close to nature. If the weather is fine, get out and about and explore experiences within easy reach of Pod Hollow. Continue the Middle-earth adventure at West Stow Anglo-SaxonVillage, or for great outdoor experiences, head to High Lodge for cycling and walking trails as well as tree-top adventures at Go Ape.Alternatively, simply relax by taking a stroll around the enchanting gardens at Fullers Mill or explore the historic town of Bury St Edmunds with its stunning cathedral, Abbey Gardens, shops and cafés.
