Stage School Beats off the Bullies

It is a well-known fact that bullying and poor mental health are problems amongst children with 1 in 2 admitting to being bullied and 1 in 3 suffering from a mental health problem. These are worrying statistics, and something the Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School is working towards changing. The multiple award-winning school has just won a £10,000 grant from The National Lottery and Big Lottery Fund to deliver anti-bullying workshops to schools across London. These invaluable workshops will incorporate drama, singing and dance to encourage communication, teamwork and self-confidence amongst primary and secondary school students. Principal Anna Fiorentini launched the initiative after seeing the overwhelmingly positive affect her school’s classes have had on her students’ confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing. The part-time school, which has branches across London, provides exceptional performing arts training for 4-18 year-olds delivered by top industry professionals. Whilst success stories include students gaining leading roles on both stage and screen, the school prides itself equally on its ability to instil a sense of purpose, self-belief and a thirst for learning in its students. To find out more about anti-bullying workshops or classes at Anna Fiorentini’s London branches contact hello@annafiorentini.com , call 020 7682 1403 or visit www.annafiorentini.com.

Beanstalk Need Reading Helpers Life is better when everyone can read well and express themselves confidently. However, low levels of literacy continue to be a persistent problem both nationally and locally. In London alone, 23,968 children left primary school unable to read at the expected standard for their age. Starting secondary school behind their peers can have a knock on effect for children and impact on the rest of their education and work life. Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that recruits, trains and supports volunteers (reading helpers) to work in primary schools with children who have fallen behind in reading. This support enables the children to close the gap between them and their peers. Beanstalk is searching for members of the community in Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich to help work with children in local primary schools. Reading helpers will work with children who struggle with reading or are reluctant readers. They work with three children, twice a week for 30 minutes (term-time only for one academic year). The reading sessions are one-to-one, fun and informal. This support transforms the child’s approach to learning and creates a love for reading. Across London, Beanstalk reading helpers work with over 3700 children but more need support is needed every day. No experience or qualifications are required, just a love of reading and desire to work with children. Beanstalk provides training and ongoing support. For more information or to apply, please visit the website at www. beanstalkcharity.org.uk or call Beanstalk on 08454 500 301. 4

Well Done Oliver

Congratulations to Oliver Carpenter from St Joseph’s Primary School who won the competition to design this year’s Primary Times Christmas card with his fabulous picture of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. We’re really looking forward to sending out all those cards with Oliver’s lovely picture. The cards are produced in support of Primary Times’ charity of the year 2018, Mary’s Meals.

Mary’s Meals provides life-sustaining and life-changing meals to more than one million of the world’s poorest children every school day. Their idea is simple. They provide a nutritious daily meal in school which attracts chronically hungry children into the classroom where they will receive an education and learn skills that can offer them a route out of poverty.

Corporate account facilities available offering unbeatable rates. New owner drivers welcome to join our expanding team.

In Malawi, the charity’s largest programme, Mary’s Meals provides a mug of vitamin-enriched maize porridge to more than 800,000 children every day they attend school. World Porridge Day in October celebrated the huge difference a daily mug of porridge can make to the lives of desperately hungry children. More than one million children are already receiving life-changing meals every day, but with 61 million children across the world out of school and many more hungry, the work is just beginning. It costs just 6p to provide a life-changing meal to a chronically hungry child so every penny raised for Mary’s Meals really makes a difference. Find out more about Mary’s Meals, donate and get some great fundraising ideas from their website www.marysmeals.org. Three generous donors have pledged to match up to £1.9 million worth of donations between 1 November and the 31 December. That means that donations are doubled!

Blackheath Village Day

Saturday 2 December is the day when Blackheath celebrates the festive season with a day of events across Blackheath Village from 1pm culminating with the switching on of the Christmas lights. As always Blackheath Halls are privileged to be involved and will be holding free performances throughout the day from a variety of community singing and instrumental groups. The annual Festive Family SingA-Long at 3.15pm will see local families singing their hearts out to popular Christmas classics such as Jingle Bells and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer before the audience process up to the Christmas lights switch-on straight after the event. For more information on the day itself visit www.blackheathhalls.com/whats-on or follow @ bhvillageday on twitter.

Greenwich Theatre’s Snow-pocalypse: Friendship Never Melts is a wild and wacky winter show for 4+ years. The last two people in the world find the last book in the world and it’s a book all about something called ‘Christmas’. Trilby and The-Boot have never had a winter, or a snow ball fight, or even a pig in a blanket. What they do have is each other and maybe, just maybe, that is enough. Follow Snow-pocalypse’s two hapless heroes as they try to discover what this Crimbo-thing is really all about. What are presents? What is the point of tinsel? More importantly, will it snow? With silliness, light-up antlers and a whole lot of snow, the show’s two unlikely heroes create a wintery wonderland in a world where anything can be made from the scraps left behind and magic and mayhem is around every corner. Are you dreaming of a White Snowpocalypsmas? Before the show, everyone can join the team to discover the treasures hidden in the things people discard. In the interactive crafting workshop you will make something that will be used in the actual performance that very day and after the show you can take what you made home for your own crafty Christmas. Snow-pocalypse: Friendship Never Melts will be running from 8 – 30 December at Greenwich Theatre. For more information and to book your tickets go to www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk.

Let’s All Dance is a professional dance company creating shows for family audiences. Artistic Director, Orit Sutton told Primary Times, “We believe passionately that dance and the Arts should be accessible to everyone. We tour extensively and keep our ticket prices as low a possible to ensure thousands of children every year can watch and be inspired by our fantastic live shows.” With the festive season fast approaching the company has two fabulous shows on offer. Teddy Bears’ Picnic is going into The Arts Theatre (West End) on 18 and 19 November and the Christmas classic, The Nutcracker, tours November to January and will visit some superb venues including The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury, Blackheath Halls and Sadler’s Wells. Both productions are also available for school bookings. All the productions are specifically designed for children and young people, including those with special needs, and combine superb dancing, crystal clear story telling and stunning costumes. Orit told us, “It’s never too early to introduce children to the magic of live theatre and we pride ourselves on engaging all our young audiences for the whole show. We also offer photo opportunities for children with our dancers after every performance which is a very special moment for them and makes great memories for family members.” For full tour dates and venues, as well as information about classes and parties, visit www.lets-all-dance.co.uk, email info@lets-all-dance. co.uk or call 020 8265 4634.

Get ready to cheer, boo and hiss as poor downcast overworked Cinders played by Katherine Vennard, searches for her one and only true love, Prince Charming, played by Ryan Duscha, despite the actions of her hideous Ugly sisters Ursula and Cruella who try their best to stop Cinders getting to the Royal Ball. Buttons and Cinderella have been best friends for years. He would like it to be more, but Cinders is oblivious to his feelings, so poor Buttons always ends up in the friend zone. Throw in an Evil stepmother and her downtrodden hubby the Baron, a Magical Fairy Godmother, two dodgy wheeler dealers in the name of Slime & Grime, the required Sparkling glass slippers and an exuberant chorus, and you are in for a treat. With fabulous costumes, laugh out loud comedy, traditional audience participation and slapstick humour, this all singing all dancing extravaganza directed and choreographed by Kirsty Davide promises to make your panto experience unforgettable. Traditions of Christmas at Leeds Castle

This December, visit “the loveliest castle in the world” for a festive family day out. The magnificent Castle rooms will be beautifully displayed with glittering decorations and fragrant pine trees styled around Christmas traditions, past and present. Move through the Castle to the Queen’s Gallery lavishly decorated using traditional festive flowers and plants including holly, ivy and poinsettias. Discover why certain plants are significant at Christmas time. Wonder at the impressive 25ft Christmas tree in the Castle’s Inner Hall, dressed with bespoke Leeds Castle Christmas crackers. Marvel at the giant illustrative Christmas card with a tree growing inside in Lady Baillie’s Bedroom and don’t miss the wooden Leeds Castle shaped advent calendar in the Catherine of Aragon Bedroom. Children can follow a free Christmas pudding trail in selected rooms through the Castle, to be rewarded with a chocolate sixpence for joining in the fun. The annual Christmas Market will take place from 10am to 5pm on selected dates in November and December with a splendid array of seasonal gifts, toys, festive decorations, specialist food and drink and a chance to meet the reindeer and birds of prey. In the centre of the market, visitors can enjoy a nostalgic fairground with rides on the Victorian carousel and the high flying ‘chair-o-planes’ or take a leisurely trip on the big wheel for a spectacular view of the Castle.

London Boat Show

Visit the Beach Club where instructors will be on hand to teach children and families the techniques of some of the hottest water sports trends including stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and dinghy sailing all from the comfort of the beautiful man-made beach at the Show. They also have an activity pool at the event where kids can don their wetsuits and try out what they’ve learnt on the sand but on water. Advance tickets start from £15, with two children under the age of 15 going free with each adult. www.londonboatshow.com

Santa’s Grotto at Museum of London Docklands

Get into the Christmas spirit with a visit to see Santa in a unique and authentic Victorian grotto at the Museum of London Docklands. Experience Sailortown, a life-size reconstruction of a 19th century riverside street, transformed with festive decorations and the sound of Victorian carols in the distance. Find Santa in his secret grotto, tell him your Christmas wishes and receive a special gift. You can also take home a photograph of the magical moment for an additional cost.

A Medieval Christmas at Red House

Experience all things medieval this Christmas at Red House. Explore the house, bedecked in traditional decorations of dried hops and lavender, just as William Morris would have known it. Let Olde Father Christmas, dressed in green, enthral you with tales of Christmas past. Help the team at Red House revive the age old tradition of Wassailing and bless the ancient orchard for the year ahead. Start the festivities by creating your own Wassailing Crown using lavender, dried hops and flowers. Once suitably bedecked, join the wassailing procession around the grounds and through the orchard, blessing the trees with cider and paying thanks to the robin, the orchard’s protector. Warm up afterwards with a glass of hot mulled cider and reply to the toastmaster’s shout of ‘Wassail!’ with ‘Drinc hael!’ The perfect antidote for those winter blues.

Stagecoach Performing Arts

Every child needs the chance to explore their potential and have an outlet for their creativity. Give them the courage to be themselves at Stagecoach Performing Arts. None of us knows what the future holds, which is why it is so important for children to be prepared for the world with resilience and confidence. Stagecoach aims to deliver this through their extracurricular Performing Arts classes. By enabling children to unlock their potential, they offer not only specialised Performing Arts training but develop life skills that children need to adapt in the real world. The Performing Arts are so much more than singing, dancing and acting. Children of all abilities get the chance at Stagecoach to build confidence, make new friends with like-minded individuals and learn teamwork whilst being part of a community. The weekly 3-hour classes focus equally on singing, dancing and acting with an inspirational specialist teacher for each discipline. Eva Johnson, 12, and her brother Sam, 10, are now Stagecoach regulars after initially attending a two-week trial a couple of years ago. Their mum told Primary Times, “My children absolutely loved it. They came home after the first day and were full of chatter about the friends they’d made and the fun they’d had.” Classes run during school term time. Stagecoach offers classes in singing, dancing and acting and your child can see what it’s all about in a two-week trial during the term for youngsters aged 4 to 18. To find out more about taking a two-week trial please call your local Stagecoach.

Actors can take improvisation based classes as well as syllabus classes leading to LAMDA examinations, and the Youth Company and Junior Company work on regular Full Scale Productions. Step Up Performing Arts was set up nearly 20 years ago by Nathalie Richardson after she gained her music degree at The Guildhall School of Music. Step Up comprises three different branches all of which are managed by Nathalie who told Primary Times, “The key to Step Up’s success is ensuring that every child is encouraged to develop their own individual skills in a nurturing and positive atmosphere. Whether the children go on into the performing arts or not, Step Up aims to give all the children the life skills required to be successful in their lives. Whether your child is young or a teenager, they are all offered the same opportunities. Bullying Workshops for Schools

The multiple award-winning Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School has just won a £10,000 grant from The National Lottery and Big Lottery Fund to deliver anti-bullying workshops to schools across London. These invaluable workshops, which are free to schools, will incorporate drama, singing and dance to encourage communication, teamwork and self-confidence amongst primary and secondary school students. Principal Anna Fiorentini launched the initiative after seeing the overwhelmingly positive affect her school’s classes have had on her students’ confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing. To find out more about anti-bullying workshops or to sign up for your school, contact hello@annafiorentini.com , call 020 7682 1403 or visit www.annafiorentini.com.

Friends of the Earth Teaching Resources

Environmental charity Friends of the Earth has launched a Clean Air Schools Pack, a free educational resource to help primary school students learn about air pollution. The launch of the pack, endorsed by the National Union of Teachers, coincides with new guidance from the National Education Union which urges schools to monitor air pollution and learn about pollution in lessons. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. Dirty air can cause and worsen asthma, impact brain development and even lead to smaller lung development. There are currently over 2000 schools, colleges and nurseries located in places with illegal levels of dirty air. Geared towards Key Stage Two, the packs contain three lesson plans to help transform pupils into budding scientists including air monitoring tubes which allow students to test for the harmful gas nitrogen dioxide. The pupils then get the opportunity to learn campaigning skills to make their voices heard.

Muna Suleiman, Friends of the Earth air pollution campaigner told Primary Times, “We know the health effects of air pollution can be especially bad for children. Studies show that dirty air can cause and worsen asthma, impact brain development and can even reduce lung capacity for life. Our children deserve better. That’s why we’re committed to educating this generation about air pollution with our Clean Air Schools Pack.”

On Demand in Schools

The National Theatre’s On Demand in Schools service is the theatre’s digital initiative offering acclaimed, curriculum-linked productions, free of charge, to schools across the country. Every primary and secondary school in the UK can access world-class theatre on demand. The latest production to be added to the On Demand selection is last Christmas’s acclaimed Peter Pan. This wondrously inventive production of JM Barrie’s much loved tale sees a wonderfully headstrong Wendy and her brothers accompany Peter to Neverland, where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await and a riot of magic, music and make-believe ensues. Watch out for an amazing crocodile. On Demand in Schools complements trips to see live performances, enabling students to study plays day-to-day in their classroom. The plays are recorded in high definition in front of a live theatre audience by the National Theatre’s award-winning NT Live team and are available exclusively to UK schools. Teachers can study key scenes with students or show the full production over a number of lessons. Comprehensive learning resources produced by teachers and leading artists support each play.
