The Acorn Group have been supporting and sponsoring local schools, charities and communities for a number of years but in 2018, the Group’s Corporate and Social Responsibility team embarked on a project quite unlike any other. Following a chance meeting between Acorn’s CEO Rob Sargent and Jo Chandler, Head of Governors at St Saviour’s School, the Acorn CSR team offered to refurbish the Lewisham Primary School’s uninspiring library facility and transform it into a colourful, engaging and vibrant space to learn. Both the staff and students were involved in the creative design, and thousands of brilliant books were donated by the public to stock the new space. Having been blown away by both the quality and quantity of books donated, The Acorn Group decided to develop the book collection idea into an ongoing initiative, and at the end of 2018 the Acorn Book Club launched. The Acorn Book Club (or ABC) works with the public, their staff and clients throughout The Acorn Group to ensure preloved children’s books get into the hands of local schools, hospices and organisations that do not have sufficient funding to purchase them from new. Donations are accepted at any Acorn, Langford Russell or John Payne office within the Group’s extensive London and Kent branch network. These books are then redistributed locally, with the aim of promoting a life-long love and passion for reading! If you’d like any further information please visit www.acornbookclub. co.uk, or to express an interest in a donation of books, please contact Emma Fox emma.fox@acornbookclub.co.uk.
If you had booked this space 51,500 families could be reading all about your business... Don’t delay, call Lola today

The Dinosaur Department Store Feisty heroine Eliza Jane isn’t your average child. Some called her wilful, some called her wild. Instead of a fluffy bunny, Eliza Jane has her heart firmly set on a prehistoric pet. Join her and her family on a marvellous magical tour of their local dinosaur department store. From huge, stomping sauropods stretching their necks to a pair of loved-up Ankylosaurs called Maud and Frank, there are plenty of amazing dinosaurs for Eliza Jane to choose from. But this wild child is hatching a mischievous plan of her own. With the potential to inspire an interest in STEM fields such as palaeontology (the study of dinosaurs) or protecting species in the wild (conservation), this really wild, fun and adventurous picture book encourages further learning through an introduction to dinosaur names and characteristics. The final page features fun ‘selfies’ of the dinosaurs mentioned in the text and a pronunciation guide to help children learn how to say their names. Using witty rhyming text by author Lily Murray and the rich and vivid art of bestselling illustrator Richard Merritt, this roaring tale will appeal to adventurous children everywhere. The Dinosaur Department Store is available online and from all good high street retailers for £6.99. 10

World of Work Trails
Unpack all our city has to offer with the London Curriculum World of Work Trails and take the family out to explore some exciting areas of London this spring and summer. Last year, the Mayor’s London Curriculum team launched a series of World of Work trails for schools and families. The aim is to inspire children to start thinking about careers in London and what’s on offer in this brilliant city. The trails cover different areas of London – Southwark, Covent Garden, Old Street, Shoreditch and Stratford, with Brixton coming soon! Each trail has a different theme and includes all kinds of activities and information about types of work that children might do when they’re older. Children will learn about jobs from the past, discover the work people do today and imagine what work might be like in the future. The London Curriculum is a fun way of teaching young people about the city using London as a classroom. Schools in London are already enjoying free primary and secondary teaching resources. With these trails, parents and carers can join in too. Find out more at www.london.gov.uk/world-ofwork-trails and www.london.gov.uk/london-curriculum

All the Arts
Award winning theatre school All the Arts have been reaching the national press this month with their pupils looking on target to reach the Number One slot in the iTunes charts. Pupils from the theatre school based in Chislehurst, Bexley and New Eltham were chosen to sing on the album of classical cross over artist Joanna Forest entitled ‘The Rhythm of Life’. The album has received a great deal of media attention, due to it being used in schools to musically inspire children. Principal Lucy Morgans told Primary Times, “We are delighted that our pupils have won the opportunity to show their brilliant singing on this album. Some of them sang solo and they are featured heavily in songs including ‘Food Glorious Food’ and ‘I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing’. It is amazing exposure to the professional world of singing and they have loved every minute”. Singing isn’t the only skill that pupils from All the Arts are excelling in. Students are also performing for The National Theatre in brand new play ‘Chaos’ which will debut at The Bob Hope and Albany Theatres over Easter. Lucy said, “We are committed to providing these exceptional opportunities for our pupils and seeing how their confidence is soaring is a joy to watch and makes us so proud”. Schools Gear Up for the Big Pedal
This week, starting 25 March, nearly 1,400 schools are taking part in Sustrans Big Pedal 2019 – the UK’s largest cycling, walking and scooting challenge for schools. This year’s competition is backed by Angellica Bell, British television, radio presenter and cycling advocate. Organised by the walking and cycling charity Sustrans, the competition will run from Monday 25 March to Friday 5 April and will encourage young people from across the UK to travel by bike, foot or scooter for their journey to and from school. During the 10 days, participating primary and secondary schools will compete with one another to make the most journeys by bike, foot or scooter. To coincide with this year’s event, dozens of schools across the UK will, for the first time, be closing the road outside the school gates to motor vehicles. This is to limit the volume of traffic and help reduce air pollution, while creating an environment in which cycling and walking is safe, convenient and enjoyable. The theme of this year’s Big Pedal is ‘Travelling around the body’, with pupils tracking their progress on a wall chart, learning about the human body and how active travel benefits their health as they go. This year’s competition aims to build on the success of 2018 which saw over 1,300 schools register to take part with teachers, parents, siblings and pupils making more than a million journeys to school by bike or scooter. For more information about the event, please visit www.bigpedal.org.uk Photo credit: ©Sustrans/Paul Tanner
Outdoor learning is exciting and challenging and carries enormous personal and social rewards, which is why the Junior School at Colfe’s places great emphasis on providing such opportunities across the key stages. They are at the heart of the Junior School learning journey and are highly beneficial for the children’s all-round development. Colfe’s youngest children enjoy weekly sessions in the Forest School. The curriculum embraces the ‘great outdoors’ as an inspirational place of learning where the children explore the natural world, build confidence and self-esteem. They learn new life skills develop independence and resilience. Whether engaged in growing food, whittling wood, tree climbing or finding bugs in the undergrowth, the children thrive in this unique environment. As the children move further through the school, annual residential trips become a key part of the curriculum – from activity days spent sailing, climbing and abseiling to camping in tepees. Time spent away from the classroom, engaged in fun and exciting activities, encourages a sense of personal responsibility. Relaxing and playing within a wider group is also hugely important in allowing children to develop teambuilding skills and grow enduring friendships. The breadth of these learning opportunities offered at Colfe’s serves to inspire a lifelong love of adventure. Colfe’s Junior School Open Morning is 9am–11am on Tuesday 14 May. Wally wasn’t hard to find at Belmont Primary School this World Book Day! The children of Year 6 all dressed up as Wally and everywhere you looked there she/he was. This year was their last year of dressing up as they’re all off to secondary school in September, so they decided to go with stripes. The children had great fun dressing in Wally’s distinctive and easily recognisable outfit. They looked really good individually and amazing together. Where’s Wally? is a series of children’s puzzle books created by illustrator Martin Handford and published by Walker Books. Readers are challenged to find a character named Wally hidden in a group picture full of people. Thank you to everyone at Belmont Primary School for sharing their day with us. If your school would like to tell us about some of the things you’re doing, we’d love to hear about it.
