School’s Out for Summer..... and Primary Times is going to be your best friend this school holiday! Welcome to the biggest help you are going to use this summer. There’s no need to get stressed, no need for the constant “what are we doing today”, simply keep your copy of Primary Times handy and look through our comprehensive listings to see what’s on. Primary Times has the best set of listings for primary aged children anywhere. Nobody does it better! We have worked night and day to source them and have spent hours checking, double checking and proof reading them. Having said that we do produce some of them a long time in advance so do remember to check with the venue for any updates before planning a trip. We don’t usually mention cost and full details as we just don’t have room so do check first if you need more information. As well as being loved for our listings, our competitions are pretty popular too! In this magazine look out for a chance to win an Xbox One and copy of LEGO The Incredibles game. We have a fantastic word search competition with a top prize of the Xbox One, game and goody bag plus two runners up prizes of LEGO The Incredibles goody bags. Don’t forget to enter all our other competitions too and remember to include your details if you do enter. We can’t notify you if you don’t let us know who you are.... Farewell and good luck to all our Year 6 readers off to secondary school. There isn’t a secondary school version of Primary Times but if you still want to see us take a look in your local library.

Greenwich Theatre Premieres the Jungle Book This year Greenwich Theatre is launching a new family summer show to complement the venue’s acclaimed annual pantomime. Directed by Artistic Director James Haddrell and with set design by their regular panto designer Cleo Pettitt, the show will be the UK premiere of a new version of The Jungle Book. James Haddrell told Primary Times, “I loved The Jungle Book when I was growing up. I think one of the magical things about the story is that it can genuinely appeal to any age. From the basic tale of a boy lost in the jungle who befriends the animals, to ideas about gradually growing up and finding your place in the world, and even thoughts about the environmental challenges faced by the jungle - there is something there for everyone.” This version has been written by Canadian playwright Tracey Power and the Greenwich run will be the first in the UK. “We are very proud to be producing this premiere” continued James Haddrell. “Tracey’s version is a fast, exciting retelling of the story, from Mowgli’s appearance in the jungle to his discovery of the human world outside. The major characters are all going to be played by a fantastic team of actors, but there will also be some puppetry in the show as well as some really exciting percussion performed by the cast.” The cast includes Joseph Black, Antonia Elson, David Hubball, Serin Ibrahim and Kandaka Moore. The production runs at Greenwich Theatre from 15-26 August before transferring to the Stantonbury Theatre in Milton Keynes. To book, call the Box Office on 020 8858 7755 or visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk. 2 July - 2 Sept 2018

Fish Dream of Trees “Are they for eating or wearing? Are they weapons of war? The aliens were puzzled What on earth are books for?” In Fish Dream of Trees there are lions and tigers and mice galore, not to mention a whole host of other bizarre and loveable creatures. Each surreal, four line ditty is fully-colour illustrated, coming together in a collection of over 30 individual nonsense poems. Wander into a world of vain dragons, hiccupping elephants and child-eating plants. Axel Scheffler’s delightful artwork brings to life these playful and easily accessible poems by Frantz Wittkamp, wonderfully adapted from German to English by national treasure and poet Roger McGough. McGough’s adaptations are shot through with his trademark wordplay and wit, while Scheffler’s brilliantly illustrated cast of characters make this book a rich delight for all ages. Playful, surreal, and even sometimes a little sad, each page holds a new treasure. The short length of the poems combined with the detailed artwork from Axel makes this book ideal for introducing poetry to the very young or reluctant reader. Children will delight at the funny, joyful stories that the poems tell and their satisfying, easy rhymes, while the often tongue-in-cheek subject matters will make grown-ups smile too. A beautiful hardback with a jacket covered in shiny gold details, Fish Dream of Trees is an excellent gift, RRP £12.99. 12

Computer Coding Holiday Workshops for Kids
Computational thinking – the instinctive ability to understand how computers behave, and by extension, how to command a computer to do your bidding – is as important as numeracy and literacy in today’s world. Spark4Kids specialises in teaching kids how to write software, by introducing computer coding through games design. Within a fun and supportive environment, children are actively encouraged to explore and make mistakes with coding, helping them naturally develop their ability to instinctively solve computational problems. An oft-overlooked aspect of coding is how much of a creative outlet it can be for kids, enabling them to express their own thoughts and ideas. When children learn to code by trying out their own ideas, they start to think of themselves as creators and not just consumers of technology. If you have a child who loves playing computer games, then learning to create their own games by attending Spark4Kids’ holiday coding camps this summer might just be their ultimate holiday activity. For more information, visit www.spark4kids.com.

Brighton Through the Looking Glass
Take the family for a day out in Brighton this summer. With so much to see, it’s hard to know where to start, so why not see it all from British Airways i360? As the glass viewing pod glides up slowly to 450ft, make new memories together as you point out landmarks across the city, the South Downs and the beautiful Sussex coastline. Join the discovery trail and hunt for the wind farm on the horizon, artwork on the nearby rooftops or domes nestled among the city rooftops. Alternatively, just stand quietly together and take it all in. However you spend your time on the pod, raise a glass of delicious local juice at the Nyetimber Sky Bar before gliding gently down again relaxed, refreshed and with a whole new perspective on the city. This summer holidays you can also enjoy giant games on the boarding deck, the building blocks corner and a kids’ art exhibition. Save up to 20% with Combi Saver tickets for British Airways i360, SEA LIFE Brighton and the Royal Pavilion, to use within one week. Kids can also go half price at Drusillas. Walk on air and walk on the wild side. Pick up a voucher from the BA i360 ticket office to benefit from this offer. For more information and to book, please visit www.BritishAirwaysi360.com.

St Matthew ‘Debate Mate’
St Matthew Academy secondary ‘Debate Mate’ students recently took part in the grand final of the ‘Debate Mate Cup’. ‘Debate Mate’ is a unique, international educational charity dedicated to improving students’ confidence, collaboration and speaking and listening skills through peer-topeer debate mentoring. The students involved in the final had already been through a series of rigorous stages of the competition. They also take part in the after school debating club, which is facilitated by the English Department and students from the best universities across the UK. The aim of the scheme is to give young people the skills they need to become exceptional young leaders, both in school and in their future lives. On the night of the event, the Team A debaters got down to the very last round, the Grand Final! Their place in the competition had been fought out in previous rounds and unfortunately they lost out on the overall cup by just 6 points. St Matthew Academy therefore came second out of 19 schools from across the country. The B Team followed them closely by coming in third place. What an incredible achievement from both teams and a testament to the hard work and preparation put in, in the lead up to the event. The students were rewarded with certificates and medals and a pizza lunch with the Headteacher. Well done SMA debaters!
Plumstead Manor
Following an inspection from Ofsted in May 2018, Plumstead Manor has been judged to be a ‘Good School’ in all respects. This result is a clear indication of the significant and sustained improvements that have been brought about to the quality of education the school provides. Inspectors found that the school now provides pupils with a good education - students leave well equipped for the next stages of their education or career and for their future lives as responsible citizens. They also commented that as students progress through the school, they gain in self-confidence and self-awareness. They become thoughtful
and reflective and develop a sense of responsibility and engagement with the school and wider community. Significantly improved teaching has secured improved progress, and students through the school make good progress overall. The school’s Head Teacher, Douglas Greig told Primary Times, “We are a thriving and rapidly improved secondary school. Our goal is to provide a world-class education to all our young people based on our core values of success, harmony, excellence and justice. We aim to release the full potential of every young person over their seven year journey with us, during which we commit to supporting each one to go beyond what they ever thought possible, so they go on to change the world for the better.” From September the oversubscribed school will accept both girls and boys into its fully inclusive, vibrant and diverse community and will host a series of open events and mornings.
InterHigh Juniors
Many parents would welcome an alternative to those stressful mornings – the school run, packed lunches, traffic jams, school uniform, misplaced books and the constant battle against the clock. Having successfully arrived at the school gates, there are still friendship issues, money for school trips, playground mishaps and large classes to contend with. Thousands of parents have already chosen a school that provides an instant solution. After 13 years of running a successful independent online secondary school, InterHigh School is now launching its primary school division - InterHigh Juniors. InterHigh Juniors will offer the same quality, flexibility, accessibility and positivity in school as InterHigh, but it will provide a full primary school education. Interhigh Juniors will open Year 5 and Year 6 classes in September. Children from as young as eight will now be able to go to school online and benefit from the rich and engaging experience of the school’s powerful learning platform.

Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley
The past year has been significant for Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley. As well as being judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted across all areas they also received their best ever set of results at both GCSE and A Level. These results ranked Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley as the top school
interhigh.co.uk
in Bromley borough and within the top 1% of schools nationally for pupil progress. In 2017 Ofsted said, “Uncompromising ambition for the school is balanced by an ever-present concern for the well-being of pupils and staff. Pupils are enthused and excited to excel.” With specialisms in science and enterprise, Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley encourage girls to break down traditional boundaries by promoting careers within Science, Technology, Economics and Maths. However, the academy is about far more than the results they achieve. Their aim is to send inquisitive, confident and compassionate young women out into the world. The motto of ‘All Can: We Will’ represents a belief that with high quality dedicated teaching and support, coupled with academic and cultural enhancement curriculum, girls will mature as responsible individuals who can and will succeed in their chosen paths. To find out more, join Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley for their Open Sessions this September.
Education News
Qualified and experienced primary teachers will focus on developing young learners who are inquisitive, vivacious and enterprising. The InterHigh group of schools enables its pupils to develop a love of learning, not only for academic foundations but to equip them with skills for a world of exponential change. Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 15 pupils in any class. This ensures that each pupil receives the vital teacher attention and promotes personalised learning where every child can learn and achieve at their own pace. Lessons are every week day morning of term time and every lesson is recorded. This means pupils, and parents, can revisit the lesson at any time. To keep your child stimulated this summer, you can also join InterHigh Juniors summer school. For more information about InterHigh, please visit www.interhigh.co.uk.

Why Summer School?
At the Leaders are Readers summer school, teaching Maths and English for two hours a day allows for intense focus on these subjects. This can be a big help when learning challenging topics which might have been tough to handle with many other subjects competing for lesson and homework time. 11+, 8+, 7+, 5+ and 4+ entrance exam preparation is strategically covered in the programmes and children starting reception in September are taught to read and write ahead of their peers. This accelerates reading progress for any young child beginning to read or for an older child with reading difficulties. For reception and years 1-6, all the foundational topics in a year’s curriculum are selected and taught thoroughly over three weeks. The experience of success during summer school can provide a long-term boost to children’s confidence and self-esteem. It has been argued that the UK needs an educational system that is competitive globally and embodies higher academic standards. This is an additional opportunity for children to access a curriculum that delivers high academic standards. Summer school is fun yet educational and available for any child from age three and a half to thirteen for four hours a day. Extended care is also available. For more information and to enroll your child, please visit www.leadersarereaders.co.uk or call 01992 651 300.
Seize the Summer with Explore Learning.
Research shows that two thirds of children fall behind in their studies over the summer. Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning, shared her ideas with Primary Times on how you can help your child seize the summer:
Start a blog Give your child a note book to jot ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Referencing pictures is a great tool to help encourage children to describe what is happening and get their creativity flowing. Send a postcard Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to. Postcards are only short so are a wonderful way to get your child writing during the holidays. Read, read and read some more Pop a book in your bag so you can use this when travelling on days out. Explore Learn will be uploading weekly activities that you can complete with your child to help keep them engaged with what they are reading.Visit www. explorelearning.co.uk/summer to find out more and download your first activity. Tuition To keep your children progressing over the summer, a tuition centre is a great option. Avoid the battle ground of getting children to do work at home and take them along to a centre where there are lots of other children getting involved. Explore Learning offers free taster sessions, so get in touch today by calling 03301 243 802. Explore Learning is offering a saving of £50 to the first 65 members who join between 11 July and 11 August.Visit www.explorelearning. co.uk/offer. Terms and conditions apply.

Fantastic Results at Babington House
Bromley’s best-performing secondary schools, based on Attainment 8 scores at GCSE, have been revealed by the Government. The DfE has published the latest list of results from pupils in Key Stage 4 from 2017. Schools obtained an average score based on how well pupils performed in up to eight qualifications. These include English, mathematics, three English Baccalaureate qualifications – such as science, computer science, history, geography, and languages – and three other additionally approved qualifications. Bromley schools achieved above the Attainment 8 national average, for both state-funded schools in England (46.3) and all schools in the country (44.6), with a score of 49.8. Babington House School ranked 8th in Bromley with a score of 52.8. If you are not entirely happy with your daughter’s Secondary School offer for September 2018 entry, Babington has a few places remaining and it is not too late to apply. Tim Lello, Babington’s Headmaster, told Primary Times, “Our commitment to providing an academic and well-rounded education with small class sizes and an individual approach means we achieve the very best from all our pupils. This is reflected in the impressive results achieved at GCSE and A Level.” Do go along and talk to them. Call 020 8467 5537 to make an appointment.
