Innovation Celebrated at Bromley High

This summer, a cohort of Year 6 pupils from Bromley High School completed the John Lewis Innovation challenge - the brief was to design a community hub for the benefit of John Lewis and the community. The teams undertook the challenge during Year 6 Enterprise Week, an annual initiative to help the girls develop their enterprise skills. They also devoted 10 hours of curriculum time to the challenge. Dr Garcia, a Bromley parent and lecturer at the London School of Economics, enlightened the girls about the process of team-building - Form, Storm, Norm and Perform and the different roles within a team to ensure success. Each team submitted their competition entry, a mix of film, artwork and the written word. The school submitted eleven entries to the national competition for 9-11 year olds. Six of these made it to the final shortlist and the school took 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th places. Second place was taken by Howell’s School, securing a clean sweep for the GDST. The winning team’s design provided local start-up businesses with the opportunity to showcase and sell their products with the possibility of running workshops alongside. Amelia Rand, Grace Wu, Olivia Hillman and Zara Aslam won a tablet each and a 3D printer for the school. In total, the school’s shortlisted entries won a total of £900 of John Lewis vouchers. Find out more about Bromley High and GDST at www.bromleyhigh. gdst.net and www.gdst.net.

Many working parents are walking a tightrope: caring for a growing family whilst earning a living. It’s the work-life balancing act. Most of the time you cope, but occasionally things go wrong. What safety nets does the law provide in these situations? For emergencies, there is the right to unpaid leave to deal with the immediate problem. But this is no answer to the on-going demands of domestic life. To help with these, there are a number of well-known rights to longer term leave. However, these too are not a complete solution to the problems of a parent needing to work whilst looking after children. One option is the right to flexible working. This applies to all employees with more than 6 months’ service and enables you to request a change in hours or working arrangements to accommodate your childcare requirements.Your employer has 3 months to respond to the request, although a considerate employer may do so more quickly. They must act reasonably in weighing up the pros and cons and they can only refuse the request on certain grounds. There are also a number of less well-defined rights which may assist working parents in some situations. Parents and carers of a disabled child have the right to reasonable adjustments to their working arrangements to assist them with the extra demands that this entails. There is also the overriding requirement on an employer to maintain the relationship of trust and confidence in the working relationship which could be of assistance in some situations. In most cases, the solution has to come from you. Being well informed and well prepared to put your proposals to your employer is key. Taking timely legal advice from experienced employment lawyers can help. Contact Grant Saw via the contact details below to find out more.

Supplementary Education: What’s all the Fuss?

Education News Try Kumon’s Two-Week Free Trial

With nearly 60 years of experience, the Kumon programmes enable children to take on new challenges with confidence and to develop their study skills. Kumon believe this opportunity to grow on both an academic and a personal level should be available to all children. This is why, between 1 October and 20 November, they are offering a two-week free trial (terms and conditions apply) at participating centres across the UK. Your child can experience how the Kumon Maths and English Programmes help children of any age and ability to become confident, independent learners with a positive attitude to study. They’ll also be assessed so your Kumon Instructor can tailor the level of study precisely to their ability. This creates a positive learning experience, with work set at just the right level. Enrol your child on the two-week free trial to get a glimpse of how Kumon could help develop their abilities for the future. For more information, and to find your local participating centre, call 0800 988 6575 or visit the Kumon website – www. kumon.co.uk.

Saturday schools and supplementary tuition are providing a bridge for many parents and pupils to make possible their academic goals that are beyond existing mainstream provision. Parents are investing in supplementary education to plug learning gaps, even out inequalities in standards of teaching and resources from one school to another, prepare their children for entrance exams to selective schools and target their child’s specific needs and ‘problem’ areas.

Back to School with Tutor Doctor After the long summer holidays, it’s now the start of a new academic year, full of promise. At Tutor Doctor, in both Bromley and Bexley, they have found that sadly many students will have forgotten much of what they learned in their last term at school. This problem is often called ‘Summer Learning Loss’. Teachers bemoan this effect as students can sometimes be up to two months or more behind some of their classmates. All is not lost. Grades and Statistics

Obviously it’s a good idea to visit all the schools you’re thinking of sending your child to. Pay special attention to the environment – you know your child better than anyone so you know best what working atmosphere is most effective for them. Chat to students as well as teachers. It’s good to know that the people teaching want to be there, but if you want a more honest perception of the school you’re more likely to get it from the students. One of the most important things to look for is whether they’re happy – a happy child inevitably means a better education.

The end of the summer holidays marks the beginning of the latest adventure in your child’s life – choosing a secondary school. This task doesn’t have to be a chore however. You and your child can work together to find the perfect place for them to learn, explore and grow. Here is a list of Primary Times’ top ten tips for choosing a school. 1.

Make a List

Even if you think you know which school you want to send your child to, it’s important to visit a few just in case, even if it’s just to reaffirm your original choice. Even the best schools can suit some children more than others. Once you have a list of schools in your area, check to make sure each one is logistically possible – does your child meet the entry requirements? Will they be able to travel there easily?

Making the Step: Primary to Secondary School

At the moment your child is the oldest in the school, but from next September they will suddenly seem so small again. Making that move from primary to secondary school can feel like a giant leap. Education expert and teacher, Dr Stephen Curran, has some helpful tips for parents to get their child through this challenging change.

Be understanding Listen to your child’s apprehensions and help reassure them. If you child has an older sibling or cousin, get them to have a quick chat about what to expect from secondary school. Hearing about the many interesting and exciting aspects of school life will give your child a positive outlook.

Join teams and clubs Encourage your child to take part in the school’s extracurricular activities. Joining school clubs can help build friendships and confidence.

Organisation is key To relieve the stress of the school-run get everything together the night before – materials, books, uniform. Set times for homework to create a structured day and help your child keep up at school. Building a sense of routine at school and home will make your child’s transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible. 16

4 Sept - 8 Oct ‘17

With all the statistics floating around about schools, it’s hard to know which to trust. Ultimately these reports aren’t everything, especially as their conclusions are usually based on a few days in a school, but they are all still worth looking at. There is a great resource on the government’s performance information website (head to www.gov.co.uk) which gives a detailed and clear analysis of schools in your area. Of course it’s important to look at the grades the school has been achieving, remember to look at the overall statistics as opposed to just the ones from recent history. Final exam results may depend more on the calibre of the original than anything else but tables which purport to show ‘added value’ also have their drawbacks. Each school year can fluctuate significantly depending on the mix of students, so just because results have gone up/down in the last couple of years, it doesn’t mean the overall standard of teaching has. Look at the general pattern of results and compare these to others in the area.

5.

Word of Mouth

Chat to other parents and locals about the different schools. They may know things (both good and bad) which the schools themselves may not have mentioned. It’s always good to hear from other parents what they wish they had/hadn’t done in hindsight and which questions they wish they’d asked.

6.

Extra-curricular Activities

Not all learning takes place in the classroom, and it’s often in after school clubs that your child discovers something they are passionate for and may even want to pursue as a career. Extracurricular clubs also open your child up to new friendship groups as well as potentially being beneficial to their mainstream education.

7. Discipline

We all respond to discipline in different ways. Some thrive under supervision and strict rules whereas others find this limiting and hard to work under. Make sure to find out what disciplinary structures are in place at each school and determine which would work most effectively with your child.

8.

Equal Opportunities

9.

Where are their friends going?

10.

Where will your child be happiest?

If your child needs SEN support or struggles in a certain area, what structures are in place to aid them and to make sure they don’t fall behind? Although this shouldn’t dramatically affect your choice, it is worth taking into consideration. If your child finds making friends difficult then you don’t want to make moving schools harder with the added aspect of socialising. However this could also be a good opportunity for your child to boost their social skills, so it’s worth chatting it through to decide what is best. When going to open days or evenings make sure to note your child’s initial reaction and how this changes over the course of the event. Ultimately if your child is happy then that’s the best outcome, and hopefully that will be reflected in their results as well. Above all remember not to worry – despite what the media may say, the standard of our secondary schools is still very high and in many cases getting higher. You are simply picking the best environment to unlock your child’s potential.

Colfe’s School Raises Money for Diabetes UK

Open morning: whole school

Colfe’s Junior School pupils and their families came out in force this summer to help raise money for Diabetes UK at their annual school fair. Children from Years 3-6 were tasked with creating entertaining and money-spinning stalls for the event and they did not disappoint. From photo booths to hairstyle fashioning, darts matches and penalty shoot-outs and a visit from a very special clown, the afternoon was awash with fun.

Saturday 23 September 9am - 12 noon Please book via the Admissions page at www.colfes.com

The combined efforts of the school resulted in £800 raised for charity which was then matched by the school’s governing body, the Leathersellers’ City Livery Company, bringing the grand total to over £1600. Head of the Junior School Catriona Macleod told Primary Times, “I’m very proud of our pupils for finding such fun and imaginative ways to support a worthy charity. The match funding from the Leathersellers’ was the icing on the cake. A fantastic day was had by all.” Colfe’s School open morning is on 23 September. Visit www.colfes.com to book.

St Columba’s Boys School

Nigel Fisher, Head Teacher of St Columba’s told Primary Times, “St Columba’s welcomes boys of all academic and religious backgrounds. As a Catholic Comprehensive Academy, we are a welcoming, vibrant and happy community dedicated to faith, learning and achievement. We have a tradition of high standards and high expectations. As a caring Christian community we work in partnership with parents and parishes to enable students to achieve their very best. Gospel values inform all aspects of community life and learning and in our community everyone has the right to be happy, be safe and achieve. We have high standards of behaviour which was confirmed when Ofsted visited us in September 2014 and said that we are a ‘Good School’ and that the behaviour and safety of students was ‘Outstanding’. Ofsted confirmed their findings in October 2016 and described the school as ‘harmonious’ with positive relationships between staff and students.

All students are set by ability from day one so that each individual is challenged to achieve their best. To support successful transition to secondary school Year 7 students have their own dining room and playground. As a comprehensive school, every child really does matter and we help each individual to grow spiritually, academically and socially. We are proud to be a small school where every child is known, recognised and valued as an individual.”

Bromley High Celebrate

Almost half of all A level grades at Bromley High were A*/A with 38% of girls achieving 3 or more A*/A grades. Top A* grades increased by a third this year, 77% of grades were A*-B and A*-C grades rose to 96%, particularly impressive given the predictions of volatility in results from the new Linear A levels. Notably, those subjects where students scored 100% A*-A grades, like Dance, Music, Further Mathematics, Spanish and Physical Education, reflect the way in which maintaining a broad A level curriculum allows students to choose subjects which they enjoy and where they know they can excel. An outstanding 94% of this year’s applicants were accepted by their preferred universities. Angela Drew, Headmistress at Bromley High School, told Primary Times, “We are thrilled to see that these excellent results have enabled so many girls to achieve their first choice of university”.

Blackheath High are reaching a significant milestone in the school’s multi-million pound redevelopment which is due to be completed in 2018. Cheryl Giovannoni, CEO of the Girls’ Day School

Trust (GDST), will be speaking at the traditional ‘Topping Out’ ceremony to be held at the school on 3 October. ‘Topping Out’ is the contractors’ celebration of the installation of the final piece of structure or the completion of the roof on a large project and marks a significant point in the construction of any building. The re-development of Blackheath High Senior School is a major investment by the GDST in order to create fabulous surroundings for students to reach their full potential. Phase one of the project already transformed the historic Westcombe House into a new Sixth Form Centre designed to inspire a mature, pre-university atmosphere and a light, contemporary study environment. The next phase comprises the construction of a new Art/DT/Music wing, a new three storey main entrance building, a new exhibition space, a library that will be sunk into a new lower ground floor, a courtyard providing additional social space, additional sports storage, new changing facilities, a fitness suite and an enlarged dining area. Contractors have provided many opportunities for students to engage with the project, not least through site tours and talks on careers in the construction industry. The school is remaining fully operational throughout the build which is being expertly managed to minimise disruption to students and local residents. For a sneak preview of what is to come, the school would like to welcome you to Blackheath High during one of their autumn open events on 14 October and 8 and 15 November.

The Duke of York’s Royal Military School upholds its traditions with pride and offers students aged 11 to 18 a unique and iconic place to study for GCSEs and A Levels. Set in 150 acres of countryside near Dover, full and weekly boarding is available with students gaining a quality education at an affordable price. In addition to a wide academic choice, Dukies enjoy a full and active school life which includes camping at the Brecon Beacons for Gold Duke of Edinburgh, an excellent range of sports, music, dance and drama and representing their school at special parades. Children don’t have to come from a military family to study at the school and there is no expectation for them to go into the forces when they leave. More than 80% of Sixth Form students go on to University to study a variety of subjects. The school’s next open morning is on Saturday October 7. Please call 01304 245 073 to book or visit www.doyrms.com for more details. General James Bashall CBE was guest of honour and Reviewing Officer at the annual Grand Day celebrations when students paraded in full ceremonial uniform for the Trooping of the Colour ceremony led by the school’s impressive military band. Prior to Grand Day, 30 students played a central part at a special service honouring the roles of Sir Winston Churchill and General Charles de Gaulle in WWII. They provided a guard of honour and corps of drums for the unveiling of two statues in Park Richelieu, Calais, following a request to attend by British Embassy officials in Paris. The Rt Hon. Sir Nicholas Soames MP PC, Sir Winston’s grandson, inspected the school’s guard of honour. He also spoke with great warmth about the school, having visited in 2009 to act as Inspecting Officer for the drill competition parade and to present the Baroness Thatcher Sword of Honour.

Harris Academy Beckenham

Babington House - Excellent Education

‘The school’s culture of aspiration and ambition is clearly demonstrated in classes. Teachers are aspirational for their pupils and set high expectations for them. Pupils respond positively. They are determined to do their best and are confident about meeting ambitious targets set by their teachers.’ (OFSTED 2017) It is our ethos of Aspire Discover Achieve that was recognised and praised in our recent inspection, and which contributed to Harris Academy Beckenham being judged as ‘outstanding’ in every category. In addition, the outstanding progress made by our students, placing us as the most successful school in Bromley (Progress 8 2016), vastly impressed the inspectors. Our ethos at Harris Academy Beckenham aims to create outstanding scientific learners, as we train our students in resilience, reflectiveness, resourcefulness and reciprocity. These crucial skills underpin an enterprising attitude to learning and have already had significant impact on our students’ progress. In order to equip our students with the skills required to be confident and eloquent writers, readers and speakers, our innovative WORD programme is placed at the heart of our curriculum. Our focus on raising aspirations at every level has contributed to this excellent performance, and we intend to sustain and improve these results further year on year. We look forward to welcoming you to our open evening on Tuesday 3 October to be able to share with you further details of our Academy, our successes and the enriching and rewarding learning opportunities we can offer your son or daughter at Harris Academy Beckenham.

Rebecca Hickey Principal

At Babington House “pupils throughout the school display excellent attitudes to learning that are evident in all that they do, and an atmosphere of happy endeavour permeates school life”, independent school inspectors found. The school received the highest grade possible in all categories and across every age group in its recent Educational Quality and Compliance Inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). Under the new more robust Inspection Framework, this is described as ‘Excellent’ and is very rare indeed. Babington could not have done better. Babington House School is an independent day school for pupils aged 3 to 18 years situated in a beautiful group of buildings on Grange Drive in Chislehurst, near Bromley. The school is co-educational up to 11 years old, a girls only from 11 to 16 and has a mixed Sixth Form. Infant Outdoor Learning Environment

Bishop Challoner School recently completed a new infant playground. It has been created in a safe, fenced area and contains various play equipment and educational games, all specifically designed for the younger pupils at Bishop Challoner School to foster and enhance their learning. The playground maximises opportunities for the children to interact, explore, enrich, build and to learn from their peers. They learn to negotiate, compromise, work together and also to control themselves and tolerate and respect each other. The tractor and castle promote role play and social play, providing children with places to congregate and communicate. The introduction of a canopy affords the opportunity to integrate the outdoors with the indoor classroom with one sense of place and identity. This enables children to move freely back and forth between the inside and outside encouraging them to experiment with autonomy and independence. Bishop Challoner’s 4+ Assessment Day will be held on Saturday 13 January. For more details contact the school at admissions@bishopchallonerschool.com.

Flexi-Boarding at Farringtons

Farringtons School is in a unique position within its location in that it has a thriving boarding community as well as day pupils. In addition to full and weekly boarding, Farringtons is able to offer flexi-boarding to help with the busy lifestyles that many families have. If parents need to be away for business or pleasure or find themselves with urgent family commitments, pupils can board and enjoy the clubs and activities available to all boarders. Flexi-Boarding is popular with students who have a long journey to school and want to attend before or after school clubs. It is also the perfect solution for pupils who want to prioritise studying around the exam periods or prepare prior to moving away to university. Families can opt for an occasional sleepover at school or choose to board on a regular basis of two or three nights a week. Set in twenty five acres of beautiful parkland in Chislehurst, Farringtons has excellent facilities and offers a wide range of sports and extra-curricular activities. Full, weekly or flex-boarding is available to pupils at Farringtons in Years 7–13. For further information, please visit www.farringtons.kent. sch.uk.

A Haberdashers education represents an ‘outstanding’ start with a wealth of advantages and opportunities that leads to over 80% of pupils attending university including the Russell Group. Pupils develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem through their involvement in the school’s academic and extra- curricular enrichment, adding value to their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. HAKA enables pupils to achieve success by focusing on high-quality teaching, providing an engaging and stretching curriculum and focusing on each child as an individual to draw out their strengths and talents. HAKA is a school that is built on an ethos of tradition and innovation, respect and responsibility, collaboration and inclusion. It is these moral values that are instilled in pupils which enable them to both contribute and gain from school community and the communities in which they live. Choosing your New School

Dear Prospective Beths student, Before I begin I want to wish you the very best in your up and coming 11-Plus and hope that your performance is reflective of the hard work that you have put into it. Moving to a new school is one of the hardest decisions to make because everything changes. We at Beths understand that and believe you will quickly be able to make that important transition from your primary school into the secondary phase under our care, guidance and attention to your individual needs. Our selective school is an exciting, purposeful, vibrant and thriving community that challenges and supports you in fulfilling your academic potential whilst allowing you to smile and feel a degree of control over proceedings. Our development of the ‘whole student’ is a belief that we at Beths completely buy into. We are a selective school in name but we are so much more in what we are able to offer our students. Our primary focus is on academic achievement and our goal is to create a generation of leaders and develop well-rounded individuals who can perform at the height of their ambition. We aim to create young adults who are forward thinking, confident, motivated, competitive and highly successful, who understand the purpose of becoming an independent learner and strive to become self-directed and comfortable with the unknown. Beths is renowned for its strength in Mathematics, Technology and the Sciences. Our specialist facilities will give you a rich experience in purpose built laboratories where you can explore the depths of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, in high-spec workshops where you can practically engage in Electronics, Food, Graphics and Product Design and in state-of-the-art Computer rooms where you can create programs and learn to code. As part of our Languages Specialism, the school offers you the choice to learn French, Mandarin Chinese or Spanish from Year 7 with the opportunity to choose a second Foreign Language from Year 8 which additionally includes German, Italian and Latin. Sport has always played an important part in the life of Beths students, both on an individual and team basis. You will have numerous opportunities to gain new sporting experiences both within and outside the curriculum. We have seen our students become area, county and national champions in their chosen sports – we are currently national champions in two team sports - and we have a number of individuals who are currently attending prestigious footballing, rugby and cricketing academies. The dedication of both students and staff is a testament to the on-going success that Beths continues to experience. With such opportunities at your disposal and a picturesque setting, Beths has so much to offer you. We believe there is truly something for everyone here. I do very much look forward to meeting you soon and welcoming you into the school. Kind regards

Choosing your New School

Choosing a school for your child can be one of the most difficult decisions you have to make. What school will be the right fit in terms of offering them the right academic, cultural and sporting education? Where will they receive the best teaching, learning and care to grow socially and feel happy? These are questions that parents ask themselves as they embark on finding a school for their child. Eltham College, a leading independent day school in Mottingham, offers boys from 7+ (Year 3) a powerful blend of a strong academic curriculum and a lively, varied co-curriculum. Alongside this they help students grow into confident, well-rounded boys who are ready to learn, explore their world, and care for the people around them. The boys at Eltham College become increasingly independent learners as they move through the school and by Year 6 understand the value of hard work, perseverance, adaptability and co-operation and will be ready for Senior School. One of the unique aspects about Eltham College is the seamless transition from Junior to Senior School. At the end of Year 6 boys in the Junior School move smoothly into Eltham College’s Senior School. There are no entrance exams to take because by this stage the College has known each child for some time and they are confident that they will thrive in the Senior School. All through the Junior School each individual child’s progress is carefully monitored. Any concerns are discussed with the parents and any additional support that is needed to learn well is offered so that they are ready for the Senior School. Without the pressure of needing to cram for entrance exams, Year 6 is an exciting time for the boys as they take part in a specially designed transition programme of academic, sporting and cultural activities that helps prepare them for every aspect of Senior School life.

An Interview with Lauren Child Primary Times have been talking to Lauren Child, the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate. A writer and illustrator, she is best known for the Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort series. She has received numerous awards and was given an MBE in 2010 for her services to literature. Her latest book in the Charlie and Lola series, ‘A Dog With Nice Ears’, is due to be released on 28 September.

nine years old, and as soon as I finished it, I read it all over again. Another is Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking. I loved her because she was a child like no other. She was a girl and she was funny and there weren’t enough books about funny girls in those days. She’s very courageous and doesn’t really care what people think about her in the best possible way. She doesn’t worry about what she’s wearing and doing and she is able to be herself.

How does it feel to be the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate?

When you were growing up did you feel you could be yourself like Pippi Longstocking?

It is a great honour but it’s also a great responsibility. It feels slightly unreal too, partly because my career began almost 20 years ago, exactly the time Quentin Blake was the first Children’s Laureate. Quentin was a huge influence on my becoming an illustrator. I loved his illustrations really before I knew who he was as a person. There was the Grimble and the illustrations from Betsy Byers 18th Emergency, my favourite book as a child. And I remember watching him on television back in the days when the BBC had a programme called Jackanory. It was so wonderful to see live drawing as the story was told, and in fact Quentin Blake was the first illustrator I realised was an actual real person. It was so different in those days. You didn’t have the same chance to meet authors and illustrators as you do now.

What do you plan to do as Laureate?

I’m interested in championing children’s creativity and I want to encourage children to spend a little of their time looking, listening and making things because they’re driven to create. I’ll be starting a blog soon called ‘Staring Into Space’ where I’m going to hopefully help inspire that. I also want to champion reading and drawing for pleasure and to elevate children’s book illustration to the level of other art forms. I think illustration is seen as something less than fine art, and writing for children as slightly less than writing for adults. I think we can be a little bit patronising about it. That’s a shame, because we know that literature is life-changing for children and the first art we really get up close to is in books. That’s where we begin with reading and storytelling. We do children a disservice if we can’t see and celebrate its power. I also want to talk about diversity, as inclusivity is really important to me. There aren’t enough books written by and about people of all kinds of backgrounds and culture. It’s important because if as a child you don’t see yourself on the front cover of a book then how do you feel part of society?

Which books, authors and illustrators are your main inspirations? I have so many. When I was a child I loved The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I remember reading it when I was about

No. I was terrible at being myself. I was very self conscious and worried about what people were thinking - am I wearing the right thing, am I saying the right thing? All of my characters in my books now are at least moving in the direction of being themselves.

How important do you think it is for children to daydream and stare out of the window?

I think it’s vital. You can’t come up with anything without a certain amount of boredom, because boredom is the beginning of invention. Solving problems and letting your mind wander and find the edges of something. It’s how you get to an inspired place and become creative. When I get really stuck in my own work now, I go out and look around at things. I go to the cinema, an art gallery, I put on the radio, I tune into people’s conversations. You hear these amazing things. And when I hear or see something interesting I write it down. You end up with notebooks full of interesting things.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing a chapter book for younger readers, for around six to nine-year-olds. It’s very, very illustrated because I missed drawing so much when I was writing my Ruby Redfort series. So - lots of drawings. My new Charlie and Lola book A Dog With Nice Ears is coming out in the Autumn. It was inspired by looking at all the dogs in the park near our home with my daughter and imagining what kind of dog we would like to have.

Do you have any advice for children that are starting to write?

My advice would be to write what you enjoy. You need to write about something that interests you. It might be something funny that you see out of the window or something that you’ve imagined or about your family. You’ve got to enjoy what you’re writing or you won’t be able to carry on.You’ve got to let things develop, listen, and watch how people talk and interact. Dig deep into your own memory and try and tap into how things feel.

Monkey Music will be opening in Eltham, Lee and Woolwich Riverside from 11 September. Monkey Music nurtures a child’s natural love of music so that it will last a lifetime. Sessions are small and tailor-made, and the teachers make full use of the lively 30 minute classes to captivate the children using a winning combination of catchy music, percussion, visual props and boundless energy with lots of opportunities for the children to make music of their own. There are classes for every age group. Rock’n’Roll (from 3 months) is designed specifically for Mums, Dads and very young babies to share together. During each session participants are engaged through gentle songs, fascinating sounds and absorbing activities. HeighHo (from 12 months) is aimed at young toddlers who love being up on their feet. Lots of dancing and moving encourages the children to explore the space around them and express the music they hear. Jiggety-Jig (2 and 3 years) makes sure that the children develop their sense of rhythm whilst playing in time to Monkey Music songs and games. Hoops, parachute games and circle dances are always popular activities. DingDong (3 and 4 years) teaches children what music means when they see it written down. For more information visit www.monkeymusic.co.uk or contact Kerry Hill on 020 3865 8524 or at eltham@ monkeymusic.co.uk. Classes are also available in Blackheath and Greenwich, Bromley and Chislehurst, Bexleyheath and Dartford.

All the competition students have grown so much in the past two years, not only in their performance skills, technique and stamina but also their pure love of dance which just radiates from them all. BSOD is not just a dance school, it is a family which many students stay with from 4-5 years old to 18. Strong friendships are made, lessons are learned and a lot of fun is had along the way. At BSOD, staff believe that dance not only is a fabulous way to keep fit, learn how to use your body and express yourself, it is also an amazing way to learn so many life skills. You can find BSOD on Facebook @BlackheathSchoolofDance.

Kerry On Dancing

Why should you choose ballroom and Latin American dance as a hobby? Dance is well documented to be a great form of exercise. It develops coordination, flexibility, focus, fitness, musicality, strength, stamina and self-confidence. Ballroom also offers that little bit more than other dance genres. It involves working closely with another person, promoting team work, communication and negotiation skills, often leading to strong friendships being built. In addition there are 10 different rhythms and dances to be mastered!

Blackheath School of Dance

The under 10s modern group at Blackheath School of Dance took part in their first round of competitions this year and made it all the way to the finals of All England’s Dance Festival. When Blackheath School of Dance opened in September 2015, students and staff always dreamed of joining the amazing schools that already compete at an outstanding level at regional competitions. With five groups in ballet, tap and modern, and two solo performers making it through to regionals in May, it was definitely a great year for the dance school. But with the under 10s modern group making it to the final, everyone at BSOD was euphoric. 36

All the Arts

Award winning theatre school All the Arts are developing and expanding their hugely popular performing arts classes from September. They are delighted to now offer local youngsters ages 3-18 years the opportunity to develop their Musical Theatre and Singing skills at St Mary’s Hall in Bexley Village. Ex-Brookside and West End performer Lucy Morgans, who will be teaching the classes told Primary Times, “For over 15 years we have enjoyed a wonderful 100% pass rate in all dance and drama exams and we now would like to offer exams, festivals and performances that focus on singing and musical theatre. We feel that there are a lack of singing opportunities locally and this is usually the performing arts discipline that gets overlooked. We are very excited about launching these ‘Glee Style’ classes at our Bexley Centre on Wednesday 20 September and encourage all budding pop stars and musical theatre enthusiasts to come along. The classes will cover solo and group singing, microphone technique and confidence building within the genres of pop and musical theatre. Pupils will also have the chance to take solo LAMDA drama exams” All the Arts currently have four pupils performing in West End productions and many more in TV commercials and film projects. For more information on how you can get involved with this cutting edge theatre school visit www.allthearts.co.uk.

Maurice has a group of friends - Junior the fish, Miguel the gorilla, Gilbert the grumpy tarsier, Batricia the bat, Fred the warthog and Al and Bob, both toads, who together make The Jungle Bunch. Maurice and his friends intend to maintain order and justice in the jungle as Maurice’s mother did before him. Hello Pet Patters! I’ve been sent some interesting questions - so here goes!! And the first one asks, is it OK to have a dog and a cat in the same household? Fair enough, and certainly you would normally think that dogs chase cats - so no! But in fact, the chasing is triggered more by the dog’s natural instincts to chase its food - like rabbits or rats etc. And cats being more solitary (ask teacher!) creatures, will try to run away from any other larger animal they see, thus encouraging a dog to chase them! But, dogs learn things - they listen to, and then obey their “bosses” - you! Ideally you would have a puppy and a kitten, babies, and they will both then look to you as their guide and ‘boss’. Praising the puppy (or young dog) when it learns to sit, and let you present the kitten in your arms for it to sniff, and then giving a reward (small treat) will teach it very quickly that sniffing is OK. But ... any leaping forward, barking or trying to chase must be given a sharp “NO!”, and no treat to eat. Likewise with the kitten, staying calm (stroke it a lot) when the puppy or dog is sniffing, with no hissing or clawing also deserves an immediate treat. After practising this routine several times a day, for a few weeks, it should then be possible for the two to meet without you holding them, but still giving rewards if they behave nicely. And subsequent ‘growing up’ together once their identities have been recognised by each other will ensure a lifelong acceptance, and quite likely a genuine friendship. Neither dogs nor cats know what they are - they are just pre-programmed to behave in certain doggy or pussy ways - BUT these can be modified by teaching, and then their own experiences. So ... Happy training!!

Primary Times Pets Ok - now here’s a thing! Which bird lays the largest egg?? Well, it’s likely to be the largest bird yes? But you might not think of it as a bird when I tell you it’s the ostrich!! You think of birds as flying creatures, but the ostrich is just too heavy to fly, so it’s ‘wings’ have become decorative, and are used more for display when it is looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend. The feathers are also rather ‘fluffy’, with gaps in between, so they wouldn’t be much use as ‘wings’ - but they can make an attractive flutter! However, their eggs are certainly the largest - and are equivalent (teacher!) to about 180 chicken eggs! That would certainly make a HUGE breakfast, eh?!! But I don’t know where you would find a saucepan big enough if you like your eggs boiled!! Yum YUM!

Moving swiftly on ... Can you feed rabbits and guinea pigs the same food? Well, there’s a puzzle worth answering! And immediately I can say NO - don’t! This is because guinea pigs need extra Vitamin C in their diet, whilst rabbits don’t. Rabbits can live on grass and hay, and don’t really need other vegetables. So, it’s OK to give rabbits some guinea pig food, as well as just their hay food, but never the other way around. Guinea pigs must always have their special diet (which includes extra Vitamin C), and not just the simple diet of hay you give rabbits. Guinea pigs need the Vitamin C content of fresh vegetables, dandelion leaves etc, as well as some grass to chew and keep their teeth short. But giving them just rabbit food will quickly make them ill, and then you must take them to your vet! Oh dear!!

Thank you to Clinton Jefferies, the Primary Times Vet, for answering our readers’ questions 44

Normandy is a food lover’s paradise, particularly in autumn, so why not hop across the Channel and visit some of the foodie festivals taking place across the region? From cheese and seafood to the iconic apple, here are five Norman festivals not to be missed this year: Cheese lovers will love the Fête du Fromage in Neufchatel-enBray on 17 and 18 September. Celebrate the oldest of Normandy’s four cheeses as you pick up Neufchatel recipes, go for a tasting or two, buy local products at the market and enjoy entertainment galore. Seafood fans won’t want to miss Granville’s annual seafood festival, Toute la Mer sur un Plateau (The Whole Sea on a Plate), which runs from 30 September until 1 October. The festival boasts markets, pop-up seafood restaurants, cooking demos, free tastings, folk music and entertainment for all the family. Seafood is also the main event at Viller-sur-Mer’s annual Scallop and Seafood Festival, 28-29 October. Enjoy a day at the seaside with a difference, tasting and learning about seafood, in particular the town’s renowned coquilles Saint-Jacques (scallops) from the region’s leading chefs. An hour’s drive inland from the port of Le Havre, Lieurey welcomes 10,000 visitors each year to its popular herring fair; this year on 11 November. Activities include a herring contest, stalls selling herring-themed treats, cooking demonstrations, family rides in a horse-drawn carriage and pony rides for the children. Finally, the village of Le Sap’s annual cider festival celebrates the ancient art of cider making and the traditional practice of using a working horse to power the apple press, demonstrations of which take place at regular times over the two days (11-12 November).
