At the end of November, the volunteers of the Epping Ongar Railway put the finishing touches to the Light Fantastic services week, ahead of a sell-out first weekend. The Light Fantastic service takes passengers from North Weald to Ongar and back aboard a brilliantly decorated train. After boarding, the music starts and the passengers travel to Ongar enjoying a show of music and lights along the way. On arrival at Ongar the train stops for a short while when everyone gets the chance to see the train in all its glory before returning to North Weald. The event builds on the previous years and everyone is set for it to be a sell-out. However, at the time of writing there are some tickets available before Christmas or why not think about taking the family out for an evening service with lights and music after Christmas? The Epping Ongar Light Fantastic runs on selected dates until 9 January 2022. For more information and to get tickets, visit www.eorailway.co.uk/events.

How to See Jacqueline Wilson with the BBC Symphony Orchestra

The Perfect Christmas Gift for the Family

Blackheath Halls’ annual festive offering is returning! Expect Christmas jumpers and tinsel a-plenty with the all-sparkling, all-singing Festive Family Sing-A-Long on Saturday 4 December. Families can join with an on-stage choir in singing along to all the popular festive favourite tunes including Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with a few musical surprises thrown in. Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without The Nutcracker ballet from Let’s All Dance. This will be a shortened, family version showing for four performances on the weekend of 11 and 12 December.

Family Theatre

Family Theatre

There are also more family shows in the New Year that are now available to book. If you’re looking for a theatrical Christmas gift for young children, the magical world of Julia Donaldson will come to life in January with The Smartest Giant in Town. The show is a heartwarming tale about friendship and helping those in need, brought to life in a musical, puppet-filled adventure by Little Angel Theatre. If your family prefers Elves or Mad Hatters to Giants there are plenty of other productions coming to Blackheath Halls next year, so head to www.blackheathhalls.com for more information.

The beloved children’s author, Jacqueline Wilson (plus some very special guests) joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Mei-Ann Chen over October half term for a unique concert at the Barbican. CBBC will bring the concert to audiences watching at home on BBC iPlayer over the Christmas period, presented by Mwaksy from CBBC’s Blue Peter. This unique and special event will also be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4. Jacqueline Wilson books have inspired generations of children for 30 years. Now the renowned writer has joined forces with a full orchestra for a family concert that will carry you into the worlds of some of her favourite characters, the fearless Tracy Beaker, the determined Hetty Feather and many more. Wilson believes anything can tell a story – music included. This multimedia concert was designed to expand the imagination with miraculous music by composers past and present, including wellknown tunes like the iconic circus music Entrance of the Gladiators. You can expect sorcery in Nymphs by Mason Bates, charm in Anna Clyne’s Masquerade and rhythmic drive in Hans Christian Lumbye’s Copenhagen Steam Railway Gallop, not forgetting the iconic theme from CBBC’s The Story of Tracy Beaker – newly reimagined for orchestra!

Recognised as one of the best in the country and following their Best Pantomime Offie Award win in 2019, this year’s Greenwich Theatre pantomime sees the company returning stronger than ever after the astonishing challenges presented throughout the pandemic. Prevented by the lockdown in 2020 from staging their usual seasonal show - a tradition that had been running for over 15 years - Greenwich Theatre are ecstatic to be making their festive comeback with a version of the rarely staged traditional pantomime, The Queen of Hearts, playing from Friday 19 November until Sunday 2 January. Writer, director and dame of all dames Andrew Pollard can’t wait to get “the family” back together this year for another traditional pantomime, jam packed (pardon the pun) with all of the usual audience interaction, theatrical silliness and seasonal magic. Audiences will meet the Knave of Hearts, a bit of a joker who’s in love with the Princess of Diamonds. The only problem is she’s already got a boyfriend – the Prince of Spades. Maybe the Queen’s secret jam recipe will win her over? But then there’s the King of Clubs who’s also desperate to get his hands on the secret recipe… Greenwich Theatre’s The Queen of Hearts will see the fantastic return of their established pantomime writer, director and

extraordinary dame Andrew Pollard, their favourite villain Anthony Spargo, musical director (Uncle) Steve Markwick and brilliant designer Cleo Pettitt, along with some dazzling new faces. James Haddrell, the theatre’s artistic and executive director, told Primary Times, “Having had a long time to think about the best way to return to Panto, we were all agreed in wanting to present something unusual, something very new and at the same time something that has the whole history and heritage of pantomime at its heart.”

Peppa Pig at the Theatre Royal Haymarket

Peppa Pig is excited to be going on a special day out with George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig - it’s going to be her best day ever! Get ready for a road-trip full of fun adventures. Prepare for the brand new Peppa Pig Live show packed full of songs, games and laughter, it really is the best day ever for Peppa Pig fans! Peppa will be at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London’s West End from Thursday 2 December to Sunday 2 January.

David Lakin, IET Head of Education, told Primary Times, “We are delighted to be launching our IET Santa Loves STEM campaign once again. There continues to be a huge shortfall of young people taking up careers in engineering and technology and we believe one of the main barriers to this is not capturing the creative and curious minds of children from a young age.” Hosted on the IET’s education website, children can join Santa and his helpers to make, create, imagine, and discover this Christmas. Activities include fun craft ideas, recipes and hands-on experiments which provide STEM inspired learning through play. For those passionate about climate change, there is a fun experiment for children to help Santa examine how heat passes through animals who need to insulate, as well as information on affordable and recycled STEM toys. Childhood is a key time for developing lifelong skills and abilities. One area that really helps children to learn and develop new skills is social playtime. This can include a wide range of activities from sports to performing arts. It covers anything that requires children to work together to play. Social playtime helps children to learn and develop many skills that will be vital as they become adults and will continue to benefit them throughout their lives. Some of the key ways social playtime helps children develop is by improving social skills, building confidence and developing children’s emotional intelligence. It also encourages teamwork and introduces the concept of friendly competition. At Jigsaw Performing Arts Schools your child can benefit from improving all of these skills through dance, drama and singing. Book your two week trial at www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk to discover if it is the right activity for your child.

The swim school’s founder swam competitively at the highest levels.
