Air Quality Monitoring Backpacks Trial

A sample of Primary school pupils will carry special backpacks with state-of-the-art air quality sensors on their journey to and from school to help monitor the levels of toxic air young Londoners are exposed to, in a new scheme launched by the Mayor, Sadiq Khan. 250 pupils from five London primary schools in Southwark, Richmond, Greenwich, Haringey and Hammersmith and Fulham will take part in the project, wearing specially adapted backpacks to and from school for a week. The children will use the backpacks like a normal bag (the monitor takes up one pocket, leaving plenty of room for school equipment), allowing the monitors to record pollutant levels on each child’s journey to school and throughout the school day. The data from this study will allow King’s scientists to analyse at which point of their journey to school (or which part of their school day) children are exposed to the most pollution. They will also be able to the compare the exposure of children who have similar journeys but take different routes and travel modes and then make recommendations of how children can reduce their exposure in future. The project itself was devised by City Hall and C40 Cities. Once this approach and technology has been proven in London, the goal is to see it introduced in cities around the world. For more information about the trial, please visit www.london.gov.uk. Photo credit: Courtesy of GLA

Win a Visit from The Gruffalo

The National Literacy Trust and Macmillan Children’s Books are running an exciting competition for children aged 5-11 to celebrate The Gruffalo’s 20th birthday. Primary school pupils have the chance to write their very own stories about what happened next to their favourite character from the book, after the Gruffalo flees and Mouse found the nut. There are a range of exciting activities to bring the competition and the magical world of The Gruffalo to life in primary schools throughout the UK. All participating schools will receive a printed poster and colourful bookmarks for pupils, and will be able to download an activity pack complete with fun ideas, a toolkit to transform classrooms into the deep dark wood, and a certificate to celebrate every child who has taken part. The winning pupil will receive a special 20th birthday copy of The Gruffalo signed by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, an incredible hamper filled with Gruffalo goodies, as well as £250 worth of books from Pan Macmillan for their school. Sparrow Soars Upwards

Latest News

Premier Education Camps

Almost half a million people across the UK spent an hour watching the birds that visit their garden or outdoor space as part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch earlier this year, counting more than 7.5 million birds in total. The house sparrow remains at the top of the UK Big Garden Birdwatch rankings with almost 1.2 million sightings throughout the weekend but for many species fewer birds were recorded than in 2018. In Greater London, the top three most common garden visitors, in order, were house sparrow, wood pigeon and starling. House sparrows showed a 3.5% increase across London gardens, keeping them top of the charts for London. UK house sparrow numbers, reported by participants since the Big Garden Birdwatch began, have fallen by 56%, but in recent years, national numbers have slowly started to rise again, giving conservationists hope that at least a partial recovery may be happening. For a full round-up of all the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch results and to see which birds were visiting gardens where you live, visit www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch Photo credit: Ray Kennedy (rspb-images.com)

Strawberry Ripple Ice Cream

As the weather gets warmer (we hope!), what better way to cool yourselves down than a delicious, healthy ice-cream straight from your own kitchen? Mrs Bun the Baker shares her secrets on this healthy sweet treat from her book ‘Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker’. The easy-to-follow, child-friendly cookbook is packed with favourites and tried and tested, approved and munched recipes from the Young Buns who attend the award-winning cookery school. This book gives children an insight into how exciting baking can be and will inspire confidence in adults who have never baked before.

Repeat for all the strawberries. Avoid creating big pieces as they will only end up as lumps of ice in the final ice-cream.

Ingredients – you will need:

container and place this into the freezer. Be patient as you will need to leave it for at least 6 hours before you can eat the ice-cream! If you take it out 10 minutes before you want it, the finished ice-cream will be easier to scoop.

FROM KITCHEN ZERO

TO BAKING HERO!

15 strawberries 225ml double cream: use extra thick cream, if you prefer – you don’t need to whip it! 100ml sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 75ml single cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar: optional

Method

1. Have a 500ml freezer-friendly container at hand 2. Wash the strawberries and remove their stalks. Get a strawberry,

hold it between your thumb and finger, and squish it into a bowl.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

3. Pour the double cream into a jug. Whisk the cream until it’s sticking to the whisk - it should look like ice-cream on top of a cone. Add in the condensed milk, vanilla essence, single cream and the strawberries. 4. Mix the ingredients up for a ripple effect – but don’t over mix or you’ll have pink ice-cream with no swirls! Have a taste. If it’s not sweet enough for you, add in some or all of the icing sugar. 5. Pour the mixture into a 500ml freezer-friendly plastic

Variations

Use other berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries – or use lots of different berries together. Add some fudge pieces and squeeze in some toffee sauce before it goes in the freezer. For chocolate-chip ice-cream, add chunks of your favourite chocolate: plain, milk or white. Or, again, mix them together. Chop and mash a banana for a delicious banana ice-cream. Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net

Kind Kind is a timely and inspiring new picture book with foreword by Axel Scheffler and pictures by 38 international illustrators. It celebrates kindness and humankind as well as the richness and diversity of children’s book illustration. Imagine a world where everyone is kind – how can we make that come true? This book shows readers the many ways you can be kind, from sharing toys and games to helping those from other countries feel welcome. Written by Alison Green and endorsed by Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler, Kind features artwork donated by international illustrators including Sir Quentin Blake, Kitty Crowther, Michael Foreman, Chris Haughton and Lydia Monks. £1 per printed copy will be donated to Three Peas, a charity which provides vital help to refugees from war-torn countries and for which Axel Scheffler is patron. Axel Scheffler told Primary Times, “Whether it’s the small acts of kindness that brighten our daily lives, or the bigger questions of how we help those in real need, we know that a kinder world is a better world.” Kind will be available online and from all good book stores from 4 April for £12.99. When Stafford saw the huge smile on his daughter’s face, he knew he wanted other parents and children to experience the same magical feeling he did when Alyssya first saw a unicorn.

Selective Education Open Day

Grammar Schools: Who Will Get In? is the title of the BBC 2 documentary which featured Townley Grammar School. Concerns about entry to the most successful Grammar Schools, the selective testing and how parents can or should support their children have featured in the national debate in recent years. It can be a confusing and at times a distressing process for many. The Selective Education Open Day is the only event that will bring the real experts together to speak to parents. Representatives from Bexley Admissions, CEM (the test providers) and Townley Grammar School will be on hand to give advice and guidance. You and your daughter will get to see the type of work Year 7 students do and talk to teachers from English, Maths and Science. Townley will give you guidance on how to determine if your daughter will flourish in such an environment and advice on how to prepare for the selective tests. The aims of the day are to share insights into the benefits and challenges of a selective education, to inform parents of indicators of selective ability and thereby assist in the decision making regarding entering for selective tests, and to provide information about effective parental support for pupils of ability. If you aspire to a Grammar School education for your daughter this is an invaluable insight not available anywhere else and places are strictly limited. Due to demand this event is only open to girls in Year 5. For more information on how to apply for the event, please visit www.townleygrammar.org.uk.

for a 5-day Musical Theatre Extravaganza for 7–16 year olds. The week long courses are led by leading industry professionals and each week includes a trip to see a West End musical. Students will learn new skills in dance, singing and drama whilst building confidence, having fun and making new friends. Following the success of recent holiday schools, where parents were astounded at just how much was achieved in only 5 days, these summer schools are filling up quickly. Thinking ahead to the September term, why not sign up your little performer to a free taster at a Saturday School? They have branches in Camden, Hackney, Greenwich and Docklands and so you’re sure to find one in a convenient location for you. During the taster day you will have the opportunity to meet with the Principal and Founder Anna Fiorentini, when she will explain how the school works and all the exciting projects on offer. Although the main focus is to increase confidence and selfesteem, they are proud to say that many have gone on to gain leading roles on TV, film and the West End stage thanks to their theatrical agency.
