Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity) is launching a brand new, digital learning and entertainment hub to showcase the “Power of Play” and how it helps children cope with life’s challenges, big or small. The hub is packed full of free inspiring ideas, spectacular stories and fun activities to bring the incredible power of play to children and families. Everyone can access the hub at www.gosh.org/the-power-of-play. New stories on the Power of Play hub show play helping household names like Beano’s Dennis and Gnasher overcome difficult situations. Play features in re-imagined classics including the first new Peter Pan story from GOSH Charity in 15 years. Alice, Tweedledee and Tweedledum star in a brand-new poem, narrated by Matt Lucas. A brand-new Horrid Henry animation, and an audiobook from CBeebies’ JoJo & Gran Gran will also be available for families on GOSH Charity’s new digital Power of Play hub from October. The free animations, audiobooks and activities will help parents and children deal with themes including loss, loneliness, sadness, illness and isolation, which many children have experienced during the pandemic. Life’s everyday challenges like making new friends or moving to a new environment such as a new school are also addressed through the lens of play. GOSH’s dedicated hospital Play Team, the largest in Europe, use their skills every day to support seriously ill children from across the UK to understand and cope with their treatment and recovery. This expertise has shaped each story, activity and idea on the Power of Play hub. Matt Lucas, who narrates the new “Dee Without Dum” told Primary Times, “What is Tweedledee without Tweedledum? As we discover in this beautiful new poem, he is worried and anxious at being far away from his much-loved brother. It was a moving experience to step back into the characters of Dee and Dum once more, and share their feelings with other children and parents who might have struggled with being far away from their loved ones, especially during the last 18 months. I hope the raucous, playful game that Alice introduces them to in this poem will inspire parents and children alike to turn to play as a way of coping during times of sadness.”
How One School Is Using the Power of Reuse to Inspire Pupils to Recycle
Primary Times spoke to teacher Dennis Hollywood from Charlton Manor Primary School in Greenwich who shared his school’s strategy to engage pupils to get passionate about recycling. From compost heaps to arts and crafts, Dennis shared how they’re bringing sustainability into the classroom. “There is a need for schools, now more than ever, to prepare students for their future and the challenges that come with it. As a primary school teacher, I know that encouraging pupils to think about issues around recycling at an early age is essential as it gives them the skills they need to guarantee a future for themselves. “One of the most important aspects of how we teach recycling is to first ensure that the materials we use in school can be recycled. By educating pupils and families on the less traditional products that can be recycled, eg pens and ink cartridges, we can ensure that these good habits continue in and out of school. In our school, we have various recycling bins for different items and we not only teach students how to recycle but also how to reuse products. We’ve organised arts and crafts competitions for our pupils and have seen so many inventive entries made from recyclable materials such as bottles and paper cups. “The recycling programme at Charlton Manor comes directly from our teachers. Recycling is at the centre of our school ethos and this has really helped us to attract staff that understand the importance of sustainability and want to find new ways of introducing it into our school. Resources such as the WRAP Action Pack really help students to understand the importance of recycling in a fun and 4

interactive way. Using these types of resources can really help students to be more action-driven and it helps them understand how the small changes they make can have an impact on a global scale. “Our school chef, Joe, teaches the importance of recycling in the kitchen by showing our pupils the benefits of reusing food they would otherwise throw away. Anything that can’t be used such as egg shells and bones are all recycled. Joe teaches pupils how older fruits and vegetables can be used to make soups and chutneys as well as how to compost foods and fertilise the school gardens. Taking what they’ve learned from school and putting it into practice in their own family kitchens, pupils have the opportunity to develop long term habits that can last them the rest of their lives.” Charlton Manor worked with Recycle Now who have developed a WRAP Action Pack which offers a way for teachers to effortlessly bring recycling into the classroom with lots of ideas for incorporating recycling into the curriculum in a fun and instructive way. Did you know? Computer coding and touch-typing are key digital life skills that prepare your child for the future! As computers permeate every facet of our lives, it is a well-known fact that the digital skills gap has been increasing. In the UK alone, it’s thought that close to a million jobs remain unfilled in 2021 many of which require digital skills. Computer coding and touch-typing are key digital life skills and like spoken languages, the earlier a child starts, the more competent they will be later in life.
Spark4Kids are running in-person and online holiday workshops that introduce children to computer coding and touch-typing through the medium of games. There are coding courses available on Minecraft Modding, Roblox Coding, Robotics, Games Design, Unity/C#, Python and JavaScript as well as touch-typing – all in a fun, engaging environment - suitable for ages 5-7, 8-12 and 13-16 years. The workshops are taking place in-person (in Dulwich) and online from Monday 18 October through to Friday 29 October. Visit the Spark4Kids website (www.spark4kids.com/october-workshops) or call 020 8090 1444 for more details.

Discover the Benefits of Taking Part in the Performing Arts
At the Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School, they believe that participating in the performing arts can be extremely beneficial. For example, the idea of getting up in front of people to perform or even talk may be extremely daunting for a shy child. But with the help of the school’s encouraging and supportive teachers, students will step out of their comfort zone by using their imagination and participating in fun games and activities to build confidence. Students will also be taught valuable public speaking skills like projection and pronunciation so that they can speak comfortably in front of a group of people. Anna Fiorentini classes help children learn how to collaborate with others. It can be an excellent opportunity for children who have a hard time fitting in. They may even come away with a group of new, like-minded friends. Students often get a great sense of achievement from participating in shows with friends. And if they sign up to the schools this term, they’ll get the opportunity to perform at the Anniversary Showcase next year! The Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School has branches in various locations in London for students aged between 4-18 years old. For more information visit www.annafiorentini.com

Oliver Twist (Online)
The best shows around... If You Go Down to the Woods Today…
Fairy tales aren’t always what they seem! There are some stories which we all tell our children and always remain the same….or do they? What if Goldilocks can’t remember meeting the three bears? What if Beauty couldn’t see past the Beast’s looks? This October at Blackheath Halls, expect the unexpected in contemporary twists on two classic fairy tales. Goldilocks becomes Oldilocks, and she seems to remember eating a bowl of porridge in a house owned by Three Bears but she can’t recall exactly what happened so she sets out to see if a little forest trip can jog her memory. Garlic Theatre presents Oldilocks and the Three Bears on Saturday 30 October at 11am and 3pm. We’re all used to Beauty finding the Beast in a large castle where he has been locked away under a curse? Born into poverty and misfortune, Oliver Twist escapes the workhouse for a life of adventure where he joins Artful Dodger, Fagin and their mischievous gang of pick pockets. But the enjoyment is short lived as he falls under the influence of the vicious Bill Sykes. Bold and beautiful, this highly acclaimed version of Oliver Twist sends you on a dark adventure through the twisted streets of London. It was described by WhatsOnStage as, “an unmissable, extraordinary production”. Emerging from the pandemic, the team at Greenwich Theatre has made an exciting choice for this year’s pantomime. “We could have gone with one of the easily recognised major titles” said artistic director James Haddrell. “Many theatres are relying on the likes of Cinderella or Aladdin to get them back on track and bring audiences back after missing last year’s Panto season. Those stories are great, and we’ll certainly be revisiting them in the future, but we wanted to come back with something new.” The theatre will therefore present a brand new take on The Queen of Hearts, the tale of the knave who stole the tarts. A major pantomime title in the past, there is every chance that this will be the only production of it in the country this year. Reuniting dame Andrew Pollard (who also writes and directs) with designer Cleo Pettitt and musical director Steve Markwick, this is set to feature all of the classic elements of a Greenwich pantomime - including the return of arch villain Anthony Spargo (last seen at Greenwich Theatre as the dastardly Miss Slighcarp in The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase) who appears as The King Of Clubs. In the show, which takes the nursery rhyme as its inspiration, the Knave of Hearts is a bit of a joker who’s in love with the Princess of Diamonds. The only problem is, she’s already got a boyfriend – the Prince of Spades. Maybe the Queen’s secret jam recipe will win her over? But then there’s the King of Clubs who’s also desperate to get his hands on the secret recipe… Tickets are selling fast, with a relaxed performance added this year too. How to See Jacqueline Wilson Live this Half Term
Family Theatre
Who Stole the Tarts?
Have you heard? The beloved children’s author, Jacqueline Wilson (plus some very special guests to be announced) is joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Mei-Ann Chen for a unique concert at the Barbican this half term. Her books have inspired generations of children for 30 years. Now the renowned writer joins forces with a full orchestra for a family concert that will carry you into the worlds of some of her favourite characters – the fearless Tracy Beaker, the determined Hetty Feather and many more. Wilson believes anything can tell a story – music included. This multimedia concert will expand the imagination with miraculous music by composers past and present, including well-known tunes like the iconic circus music Entrance of the Gladiators. You can expect sorcery in Nymphs by Mason Bates, charm in Anna Clyne’s Masquerade and rhythmic drive in Hans Christian Lumbye’s Copenhagen Steam Railway Gallop, not forgetting the iconic theme from CBBC’s The Story of Tracy Beaker – newly reimagined for orchestra! Before each show, get stuck into free creative workshops in the Barbican foyers, all themed around Jacqueline Wilson’s books. You can see the concert at either 4.30pm or 7pm on Saturday 23 October at the Barbican Centre. If anyone in your family is deaf or hard of hearing, the first of these will also be BSL-interpreted. Tickets cost £5 for under-18s and £10-16 for adults, plus booking fee, making it an affordable way to kick off your half term with a bang. Now you just have to think about what to do on the other eight days… Find more details on the Barbican’s website, www.barbican.org.uk/ whats-on

Plumstead Manor
At Plumstead Manor School they pride themselves on their transition programme to welcome Year 7 students. The school has a dedicated team of staff responsible for making sure that students are settled, stretched and challenged from the moment they join the school and is the basis on which they open up an extensive range of opportunities for them to learn, grow and succeed. Regular curriculum and parents’ evenings and forums give parents and carers the opportunity to work in partnership with teachers to support their child’s learning and steer the future of the school. The online communication platform ‘Insight’ ensures that parents are able to access all information regarding their son or daughter’s timetable, homework, attendance, behaviour and attainment, alongside scheduling appointments and contacting teachers. As well as accomplishments within their learning community, Plumstead Manor are also proud of the contributions their staff and students make within the wider community. They participate in a variety of activities from fund raising for charity and regular donations to food banks to literacy, science, maths and performing arts programmes run in collaboration with primary schools in the community who would not otherwise have access to specialist equipment and teaching. Facilities at the school include a new performing arts theatre complex with music, dance and drama studios. All buildings have been refurbished and are open to students from 8am until 5pm offering a wide variety of sports, performing arts and special interest clubs to further cultivate the highest expectations for academic scholarship, outstanding behaviour and personal development.
Festive Fun for Everyone with Water Rokit!
This Christmas get your kids outside with an exciting and hands-on, science-based Water Rokit. Hinterland’s original water rocket has been entertaining and educating children, teenagers, parents and teachers around the world for decades. Its simple assembly makes it perfect for science experiments or for pure fun out in the fresh air with kids racing to collect rockets from far afield. All you need, alongside your Water Rokit kit, is a used plastic carbonated drinks bottle, a bicycle pump and some water (try and use recycled water). The water rocket flies really fast and high into the air. It can reach the height of a ten-storey building! You have to see it to believe it. Newton’s Laws of Motion in front of your very eyes. The officially licenced NASA Water Rokits bring a fresh view to space travel this century. Inspiring children to be tomorrow’s engineers, scientists and astronauts. In 2024, NASA and its partners will be landing the first woman and next man on the moon with its Artemis Programme. Get the kids’ imaginations fired up with the Water Rokit and feed their interest in space exploration and what it means to planet earth. To find out more, visit www.waterrokit.com
An Outstanding Academy
Harris Academy Beckenham (fondly called HABE) is an outstanding academy set in the leafy Bromley suburbs. Its reputation for excellence and high achievement is well recognised and documented in the local community. HABE is a school that has confidence in the conviction of its educational offerings catering to students of all abilities who are taught by a truly extraordinary and committed teaching staff. At the Academy, they ensure that the interests, strengths and ambitions of every student are awarded equal weighting, whatever their passion may be. This is achieved by delivering a curriculum that operates outside of the knowledgerich classrooms. Staff teach the students how to explore and delve deeper into their subjects, give them the confidence to question their learning and, ultimately, the skillsets to achieve in any setting and at a level beyond which they thought possible. They place great emphasis on the wider enrichment programme where students have the opportunity to participate in over 100 clubs and travel globally and nationally. HABE’s outdoor educational programme is really relished by students. The students never cease to amaze but do go and see for yourself just how special HABE really is. As soon as you arrive at the impressive entrance, you cannot help but feel you are about to enter and experience something that is truly unique and extraordinary which they call the HABE way. 16

- Diversity in Children’s Books The DESIblitz Literature Festival 2021 opened in September with leading British South Asian and South Asian literary names for a mix of in-person and digital events. The festival’s aim is to encourage young and aspiring British Asian writers with a programme of author events, workshops, performances and panel discussions, showcasing the work of British South Asian authors and poets, and international writers with South Asian heritage. Primary Times were lucky enough to go to the panel discussion on diversity in children’s books with authors Monika Singh Gangotra, Serena Patel, Sita Brahmachari, and Irfan Master with Tommy Sandhu hosting. Tommy: Why is it important that we see ourselves in stories if stories are escapism? Monika: I agree that books are a way to escape your world, but I also believe that you still want to be you when you’re escaping the world that you’re in. So when you’re escaping the world into characters you can’t relate to, it’s no more than living a normal life. When you’re reading a book and you find characters that are aspirational because they look like you, you become a hero in your own life. That’s why books about empowerment and loving the skin you’re in need to be out there - so you feel seen. My colour wasn’t seen. As I’ve gotten older I want people to see my colour, I want them to see I’m brown and that I’m different, because that’s what makes me amazing and makes my kids amazing and our community amazing. I think building our lives in that way, in empathy through diverse characters in books is really important. Tommy: Would you agree with that, Serena? And what books influenced you growing up? Serena: Yeah, I think I never questioned the fact that there were no characters who looked like me who were the hero of the story, but I think it compounded
something in me, again growing up in a majority white community. It compounded feelings of being invisible, that your voice didn’t matter, that your story didn’t matter. Equally, I’ve had messages from readers who are not from a South Asian community, and they’ve never come across a brown person in their lives, but they’ve read Anisha (Serena’s latest book series) and they’ve learnt something new. It works on two levels, it’s a reflection but it’s also a window into someone else’s experience. Coming back to what Monika said, that creates empathy. If kids from other backgrounds can see a brown child as the hero of a story, that does something as well, and I think that can be really powerful. Tommy: What does the power of a good story do for children? Irfan: Why is it important for that 5/6 year old to see him/herself in a story? If they feel like superheroes, then they could possibly change the world. Tommy: And for yourself Sita? I want to know the power of a story and what it can do for the kids? Sita: For me, writing stories was initially to help myself, to piece myself together, but now it’s also an offering to children. And you see it, that sense of needing all the pieces of my history talked about, in stories. Belonging. I wrote a book called Corey’s Rock recently with an illustrator called Jane Ray, and when we were growing up we used to go to Orkney on holiday. I have a picture of me and my dad and he’s looking out to sea and he’s standing on a rock and I’m standing next to him. I remember the conversation. I
said, “Dad, what are you looking at? Are you looking for seals?” And he said, “No, I’m looking for home.” And little girl Sita saw the tears in his eyes and he said, “I will always be suspended between worlds.” Children see this stuff! When I was working in Notting Hill in the eighties, I was doing work with young people in communities where they were experiencing extreme racism, and lack of opportunity. I’m old enough now to know that there are repeats in history. There is always the voice of the author, there is always something you want to express and feel, and I’m really emotional when I’m writing, because you’ve got this chance to put something in this book. Then young people write to you about being inspired to write their own books and you think, “this is the best job in the world!” Tommy summed up the discussion with this: When I think back to my childhood, I loved stories. You lose yourself in other worlds, so on a final note I just want to say thank you for creating those worlds for children, it’s brilliant. The panel was full of challenging and inspiring messages, but what really stood out was that the inclusion of more diverse authors in children’s literature is a team effort for a shared gain - we all have a responsibility. The DESIblitz Literature Festival was organised by DESIblitz, the UK’s leading British Asian web magazine. For more information, please visit www.desiblitz.com.

How to carve the perfect pumpkin…
1. Choose a large pumpkin and let a grownup use a sharp serrated knife to cut off the crown. 2. Using a large serving spoon, scoop out the seeds and fibres and discard. Then remove some of the flesh. 3. With a marker pen, draw a simple outline of a face on the pumpkin. Get a grown-up to use a small serrated knife to cut out the eyes, nose and mouth. Always cut away from you in case the knife slips. 4. Pop a tea light inside the pumpkin, light it and replace the crown.
