Film Preview Guide We’ve all been missing going to the cinema this past year. We may have got square eyes watching the television so much but it really isn’t the same as the big screen is it? We’ve got some great ideas for you for your ﬁrst trip back (plus one or two also available on streaming services).

Felix and the Hidden Treasure Felix and the Hidden Treasure is an adventurous and heart-warming story for all the family. Convinced that his father, who disappeared at sea two years ago, is still alive, 12-year-old Felix embarks on a search for him in the company of Old Tom, a retired ﬁsherman, Squawk, a thieving one-legged parrot, and Rover, a cat who acts like a dog.Their journey takes them to Darkshadow Island, where a secret community inhabits an underground city, ruled by the megalomaniacal Morgäa, possessor of a priceless treasure. Felix and the Hidden Treasure from Signature Entertainment will be in cinemas nationwide from 4 June with previews from 28 May.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines From the humans who brought you Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie comes The Mitchells vs.The Machines, an animated action-comedy about an ordinary family who find themselves in the middle of their biggest family challenge yet… saving the world from the robot apocalypse. No big deal, right? It all starts when creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people”. Her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. But just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot uprising! Everything from smart phones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are employed to capture every human on the planet. Now it’s up to the Mitchells, including upbeat mom Linda, quirky little brother Aaron, their squishy pug Monchi, and two friendly, but simple-minded robots to save humanity.The Mitchells vs.The Machines is on Netflix now.

Hotel Transylvania – Monster Pets Are you a fan of the Hotel Transylvania ﬁlms. Can’t wait for the last of the series, Hotel Transylvania:Transformania, due out later this year? Well you’re in luck. Sony Pictures Animation have produced a short online movie to tide you over available on YouTube or Facebook. In Monster Pets, Drac’s lovable, monster-sized puppy,Tinkles, has more energy than ever and just wants to play ball! Unfortunately, Drac is too busy juggling his duties at the hotel, so he is determined to ﬁnd a monster pet companion for his huge furry friend.After a series of mismatches, Drac’s plan goes awry when Tinkles chooses a very unlikely companion.

Tom and Jerry One of the most famous rivalries in history comes back to life in the live-action/ animated hybrid ﬁlm when Jerry moves into New York City’s ﬁnest hotel on the eve of “the wedding of the century,” forcing the event’s desperate planner to hire Tom to get rid of him, in director Tim Story’s “Tom and Jerry.” The ensuing cat and mouse battle threatens to destroy her career, the wedding and possibly the hotel itself. But soon, an even bigger problem arises - a diabolically ambitious member of the hotel staff conspiring against all three of them.Tom and Jerry is out on digital platforms on 17 May and on physical and video-on-demand on 24 May.

Peter and the Primary Times Team

Banana and Raspberry Breakfast Smoothie Cup Cakes Ingredients – you will need: Makes 12 25g rolled oats 1 banana, peeled 75g raspberries 1 tbsp maple syrup 100ml milk 4 tbsp natural yoghurt 2 eggs 100ml sunflower oil 40g dried cranberries 250g self-raising flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 300g butter, softened 300g icing sugar You will also need 12 cupcake cases and a cupcake tin to sit them in, together with a piping bag & star nozzle (optional).

Method 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C, 160°C fan, gas mark 4. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases.

2 Make the smoothie by placing the oats, banana, 50g of the

raspberries, maple syrup, milk and yoghurt into a blender and blend until smooth.

3 Add the eggs and sunflower oil and blend again. 4 Place the cranberries, flour and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl and make a well in the centre. Pour in the smoothie and fold in the dry ingredients.

5 Spoon into the paper cases and bake for 18-20 minutes, until risen and golden. Cool on a cooling rack.

6 To make the icing, beat together the butter, icing sugar and remaining raspberries. Spoon into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe over the cooled cakes. If you don’t have a piping bag, spread the icing over the cakes. Always ask an adult to help when using a hot oven.

Cupcake Day 2021 The Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day is on 17 June and they would like your help. Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer and affect 1 million by 2025. The Alzheimer’s Society’s services have been used nearly 3 million times since March and have been a lifeline to thousands, but there are so many more who urgently need their help. So dust off your baking bowls, whip out your whisks and unite against dementia by signing up for Cupcake Day at www.cupcakeday.org.uk and raising some much needed funds. Each cupcake sold this Cupcake Day will help the Alzheimer’s Society reach more people through vital support services, like the Dementia Connect support line. Join Brake’s Kids Walk

Thousands of school children are walking for road safety this June, with Brake’s Kids Walk. Brake, the road safety charity, is organising the event in which thousands of schoolchildren across the UK will take part in a short, supervised walk to promote important road safety messages. Children will walk in pairs in crocodile formation within their community, to emphasise the importance of being able to walk without fear or threat from traffic or pollution. The walk will take place on Wednesday 16 June. By signing up to Brake’s Kids Walk, schools and educators can access a free action pack featuring lesson plans, assemblies, activities, and posters, all brightly illustrated and featuring popular Shaun the Sheep characters. As well as teaching children vital road safety skills, Brake’s Kids Walk raises awareness among parents and other adults of the need to protect children on our roads. Posters and demonstration materials highlight what children need to be able to walk safely in their communities: footpaths, cycle paths, safe places to cross, and slow and clean traffic. Brake has been running walking events for school children at a national level for more than 15 years. The charity is also behind Road Safety Week – the UK’s biggest road safety campaign each November. All schools and education communities are invited to sign up to Brake’s Kids Walk 2021. Education News Learn about Animals at Home

The RSPCA has launched a new education programme for parents to teach their children about animal welfare at home. The new programme focuses on the welfare of dogs, cats and rabbits and provides parents with information and activities they can

do with their children. During the pandemic, there has been a huge surge in pet ownership and these activities can help prepare those families who are thinking about getting a pet, or help those who have recently bought or adopted a pet, to learn more about their animal’s needs and behaviour. The programme begins by introducing the concept of compassion and outlining the animal’s needs, there are then a range of discovery activities focusing on dogs, cats and rabbits for parents and children to complete together, and the final section is advocacy which brings together their learning and encourages the family to champion animal welfare in a creative and imaginative way. This could be carrying out a litter pick, creating a wildlife friendly garden, or keeping an eye out for higher welfare labels like RSPCA Assured when shopping. David Allen, Head of Education and Prevention at the RSPCA, told Primary Times, “Whilst adults should always be ultimately responsible for pets, caring for them can involve the whole family. Children can help with things like cleaning small animal enclosures, preparing a pet’s food and enjoying going out for walks with the dog - all as part of regular supervised family activities. Helping to care for pets can encourage children to become more responsible and increase their empathy and compassion to others.”

How to Help a Reluctant Reader The team at Clarssroom Private Tuition have put together a few tips for you. Reading is an important life skill. A popular quote says ‘Today’s reader, tomorrow’s leader’ (Margaret Fuller). We all want the best for our children and being able to read and comprehend is essential to making the most of life. So, what do you do if your child is a reluctant reader? Note that a reluctant reader is different from a struggling reader. If your child is a struggling reader, do get in touch with Clarssroom so that they can help you better understand what the challenges are specifically, and help your child overcome them. If your child is showing little to no interest in reading, the following tips can help get them consuming a few paragraphs or pages each day and in time even enjoying it!

1. Relate it to something they enjoy

We are more inclined to do things we enjoy and that probably goes double for children. So, if they enjoy singing, why not try to get them reading song lyrics (obvious) or a little about the songwriter or original singer (not so obvious). If they enjoy playing a particular video game, you could get them reading about the video game character or even the makers. Also, try various content, not just books, but comics, poems, magazines etc.

2. Make it fun

If your child thinks reading is a chore then they are likely to be disinterested in it. But if they identify with different characters in fiction or with books related to a TV show or movie they enjoy, that will change their perspective of reading. Another simple, quick and fun thing that can really help to improve your child’s reading skills is to turn on subtitles whilst they are watching TV and movies – that way, TV time is also reading time. 14

3. Read with them

Lead (and read) by example. Consider reading through a recipe with them, a non-fiction story or a popular fairy tale. Then discuss what you think and how it makes you feel.You could take turns to read a chapter out loud. Let your child see you reading where possible and, if they ask, let them know why you are reading.You might be reading a news article (to be informed), a novel (to unwind/be entertained) or a textbook (to pass an exam).

4. Make them comfortable

The skill of reading is better learned than forced, so find out what your child is comfortable with and start there. It might help to have a dedicated reading time, even if it is just a few minutes, as well as a dedicated reading area if possible. Let them develop this skill at their own pace.

Physics isn’t the first GCSE Ipin has taken early, having passed her iGCSE Maths Higher Tier in 2019, when she was just seven years old. Ipin, who is now studying towards taking her A Levels in Maths and Physics, said on her ambitions for the future, “I would like to be the youngest person to attend the University of Cambridge. Lockdown Learning

A nine year old Blackheath High School pupil has achieved Grade 8 iGCSE Physics during lockdown, taking the exam six years early. Seojin Park (known as Ipin) who is in Year 5 at Blackheath High, was inspired by her science lessons at school and started studying Physics during her summer holidays. Catching up After Lockdown Primary Times explores some of the ways we can try to bridge the gap in education after lockdown. The term ‘extra-curricular’ has probably never meant more to us than it does now, after the unprecedented upheaval of standard education that we’ve experienced over the last year or so! Many parents may inevitably be searching for the means to begin the ‘catch up work’ that they feel is needed, to replace what was lost during lockdown. Back in Autumn 2020, the Department for Education estimated that students in years 3-7 were on average a month behind on reading, and three months behind in maths. These findings prompted government funding to be allocated to help schools support children and enable them to regain confidence in these areas - to the relief of many. But, with access to these schemes depending on area and eligibility, some of us who want to give our kids an extra boost will be putting our homeschooling caps back on for a little while yet, at least. Primary Times takes a look at some top ways to boost learning after lockdown, both at school and at home.

Create a Reading List

Luckily, reading is something that can easily be worked on at home. Take some time to sit down with your child and make a list of books that they would be interested in reading over a period of weeks. Remind them - you can’t judge a book by it’s cover! Try to encourage one or two choices that might be a little out of their normal comfort zone, so that they have a broad range of themes. Allocating daily time for them to read independently (every night before bed works well), or with you, will have a positive effect on their confidence, vocabulary, writing, and their world knowledge.

Summer Schools

Current government guidance states that by mid-June, schools should be informing parents whether they plan to run a summer school, and if so, how many places they intend to offer. These will be particularly beneficial to (and largely aimed at) children who are making the transition to Secondary Education. Check your child’s school website for latest news or ask their teacher for more information on availability in your local area!

Tuition

While private tuition may be an option that could certainly give your child an extra legup on the curriculum, eligible families can also take advantage of the National Tutoring Programme. It’s a scheme in which schools are offered access to subsidised tuition for children who require extra support following the effects of Covid-19. The government provided £350M to fund this scheme at the end of last year, and it will be in place until academic year 2021/2022.

Maths is everywhere…

Whether it’s weighing out ingredients to bake a cake, cutting up a pizza into fractions or getting them to measure the height of their brothers and sisters – maths in the home is all around you when you look for it. There are also some great, free online resources like www.mathsontoast.org. uk or www.whiterosemaths. com that are packed with at-home mathematical activities designed to flex their arithmetic muscles.

Fun Gardening Activities for Children It’s National Children’s Gardening Week from 29 May to 6 June, so it’s the perfect time to get children into gardening. Whether you have a small patio or a large lawn, gardening is a great and inexpensive way to get your little ones outside, appreciating nature and getting creative. Here are some fun ideas which we’ve put together in conjunction with Squire’s Garden Centres to get your children into gardening. Quirky Planter Creations

Turn unwanted items into perfect plant pots! You’ll be amazed at what can be recycled – old wellies, a pair of jeans, empty food tins or even plastic bottles all make fantastic planters. Then watch as your flowers bloom.

Create Crackin’ Cress Heads

Carefully remove the top of your eggs, wash the shells and dab them dry. Draw faces on your shells with felt tip pens. Dip some cotton wool in water, squeeze out the excess, and then place one cotton wool ball inside each shell. Sprinkle a few cress seeds on top. Sit your cress-filled shells in egg cups or an egg box on a sunny windowsill and watch them grow! Cress seeds are available for £1.99 at Squire’s.

Bring Bees to Your Garden

Gardens with bees mean that your flowers and fruit will be pollinated and then set seed, and most importantly produce fruit for you.To make bees welcome, why not add quiet areas in the garden for wildlife, including bees, to take over? World Bee Day is on 20 May.You could take the opportunity to make a bee hotel. Bee homes are fun to make and can be made into a pretty, as well as a useful, feature in the garden. Grow Your Own

Try growing tomatoes, strawberries or even a pumpkin in time for Halloween! Pumpkin seeds can be sown outdoors in May and June and are £1.99 per pack at Squire’s.

Encourage Other Wildlife into Your Garden

Add flowering plants such as lavender, foxgloves or roses which provide nectar, plant a shrub or tree for shelter, create a log pile for bugs and insects, or add a pretty ladybird tower to your garden.

Use a clean glass or jam jar and add a layer of decorative stones and sand. Top with soil, and then add moss on top that will act as grass. Plant miniature plants or cuttings into your jar.
