Ten Minutes with Christopher Biggins needs to love you and like you and I think that’s one of the biggest things. Also, it’s having a rapport with the audience, being able to talk to them. You know, it’s very exciting.

What is your favourite part to ever have played? Well, I think my biggest thing, and this may surprise you, my career has been very illustrious, I’ve done marvellous things in the 50 odd years I’ve been in this business, but the biggest one is I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!

Really?! The Churchill Theatre, Bromley are flying into Panto season and this year’s sparkly offering is Aladdin, with stars including Rikki Jay, Max Fulham and of course, Christopher Biggins. Rachel Benson from Primary Times took to the magic carpet to talk to Biggins about all things theatrical. The nation’s favourite panto dame is warm, welcoming and whimsical and has many stories to tell. We were very lucky to catch him one Monday morning to chat about Aladdin.

Are you excited to be at The Churchill? I am very excited indeed. The last time I was there it was about 20 years ago, and I was in a pantomime. Funnily enough I think it was Aladdin with Gloria Hunniford and Bonnie Langford.

Tell us a bit about your costume. Do you mean the one with the washing machine on my head? Yep! Well, you know, because it’s Aladdin, and Widow Twanky is head of the laundry, it’s always good to get laundries in, and washing and what have you. So, we discussed these things and the designers came up with the ideas. It’s a collective process. I’ve got a wonderful costume, and because I’m big they look so good because they’re big costumes. They’re like props really.

So you actually get a say in what you’re wearing? Yes, I have a big say in what I’m wearing.

It doesn’t look very comfortable to sit down in! No, no it’s not very comfy. You can’t sit down. Interestingly enough, I don’t like to keep any costume in the dressing room. So I have my basic (which is a leotard and tights thing) and I go up to the first floor, into the quick change room next to the stage, and all my costumes are there. I find it rather frightening being surrounded by costumes when I’m getting ready for the pantomime or relaxing, so they’re all upstairs when I get there.

I’ll tell you why, it’s because I won it, and the way I won it was through the love and affection the country had for me, and that was really extraordinary. It was breath taking actually. It was wonderful.

Have you ever had stage fright? Yes, I mean I can remember doing a play years ago, standing outside the door which I had to enter and I couldn’t remember a line. It’s terrifying. And you go on and the door opens and you’re there in front of the audience and you feel the heat of the lights and suddenly it all comes back to you. But it’s not easy.

Are there any parts you would really like to play? Not really. I’m at the stage of my career where I just enjoy what I do. I say no to things, which is very important, and it’s good, it’s really good.

Have you ever had any embarrassing moments on stage? Well, in pantomimes, there are lots! I remember I was in Brighton once and I had to invite children up on stage and one little boy was a little pale and a little nervous so I was very good and I didn’t go for him too much, and as I turned away I suddenly heard him go “bleurgh!” and he threw up on the stage. I turned around and said, “oh don’t worry, don’t worry!” and he threw up again! We’re now knee deep in vomit and I had to have it all cleared up by the comedy policemen, get rid of the children and carry on. It was a miracle but quite extraordinary.

Who is your favourite person to have worked with and why? Oh dear, a very difficult question. I did Guys and Dolls with Barbara Windsor many years ago and I absolutely loved it. She was Adelaide and I was Nathan Detroit and we had such a good time. It was a lovely tour and we really, really enjoyed ourselves.

Any advice for budding actors? Don’t do it. And I always say that, and I always qualify that by saying however, if you really want to do it, good luck!

What are the secrets to being a perfect pantomime dame?

Aladdin will be running from Saturday 7 December Sunday 5 January. For more information, please visit www.churchilltheatre.co.uk.

Well, I think it’s being yourself. She’s everyone’s best auntie, everyone’s best friend, everyone’s best sister. Everybody

There’s no better reason to bring together children, staff, families and the local community for a memorable, fun-filled, life-changing day. Money raised by Sport Relief helps to fund amazing organisations across the UK and around the world that are tackling some of the key issues of our time, including homelessness, mental health stigma and domestic abuse. Taking part in fundraising activities makes a fantastic contribution to children’s personal development, enhancing their empathy and understanding of others’ lives, as well as giving them experience of advocacy and active citizenship. There are lots of quick and easy ways to have fun and raise money. You and the children could: • Wear sports kit for the day in return for a small fee. • Sell Sport Relief wristbands in school. • Organise a Sport Relief Mile and join thousands across the UK as they get sponsored to walk, run, hop, scoot or swim. Or why not think big for Sport Relief 2020? Here’s how Valence School in Westerham, Kent, raised the amazing total of over £3,500 last Sport Relief! Fundraising Superheroes Valence School caters for students aged 4 to 19 who have physical disabilities and complex medical needs. Long-time supporters of Sport Relief, back in 2018 the primary school was transformed into a world of superheroes and imaginary vehicles for a sponsored Mile with a difference. Children and staff arrived for the day dressed up as their favourite superheroes and were divided into houses for a creative challenge. Armed with cardboard, sticky tape, glue and a wheelchair, older and younger children worked together with imagination and ingenuity to create everything from a yellow transformer to a red plane. Excitement mounted as the vehicles approached the start line for the Sport Relief Valence Mile. With Captain America running alongside Batman and Wonder Woman pushing Spiderman, the Mile wasn’t as easy as expected. But with some brave work by the superheroes, all teams made it to the finish. As always, Sport Relief proved a fantastic experience for all involved, bringing the school community together to share in fun, worthwhile activity.

Children aged 5 to 13 years are invited to take part in the Leeds Castle BIG Story Writing Challenge by writing an original, fictional story of no more than 900 words. There are two age groups, 5-9 and 10-13. The closing date for entries is 6 March. This year’s theme is ‘One Golden Day’. It’s inspired by an event that took place 500 years ago in 1520 when Henry VIII stayed at Leeds Castle with 5,000 of his courtiers. He was on his way to meet the King of France for a massive jamboree that has since become known as ‘The Field of Cloth of Gold’. Leeds Castle was a royal palace at the time and it was in a key position between London and Dover. Just think what your mum or dad’s reaction might be if you invited a couple of friends for tea and the fridge was empty. Think what it must have been like for the stewards of the castle with 5000 coming to stay and one of them was the King who was known to get pretty grumpy if things weren’t just right. We haven’t even mentioned all the horses and dogs or the luggage – no Easyjet luggage allowance for Henry VIII. Oh and fridges hadn’t been invented yet! Let your imagination go wild on a theme of ‘One Golden Day’.Your story can be set in the past, present or future it’s up to you! You’ll have the chance to win some great prizes! The 20 talented finalists will be invited to the Grand Awards Ceremony on 29 May 2020. Join Clare Balding, one of the judges, in the Castle for this very special day when the two overall winners will be announced. The winning story from each category will win: • A stay at Knight’s Glamping • Tickets to the Fireworks Spectacular 2020 • A hamper of fun prizes • The full collection of Clare Balding’s children’s books • Publication of the top stories on ‘Fonetti’ – the world’s first listening book shop.

To submit your story visit www.leeds-castle.com/storywriting Primary Times are media partners of Leeds Castle for the competition. So, go ahead and good luck! 4

London Pupil Celebrated for National Design Success

A primary school pupil from Eltham is celebrating being named one of 11 winners in a UK-wide design competition, as pupils across the UK start working towards getting their hands on his winning design. With over 120,000 entries, it is one of the biggest design competitions for children in the UK. Franek, aged 10, from St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, entered the WOW badge design competition from Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking. WOW is Living Streets’ award-winning year-round walk to school challenge, which sees children who walk to school at least once a week rewarded with collectable badges each month, designed by pupils in a UK-wide competition. This year’s theme was ‘inventions that changed the world’ and Franek chose to create a colourful telescope design because, with the help of this useful tool, humans like Galileo studied astronomy and found out that the earth is a sphere. Franek’s design has now been turned into one of the monthly badges and will be awarded to pupils in over 2,000 schools across the UK who travel actively to school during December. WOW badges are made in the UK from recycled yoghurt pot material. For more information about the scheme, please visit www.livingstreets.org.uk.

Christmas Spirit at Red House

Medieval inspired Christmas returns to Red House in Bexleyheath this year from 8 November to 15 December, but this year it’s with a literature twist. At Reading Red House, you can discover and listen to the medieval stories and tales that inspired the house and the artwork that adorns its walls. Following Red House tradition, the house will be decorated with festive dried hops and lavender in the spirit of William Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites who celebrated Christmas like a medieval household. Keep a look out - you might find some literature themed decorations along the way as well. As if all this wasn’t enough, Red House has some great Christmas and wintery events to keep you busy. Olde Father Christmas, in his traditional green suit, will be visiting for story time and there will be a gift for every child from 30 November to 1 December. In addition, Cancionero will be singing carols in medieval dress on 7 December with an evening concert and an earlier family-friendly one too. There’s plenty of Christmas Spirit at Red House this year. For more information, please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/red-house.

Celebrate Greenwich Theatre’s 50th Anniversary with Sleeping Beauty

It’s that time of year! In celebration of their 50th Anniversary, Greenwich Theatre proudly presents one of the country’s favourite traditional pantomimes, Sleeping Beauty. Recognised annually as one of the best in the country, the Greenwich Theatre pantomime is even more special this year as it represents a cornerstone in the theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Andrew Pollard, the dame of dames, can’t wait to get “the family” back together for a Sleeping Beauty that also pays tribute to Ewan Hooper, the man who saved the building from demolition back in 1969. A stellar cast will bring to life the story of a time-hopping sleeping princess and an artistic director fighting to save a derelict theatre. Alongside a host of new surprises, set to be unveiled in the retelling of this classic fairy tale, audiences will also enjoy seeing returning faces, with the British Pantomime Awards nominated Anthony Spargo appearing as the villain, and musical maestro ‘Uncle Steve’ Markwick and the band creating all the wonderful music. Time is ticking and with all children’s tickets half price, early booking is strongly advised. For more information or to book tickets, please visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk or call 020 8858 7755. Helen O’Grady Drama Academy Developing Potential

The 2017 Public Health England’s study of children’s mental health found one in twelve children had an emotional disorder including anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. All too often society focuses on written English and the analytical skills of maths to deliver statistics. From childhood upwards, everyone needs to have the confidence to convey their thoughts and feelings though oral communication. They should possess the skills to express opinions politely and confidently so they can have a voice in a classroom or workplace, as well as knowing how to establish positive relationships with other people. These life skills give humans the freedom to develop to their full potential and have self-confidence in their own abilities. In 1979, Helen O’Grady, a trained teacher and actress, commenced drama classes. Her aims were to provide a self-development programme for children, which would encourage enthusiasm, energy and a positive approach to life. The classes would build ongoing confidence and self-esteem and develop skills in verbal communication as well as encouraging effective social interaction skills. Forty years later, the international Helen O’Grady Drama Academy is still delivering her vision around the globe. Take your child along to a free trial class to see how the programme works. For more information, please visit www.helenogrady.co.uk.

Well Done All the Arts

All the Arts Theatre School has swept the board at the prestigious Young Entertainers’ Academy Awards ceremony at The Churchill Theatre. School principal and former Brookside actress Lucy Morgans said, “To say that we are thrilled is an understatement”. This year’s GCSE results at Babington House were amazing with all the students achieving the grades they needed to move on into Babington’s Sixth Form and other prestigious schools. Emily was overjoyed to receive so many 9 grades. She told Primary Times, “there are only 1000 grade 9’s in the county and I’ve got five of them.” The coveted grade 9 is the equivalent of a double starred A, and 7 equates to an A grade. All the pupils exceeded their targets this year with 55% achieving grades 7 - 9 and 97% achieving grades 4 - 9. At A Level, Babington students achieved 84% A* - C grades and 100% pass rate. The mathematics students achieved 75% A* - A grades in maths and further maths. Sixth Formers are reaping the rewards of the unique A Level learning environment at Babington with expert tuition, attention and support. Tim Lello, Headmaster of Babington, told Primary Times, “The individual achievement and hard work of the staff and pupils shines through in these results and I am absolutely delighted.” For more information about the school, please visit www.babingtonhouse.com.
