Red House

The Red House is celebrating William Morris’ legacy of craftsmanship this year by encouraging everyone to embrace their artistic side over the summer holidays. They’re kicking off the celebration of art and crafts with a Community Craft Fair on Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 July in the glorious Red House garden. Go along and browse exhibits of local artists and craftsman, get involved in demonstrations and discover what your local area has to offer. Throughout August you can have a go at portraiture, sculpture and embroidery with the team at Red House to bring out your inner craftsman. Keep an eye out for pebble painting workshops and take away craft kits too. Red House will be finishing the summer with their Wild Land Art event on August bank holiday Monday. Join them as the grassy lawns of Red House become a wild canvas, help to collect natural materials and create a large piece of art. Pop along to have fun with nature and view your work from the same window in the house that William Morris would design from, 160 years ago. They are looking forward to seeing you soon. For their fourth Art Commission, NOW Gallery invites everyone to explore My Opera House, the imaginary world of Argentinean born artist Kinska. The quirky installation created predominantly from ceramics takes you on a beautiful journey into her surreal mind. Earlier last year, Kinska underwent a ceramic hip replacement, processing the experience in hospital with only sketchbooks to hand. This acted as a means of both creative expression and catharsis inevitably weaving a new storyline through the sculptural pieces created post recovery. This first large scale exhibition of the artist brings together around a thousand handmade ceramic pieces presented alongside her hospital sketchbooks. The highlight is a whimsical wooden house inspired by her studio under a rainy sky of hundreds of ceramic droplets or Gotas. Children are invited to step inside and explore the house and interact with individually themed sketchbooks in which they can write, draw and express themselves. Once outside they’re greeted by an intricately illustrated ceramic table and brightly coloured dice which can be enjoyed from the comfort of a playful carpet. NOW Gallery rejoices in Kinska’s pareidolic world which is open for all to enjoy and participate in. The individually hand-painted Gotas will be available to purchase, with 10% of each sale being donated to Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. My Opera House runs from 4 July - 22 September. For more information please visit www.nowgallery.co.uk.

Family Mission at HMS Belfast

It’s 1944 and the most important day of the war so far is looming. You and your family are needed as the latest naval recruits. Working as a team, use your Kit Bag to find hidden messages, predict the weather for sailing, discover ship life and crack some Morse code. This summer holiday learn about D-Day, the biggest invasion in history, as you explore HMS Belfast. This interactive storytelling experience is based on personal stories from those who served on D-Day. While you’re there see what life was like aboard this floating city as you weave your way through the bowels of the ship and climb up and down ladders across all 9 decks. Take the helm in the Captain’s chair and help recover a downed plane in an interactive game based on a real-life exercise. Keep a lookout up on the flag deck where you can get amazing 360-degree views of London, and delve deeper into the boiler and engine rosoms 15ft below sea level. See for yourself what life on board HMS Belfast was like as you walk past rooms like the bakery, the dentist’s office, the laundry room and the sick bay. On board you can learn how war affected and impacted on the morale, resilience and determination of the 950-strong crew, through the real life stories of the people who served on the ship.

Musical Theatre Summer Schools with a Twist

Go along and join the award- winning Anna Fiorentini Theatre and Film School this summer and explore West End to Broadway followed by Horrible Histories. We all love to learn about history, but some of us find it a bore. The only trouble with history is, that they’re not here anymore. We can only look at history through papers, online and apps, But what if we brought history back to life, through singing, dancing & facts? We can visit the court of Henry VIII, the king obsessed with power. Of his poor six wives, only one survived, and two were beheaded at the Tower. The Great Fire of London of 1666, as Samuel Pepys likes to tell, The smallest spark that lit up the dark and made London as ‘hot as hell’. And what about Queen Elizabeth I, whose teeth have never been forgotten? Green and black with toxic gaps, and her breath was oh so rotten. Vile Victorians, old London streets, rotten to the core, Kings and queens and tragedies and maybe the Civil War. This is just the start of what we will have in store,

Sign up now for our Summer Schools or new term in-take at our Saturday and evening schools.

A week of fun for everyone, with perhaps a little more. There’s singing, dance and dramas, and a little comedy too, A week of history brought to life especially by you. So let’s not make history boring, let’s bring it up to date And at the end of the week, a performance to celebrate.

The Leaders are Readers award-winning summer school is fun yet educational and available for any child from age 3½ to 13 years for four hours a day. Extended care is also available. All children, regardless of resources at home, tend to lose academic skills during the summer. At the Leaders are Readers Summer School, teaching maths and English for two hours daily allows for intense focus on these subjects. This can be a big help when learning challenging topics which might have been tough to handle during regular school, with many other subjects competing for lesson and homework time. For Reception and Years 1–6, all the foundational topics in a year’s curriculum are selected and taught thoroughly over 3 weeks. 11+, 8+, 7+, 5+ and 4+ entrance exam preparation is strategically covered from the Leaders are Readers Saturday School programmes. Alpha childcare has been running for the past 14 years and can be described as “a home away from home” kind of setting. Alpha started off with breakfast, afterschool and holiday clubs in the Eltham area of Greenwich. They soon extended into full day childcare and now run a chain of nurseries in Hackney, Greenwich, Rainham and soon Eltham. This is as a result of the passion and drive to watch children grow and develop during the early years. The nursery strives for excellence and ensures that all children develop holistically and become confident individuals. The dedicated, warm and friendly staff make this possible by working with the EYFS to create an environment that is stimulating thereby encouraging critical thinking, problem solving and creativity in the learning journey of all children. At Alpha, every child is treated as individual and unique. This has led to many parents testifying that their children are happy, ready to learn and finding out things for themselves. The organisation strongly believe no child should be left out irrespective of their culture, background or gender while also placing the safeguarding and welfare of every child at the top of their priorities. Alpha’s aim is to ensure that any child that attends any of their settings leaves with a solid foundation and a positive start to life. They are confident, that through regular training and supervision of staff they’re able to achieve this daily. For more information, visit www. alphachildcare.com

Ofsted’s report shows that students receive a brilliant all-round education that supports them to achieve their personal best, no matter what their starting point. Ofsted reported that, “Uncompromising ambition for the school is balanced by an ever-present concern for the wellbeing of pupils and staff… pupils are enthused and excited to excel” Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley have the highest expectations of all students and are incredibly proud of the progress they make during their time there. Budding Entrepreneurs at Borough Market

Borough Market will be hosting over 50 budding stall holders from 11 London primary schools at its annual Summer Produce Sale on Thursday 4 July from 11am–1.30pm in partnership with campaigning charity School Food Matters. Children from the local community will become market traders for the day, using their enterprise skills to sell school-grown fruit and vegetables in the glass-fronted Market Hall. All the proceeds will be donated to FareShare, an award-winning charity which seeks to relieve food poverty by rescuing good food that would otherwise go to waste. Every £1 raised will provide four meals for vulnerable families across the capital. To date, the ‘Young Marketeers’ programme has seen more than 7,000 primary school children growing produce in 58 different schools, with close to 800 students coming to sell 45 different varieties of fruit and vegetables at London’s 1,000 year old market.

The tiny traders will kick off proceedings in traditional style by ringing Borough Market’s iconic bell to start their sales. This is the culmination of an annual programme which starts at Borough Market in the spring, when former Blue Peter Gardener, Chris Collins, teaches the children the art of growing fruit and veg from seed. They visit various market traders to learn top tips on how to run a winning market stall - from marketing, to food hygiene, to customer service. In June, primary schools receive a visit from a skilled horticulturist and receive further tips on how to ensure a bumper crop.

Bookmark Volunteer Reading Programme

Literacy charity, Bookmark Reading, is looking to partner with London primary schools that want help in providing reading support to children in Years 1 to 3. Bookmark matches schools with vetted and trained volunteers from the local community, through their easyto-use digital platform. The reading programme is designed to improve children’s literacy and enjoyment of reading in the early years, when it can have the greatest impact on their future progress. The charity’s six-week reading programme provides children with two, 30-minute face-to-face reading sessions each week with a volunteer, at the cost of just £1 per session (£12 per programme) for the school. Schools have the flexibility to decide how long children stay on the programme, with the option to extend to twelve weeks or more. The charity also offers five complimentary reading programmes to each school that signs up. The sessions are designed to support the reading schemes that teachers use in the classroom, as well as encourage reading for pleasure through literacy games and activities. Sessions are booked through Bookmark’s digital platform, meaning that schools simply need to choose dates and times that suit their timetable. The charity is currently recruiting schools in London for programmes starting in September 2019 and will be rolling the scheme out nationwide in 2020. Schools wishing to register their interest, or those who are interested in volunteering with Bookmark, should visit www.bookmarkreading.org.

Year 12 ‘Sixtons’ organised a school sleepover - ‘Sleepington at Babington’. They charged Year 7 - 9 pupils to sleepover and organised entertainment, takeaway pizzas, refreshments and supervision. Great fun (but not a huge amount of sleep) was had by all. From their £10 the ‘Sixtons’ raised £813 in total in just 4 weeks and learnt a great deal in the process. Half the profits will go to Babington’s trip and outings fund with the other half reinvested in the Student Enterprise Scheme. 26,083 entries were received by Young Enterprise in total in 2019 for the Tenner Challenge across the various categories. To win an award in the National Finals is exceptional. The Lower Sixth ‘Sixtons’ students and their parents attended to the Awards Ceremony at the Bank of England. Their award was presented by Andrew Ring from Hitachi Capital UK. Tim Lello, Babington’s Headmaster, told Primary Times, “This is a fantastic achievement which demonstrates great organisational and entrepreneurial skills. Thank you to Mrs Parra for spearheading the initiative and congratulations to our Year 12 pupils on this national award.” For more information about Babington House School, visit www.babingtonhouse.com.

The Children’s Refugee Crisis

Do you sometimes find it hard to explain to your pupils or your children about the refugee crisis? A new book, Forced to Flee, in which refugee children explain, in their own words and pictures, their thoughts, feelings and experiences about being forced to flee their homes for safety has been produced by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. This children’s book focuses on three ongoing refugee situations - Syria, South Sudan and Central America. Forced to Flee explains for a young audience how each crisis came about, why children and their families had to flee, the support that they receive from UNHCR and other organisations and what life is like for them now. Harrowing and heart breaking, the artworks by child refugees vividly highlight the impact that conflict and war have on people’s lives. Forced to Flee is an educational title that will support children’s study of current affairs, raise awareness of the ongoing refugee crisis and help children to be more empathetic by thinking about the lives of other children around the world. Funds raised will contribute to supporting UNHCR and refugees.

Education News Zara Tippey says she is delighted to be joining the community at the King Henry School and has already been impressed by its friendly and purposeful atmosphere. She comes to the School with extensive classroom and leadership experience from a range of educational environments, as well as a Master’s degree in Education. She has strong ambitions for the future of the school and is looking forward to putting them into practice. Her aim is to ensure outstanding and inclusive education experiences, with high expectations, for every child who is part of the school community. She believes a significant part of her role is to spend as much time with the students and staff as possible, sharing in their learning opportunities and celebrating their many successes. Zara is driven by a passion and determination to help every child in her care to become a confident and independent member of society. “Mr Deehan and his talented team have already made huge strides since King Henry School began working within The Odyssey Trust for Education last September” she says, “most noticeably in how students conduct themselves and in attitudes to learning. I intend to continue that good work by instilling a strong work ethic in our students and staff, a pride in their school, and in appropriate academic and vocational rigour”. Zara is a firm advocate of comprehensive education and believes that schools should serve the communities in which they exist. As such, her vision for King Henry School is “that we are the hub of our local community, a first-choice for students within the area we serve. Through our values of being courteous and respectful, kind and supportive, courageous and resilient there will be no cap on ambition. Students in all year groups across the school will be offered a consistently high standard of education and will be given the potential to achieve great things”. As the headteacher, she says she will “be relentless in her approach to improving outcomes for all students of all abilities and talent”. She believes “parents and students who have done so much to support the school deserve nothing less”. She encourages parents and families to work in partnership with her. “Setting the right tone each and every day about going to school with enthusiasm and pride has a very positive impact on the students as they prepare for the day ahead”. An area she will focus on is continuing to improve students’ attendance by encouraging them to have a sense of purpose, positive self-worth and confidence in themselves as learners. “With support and commitment from parents and families, there are no limits to what students can achieve”. Zara is clear that learning at King Henry School “is not just about academic success, it is also about building independent skills to solve problems, understanding how

to explain an idea or argue a point of view effectively, it is also about making great friends and being supported when life seems more challenging. At King Henry, we offer a strong, core academic curriculum, and place equal value between academic study and specialist training as a valid educational path, equipping our young people with the skills they need and employers want”. Zara will be encouraging various community and student initiatives which put students at the heart of the school community. One such initiative is the ‘Student Leadership Passport’, which provides students with the opportunity to take part in different roles within the school, “giving students a genuine channel through which they can express their ideas and expend their energies,” explains Zara. “This initiative embraces all year groups, all abilities, and all aspects of school life, whether it is as a Student Governor, charity leader, eco leader, subject leader, sports leader, arts leader, school council membership or form captain; everyone has the opportunity to express themselves and play a full part in the life of the school.” “High expectations underpin everything,” she says. “If we get this right, if everyone from every part of the school community raises the bar on what they expect of themselves and each other, then we’ll get the outcomes we are after.” Looking to the future Zara says the focus will be on happy, healthy, focused and committed staff. “I firmly believe that the single most effective way of improving a school is by investing in developing your staff. They set the expectations and agenda for students, who will follow if they believe in what they’re seeing and hearing, as will parents and the rest of the school community. This will make us better and give us concrete foundations for future success.” She will use the skills, professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff team, to ensure that the school becomes the best it can be and that every student gets an excellent experience in their school life. “The school now has the opportunity to carve a positive reputation at the heart of Erith and become an integral part of the area of Bexley”. She also believes “students should leave with happy memories, plenty of friends and a sense of responsibility for their community. We plan to send every student out into the world with an understanding of the way it works and the empathy and drive to make it better, in whatever way they can”. “King Henry School is at a very exciting stage in its growth and development and has an extremely promising future”, states Zara. She believes in building strong links with local Primary Schools; she and intends to visit the schools as soon as possible. “Meeting the children, staff and future parents is important to me. I recognise how hard it can sometimes be when making the decision as to which secondary school to send their child to. I want families to know what a great school we have, and encourage prospective parents and their youngsters to visit, to see for themselves what a positive place of learning King Henry School is for their children”.
