IDE GU ON AT’S WH

for families with primary aged children

Dear Readers has finally arrived - the beginning of the long summer holidays. No more crazy mornings with the stress of getting up, dressed and off to school without being late (in my house certainly...), just long sunny, relaxing days hopefully!

inside this issue....

July Bumper Summer Edition • Issue 107 • 3 July - 3 September 2017

Hayley and Miriam have spent the last few weeks finding all the hundreds of listings that we have published. We’re sorry if we couldn’t publish everything we are sent but the summer magazine is our biggest of the year and with so much going on we simply run out of space. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 4 September.

Have a fantastic summer

Thank you for taking our magazines home, entering our competitions, sending us artwork and all the lovely comments you send us. We will miss you.

Calling all banknote detectives! The Bank of England Museum needs your help this summer to solve the case of the mysterious banknote forger. Could you tell a real banknote from a fake? While you’re at the Museum, there are plenty of attractions to make sure you have a fun family day out including a banknote jigsaw, a roller ball game and the opportunity to take part in some safe cracking. You can even hold the museum’s genuine gold bar, which might take you by surprise – it weighs in at an impressive 13 kilos! Activity sheets are also available for children of all ages, with a small prize for everyone who takes part. Admission and all activities are free. Maize Maze at Stanhill Farm

Stanhill Farm in Dartford is growing their fourth 7.5 acre Maize Maze, which will open on 15 July ready for the summer holidays. Ideal for the kids to run around and lose themselves in for a couple of hours. The maze theme is Star Wars as Stanhill Farm are celebrating 40 years since the launch of the first film, with their own animal based interpretation of the story. The fearsome Imperial cloned army of Corntroopers (all sheep, all called Dolly!) have taken over the maze and are causing no end of problems. Pick up a game card and help a trusty band of rebels find the coordinates to the location of evil Bark Vader and send him back to the doghouse! After you have conquered the maze why not spend time picking some fresh fruit and vegetables straight from the plants on the Pick Your Own farm? Crops include strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, runner beans and sweet corn. Pop in and see the well-stocked onsite Farm Shop which was a finalist in the Kent Life and Kent on Sunday Food and Drink Awards 2013 and 2014. For more information call 01322 669 711 or visit www. stanhillfarm.co.uk. Maze entrance fees apply. Availability of fruit and vegetables is subject to seasonal variations. Enlightened Princesses

Historic Royal Palaces and the Yale Center for British Art have opened a new exhibition at Kensington Palace exploring the lives of three German princesses, Caroline, Augusta and Charlotte, whose marriage into the British royal family placed them at the very heart of 18th century Britain. From advocating the latest scientific and medical advancements to their involvement in charity work, each princess would subtly alter the role women played in the British royal family, with lasting results. To reflect the diverse range of interests pursued by Caroline, Augusta and Charlotte, the exhibition will bring together almost 200 objects owned by the princesses. Personal possessions such as Charlotte’s hand-embroidered needlework pocketbook and pastels of the royal children will be displayed alongside artworks and fine ceramics commissioned from some of the greatest artists and craftsmen of their day, giving a glimpse of the inner lives of the three remarkable women and celebrating the public roles they played in shaping ideas of a national identity. Also taking place at Kensington Palace is the ‘Family Fantastical’. Inspired by the Enlightened Princesses exhibition, the palace’s Orangery Lawn will play host to performances from the English National Ballet, awe-inspiring shows from the Science Museum and a comedy show. The Enlightened Princesses exhibition is taking place until 12 November. The ‘Family Fantastical’ performances will run from Friday 18 August – Sunday 20 August from 12-3pm. Tickets cost £12 for adults and £7 for children. For more information please visit www.hrp.org.uk. Photo credit: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2017

There is a wealth of evidence that shows learning a musical instrument is beneficial for children, not just in building their musical skills but also aiding their cognitive, emotional and social development. Recent research from Dawn Rose from the University of Hertfordshire compared children who took part in regular group school music lessons to children who pursued individual music lessons for the first time that year. The results showed that children who had started individual music lessons developed a better awareness of their ‘aim’ and ‘force’ in relation to their own motor skills as well as improving their ‘fluid intelligence’ – which is the ability to solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns.

All the Arts

All the Arts in their usual form are performing at over 10 local events this summer. The award winning theatre school’s ethos is that children learn through actual performing experience and they provide unparalleled opportunities for local children who attend their hugely successful classes. You can catch them in performances this year at Chislehurst Rocks, The London Youth Games, Sadlers Wells and Eltham Arts Festival to name just a few. They are also celebrating success again after several pupils have won West End Theatre roles including Matilda and Pinocchio as well as TV commercials for Converse, Paramount, Boots & M&S and even a couple of feature film roles. School Principal and former Brookside actress Lucy Morgans told Primary Times, “We are delighted to be able to use our contacts to provide so many amazing opportunities for our children, our casting agency is a free service that we offer to those who attend classes and we are so proud to have such huge successes. We do notice that our pupils’ confidence is boosted dramatically by taking part in regular local and West End performances and we are delighted this year to have taken out around 500 local children to participate in festivals and shows.” The accredited theatre school’s next exciting project is a week long Summer School ‘Beauty and The Beast’ and they are looking for budding young stars to cast in all roles for the production on the final day. She told Primary Times, “The key to Step Up success is ensuring that every child is encouraged to develop their own individual skills in a nurturing and positive atmosphere. Many children have made potentially lifelong friends as a result of their time at Step Up.” Step Up successes include the winners of Comic Relief Does Glee Club on BBC1 and children in West End shows including ‘Lion King’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Matilda’. Step Up has also had many successes in the pop industry and has developed some fine singers over the years. Step Up is for any child aged 4-18 years. Branches include Colfe’s School, running on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm and on Sundays from 10am to 1pm.You can attend a free trial any weekend in term time. No need to book. Hurrah for the Cha Cha Cha

Ballroom dancing is in. TV shows like ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ have put this fantastic dance genre back on the map. Children and adults are taking to the floor to learn how to Waltz, Quickstep, Rumba and Jive like never before. The benefits are that Ballroom dance is uplifting and fun, while listening to some great music. It’s a brilliant way to meet new people and it encourages team work and communication skills that can lead to wonderful friendships forming. The health benefits are endless. It improves posture and body alignment, strengthens core muscles and increases flexibility and agility. It’s also great for cardiovascular health and can aid weight loss. Dancing also improves mental acuity, self-confidence and social skills. If you’ve ever watched ‘Strictly’ and thought that you’d love to do that or that you’d love your children to have a go, now is your chance. Kerry On Dancing is a Ballroom and Latin American Dance School based in South East London. The school offers classes for all ages and level of dancer. The School is run by Kerry Tite who is a qualified ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) teacher with a successful competitive dance background. Once the basics are understood pupils can progress to taking ISTD dance examinations and can also be entered into ISTD Medallist competitions if they wish.

Local Young Writer Celebrated

A 7 year old from West Wickham has been named a regional winner in the National Young Writers’ Award. Lucy Kendall from Hawes Down Infant School fought off tough competition from children all over the region with her story. The competition, organised by tuition provider, Explore Learning, tasked children with writing a 500 word story set in 2017 in line with this year’s theme, ‘The Future’. Robots, teleports and rockets featured in many stories and the

impressive entries were judged by TV presenter and adventurer, Steve Backshall. Over 10,000 children from all over the UK entered in an effort to win a trip to Disneyland Paris and £500 worth of books for their school. As the regional winner, Lucy will receive a stationary prize bundle, a certificate to celebrate her story and personalised feedback from Explore Learning. She’s also in the running to be the overall winner – National Young Writer of the Year – which will be announced by Steve in a special school assembly. Explore Learning provides English and maths tuition to children aged 4 to 14, with 126 centres located across the country. They ran a number of creative writing workshops in libraries and schools up and down the country throughout the competition. Find out more at www.explorelearning.co.uk.

children learned more about what they can achieve, and developed an understanding of the health benefits of participating in sport. The visiting schools had access to Blackheath High’s facilities, received expert coaching (including from Amanda Newton, England Netball Coach and Blackheath High PE teacher) and learned the importance of Speed, Agility and Quickness in all sports. The day was funded by HSBC who provided a generous grant as part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) and HSBC Partnership Funding scheme for GDST schools to develop partnerships with local maintained schools. Mrs Carol Chandler-Thompson, Head of Blackheath High School, told Primary Times, “We were delighted to host this Sports Partnership Day with our neighbouring primary schools. Sport is an integral part of school life at Blackheath High and we encourage our students to develop a lifelong love of exercise.” For more information about Blackheath High School, please visit www.blackheathhighschool.gdst.net.

Dear Prospective Beths student, I am writing to tell you about Beths Grammar School. I understand that moving to a new school is never easy. We at Beths believe we can help you make that important transition from primary school. Whilst we still focus on academic achievement, more importantly, we focus on you as an individual. We want you to have the courage to take risks and learn from your mistakes. Our teachers will challenge you academically but they will work with you to make sure you get the right level of support to realise your potential. At Beths you have a voice and the School Council plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the School. Beths is renowned for its strength in Mathematics, Technology and the Sciences. Beths also has a rich Arts Culture and an impressive range of extra-curricular workshops and educational visits. As a student here, you will have the opportunity to learn Chinese and learn about the Chinese culture as well as French, German and Spanish. Sports are hugely popular at Beths too, with the students currently holding national titles in two team sports - Football (U14) and Rugby (U15). With state of the art facilities at your disposal and a picturesque setting, Beths has so much to offer you. The only limiting factor at Beths is the number of hours in the day. More and more students are extending the day to take advantage of the vast number of clubs and activities that go on before school, through lunchtimes and long into the evening and weekends. There is truly something for everyone. It is hard to pinpoint what makes Beths special but it was summed up during the School’s most recent Ofsted report where it was noted that it’s “cool to learn at Beths”. You can’t be any clearer than that. And finally, I very much look forward to meeting and welcoming you into the School. Kind regards,

Combat Summer Learning Loss

Are you still deciding whether to send your child to summer school this holiday? Take your child along to a Leaders are Readers Summer School to enhance their English and Maths skills over the break and make sure they go back to school prepared for the next year. This can be a big help when learning challenging topics which might have been tough to handle during regular school with many other subjects competing for lesson and homework time. With the help of a magic goat, Malcolm is transformed into a whole series of animals. He thinks differently, speaks differently and eats differently. But will he end up the same as he was before? Sometimes the hardest thing to become is yourself. We have ten signed copies of this hilarious new book for lucky Primary Times readers to win. For your chance to be a winner, tell us what magical animal helps Malcolm transform. For entry details see below.

Win the Funniest Books in Children’s Literature

Competitions

Competitions Michael Rosen – children’s novelist, poet and former Children’s Laureate – recently announced the shortlist for the 2017 Scholastic Laugh Out Loud Awards (The Lollies) which celebrate the funniest children’s books. Michael Rosen and his judging panel were tasked with making the selected shortlist from over 130 books submitted by children’s publishers. The Lollies are awarded in three categories: Best Laugh Out Loud Picture Book, Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 6-8s and Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 9-13s. Head online to discover the shortlisted books and crack up as you decide your favourite. The winning book in each category will be decided solely by children’s votes, with schools and parents encouraged to help kids get involved and vote via the Lollies website, www.scholastic.co.uk/lollies, or via the Scholastic channel on the PopJam app. For your chance to win all the books in the age 6-8 shortlist, just tell us your favourite book.
