Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System

Have you ever wanted to know more about the solar system we live in? Are you a budding astronaut trying to pick which planet to go to first? Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System is the perfect guide to the universe we live in. Primary Times was lucky enough to speak to Dr Maggie and pick her brains about space.

What can readers expect from your book? Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System allows readers to take an epic journey that no human or space probe has ever made. It’s a guided tour through the solar system, exploring all the wonderful highlights out there, such as the largest mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons on Mars, which is nearly two and a half times the height of Mount Everest. There are so many amazing things to see in outer space and with this book you can visit them all.

What made you first interested in space? It was the Moon landing that had the biggest impact on me. I was born during a fantastically exciting time for space exploration and heard about it a lot as I was growing up.

What’s your favourite planet? They’d all be amazing to visit, but the one I would like to go to the most is Mars. Mars is smaller than Earth but we know that it used to have liquid water running over its surface. I would love to go to investigate why the planet changed so much and find out what happened to the water.

Did you ever want to be an astronaut? Yes! I have wanted to go into space ever since I was a small child and I would still love to today.

Do you think aliens exist? If you look out into the night sky, you can see thousands of stars. Each one of those stars is a sun like ours, and many of them sit at the heart of a solar system just like ours. We call the planets that orbit around these distant stars ‘exoplanets’ and we are discovering more and more all the time. Our galaxy, known as the Milky Way, contains around 300 billion stars, that means there are hundreds of billions of planets. We also think that there are around 100 billion galaxies in the universe. That is a mind boggling number of planets. With all these planets out there in the universe, it seems unlikely that life would have only occurred here on Earth. Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System by Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock and illustrated by Chelen Ecija is out now, in hardback, priced £12.99 (Buster Books) Photo credit: Lovelight Photography 4

The Thames is Full of Life The River Thames may look like murky water, but it is in fact thriving with life, home to many amazing animals born and raised in the river. Seals, porpoises, eels and seahorses, to name a few, all call the river their home. The tidal Thames runs from Teddington Lock, in the west of London, to Gravesend and into the North Sea. It is home to more than 100 fish species, many of which are commercially and ecologically important. A number of these marine species use the Thames at different times of their life cycle – some as a nursery habitat when they are juveniles and as a safe haven to spawn (lay eggs) when they mature and some as a pathway between freshwater habitats and the open seas – making this area absolutely vital to the success of UK fish species and their conservation. ZSL, the Zoological Society of London, is working to ensure the river stays full of life. Together with partners and volunteers they are making great progress. From being declared biologically dead in the 1950s, the River Thames is now a hub of life thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. Photo credit: Graham Mee SE RSPB

Tasty Eyeballs Recipe!

These white chocolate covered little cakes are eye-poppingly good. The easiest way to make them is with a cakepop mould, which you can pick up from stores or online.

Ingredients (makes approx. 20 eyeballs) For the cake 70g superfine caster sugar 70g softened butter A few drops of vanilla extract 2 eggs 70g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder Cake-pop mould For the decoration Wooden skewers 200g white candy melts/ white chocolate Blue, green, red, and black food colouring gel Horrid hint: if you

don’t have a cake-pop mould, you can bake the cake in a normal pan, break the cake into crumbs then roll with buttercream into balls.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Using a

wooden spoon, cream the butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl. Add the vanilla extract, then slowly beat in the eggs. Fold in the flour and baking powder.

2. Grease your cake-pop mould with butter. Use a teaspoon to add the mixture to the bottom of the mould, filling it to the top. Place the other side of the mould on top. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

3. With an adult’s help, put the cake pops in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Allow to cool a little, then remove the top of the mould and release each cake pop onto a cooling rack. Leave until completely cool. 4. Push a wooden skewer into each cake

pop. Place the candy melts or chocolate in a microwavable bowl and heat in 30 second blasts in the microwave until melted. Dip and roll the cooled cake pops in the candy or spoon it over them until they are nicely coated.

5. Put the skewers upright and leave to

completely set. If you use white chocolate it may take a bit longer to set.

6. Dip a paintbrush into the blue or green food

coloring and paint a circle onto the cake pops. You could also paint some brown if you like. Leave to dry for about an hour. You may need to do more than one coat to get a good effect. Horrid hint: You could use royal icing instead to cover the eyeballs. Dip them in the same way and allow to harden before painting on the food coloring.

7. Add a black pupil with black food coloring, then some fine red veins. Remove from the skewer to finish. For this and plenty more scarily yummy recipes and to find some horribly fun craft activities see The Horrible Craft Book by Laura Minter and Tia Williams, available online and from all good bookshops for £12.99. Thanks to Gill for testing out the recipe for our office too - they were delicious! 14 Oct - 24 Nov ‘19

Happy Halloween and More Days Out...

Virtual Reality Underwater Experience

Graham Owen, Director of Phileas Fogg, told Primary Times, “We are offering three Halloween experiences for families to enjoy safely. From the slightly scary to some gory facts, there’s fun for everyone with plenty of sweets topping the encounters off.”

Londoners can dive beneath the surface of the River Thames to see sharks, seals and eels this autumn without even getting their hair wet, as international conservation charity ZSL launches a brand-new virtual reality experience at London Bridge City.

These daytime activities will take place every day until 3 November and can be booked online at www.phileasfoggsworldofadventures.co.uk.

More than fifty years after being declared ‘biologically dead’ the River Thames is now one of London’s best kept wildlife secrets. This virtual reality experience is designed to show Londoners more. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, an astonishing 120 fish species now call the Thames home. Seals, seahorses and oyster live in the Thames, alongside critically endangered European eels and smelt (a very small fish, which smells of cucumber). Many of these amazing species are born and nurtured in the river, before they venture out into the ocean. Users will stand on the bank of the River while looking through a custom-made view finder to take a deep dive into the River Thames, making the invisible, visible. Guided by narration from Good Morning Britain’s broadcast meteorologist Laura Tobin, users will learn about the distinctive features of the river’s wildlife as they explore. ZSL’s Thames Virtual Reality Experience is free and open to all. The public can also donate to ZSL’s conservation work after taking part in the experience. For more information, visit www.zsl.org. Safe Trick or Treating in Brighton this Halloween For children, Halloween is the one day in the year when they can dress up as a ghoul and receive free sweets. However, knowing who they can safely trick-or-treat can be a source of worry. Why not plan a trip to Brighton where Phileas Fogg’s World of Adventures in Brighton is hosting three special, family-friendly, Halloween activities through its series of four-dimensional themed sets. This will ensure children can enjoy the occasion, and ease the minds of parents. Trick – have a frightening tour of dark and smoky Victorian London. The 30-minute experience is a spooky, gruesome and ghoulish walk through the capital’s streets. Suitable for children from eight years old, it costs £12.50 per person. Treat - Travel from Japan, on-board a ship, take a stint in jail, visit the wild west, travel through a vortex and end in the royal throne room finding treats along the way. Suitable for children age three up, the experience lasts 40 minutes and costs £12.50 per person. Horrible Mysteries – Board a train and take a trip through Venice, Egypt, the jungle and on to India. On the trip you will touch and smell the world of mysteries and learn fun gruesome facts from a plague doctor in Venice through to a mummification in an Egyptian tomb. The attraction is suitable for children from five years old, lasts 40 minutes and costs £9.95 per person. 14
