We are so glad to be back after such a long time of not printing. When we last published a magazine, back in March, we had no idea that we wouldn’t publish another one until now. What a difficult and stressful time it’s been for everyone. I really hope that life returns to normal soon. Thank you so much to all the school staff for helping to hand out Primary Times this month. We’ve worked really hard to be able to publish this issue. Thank you to all our staff, advertisers, suppliers and schools who have supported us. Our magazines were delivered wrapped in protective bags and packed in cartons so thank you to our printers and distributors too for taking such care. September is when we publish our comprehensive Choosing your New School feature, designed to help Year 5 and Year 6 pupils decide on which secondary school to choose. Some schools are hoping to hold open days at the schools while others are going to hold virtual open days. (Some schools didn’t know at the time of us going to press.) We haven’t been able to publish our open day tables this year, but we have included a table of secondary schools so do check when and how they are organising their open days this year. Many businesses have been hit very hard with the lockdown and sadly not every business will survive. Now that times are hopefully getting a little easier do try and support your local businesses. They really need you. Stay safe and well.

Complementary Education: Why Do It?

A Safe Return to Jigsaw Performing Arts Jigsaw Arts celebrated 25 years this summer, but they certainly didn’t expect to have the year we have had! But they are delighted to be back doing what they love doing, after a challenging few months. Health and safety have always been their number one priority, but they have further enhanced procedures in all their schools now, ready for a return this autumn. They ran a hugely successful trial of these new systems in one school during the summer, to ensure that they created a safe environment, whilst still providing a fun and creative outlet for students. Sessions are designed to develop children’s confidence, focus and social skills from an early age, giving them a head start in life. Performing arts is great for wellbeing and happiness. Dance really gets bodies moving, excellent for aerobic fitness and co-ordination. Learning to use breath and voice to make a great sound in singing is exhilarating and improves the speaking voice. Drama combines movement and voice as well as lots of teamwork and thinking on your feet which builds confidence, creativity and self-esteem. There is nothing better than performing arts to connect and bring people together. It’s also lots of fun and lots of laughs - just what we need right now! For more information or to book a two-week trial, search for your nearest school on their website www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk.

Saturday schools and extra tuition centres are providing a bridge for many parents and pupils, to make possible their academic goals that are beyond existing mainstream provision. Parents are investing in extra education to plug learning gaps, smooth out differences in standards of teaching and resources between schools, provide extra practice in specific ‘problem’ subject areas and prepare for entrance exams to selective schools. Clarssroom help to develop positive study habits and attitude to learning. Their programmes (reading, mathematics and English) and teaching methods provide pupils with opportunities to develop self-confidence, subject matter competence and higher aspirations for themselves. Tutors who teach at Clarssroom Saturday schools love teaching there for several reasons. It’s often calmer and much less formal. With smaller class sizes, teachers tend to be more relaxed themselves. Children enjoy an experience more akin to an independent school. Regular parent-tutor meetings establish great parent-school partnerships, keeping parents informed and enabling them to play a very hands-on role in their child’s education. Call Clarssroom on 020 3991 6110 or 07762 709 512 now for further information or to book a trial session. You can also enrol your child into Saturday school by emailing info@lareducation.com or visiting the website www.clarssroom.co.uk.

Lauren Child Illustrates her Hero Pippi Longstocking

Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking Goes Aboard was first published in Sweden in 1946 and has remained a classic all over the world. Now, the former Children’s Laureate is bringing the indomitable Pippi to a new generation of fans. Known and loved the world over as the creator of some equally feisty girls - notably Clarice Bean, Ruby Redfort and Lola from Charlie and Lola, Lauren Child has brought her trade-mark illustration style and flair to this beautiful new edition of Pippi Longstocking. Pippi counts amongst her fans Michelle Obama, Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Lady Gaga and Cerys Matthews. Just like her friends Tommy and Annika, they and millions of readers of all ages from across the world, have been charmed by her free-thinking personality and her courageous and generous spirit. From her home at Villa Villekula, where she lives with her horse, a monkey and a big suitcase of gold coins, nine-year old Pippi spends her days arranging adventures to enjoy with her neighbours, Annika and Tommy, or entertaining everyone she meets with her outrageous stories. She thinks nothing of wrestling a circus strongman, dancing a polka with burglars or tugging a bull’s tail. This gift edition of Pippi Longstocking Goes Aboard by Astrid Lindgren, illustrated by Lauren Child is published by Oxford University Press on 3 October, at a hardback price of £20.

Thank You, Tony!

Five year-old Tony is learning how to use his first ever pair of prosthetic legs, through a pledge to walk 10k in 30 days to raise funds for Evelina London. Tony’s parents, Paula and Mark, expected him to raise £500. But, with the whole nation behind him, he has raised over £1,500,000 in total for the hospital that has looked after him since he was just five weeks old. Amazed by Captain Tom’s walking frame fundraiser, and inspired to see someone that ‘looks like me’, Tony wanted to start a challenge of his own. “The community has been absolutely fantastic,” said dad, Mark. Mum Paula added, “Every day the walk is taking longer and longer because more people are coming out to watch him and cheer him on.”

Five Ways to get Children out of their Shell

As children prepare to go back to school after months of lockdown, Anna Fiorentini, founder of the award-winning theatre school shared some tips with us on how to increase their confidence: 1. Praise – often we hand out general praise for a good effort or piece of art but rarely think about what it is we’re praising. Be specific and recognise the individual effort that has gone into something. Don’t overdo your praise, reserve it for when it really means something. 2. Model self-confidence – if you’re looking to help your child overcome shyness, show them how it’s done. Be the role model they can copy and get tips from. 3. Small steps – you’re not expecting your child to take to the stage immediately. Don’t push for giant leaps, small steps are what it takes to get there. 4. Raise a resilient child – things will go wrong and your child will fail sometimes but it’s how they deal with it that counts. Show your child how to bounce back and keep trying. Resilience is a skill that will come in useful throughout their life. 5. Encourage a wide range of interests – being the best at one thing is great but having a wide range of interests and hobbies will help your child to see that they’re capable of lots more than they thought. To apply for a place at the part-time Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School, for 4 – 18 year olds please visit www.annafiorentini. com. Don’t delay – places are limited due to social distancing. Of course adults can be just as shy if not more so. Stage & the City offers after work performing arts classes for adults who wish to have fun and increase their confidence. Visit www.stageandthecity.com for more information. Photo credit: Michael Bourke

Choosing your New School

Choosing your Child’s Secondary School

It’s been a strange year – there’s an understatement if ever there was one. However, some things still have to happen and choosing your child’s secondary school is one of those. If your child is in Year 6, you still need to submit your application by the end of October. If they’re in Year 5, it’s also good to get your ideas together now. Choosing a secondary school may at first appear to be a daunting and complicated decision faced by parents. However it doesn’t need to be. Although it’s important and with so many schools to choose from, with so many variables and specialisations, there are ways to make the process of finding the best school for your child easier. We have lots of ideas here as well as a table of local school websites to help you. Schools are telling you about themselves in different ways. Some are still holding open days but numbers are limited to maintain safe social distancing and booking is almost always required. So make sure that you register nice and early so as not to miss out. Others are doing virtual open days but numbers may still be limited and attendance and appointments to speak online to staff may still need to be booked so don’t leave it too long.

At Plumstead Manor School they pride themselves on their transition programme to welcome Year 7 students. The school has a dedicated team of staff responsible for making sure that students are settled, stretched and challenged from the moment they join the school and is the basis on which pupils open up an extensive range of opportunities for them to learn, grow and succeed. Students can learn in an environment where their peers and their parents value education for its own sake, where teachers understand how to challenge and where the range of extra-curricular activities opens up new worlds and possibilities. The school’s arts education gives students confidence when they enter school, dance being particularly popular, enabling girls to develop a positive self-image and a grounded sense of self, while the science and technology provision enables large numbers to pursue careers in science, computing and medicine. With such an education, girls have a duty to grow into young women who desire to improve the world for others. As leaders of the future they learn to give and the value of service. Townley Grammar School has been recognised with multiple awards including being “Highly Commended” by the DFE in the National Character Education Awards and are recipients of the Mayor of London’s Excellence in Music Award. Townley students have been winners of the National Articulation Award, the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge Grand Final and the Bexley Young Musician of the Year Award to name but a few. Their latest Ofsted report graded Townley as ‘Outstanding’ with comments such as “Excellent care and support for all students”, “Lessons that are rich in subject content, challenging and fun” and “Behaviour is impeccable”.

With impressive facilities that include 17 acres including Sports Fields, a full working theatre, dance and drama studios, a recording studio and now a state of the art computing facility and new dining space, Townley has so much to offer. Bike to School Week

Sustrans have teamed up with the Bikeability Trust to invite schools across the UK to take part in this year’s Bike to School Week. The event runs from 28 September to 2 October and celebrates the amazing benefits that an active school run can bring. Organised by Sustrans in partnership with the Bikeability Trust, Bike to School Week celebrates cycling to school and the benefits of travelling actively for children. Evidence suggests that the change to daily travel habits during the Covid-19 lockdown resulted in more people cycling than before. However, the latest figures show that only 2% of primary school children in England currently travel to school by cycle. Recently released guidance from the Department for Education shows that at least 50% of journeys to school of two miles or less need to be walked or cycled in order to allow space for those on public transport who need to travel further. This is due to the current physical distancing restrictions on public transport. Cycle training, such as Bikeability, can help pupils cycle safely and confidently on the road. To support schools, there are a range of resources available for teachers. These include school posters, a 5-day pack of daily activities to be completed in class and a video guide with simple practices to check your bike is safe to ride. These activities aim to inspire pupils to think about their journeys to school, understand the benefits of active travel, and consider the causes and effects of air pollution, as they return to school life. Teachers can also access the Bikeability Trust’s ‘Tools for Schools’ assets, a toolbox of exciting, curriculum-linked resources for Early Years, and Key Stages 1 and 2. Photo credit: Chris Foster

Discover St Dunstan’s

St Dunstan’s College, Catford has taken the decision that open events planned for September to November can no longer go ahead in their usual format following the Coronavirus pandemic. Last year, the College welcomed more than 2,000 individuals to St Dunstan’s across six major events; however, the safety of staff, pupils and visiting families is paramount. The College is delighted to announce that it will be launching a series of smaller ‘Discover St Dunstan’s’ events that will allow prospective families to visit the site safely and following social distancing guidelines. During the visit, families will have an opportunity to speak to the leadership team, including the headmaster, Mr Nicholas Hewlett, and have a guided tour to see the College’s facilities. There will also be a series of virtual events with the leadership team for prospective families to join from the comfort of their home. Speaking about the new format, Director of Marketing, Admissions and Development, Mrs Isabelle Blake-James told Primary Times, “We are delighted to be able to still offer prospective families a chance to visit the College site and experience a taste of life at St Dunstan’s. We are busy planning the new look open events and can’t wait to share with prospective families. Open events planned for the autumn come at an exciting time for St Dunstan’s, as in September 2021 a new Junior School building, STEM Centre and Sixth Form Centre will open. The new facilities will include state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, new outdoor learning spaces and a Sixth Form café. The developments will also include a performing arts centre and a new outdoor space for pupils, which they have voted to call ‘The Plaza’.” Watch out for more details about the ‘Discover St Dunstan’s’ on their website at www.stdunstans.org.uk.

Blackheath High School Exceeds ‘Year Of Promise’ Environmental Pledge Target

Blackheath High School has exceeded the 140 environmental pledges set to mark the school’s 140th anniversary just six months since the initiative launched. Designating 2020 as its ‘Year of Promise’, Blackheath High School committed to making 140 environmental pledges throughout the year. The pledges range from bamboo bicycle making workshops to the study of ocean plastics. These pledges form the cornerstone of Blackheath High’s wider sustainability drive encouraging students to consider their impact on the environment. In working towards a sustainable environment, an area their students feel passionate about, Blackheath High has implemented a number of innovative activities to teach students how creative solutions to global challenges can be. Inspired by their location alongside the National Maritime Museum and the River Thames, Blackheath High has introduced a variety of pledges which focus on reducing the impact of human activity on the world’s rivers and oceans. One such pledge has seen Blackheath High adopt the study of ocean plastics to the curriculum. Partnering with Common Seas, the school launched an Oceans Plastics Academy where pupils learn about the impact of ocean plastics and assess the social, environmental and economic costs. Each individual and collective pledge has been designed to preserve, improve and positively contribute to the national environment. These include not buying into fast fashion, not using single use plastic, buying local food produce, prioritising home/business recycling and reducing food waste. Blackheath High School has been shortlisted for ‘Girls School of the Year’ and ‘Prep School of the Year’ for Independent School Parent Magazine’s Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2020. Blackheath High School is rated ‘Excellent in all areas’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. For more details on Blackheath High School please visit www.blackheathhighschool.gdst.net. 16

Babington House School Inspiring Teachers, Inspiring Children

Demand for places at private schools has jumped by as much as 30% because parents of state-educated children fear they have fallen behind during lockdown. At Babington, where pupils have logged in daily for registration and benefited from a full curriculum of live online lessons and activities, they have certainly seen an increase in admissions enquiries. The digital divide between the state and private school sector has been more evident during lockdown and smaller class sizes have made it easier to provide online learning. Babington is an excellent school achieving amazing results and inspiring pupils from the Sixth Form right down to the Nursery. The school has just over 420 pupils from 3 to 18, with classes of no more than 20 children and is co-educational throughout. Headmaster, Tim Lello told Primary Times, “Our commitment to provide an academic and well-rounded education, tailored to the needs of our pupils is really paying off. Our pupils and parents have been rightly impressed by the excellent and full programme of on-line lessons and support we have provided during the lockdown and we are achieving excellent results.” See for yourself at www.babingtonhouse.com. Colfe’s Lockdown Spirit

From daily virtual lessons to fundraising for the NHS – pupils, staff and parents at Colfe’s School in Lee pulled together in incredible ways during the COVID-19 lockdown. When the summer term began earlier this year, the school opened its doors only for the children of key workers critical to the response of the pandemic while the remainder of Colfe’s pupils moved to learning from home. All teaching and support staff worked tirelessly to ensure lessons for pupils from Reception to Year 13 could be delivered virtually. Pupils were able to participate in daily live lessons via Microsoft Teams as well as receiving continued pastoral support and guidance on how to keep fit and active at home. Everyone responded with the enthusiasm and resilience Colfe’s is known for.As one Junior School parent commented,“the online learning is very impressive and helps the children to focus at home. The weekly reading group where pupils get the chance to talk to their teachers makes the children feel cared for. Overall we are really happy with how the school is dealing with the crisis.” The school community also found some impressive ways to show their appreciation and support for local NHS staff and key workers. Here is just a few of their achievements: • Junior School pupils produced creative Easter messages and rainbow artwork which were displayed in staff rooms across Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital • Year 9 pupils and parents raised nearly £600 to buy tea, coffee and much-needed snacks for NHS staff at Darenth Valley Hospital • Year 12 student,Alice, completed a marathon by running 6k every day for a week – raising over £700 for NHS Charities Together • Conor,Year 13 also ran a marathon… in his back garden! Conor was due to run the Manchester Marathon on 9 April but after it was cancelled he did an astonishing 1,200 laps of his garden raising a fantastic £215

• Year 13 student, Frank and Old Colfeian Ben together raised over £1,000 for the NHS by shaving off their hair • Spencer Drury, Director of Sixth Form, delivered safety goggles donated by the school’s Physics Department to the Fairfield Practice in Charlton and to the Eltham Safer Neighbourhood Team Headmaster Richard Russell told Primary Times,“It was heartening to see such exceptional efforts across Colfe’s during such a challenging time.Whilst teaching staff went over and above to provide virtual lessons; also crucial to the success of our home learning programme was the tenacity of pupils and the parents who so actively encouraged them.“

Harris Academy Beckenham

‘The school’s culture of aspiration and ambition is clearly demonstrated in classes.Teachers are aspirational for their pupils and set high expectations for them. Pupils respond positively. They are determined to do their best and are confident about meeting ambitious targets set by their teachers.’ (OFSTED 2017) Harris Academy Beckenham is proud to have been oversubscribed year after year, and this is in part to its unique ethos and excellent standing in the local community. At the heart of what they do are their 4Rs: Resilience, Reflectiveness, Resourcefulness and Reciprocity. They believe that these learning attitudes will service their students well as they develop into adulthood, as they are attributes which not only secure an excellent academic outcome, but enhance the interpersonal skills and sense of community responsibility that is crucial to be an effective and empathetic citizen. They pride themselves on offering an imaginative and challenging learning experience for students, offering opportunities which are unique and memorable. Harnessing students’ creativity is an essential part of learning, and innovation days scheduled throughout the year provide invaluable occasions for students to thrive. They take every opportunity to use London as a resource with trips to theatres, museums, specialist events to broaden students’ cultural capital, and have annual trips to Europe, including a ski

St Paul’s Academy

St Paul’s Academy is unique in that they welcome students from the Catholic faith and from the local neighbourhood. St Paul’s is an inclusive academy that celebrates all aspects of diversity. Care and compassion are central to the way they treat one another and as a community, they have high expectations of all that these young people can achieve. Academy specialisms are Sport and Enterprise. Their entrepreneurial young people donate all the money they raise to charity. In fact, as a community St Paul’s has raised over £220,000 for a wide range of charities since becoming an Academy. The other specialism, Sport, is also intrinsic to the success of the school. Sporting activities build confidence and leadership in young people and teach that ‘when we strive, we grow in resilience; we can succeed’. Many of subject results are well above the national average, both in traditional subjects as well as vocational. St Paul’s aim to make opportunities for all students regardless of ability and although they have so many high achievers (with many students going to Russell Group universities or Oxbridge) St Paul’s is a truly inclusive school. This can also be seen in the wide variety of activities that take place beyond the classroom which is an integral part of all children becoming thoughtful and responsible citizens.
