World Book Day is the registered charity behind the world’s biggest annual celebration of children’s books, with a mission to offer every child and young person the opportunity to read and love books. It is sponsored by National Book Tokens and supported generously each year by the publishing industry, book trade, authors and illustrators. Every year, with a host of publishers, World Book Day curates a list of bespoke £1 books for children and young people across the UK and Ireland, which they can choose for

free at their local bookshop or supermarket using their £1 World Book Day book token. This year’s list of £1 books is the most diverse to date and packed with best-selling authors and illustrators. International bestseller Anthony Horowitz returns to the secret world of MI6 with new classified files from Alex Rider. Onjali Q Raúf, founder of Making Herstory and multiaward-winning author of The Boy at the Back of the Class, shares The Day We Met the Queen. For older readers there is empowering new non-fiction from author of You Are Awesome, award-winning journalist and former Olympian, Matthew Syed. The Kissing Booth (one of Netflix’s most successful films of 2018) continues in The Kissing Booth: Road Trip! by Beth Reekles, and Split, a powerful new story by the author of I Am Thunder and winner of the Branford Boase award, Muhammad Khan, will also be available. Share a Story is the theme at the heart of a three year World Book Day campaign, encouraging parents and carers to go beyond dressing up to read and share stories with their children for ten minutes every day. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future. World Book Day aims to inspire new reading habits for adults and children, underlining just how important this shared time is. The organisation is bringing together some of the most influential people in the country - from celebrities and TV presenters, to politicians and sports stars - to promote reading for pleasure and asking them to #ShareaStory on 5 March. The day also sees children bringing books to life through an array of organised events and activities in schools, bookshops, libraries and at home. World Book Day will be taking place on the 5 March. Leeds Castle BIG Story Writing Challenge
Children all over the UK aged 5-13 are invited to join in Leeds Castle’s BIG Story Writing Challenge by writing a short story inspired by the theme of ‘One Golden Day’. To enter the competition, you’ll need to be aged either between 5 and 9 or 10 and 13. Put on your royal thinking crowns and use this golden theme to inspire you to write about anything at all, with a unique title – the more imaginative the better! Your story could be set in the past, present or future and can include anything or anyone fictional or real!
Clare Balding, the official honorary judge for the challenge, shared with Primary Times her top five story writing tips: 1. Aim for a brilliant first line. Make sure the first sentence hints at what the story is all about, and make it exciting from the very first word. 2. Be as adventurous as you can with your storyline. Try to be original - allow your imagination to run free. 3.You’re limited to 900 words but that’s an awful lot. Don’t worry if you don’t make even close to 900; sometimes less is more. Part of the reader’s enjoyment is building their own picture from the clever clues you provide. 4. Don’t be afraid to rewrite. If you’re stuck, just write anything down and you can go back over it later. Think of the rewrite as an opportunity to polish and polish until the words gleam on the page. 5. Enjoy it - writing a story is just as fun (if not more so) as reading one.You get to completely control the plot, invent your characters, and decide the ending. Good luck! Stories should be an original work of fiction using no more than 900 words. Writers have until 12noon on 6 March to submit their stories. Entries must be submitted by an adult (parent/ guardian or teacher) on behalf of the child, and with parental consent. Twenty talented finalists are invited to join Clare Balding in the Castle for the Grand Awards Ceremony on 29 May. The overall winners from each age group will be announced on this very special day. The winning story from each category will win a stay at Knight’s Glamping, tickets to the Fireworks Spectacular 2020, a hamper of fun prizes and the full collection of Clare Balding’s children’s books. The winning stories will be published globally on Fonetti’s app.You could become a published author if you win the BIG Story Writing Challenge. For further information and tips, see a video of Clare Balding speaking about the BIG Story Writing Challenge at

Three siblings from Erith, who took on a 2.62 mile Mini Marathon for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, raised more than £1,000 in sponsorship! Zachary, Dolcie and Lillia took part in the 2019 Mini Marathon to raise money in memory of their beloved nanny Gill, who spent time at the Abbey Wood based hospice. The children also wanted to raise money so that other local families could benefit from the special care and support given by the Hospice. In 2019, Hospice nurses arranged for Gill and her family to have one last trip to the seaside together which helped create some truly special memories. The family told us, “We loved running the Mini Marathon. The whole day was so much fun and we all loved the fact that we got a medal and a goody bag at the end which we all took into school to show in assembly.” The 2.62 mile sponsored fun run is a running event purely aimed at children aged between 5 and 16 years old, although children aged between 5 and 7 years old must run with an adult. Since it first started in 2013 almost £400,000 has been raised by local children! The Mini Marathon starts from Royal Greenwich Park’s famous bandstand, with children running 2.62 miles around a fully marshalled route in the park. Registration is now live at www.communityhospice.org.uk

Nick Sharratt Primary Times teams up with renowned illustrator, Nick Sharratt, to show the wonders of stretching a child’s imagination through drawing
Nick Sharratt is the artist behind hundreds of beloved children’s book characters created by authors including Jacqueline Wilson, Julia Donaldson, Jeremy Strong, as well as timeless fairy-tale characters and characters of his own creation – his personal favourites being Timothy Pope and his dad in ‘Shark in the Park’. As an advocate of creative expression, Nick has always had a passion for drawing. “I’ve loved making pictures for as long as I can remember. It always felt incredibly natural and enjoyable for me. I was the artist of the class at school, and
Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE SOUTH EAST LONDON FEBRUARY 2020.indd 5
I was very happy with that role!” Whether it was for school or a competition he’d found on a box of cereal, Nick took drawing seriously and encourages other children to do the same. “Young children are brilliant at picture-making, but they can quickly become self – conscious about it. I think everyone has the potential to draw. It’s a brilliant activity to do; it involves all kinds of thought processes, and as with everything, you have to work at it if you want to improve. I used to be a perfectionist and start a drawing, do a few lines, then turn the page and start again. I’d go through a whole pad that way! But I taught myself to complete my pictures and even if the drawing was not quite what I’d expected, it gave me a sense of achievement.” Starting out as a magazine illustrator, Nick has now illustrated over a hundred books and written more than fifty of his own. But, how does he do it? “By the time I’ve read the manuscript, I’ve got a clear idea of what the character will look like as it seeps into the story. When I’m working with Jacqueline (Wilson), I just try and create a visual interpretation from Jacky’s description. There will always be mentions of the character’s size, hair, dressing style etc within the story. I spend a lot of time thinking about hairstyles for my characters, as hair can really reflect the character’s nature.” Having achieved his childhood aspiration of
becoming a professional artist, Nick encourages children to find joy in art too. “It’s so important to find time for drawing and story-telling at a young age, as more than anything else it’s fun! It’s a fabulous way to stretch your imagination as a child. “When I used to go into schools it was brilliant to see a classroom with art on the walls. I think it’s good for children to be shown how to draw things by their parents or teachers or via YouTube. There are lots of videos demonstrating how to draw a character sharing top tips such as starting with the shape of the face. Group drawing activities are also fantastic, where everyone contributes to a picture so it’s a team effort.” Illustrations in books are a great way to grip the reader and create a memorable story. “When I think of the books I had as a child, the words are a bit hazy but the pictures come back sharply in my memory. Children interact with visual images in a really direct and intense way and it’s amazing to think that my illustrations might be enjoyed like that.” Nick’s top tip for aspiring artists is simple, keep drawing! Discover more of Nick’s tips and tricks from his YouTube films and book ‘How to Draw the world of Jacqueline Wilson’ (Random House Children’s Books) and keep up to date with his latest books at www.nicksharratt.com

Greenwich Theatre Half Term Family Programme
Following an amazing run of Sleeping Beauty over the festive season, proving that Greenwich Theatre remains one of the country’s finest producers of pantomimes, the South London venue has now lined up an enviable programme of family theatre for half term. Big names featured in the programme include Michael Morpurgo, whose Mimi and the Mountain Dragon is brought to the stage by Skewbald Theatre, and Jill Murphy whose stories for young children, Peace At Last and Whatever Next, are performed by Chiff Chaff Theatre.

There is beautiful puppetry in String Theatre’s The Crow’s Tale about a crow with colourful feathers who flies to the sun, and music comes in the form of Ensonglopedia, featuring a whole alphabet of extraordinary animal songs. For older children there’s a chance to understand just why their parents have been shouting at the TV so much lately in the unique comedy show How Does This Politics Thing Work Then? The week concludes with Action Transport Theatre’s Adrift, a tale of migration developed in partnership with primary school children. With all of this and the Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival coming in Easter, Greenwich is clearly much more than a home for top quality pantomime and is well worth a visit whenever the school holidays come around. Join the world’s most magnificent sailing ship from 17 to 21 February for a racing-themed arts and design experience. Kids can try out creative ideas and compete against other vehicles beneath the hull of Cutty Sark. Cutty Sark was one of the fastest ships of the Victorian period due to her wonderful, sleek design. Children can also discover the ship with an explorer trail or one of the under-5s backpacks. With each having a special story to tell, see one of the Cutty Sark characters who will bring incredible stories about the ship’s past to life. Meet Captain Woodget, the ship’s most daring master, Emma Louise Ray, the mother of a young apprentice or Nannie the Witch, the ship’s figurehead. Cutty Sark characters will appear at 11am, 12noon, 1.30 and 2.30pm. Other activities include climbing into the bunks where the crew used to sleep. All activities are free with an admission ticket to the ship and are suitable for ages 5 and above. For more details, please visit www.rmg.co.uk

A Tutor that Suits You
Primary Times spoke to Christina Lumley from Tutor Doctor. She told us, “We had a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. We wondered why parents had to adjust their family’s busy schedules and drive half way across town just to put their child in another classroom with other children… when in fact it was probably the classroom experience that their child was struggling with in the first place. At Tutor Doctor we offer in home 1-2-1 tutoring. We create a programme that is right for your child and then match a qualified tutor who suits your child’s personality and academic needs. We improve your child’s confidence and organisation skills, to help them be more effective and succeed in education.” Go along and meet some of the guys from Tutor Doctor at Tesco’s in Homesdale Road, Bromley on 15 February or call Christina on 020 8059 6574.
Inspiring Teachers, Inspiring Children
Babington House School is inspiring boys and girls from Nursery to Sixth Form. Finding the right school for your child is so important. It should be an environment where they can be happy, learn and thrive. In schools with smaller pupil to teacher ratios, which are often found within independent schools, students generally behave better and get more work done. The teacher gets to know their pupils better and lasting friendships are formed amongst the children, creating a strong class and school community. Babington House School in Chislehurst has no more than 20 children in a class, achieves excellent results but also believes in developing the whole child, encouraging pupils to become confident, enabled young people. Headmaster, Tim Lello, told Primary Times, “Our commitment to provide an academic and well-rounded education with small class sizes, tailored to the needs of our pupils, is really paying off. Our pupils and parents are happy and we are achieving excellent results.” There are still a few places available at Babington for September 2020 entry at some key education transition points (7+, 13+ and 16+). For more information you can talk to the admissions registrar, Miss James, on 020 8467 5537 or you can visit their website at www. babingtonhouse.com.

The work Greta Thunberg has done in bringing the issue of climate change to the forefront of the political agenda around the world is highly admirable. However, there is a downside. More than ever before, children are being exposed to the devastation caused by flash floods, wildfires and the mass extinction of species. Amongst young people, this is creating a growing trend of ‘eco-anxiety’ - an accumulation of feeling powerless in the face of an inevitability beyond their individual control. Given this new reality, Blackheath High School GDST has decided to celebrate its 140th anniversary by committing to 12 months of environmental pledges – 140 of them in 2020. The school aims to reduce the amount of waste it produces, audit the use of single-use plastic and maximise opportunities for reuse and recycling. Appreciating their Maritime Greenwich location near to the River Thames, they’re adding the study of our oceans to the curriculum and getting students out into nature to teach them about how to protect it. Recognising the dangers of climate-anxiety and the real dangers of climate change, the school wants to go beyond learning about the environmental crisis and highlight the good that people around the world are doing, for the benefit of both their students and the planet.

The Boy with the Saucepan Hat There’s really only one word to describe this book and that’s ‘FUN’. The Boy with the Saucepan Hat is the hilarious new book from local Kent author Martyn Harvey. When Oliver Todd wakes up with a saucepan stuck on his head, he is obviously a bit cheesed off. But when he gets to the hospital Emergency Room, things go from bad to worse. The book is written in charming rhyming couplets. That sounds complicated but in fact it makes it great fun to read and enhances the comedy. Younger children will enjoy having it read to them while older ones will have a lovely time reading it for themselves. They’ll have to prise it away from their mums and dads first though! Also, if you do have to take a child to hospital, this is the book to take. It will take some of the boredom out of the wait and make the whole experience a bit less scary. Oh and watch out for the dragon or was it a crocodile? (You’ll have to read the book to understand the significance of that). The Boy with the Saucepan Hat by Martyn Harvey is published by Penzance Press. It has its own website www. TheSaucepanHat.co.uk and is available from good High Street bookshops and online via Amazon, Waterstones and Foyles at recommended price of £5.99. 14

Rock into the Performing Arts This Easter A Fresh Take on Swimming Lessons
Angela Wilson swam competitively for Team GB and firmly believes we all learn best when engaged and enjoying ourselves. Her insight and winning techniques have been developed over 25 years and have made Angela’s Swim School a major provider of lessons in London and the South East, with pools nearby in Bromley and Orpington. Angela told Primary Times, “My dream is to see all children being taught to swim properly, for them to be happy as they learn water skills and safety, grow in confidence and enjoy a physical workout.” To help children get the most from their ‘learn to swim’ journey, Angela has found a fresh way to engage them and has developed a badge programme. Angela’s Swim School, in partnership with The Swimstylers, offers a staged approach to teaching skills and stamina suitable for babies and nonswimmers, ultimately up to a 1500m swim. The Swimstylers programme and badge levels are brought to life by inspirational child characters. The stages within Caspian, Oceana and others show beginner and more accomplished swimmers step by step how to progress with confidence and technique. To become a Swimstyler and join Angela’s Swim School visit www.angelasswimschool.co.uk.

Children are being given the amazing opportunity to join one of London’s leading independent stage schools this Easter. If you’re looking for something more long-term for your 4 – 16 year old, the school is accepting applications for its spring term at parttime branches in Hackney, Camden, Greenwich and Docklands. The classes are led by West End and industry professionals who seek to nurture talent, build confidence, and foster wellbeing in children aged 4-18. Beyond the school there is the chance to be part of the Fiorentini Agency, where many students have been able to secure leading roles in film, television and on the West End stage. Twins Ali and Tulip don’t like their mum’s new boyfriend, Sturgeon. He seems to want to be in charge and ever since he moved in their mum has been acting strangely — as if she is always sleep walking. As would-be detectives with medical knowledge, they set out to find out what his secret is, especially when the teachers at their school start showing similar signs of sleepiness after his visit. Their initial detecting efforts are thwarted by Nan Nan who is somehow always able to track them down. As time goes on they realise there is more to her than meets the eye. Also surprising is the way finding out more about their nemesis twins, Zac and Jay, change their opinion of them. As things start to escalate and past rivalries and a revenge plot is revealed, drastic action is required and the two sets of twins are determined to solve the mystery. This is a dramatic, fast paced first story in a new series with interesting, endearing main characters. It is full of plot twists and surprises to keep you gripped to the end. Full length novel.

Tom McLaughlin (Oxford, £6.99) You would think that science loving super geeks Ashley, Dylan and Tyler would be overjoyed when their school starts using smart speakers to teach them. They might have, except the speakers, called ‘Nova’, dismiss science and maths instead making dance and exercise compulsory. The speakers are proving to be very popular, the whole town seems to be buying multiple copies of them. At first the Novas are very helpful, but once they know everything about everyone they change and start giving orders. They get ever more demanding, develop legs and start crawling around becoming very dangerous with a plan to enslave humanity. Will the geeky friends be able to save humanity? Help is needed and could come from a very unexpected source. This funny, exciting story could make you look twice at the gadgets you use and how much information you give out. Large print and some pictures encourage readers onto medium length novels
Forgotten Fairy Tales of Brave and Brilliant Girls (Usborne Hb, £12.99)
In general girls don’t get a very good PR in fairy tales. Yes, they are usually pretty and nice but a bit dull, don’t do a lot and usually rely on a strong (handsome) male to save them. Except the evil ones who, let’s face it, are often the more interesting characters. This confused me when I was young, I wanted to be a heroine, but the nasty ones seemed to have stronger characters and be more in control. This is just the way the stories were deliberately chosen to reflect the views of societies in the past, however. Look back to the origins and you will find some very feisty, strong minded females. This collection has brought together 8 of them in the original stories. They each take care of, and think for, themselves, go on adventures, and even rescue the odd prince! All very inspiring in a beautifully presented book with lovely illustrations. Well worth sharing – I would love to see some of these turned into shows or pantomimes!
Dinosaurs vs Humans - Matt Robertson
Text © D J Williams 2020
(Orchard Hb, £12.99)

It is no wonder Humans and Dinosaurs didn’t get along. The dinosaurs teased humans with silly songs while humans played tricks on dinosaurs. But one human Pearl, and Dexter the dinosaur hated all the fighting. They went for a walk to get away from it all and bumped into each other. Much to their surprise they realised they had a lot in common and became the best of friends, to the disgust of the rest of their tribes who tried to keep them apart. So they found a new place to play which was great until the ground split and they fell into a pit. Both tribes ran to their rescue, but neither could reach them, until Pearl and Dexter suggested humans and dinosaurs work together to rescue them. This made them all realise each tribe wasn’t that bad, in fact they all got on rather well! A touching, inspirational story full of funny, expressive illustrations with a couple of rhyming sentences on each page to help beginner readers.

Sport Reli
On Your Marks, Get Set… It’s nearly time for Sport Relief! Phoebe Lill, Schools Fundraising Manager for Sport Relief, suggests ten top tips to help schools and families warm up for the event. Sport Relief – which is coming up from 9–13 March – is a unique opportunity for children to get active, have fun, raise money and change lives. We’re very aware of all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes for an event like Sport Relief. Whether you’re a parent baking into the wee small hours or a teacher shepherding 30 reception children around the Sport Relief Mile, we’re hugely grateful for your efforts. Please rest assured that every penny you raise this March will be used to change countless lives, both here in the UK and worldwide. Sport Relief money funds amazing organisations that are tackling some of the most pressing issues of our time, including homelessness, mental health stigma and domestic abuse. The bonus is that taking part in Sport Relief is a great experience for children. It’s an exciting, memorable day when everyone comes together to make a difference through the power of sport. As well as being great fun, it’s a fantastic opportunity to develop children’s empathy and help them understand that they have the potential to take action and change things for the better.
To Kick Things Off…
You’ll find everything you need at sportrelief.com/schools/primary. Whether you’re a teacher, parent or pupil, get online and start exploring all the exciting resources on offer!
Top Ten Tips for Sport Relief Success
Keen to take part? Here are our top ten tips to make sure your children’s Sport Relief goes with a bang! 1. Get the date on the calendar. This year the Sport Relief fun and games are set to begin on Monday 9 March, culminating on Friday 13 March with TV programmes on CBBC and the live telethon in the evening. 2.
SOUTH EAST LONDON FEBRUARY 2020.indd 21 Sport Relief FP.indd 1
Make sure children understand why they’re raising money for Sport Relief. There’s a short film on the Sport Relief website about Cameron, a boy who experienced homelessness and now campaigns to help other children. Talk together about Cameron’s story – check out the learning poster and activities for more information and ideas. Explain that the money you raise for Sport Relief will be used to help people worldwide and in your own community.
3. Look out for Sport Relief wristbands on sale. Just £1 to buy, there’s no simpler (and cooler!) way for children to show their support and kick-start fundraising. If you’re a teacher, why not sell wristbands in school? With our special offer, you can pay a deposit of £6.50 for a box of 20, then settle up later. (order from: www.sportrelief.com/ wristbands) 4. If your school is organising a Sport Relief healthy snack sale, start preparing tasty treats with the children. You’ll find a range of savoury and sweet recipes on the Sport Relief website – all easy to make and good for you. 5. Children across the country will be making a donation to dress up as their sporting hero or wear sports kit on Friday 13th. To save a last-minute panic on the day, start planning outfits in advance and prepare to accessorise with face paint, wigs, deely boppers, ribbons, cheerleading pom poms, medals… 6. Get creative with the children – there are lots of ideas and templates for things to make on the Sport Relief website. You could make bunting and flags to decorate your home or the classroom and corridors. Or how about using our template for a trainer-shaped money box to add excitement to collecting sponsorship money? 7. This year’s official Sport Relief school song is a catchy number called It’s Game On! Why not learn it with the children, singing along to the video on the Sport Relief website? If you want to take your music-making really seriously, you can download the lyrics and sheet music. You’ll even find a Makaton translation to get the children communicating through sign and song. 8. The Sport Relief Mile is the perfect excuse for everyone to get in shape together. If your school is planning to run the Mile this year, get your running shoes on and organise training sessions with the children in the run-up to the big event. 9. Help out on the day. If you’re a parent, find out what your school is going to do for Sport Relief and offer your support. Could you help to supervise the Sport Relief mile? Could you organise a healthy snack sale? Or just shake a bucket at the school gate? 10. At the end of Friday 13th, sit down with friends and family to watch a massive night of entertainment live on the BBC, knowing that together you’ve played an active part in changing people’s lives for the better. We hope the ideas here have inspired you to join in from 9–13 March and get set now to go, go, go! Have fun and a massive thank you for all your support. We’re excited to have you on the Sport Relief team.
