Lambeth Marks Holocaust Memorial Day

On Sunday 21 January from 3-4.30pm, the Kia Oval in Kennington SE11 will again host the Borough’s commemoration for the 2018 Holocaust Memorial Day in the Ashes Suite. The theme for 2018, set by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, is “The Power of Words”. The aftermath of the Holocaust and of subsequent genocides continues to raise challenging questions for individuals, communities and nations. HMD 2018 asks audiences to think about what happens after genocide and of our own responsibilities in the wake of such a crime. This year’s theme is broad and open ended there are few known answers, but the questions are, unfortunately, as relevant as ever. The event will be opened by the Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Marcia Cameron, with closing words from Jasvir Singh OBE, family barrister, co-chair London Interfaith Forum and chair, City Sikhs. As in previous years there will be participation from local schools and choirs. Attendance is free and all are welcome. Entrance to the Kia Oval is via the Alec Stewart Gate.

Beanstalk Need Reading Helpers Life is better when everyone can read well and express themselves confidently. However, low levels of literacy continue to be a persistent problem both nationally and locally. In London alone, 23,968 children left primary school unable to read at the expected standard for their age. Starting secondary school behind their peers can have a knock on effect for children and impact on the rest of their education and work life. Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that recruits, trains and supports volunteers (reading helpers) to work in primary schools with children who have fallen behind in reading. This support enables the children to close the gap between them and their peers. Beanstalk is searching for members of the community in Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich to help work with children in local primary schools. Reading helpers will work with children who struggle with reading or are reluctant readers. They work with three children, twice a week for 30 minutes (term-time only for one academic year). The reading sessions are one-to-one, fun and informal. This support transforms the child’s approach to learning and creates a love for reading. Across London, Beanstalk reading helpers work with over 3700 children but more support is needed every day. No experience or qualifications are required, just a love of reading and desire to work with children. Beanstalk provides training and ongoing support. For more information or to apply, please visit the website at www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk or call Beanstalk on 08454 500 301. 4

Mincemeat Shortbread Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C or Gas Mark 4. 2. Grease a 20 x 30 cm swiss roll style baking tray with butter and line it with greaseproof paper.

This is a delicious recipe for the Christmas period though you may find that you like it so much that you make it all year. It’s pretty simple but you should make sure you have an adult with you especially when you’re using the hot oven.

Ingredients

350g plain flour 225g unsalted butter 100g caster sugar 450g mincemeat (or 900g if you prefer more fruit. We did!) Icing sugar to dust Sifting the flour

3. Sift the flour into a large bowl. 4. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs (or use a food processor).

5. Stir in the sugar. 6. Sprinkle half the mixture onto the baking tray and press down lightly. 7. Spoon the mincemeat on top and spread as evenly as possible. This can

be a bit awkward so you may like to get your adult to help. It’s easier if you’re using the larger quantity of mincemeat. Be careful not to pick up the shortbread mixture. 8. Cover with the remaining mixture and press down lightly with the back of a fork. 9. Bake for 45-50 mins, until lightly browned. 10. Cool for 10 mins. Then cut into 24 squares. 11. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

Meet the most unusual duckling the pond has ever seen. tutti frutti productions, The Albany and ARC Stockton are presenting The Ugly Duckling, written by Emma Reeves, at the Albany this Christmas. Teased and called ‘Ugly’ by his siblings, our hero goes on an adventure in search of a place to fit in. As the woodland trees change from dark weathered branches to silver sticks of frost, the lost and lonely fledgling hides in brushwood and stares skyward at the migrating swans, yearning to belong and marvelling at their beauty.

Pinocchio at the National Theatre

See Pinocchio come to life as never before on the National Theatre stage. On a quest to be truly alive, Pinocchio leaves Geppetto’s workshop with Jiminy Cricket in tow. Their electrifying adventure takes them from alpine forests to Pleasure Island and to the bottom of the ocean. This spectacular new production brings together the director of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the writer of Matilda the Musical and, for the first time on stage, features the unforgettable music and songs from the Walt Disney film including I’ve Got No Strings, Give a Little Whistle and When You Wish upon a Star in dazzling new arrangements. Half-price tickets for under-18s are available for all performances (excluding £15 tickets). Additional family tickets for the run will be released in a ballot closer to the performance dates – see www.nationaltheatre. org.uk for more information. There will be a relaxed performance of Pinocchio on 17 March at 1.30pm.

Moving through all four seasons, tutti frutti and York Theatre Royal bring to life Hans Christian Andersen’s well known tale. With inventive physicality and live music, this charming production plays with the importance of identity and self-worth and takes audiences on a journey to discover inner beauty. The British Theatre Guide told Primary Times, “tutti frutti has gained an excellent reputation for delighting families with their shows, and this tradition continues with Ugly Duckling”. Ugly Duckling was commissioned by the Albany and ARC Stockton to provide an exciting, original and excellent Christmas show for families. The show runs from 4–31 December at various times and is suitable for ages 3+. Tickets cost £12 or £8 for concessions, with a family ticket available for £34. Illustration by Jessica Knight

Breaking the Ice

The Ovalhouse is presenting Breaking the Ice, a Christmas show for 2–6 year olds from 13 - 23 December. This devised show by Filskit theatre tells the astonishing true story of a Husky and a Polar Bear who became friends. Set against the frosty backdrop of the arctic, Breaking the Ice is a non-verbal piece combining physical theatre, puppetry, interactive projection, animation and traditional Sami (Lapland) music. A nature photographer greets the audience as she emerges from her tent and pulls on her red snow suit, boots and gloves. Before long she encounters her first Arctic adventure with a tail-wagging Husky and the pair play in a winter wonderland as the set is transformed through the magic of interactive digital projection. When the polar bear comes along to the tune of stamping feet and booming roar, the pair quickly retire to their tent – but when all three characters finally come face to face, something extraordinary happens. After the performance, children are invited to join the performers onstage and can even try on a pair of animal ears based on the characters from the show. The ‘animals’ play together on the set until a final projection tells everyone it’s night time and you’ll curl up together to sleep under the Northern Lights. Tickets to Breaking the Ice at the Ovalhouse cost £10 and are available by calling 020 7582 7680 or online at www.ovalhouse.com. Photo credit: Unicorn Theatre

Big Garden Birdwatch

Half a million people are expected to watch and count their garden birds for the 2018 RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in January. The world’s largest garden wildlife survey takes place on 27, 28 and 29 January. Spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in your garden or local green space, then send your results to the RSPB. The house sparrow remained top of the Big Garden Birdwatch rankings, with starling and blackbird rounding off the top three. There was also good news for robins, with the average number seen visiting gardens at its highest level since 1986, helping it climb two places to number seven. As well as counting birds, the RSPB is once again asking participants to log some of the other wildlife they have seen throughout the year. This year, people are being asked to look out for badger, fox, grey squirrel, red squirrel, muntjac deer, roe deer, frog and toad. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2018, watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour at some point over the three days. Only count the birds that land in your garden or local park, not those flying over. Tell the RSPB the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see in the hour. For a free Big Garden Birdwatch pack, which includes a bird identification chart, plus RSPB shop voucher and advice to help you attract wildlife to your garden, text BIRD to 70030 or visit www. rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. Registration for Big Garden Birdwatch 2018 opens 13 December 2017.
