Win School Equipment and a Class Sleepover
This Easter, Aquafresh are kicking-off the season with the launch of its Inventors Academy competition, giving schools the opportunity to win £1,000 worth of equipment and a whole class sleepover at the Science Museum.
Fostering New Starts with Chrysalis Care
However you acknowledge it, Easter is undoubtedly a time of birth, new beginnings and fresh starts. As school holidays also feature, it’s a time for making wonderful family memories. Maybe you have shared some fantastic Easter experiences and with room for one or two more in your camp, you have wondered if fostering is for you? That’s a great start. The founders of Chrysalis Care took the very same step, more than 35 years ago, becoming a fostering family along with their three young daughters. Fifteen years later, in 1997, they created Chrysalis Care, a family-run fostering agency and, over more than 20 years, have helped hundreds of families share memorable experiences with children and young people who really need a fresh start. Foster carers are based across London, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and benefit from expert 24-hour advice, guidance, training and support. If a new beginning is on your mind and you want to join in transforming lives through fostering children and young people, contact Chrysalis Care to speak with a friendly and knowledgeable member of staff. Call 020 8298 2800, email info@chrysaliscare.org or visit www. chrysaliscarefostering.org.
Hospice Mini Marathon Registrations are flooding in for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice’s Mini Marathon which will take place on Sunday 29 April in Royal Greenwich Park. The Mini Marathon is a sponsored running event for children aged between 5 and 16 which gives them the chance to run a 2.62 mile course around Royal Greenwich Park; the start point for the Virgin London Marathon. Every child will receive a special Mini Marathon medal and a goody bag at the end of the event. With a big emphasis on fun, there is no pressure for children to run the whole way. They can dress up in their favourite fancy dress to run, walk, jog and, most important of all, enjoy the brilliant experience of taking part in the Hospice Mini Marathon. Over 1,400 Mini Marathon legends helped raise over £70,000 for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice last year. There is a £7.50 per child registration fee which covers the cost of running the event so the Hospice encourages children to raise as much sponsorship as they can. All children who raise over £50 in sponsorship will be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win prizes including a Goal’s Eltham football party and an Anderson Travels UK day trip. For more details or to register a place at the Mini Marathon, visit www.communityhospice.org.uk. 4

Open to every primary school within the UK, the competition encourages teachers to focus on the importance of oral hygiene linked to the National Curriculum, whilst bringing fun to the subject with an invention competition. This engaging activity has been created to support the brand’s new Aquafresh Advance 9-12 range, whilst helping to educate children on the importance of good oral hygiene. What can UK kids do to make it more fun? Aquafresh has the answer! Children will be tasked with creating their very own innovation to make brush time more enjoyable. Using a simple entry form, parents will then be asked to upload their child’s invention to the Aquafresh Inventors Academy microsite, www.aquafreshinventorsacademy.com giving their child the chance to win an exclusive sleepover at the Science Museum. Teachers are encouraged to download fully comprehensive lesson plans, presentations and materials at www.aquafreshinventorsacademy. com to share with their pupils and get them excited about good oral hygiene and brushing their teeth. The competition is open for entries for children between the ages of 7 and 11 until 31 May, so get brushing-up on your funvention lessons and ideas following the Easter break.
Cooking Award for Charlton Manor
Following Charlton Manor’s success integrating food education across the curriculum, modelling good practice and sharing this with other schools both nationally and internationally, the school has won a world award at the renowned Gourmand Cookbook Awards. The school’s first book, ‘Now We’re Cooking! Delivering the National Curriculum through Food’ won a ‘Best in the World’ Award in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, beating over 26,000 food and wine books to the coveted spot. The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards have been running for 23 years, and this year they received entries from 215 countries and regions. Previous Gourmand award winners include Michel Roux, Paul Hollywood and Jamie Oliver who endorses and wrote the foreword for ‘Now We’re Cooking!’ ‘Now We’re Cooking’ provides teachers with exemplary lessons, which have proved engaging and motivational for pupils and are designed to serve as a starting point to transforming curriculum delivery. The book is available at School and Food Teacher events, direct from Charlton Manor Primary School, The Food Teacher website (www. thefoodteacher.co.uk) and Amazon. British Bake Off star Mary Berry came to Charlton Manor Primary School to film an episode of Classic Mary Berry, a six-part programme looking at classic dishes simply prepared with no-fuss recipes. The show featured Mary visiting the school’s award-winning Secret Garden where they teach their students how to grow vegetables, keep bees and look after a brood of chickens. Mary also joined two Year 5 pupils in the teaching kitchen to make something deliciously fresh for their school lunch.

Rocky Rocks After bringing Rocky home in 2013, Seniha quickly realised he was no ordinary dog. From puppy-hood he has always been extremely curious and intelligent, learning to respond to commands in three very different languages —English, Turkish and Polish— and even offering a high five! As his exploits became more entertaining Seniha started documenting his life through a series of captioned photographs which were later going to provide the inspiration for her charming series of children’s books starring her family’s beloved canine, Rocky. Seniha Slowinski is a South East London fitness instructor and teacher, teaching from pre-school level to primary age as well as their teachers. The first book in her Rocky Rocks children’s book series, Rocky Rocks and the Colourful Socks illustrated by Nick Roberts, is available to purchase from online retailers including www.amazon.co.uk and to order from all good bookstores. The Big Bluebell Watch
The Big Bluebell Watch will return this spring and, once again, the Woodland Trust needs your help to spot the UK’s bluebells. Last year they collected 48,200 bluebell records across the UK and this year, with your help, the Trust hopes to discover even more. Last year’s records showed that native bluebells are going strong. 80% of the bluebells recorded were native and they’re doing particularly well in Kent. Non-native bluebell hotspots were as expected they were mainly recorded in developed areas, and only 2% of them were recorded in woodlands. Last year’s data was used by a variety of organisations and scientists to support their work and was downloaded over 150 times. Get involved this year and record your local bluebell sightings from 2 April until 31 May.You can also help by working to prevent the spread of non-native bluebells and protect the native species in the wild. But remember – never pull up bluebells in the wild, even if you suspect they are non-native. Native bluebells are protected by law and it can be difficult to tell the difference. Be part of something bigger. Support the Woodland Trust and help create, protect and restore habitat for bluebells. To keep up to date with the Big Bluebell Watch, why not sign up to receive email updates and find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk.

Family Theatre Engaging Kids with Politics through Theatre
The programme at Greenwich Theatre always features a range of family shows of different types and for different age groups, but one area that the team at Greenwich is tackling this season is political theatre – productions that challenge children to engage with and form opinions about political or social issues that affect the world around them. On 2 April, they present a special performance of Me and My Bee. The show is described by Josie DaleJones, one of the show’s creators, as “a political party disguised as a party party disguised as a show. It encourages adults and children alike to recognise the risk to our planet caused by the ever-increasing threat to the survival of bees.” Later in the month, the theatre presents The Bone Ensemble’s Where’s My Igloo Gone, a magical, interactive performance about a young girl and the impact of global warming.
April Fun at Blackheath Halls
Don’t miss out on the family fun this April at Blackheath Halls before they close for refurbishment over the summer. Opening during the Easter holidays, the Blackheath Halls Children’s Opera and The Multi-Story Orchestra present Benjamin Britten’s most famous opera ever, Noye’s Fludde. Follow the story of Noah and his family as they build an ark big enough to rescue themselves and one pair of every animal on Earth to escape an apocalyptic flood. Continuing the theme of children’s theatre productions why not go and join the invincible Captain Cauliflower and his faithful companion Marvin on an unforgettable adventure, filled with extreme silliness and unquestionable danger in Captain Cauliflower and Marvin the Mischievous Moose on Saturday 14 April. To end the season of great entertainment, Blackheath Halls will host their first ever live science show presented by TV astronomer Mark Thompson on Saturday 21 April. Watch as Mark explores the strange and magical properties of matter with exploding elephant’s toothpaste, vortex generating dustbins, vanishing beakers and even exploding Pringle tubes. Blackheath Halls will be back in the autumn with a new line-up of children’s events. Keep up to date with re-opening plans and the campaign to transform the venue by visiting www.blackheathhalls.com.

Family Theatre
Greenwich Theatre’s artistic director, James Haddrell told Primary Times, “I see no reason why children will be any less able to engage with these issues than adults… A trip to the theatre can create a lifelong interest in a particular topic, and I am sure that whilst children seeing these two shows will certainly be hugely entertained, they will also come away energised and excited about two issues of major importance to our future.” For show dates and prices visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk.

Be Part of the Greatest Show
From 9 to 13 April, children aged 7-16 years will experience the closest thing to performing in PT Barnum’s circus show – minus the fire breathing and trapezing of course – at The Anna Fiorentini Easter Holiday School. This Easter School, inspired by the Golden Globe nominated musical The Greatest Showman, will see students explore a range of dance and musical genres, encouraging them to not only hone their performance skills but to express themselves, learn creatively and work in a team. The end of week showcase will impress family and friends. Leading the classes will be your own Greatest Showman, Mark Short, who has choreographed stars including Tina Turner, Peter Andre and Ant and Dec. He will be joined by Harveen Mann, a West End actress whose impressive repertoire includes Bend It Like Beckham and Lewis Cochrane who has recently finished a tour of Sister Act playing alongside Alexandra Burke.
The award winning Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School is widely praised and respected for nurturing young talent and instilling confidence, self-esteem and personal well-being in its students. Apart from the Easter School, Taster Days for term time schools for children aged 4-18 can now be booked. Any student that joins the Hackney or Docklands branch in April will get to perform in the Hackney Empire Showcase Extravaganza in September. They also have branches in Greenwich and Camden. You’ll find more details at www.annafiorentini.com or for adults at www.stageandthecity.com

Rugby Munchkins
Rugby Munchkin classes nurture children to explore the world of rugby through creative and imaginative activities, learning the most basic and valuable skills within the sport. The classes are all centred around the children and focus primarily on the elements of enjoyment and fun. Through energetic games, children are provided with the opportunity to develop their motor skills aided by lots of music, colours and numbers. All Rugby Munchkin classes are non-contact and appropriate for both girls and boys. The classes are split up into three age groups: 2-3 year olds, 3-4 year olds and 4-7 year olds. Fit to Dance
Disney On Ice have launched the ‘Fit To Dance’ family programme, which aims to inspire families to have fun and be active through storytelling and dance. Inspired by the wide range of Disney On Ice shows and featuring characters from much loved films such as Frozen, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Tangled, Cars and Toy Story – among others, ‘Fit to Dance’ encourages children to create their own dance sequences based on the on-ice choreography, with a little help from family members, school groups, or friends. The programme reflects the creative process used in Disney On Ice shows where stories are developed by a writing team and then choreographed into spectacular dance routines. Children are encouraged to develop their own unique stories, choosing characters, settings and obstacles and then create a dance to tell their stories – just like the show team on Disney on Ice. Parents and schools can download the cross-curricular resources online and use them to support English and Physical Education lessons for children aged four to eight years. Run and distributed through schools with iChild, ‘Fit to Dance’ feeds children’s imagination and encourages imaginative storytelling. Find out more at www.disney.co.uk/disney-on-ice/fittodance.

Computational thinking – the instinctive ability to understand how computers behave, and by extension, how to command a computer to do your bidding – is as important as numeracy and literacy in today’s world. Spark4Kids specialises in teaching kids how to write software, by introducing computer coding through games design. Within a fun and supportive environment, children are actively encouraged to explore and make mistakes with coding, helping them naturally develop their ability to instinctively solve computational problems. An oft-overlooked aspect of coding is how much of a creative outlet it can be for kids, enabling them to express their own thoughts and ideas. When children learn to code by trying out their own ideas, they start to think of themselves as creators and not just consumers of technology. If you have a child who loves playing computer games, then learning to create their own games by attending a Spark4Kids’ holiday coding camp might just be their ultimate holiday activity. Education News The Backpack Project
Mary’s Meals supporters have gifted an incredible 500,000 school bags to impoverished children through The Backpack Project. The school-feeding charity began transporting lorry-loads of used school bags in 2005. Since then, the project continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of children and parents from all over the UK, as well as support from churches, schools, clubs, workplaces and other organisations. The backpacks, which are filled with educational and hygiene items, are given to children in schools in Malawi where Mary’s Meals are provided. The 500,000th backpack was handed out during a visit to Junior Primary schools Chigubudu and Ngabu, in the south of Malawi. The Backpack Project is particularly well supported by young people as part of school recycling projects which invite them to bring in their old schoolbags at the end of the final term each year. Backpacks are filled with educational items, toiletries and clothes to ensure that every child has the resources necessary for their education. Alongside the school meals provided, Mary’s Meals is supporting children’s learning across the world. Mary’s Meals is Primary Times’ charity of the year. They currently provide life-changing meals to 1,230,171 children in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Where Mary’s Meals is provided, there is a rise in rates of enrolment, attendance and academic performance. To find out more or to donate, visit www.marysmeals.org.uk.

To write is such a wonderful, creative outlet for people of all ages and competitions just like this one are a fantastic way of encouraging kids across the UK to take the leap and release their inner authors.” Pick up an entry form from your local Explore Learning centre and return the completed entry before Sunday 29 April or enter online at www.explorelearning.co.uk/youngwriters.

Five Top Tips for Starting a School Garden School gardens are a wonderful way for children to interact with and learn from nature in an educational and relaxed setting. We spoke to Matt McGlashan who set up a school garden at Walmsley C.E. Primary School and has worked with the RHS on the Green Plan It Challenge and school gardens competition. Whether your school already has a beautifully crafted garden teeming with nature, or you’re looking for ideas to get started, Matt has five top tips for you.
Keep it small.
As with all good gardens, you can’t do it all at once. Consider how much time, both curricular and extra-curricular, you can realistically devote to a garden each week and then begin with a project that is manageable within those time constraints.
Beg, steal and borrow. It is amazing just how
much gardening stuff people are willing to donate. Parents, grandparents and local companies will often be a great source of most things you need, from bulbs to compost to old tools – you could have a ‘wear your own clothes’ day in return for the pupils bringing in bulbs. Speak nicely to your PTA and don’t forget to look into the various grants available.
Who is going to be involved? In an ideal world
every child in the school would spend part of their week gardening. In reality you need to decide which children you want to involve and when, so that as many get the chance to garden during their time at your school as possible. Do you want to target specific year groups in curriculum time each year or will this be a gardening club available to different children at different times?
What can we grow? Everything and anything! We
wish, but in truth there’s no fighting what we hear time and again which is to work with the conditions you have. Make a wish list with the children and then look at what will be possible given the conditions at school and the time you have available. What type of soil do you have, have you got sunny and shady areas, is there room for raised beds?
Think plants to inspire the children. When does it flower? Avoid plants that only look great in July and August. What can they grow and eat? Focus on simple to grow veg that don’t require too much space (most fruit and veg will grow in a pot) or attention. Peas, carrots, strawberries, raspberries, onions and garlic are all good examples. Grow what is reliable and you know does well. It is sometimes a good lesson to fail but generally you want the children to see the fruits of their labour. You want plants that are tough and reliable, look after themselves and don’t need too much attention. Native wildflowers and bulbs are great, just watch for the bullies that want to take over your garden.
Get the bones right. Getting the structure right early on will save you time and money and allow you to teach everything you want in your outside space. Think about the different elements that you would like to include, such as type of planting beds or planters, composting areas, water butts, an inside space such as a poly tunnel, wildlife friendly areas, orchards, seating, supports for climbers, paths and storage space for tools and pots. Even if you can’t do all of this at once, try to have a plan of how you want the garden to evolve over time. Ready to get started with your school garden? Register with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening to receive a free welcome pack of resources at schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk/home. If you already have a lively school garden of your own, don’t forget to enter the RHS School Gardeners of the Year competition which is open until 25 April. Visit schoolgardening.rhs. org.uk/competitions for more information. Thank you to Charlton Manor Primary School and Columbia Road Primary School for their pictures.
