THE BIGGEST CHILDREN’S PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION IN THE SOUTH EAST!

The Best Family Guide to What’s On May Half Term Edition • Issue 113 • 14 May - 1 July 2018

An Interview with Holly Smale by Hannah Draisey I enjoyed the facts Holly Smale, writer of the popular teenage novel series Geek Girl, you was recently interviewed by young journalist Hannah Draisey about her books and her inspiration for the series. Hannah conducted the included interview by phone as part of the BBC School Report project when she in Geek was a patient attending the Evelina Children’s Hospital’s own school in Girl. What South London. Hannah has kindly let us publish her interview. interests What made you want to write Geek Girl? you in I wanted to be a writer since I was four but didn’t know what to write about. facts like I was 29 when I decided to write a story about my past. these?

Getting to Know Geek Girl

How long does it take you to write a book? Each of my books took a different amount of time to write. The first Geek Girl book took three years to write because I was working full time and writing at the weekends. The second book took a year as I didn’t have to work and had more experience. The books I write now take six to nine months each.

Where do you get your inspiration? I get inspiration from everything. I listen to conversations, I pay attention to how people walk and dress, I am incredibly nosey. I use experiences from my own life, if I overhear something funny or interesting I might include it in my books.

Which books did you enjoy reading when you were growing up? When I was very little, I read the Faraway Tree series. When I got a bit older, I read The Borrowers and Anne of Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables helped me when I was going through a difficult time.

Which books have you enjoyed reading recently? I’ve just finished reading the Game of Thrones books. It’s the first time I’ve read a fantasy novel. I’ve enjoyed the difference in genre. As a writer it’s important to read different types of books. You can sometimes get stuck reading just one genre.

Do you ever read your own books? Yes, I don’t read them for pleasure because I know them so well and I know what made me write the books. Because it’s a series, when starting to write the next book I go back and read all the books before that again. I remind myself what’s going on and the type of tempo the story is paced at.

I was a lot like Harriet (Geek Girl character) when I was younger and still am now. Facts are a different way of seeing the world and facts are Harriet’s narrative voice. It is also a way of showing Harriet’s personality and character.

Are any of the characters in Geek Girl based on real people? No character is the same as a person in real life, most of them are fictional however a couple are very similar to people I know. Harriet’s dad for example is very similar to my own dad. Harriet was very similar to me as a teenager. Some of the characters are based on a mix of different people I’ve met.

To finish, Hannah also asked Holly some questions about herself. What advice would you give your teenage self? I’d tell her to be brave. When I was younger, I blamed myself for things that happened; I’d go back and give myself a hug.

What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? What a good question. Salted caramel ice cream and Turkish delight ice cream, which is very hard to find. Basically anything, I love ice cream!

Holly Smale’s first published book, Geek Girl, won the 2014 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and she’s gone from strength to strength ever since. There are six books in the Geek Girl series, all published in paperback by Harper Collins and are available in High Street and online bookshops. 2

It is for any child who might be feeling that everyone is getting places except them, and challenges the thing that holds you back (mostly your own insecurities). My daughter cannot wait to take it into school and share it with her classmatesʼ RACHEL, PARENT REVIEWER

You Are Awesome How many times have your children complained because they are no good at sport, can’t do maths or really struggle with exams? If children believe they can’t do something, the chances are they won’t try. But what if they really could get better at anything they tried their hand at? Matthew Syed is setting out to help children excel at just about anything they put their mind to. You Are Awesome inspires and empowers young readers with a toolkit for developing a growth mindset and finding the confidence to realise their potential. The first children’s book from the Times journalist, two-time Olympian and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed, takes the themes and principles of his award-winning adult novels and recasts them for a 9+ readership. Using real life stories (concerning the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams and JK Rowling) Syed demonstrates that success really is earned rather than pre-ordained, and that our abilities can be transformed through practice. With a growth mindset, based on hard work and determination, practice, self-belief and resilience, there’s no reason why anyone can’t achieve (almost) anything. Practical, insightful and positive, this is the book to help children build resilience, embrace their mistakes and grow into successful, happy adults. Matthew Syed’s number one best-selling book You Are Awesome is available for £9.99 online and from all good high street retailers.

The Bromley Boys Kicks Off on Home Turf

The Bromley Boys is a funny, feel-good football comedy which will be going on general release on 1 June. Inspired by the book The Bromley Boys by Dave Roberts, the film tells the story of the author as a 15 year-old and his passion for the worst football team in Britain – Bromley FC. Set on the cusp of the 1970s and played out to the nostalgic sights and sounds of the era, the film captures the lengths to which a devoted fan will go to save his beloved football club and the difficulties thrown up when your first love turns out to be the belligerent club chairman’s daughter. The Bromley Boys is a story of the underdog coming good, first love and the beautiful awkwardness that goes with it. With an impressive British cast headed by young Brenock O’Connor (Game of Thrones) as Dave, the film stars Alan Davies and Martine McCutcheon. The cast are joined by several up and coming actors including Betsy Blue, a Bromley local, and World Freestyle Footballer Sean Garnier. For more information, please visit www.thebromleyboys.com.

Space Rabbit Crash Lands in Greenwich

This Half Term Greenwich Theatre is set to welcome, on Friday 1 June at 2pm and 6pm, a very unusual rabbit in a brand new show. Rufus Longbottom and the Space Rabbit is the latest family musical from the acclaimed Filament Theatre. It has been created from stories submitted by over 600 primary school children from around the country. “Children have huge imaginations and sometimes they take you by complete surprise” said the show’s director, Sabina Netherclift. “Children don’t look at age in the same way as we do, so even old people who might not be able to get up out of a chair still want to make journeys and do things. The very first story of Rufus Longbottom had him travelling to Canada in his chair because he wanted to find some Maple Ice cream! Every character has been dreamed up by the children. Rufus Longbottom was invented by a child in Derbyshire, Space Rabbit from Oxfordshire and Picklepine - a pirate who is one of Space Rabbit’s enemies – is from East London. We have stitched other storylines together and worked with the children to make an adventure that has enough danger – there wasn’t enough earlier on!” Filament will be pioneering the use of loop station gloves during the show, with the performer playing the Space Rabbit manipulating the words, the songs and the sounds the audience hears. My First Book of Quantum Physics Everything around us is composed of very, very small things known as subatomic particles. When scientists started to discover more about these particles they realised that in such a tiny world the laws of physics did not apply and they needed to generate a new set of theories, which are known today as quantum physics. The science of these particles allows us to have electronic devices from smartphones and computers to medical imaging equipment and microwaves. However, quantum physics also pushes us to the very boundaries of what we know about science, reality and the structure of the universe. This new world is an amazing place where quantum particles can do weird and wonderful things. Have your mind blown as you find out fun facts like how two atoms can exist in the same place. My First Book of Quantum Physics is an entertaining illustrated guide which explains key concepts and big ideas in a simple and accessible way, giving children a fun and engaging introduction to the fascinating and mysterious world of physics. It’s a great way to enthuse them with STEM subjects in general and Physics in particular. My First Book of Quantum Physics is available online and from all good high street retailers for £12.99. 18

“Grammar Schools: Who Will Get In?”

This is the title of a forthcoming BBC 2 documentary featuring Townley Grammar School. Concerns about entry to the most successful grammar schools, the selective testing and how parents can or should support their children have featured in the national debate in recent years. It can be a confusing and, at times, a distressing process for many. Townley Grammar’s Selective Education event for Year 5 girls is on Saturday 16 June. There are many so called “experts” who will offer advice and opinions but this is the only event that will bring the real experts together to speak to you, the parents. Representatives from Bexley Admissions, CEM (the test providers) and Townley Grammar School will be on hand to give advice and

guidance. You and your daughter will get to see the type of work Year 7 students do and talk to teachers from English, Maths and Science. They will give you guidance on how to determine if your daughter will flourish in such an environment and advice on how to prepare for the selective tests. The aims of this day are to share insights into the benefits and challenges of a selective education. They will inform parents of primary age pupils of indicators of selective ability and assist in the decision making regarding entering for selective tests. The event will also provide information about effective parental support for pupils of ability. If you aspire to a grammar school education for your daughter, this is an invaluable insight not available anywhere else and places are strictly limited. Due to demand this event is only open to girls in Year 5.

Disney’s hit West End musical Aladdin has launched a brand new video library to accompany its education programme. Nine short films have been made in consultation with teachers in order to help pupils prepare for their theatre experience as well as deepen their knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in theatre making. Aladdin’s curriculum-linked education resources are created for Key Stage 2 with workshops for pupils aged 7+ also available. Hosted by Angellica Bell, the videos feature exclusive new footage of rehearsals and interviews with both the show’s original creative team and the London cast and crew, which have been filmed in both London and New York. The video library will give teachers and students a new insight into Aladdin’s costumes, scenic design, music, characterisation, backstage crew, the ensemble, and more. To further enrich these resources all episodes feature end card questions to spark debate and encourage further learning. The video library and education resources are available free to schools on www.aladdineducation.co.uk/behind. Photo credit: Deen van Meer ©Disney

The Story of Water is full of practical activities, ideas, facts and quizzes to give students the skills to think about water issues internationally and at home in a fun and easy to digest fashion, helping them to reflect on their own habits and implement change through small steps, whilst grasping wider issues as well. RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch Results

A UK-wide survey of birds in school grounds has revealed the blackbird remains the most common playground visitor. 88% of schools that took part in the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch survey reported seeing blackbirds with an average of seven seen per school. Woodpigeons moved up to number two and starlings completed the top three. The survey is part of RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch, which saw more

than 420,000 people taking part over the Birdwatch weekend at the end of January. Rebecca Kerfoot, the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch Co-ordinator, told Primary Times, “It’s encouraging that so many children and teachers continue to take part in Big Schools’ Birdwatch. If your class enjoyed taking part in the Birdwatch and you want to do more to help wildlife why not get involved in the RSPB’s new Wild Challenge scheme? Wild Challenge is a great way to get your pupils closer to nature by completing fun and engaging activities. It’s free, open to all and there are things to do at any time of the year. And we’ll reward you as you complete each stage.” By completing activities ranging from mini beast safaris and habitat exploring to making a compost heap and planting for wildlife, schools can log their achievements on the RSPB Wild Challenge website and collect bronze, silver and gold awards. On the day, teachers will lead a wide variety of lessons including outdoor Maths, English and Science, gardening and eco projects, bioblitzing, den-building, Art and Drama, tree climbing and much more. Last year, children in 70 countries including Brazil, USA, Australia, Tanzania and Thailand all joined forces to celebrate the day. Free Workshops at The South London Gallery

Brazilian artist Luiz Zerbini is one of South America’s best known artists, recognised for his colourful figurative and abstract paintings. This exhibition at the South London Gallery is his first major UK solo show, displaying paintings, sculpture and film works. His work explores contemporary culture, the natural environment and cityscapes, particularly Rio de Janeiro where he lives and works. The Gallery is offering free workshops to schools during the Summer Term suitable for primary and secondary age groups. Workshops take the exhibition as a starting point to explore themes such as natural and man-made forms, nature and architecture, the urban environment - its colours, textures, signs and movement, geometry and art, what is abstract and art and 2D and 3D work exploring paintings and sculptures. Workshops include developing critical analysis and ideas through group discussion, a practical element exploring the physical qualities and processes involved in the artwork and group-work. Workshops take place at the SLG in the galleries and art studio. The duration is 2-3 hours and timings can be flexible to fit into school timetables, eg 9.30am-12noon. Workshops are free of charge to school groups. The art studio/garden space can be used for lunches. The workshops respond to the exhibition programme so that the children can look at the artwork and take inspiration for their own work back in the studio. They work with an artist who leads on creative activities. Email the School & Community Projects Manager, Heather Kay for more information or to book a workshop - heather@southlondongallery.org.

Family Ride, Glass Mill Leisure Centre, SE13 7RZ

How did you get into tennis? I was very active as a kid and I especially loved running. I first picked up a racket at an after-school club in Sydney where I grew up and absolutely loved it. I was 8 years old but soon realised I was quite good so started training more regularly. I trained in Barcelona for about a year and then decided to make the move to the UK and settled in Eastbourne to progress my career and I haven’t looked back.

How many hours of training do you have a week? I train for about 25 hours a week, combining a mixture of court play and conditioning in the gym with my sport psychology sessions.

10am. Different destination every month. Meet at the playground next to Glass Mill Leisure Centre at 10am, to enjoy a short 8 to 10 mile ride to a venue with a playground and tea/ coffee stop. Then back. For more information call 07826 559 603.

All the grass court tournaments are amazing for me - the home crowd is always a massive support and they make the whole experience so much fun.You can’t make me pick a favourite!

All Aboard Game, Cutty Sark, Greenwich, SE10 9HT

If you weren’t a tennis player, what would you be? I’ve always loved playing on big stages in big moments so I’d like to think I’d be good doing something that involves a stage!

What’s your favourite thing about playing at Eastbourne International? I moved here when I was 14 and think of it as home. So, to be able to play in a big tournament against world-class players in my hometown is very special. Devonshire Park is a fantastic venue and the whole town comes together every June when the tournament is on. Nothing compares to competing at home especially when it’s against world class players - the support you get from the crowd is just amazing.

What advice would you give young people like me wanting to become tennis players in the future? I’ve worked so hard to get where I am, so my advice would be never to give up. Being a professional tennis player requires dedication and commitment but it’s important to enjoy it. We all started playing tennis because we loved it, so it’s important to remember that. I try to keep things in perspective so stay relaxed and have fun! See Konta live at the Nature Valley International Eastbourne from 22-30 June. Under 16s go free (subject to booking fees). Stay at Hôtel Le Château Fort de Sedan Sedan in The French Ardennes has frequently been selected as one of the key locations for the filming of many films and TV series because its historic centre looks like 19th century Paris. Now it’s going to be the setting for the new BBC adaptation of Les Miserables. Founded in 1424, the town is situated around 125 miles from Paris, 50 miles north-east of Reims, and a little over 5 miles south of the border with Belgium. The historic centre occupies a peninsula formed by a bend in the River Meuse. Today, Sedan is best-known for possessing the largest fortress in Northern Europe. One of the major tourist attractions of The French Ardennes, Sedan Fort, is open to the public, and contains the entire history of the fortress and town within a museum that is especially dedicated to the war of 1870, filled with a rich collection of Prussian helmets and the panoramic study of the Sedan battle by the Bavarian painter Ludwig Braun. The inner circle of the castle has been converted to a luxury four-star hotel the Hôtel Le Château Fort de Sedan, with 54 rooms and suites. Fortresses and castles have long played a major role in The French Ardennes which, itself, has been at the crossroads of history for centuries. On 20-21 May, the Castle of Sedan will host the twenty second edition of its annual Medieval Festival, an event that has grown year on year on year. Rooms are available from around £95 per night. For more information about the castle, please visit www.hotel-lechateaufort.fr/en/.

Working to protect the environment has never had a higher profile than in 2018. The educational and wellbeing sectors are also working hard to get people out into nature. In tourism, glamping is meeting the rising demand from guests wanting a more authentic and environmentally friendly experience. This desire is pushing operators to really practice what they preach in terms of offering a green holiday. Simon Thomason, Owner of Glisten Glamping in the South of France explained to the Primary Times how this is being brought to life, “In terms of the guest experience one of the key objectives has to be to enable each guest to really connect with the environment. To accomplish this, the accommodation must integrate with the natural habitat. This means we will not always use the same accommodation across all of our sites. The impact of the accommodation on the environment of each location should be minimal, and is fabricated in such a way that it encourages recycling and re-use after life. We’ve always strived to look at the way we do business in a sustainable way. Matt Hocking, our creative sustainable consultant who led the design team for the Eden Project for three years, helps our landowners to put sustainability at the heart of their business.” Looking up at the night sky, breathing in fresh air and cooking on open outdoor stoves is all part of great glamping. Add to that hammock beds for the children, walks and outdoor games - there is no better way to come back from a holiday refreshed and feeling connected to the world. Experience luxury Glisten Glamping in France, for more information visit www.glistencamping.com
