Design Competition Winners Announced

Winners of this year’s Architecture in Schools competition were announced in July at Canary Wharf’s East Wintergarden. Primary school pupils showcased their designs for a ‘Shared City’. As well as receiving prizes for their work, the children were able to see professional architectural models of the top three submissions. This year, 1,440 pupils took part in Open City’s pioneering Architecture in Schools programme. The four-month project, which included building visits and a design challenge, involved children designing their own ‘Shared Cities’ that encourage communities to celebrate and value London’s open spaces where people can meet to socialise, communicate, relax and improve their wellbeing. The winning designs included re-designs of Avery Hill Park, Palace Road and Caldwell Garden Estate. They include a concert hall shaped like a guitar, an extended nature garden and a community café run by local residents. The top all-rounder prizes were awarded to Year 3 pupils from Reay Primary School who worked with Shade Abudul Architects,Year 4 pupils from Streatham Wells Primary School who worked with architects from Studio Cherry and Year 6 pupils from Alderwood Primary School who worked with architects from Bell Associates. Key Stage Two class groups from 10 different London boroughs found the inspiration for their designs in the city’s exemplary buildings, which they visited alongside built environment professionals from exceptional architectural and engineering practices. Through exploring buildings such as the Angel Building, the Barbican, National Gallery, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Southbank Centre, the pupils have been able to learn out of the classroom about, and from architecture, through direct first-hand experience.

You may remember that in our Easter editions we featured a competition from the Aquafresh Inventors Academy to draw an invention to make brush time more fun.The winning invention came from Primary Times reader, Giselle, 10, from Kennington. It was called ‘Brushing Explosions’. Giselle’s design is a ‘Create Your Own’ toothbrush with a number of elements that children can change around to make brush time something that they look forward to every day. Giselle scored highly for innovation, creativity, quality and on the effectiveness of making brush time more fun from the judges, Dominic Wilcox, Chief Inventor at Little Inventors, representatives from Aquafresh and from the Science Museum. As well as seeing her creation actually made by Dominic, Giselle won her class a sleepover at the Science Museum and her school,Archbishop Sumner Primary School, £1,000 worth of school equipment. Chief Inventor at Little Inventors, Dominic Wilcox, told Primary Times,“I was extremely impressed with the entries. It was such an honour to look through all of the inventions for the Aquafresh Inventors Academy. It was difficult to pick a single winner. Giselle’s winning invention really stood out for me, I scored ‘Brushing Explosions’ top marks for both innovation and creativity and it’s been a great experience bringing it to life over the past few weeks.”

Instant Ice Cream

This awesome Instant Ice Cream recipe comes from Dr Michelle Dickinson’s The Kitchen Science Cookbook. Dickinson has made it her life’s mission to make science and engineering accessible for all. This latest recipe looks at the scientific principle of phase change and takes 10 minutes.

Equipment and Ingredients

• One small zip-resealable sandwich bag • One large zip-resealable plastic bag • 120ml (1/2 cup) cream or full fat milk. • 12.5g (1 Tbsp) sugar • A few drops of vanilla or other flavouring of your choice • 3-7 cups of ice • 75g (5 Tbsp) salt

Instructions

1. Add the cream, sugar, and vanilla to the small bag and seal, ensuring that any excess air is released. 2. Place the ice, the salt and the cream-filled bag into the larger bag and seal. 3. Vigorously shake the large bag over a sink for approximately five minutes. Stop when the cream has started to freeze and turn into a solid. 4. Remove the small bag and quickly rinse off the salt solution with cold water. 5. Pour the ice cream into a bowl, add your favourite toppings and enjoy eating your newly frozen dessert.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

Explanation

Ice cream is an emulsion, or a mixture of two liquids (water and fats) which do not normally mix together. To make ice cream, the milk or cream mixture needs to change its state from a liquid to a solid. If the mixture was simply placed straight into the freezer, the water part would freeze first, forming large, crunchy ice crystals. Ice cream tastes better when it is creamy rather than crunchy, so the goal in ice cream making is to create the smallest ice crystals possible. By vigorously shaking the bag, any large ice crystals that may be forming are broken up into smaller crystals, resulting in a smooth and creamy ice cream. The freezing point of ice is lowered by the addition of salt, so it starts to melt. As this ice melts it draws heat energy from its surroundings - including the cream mixture enclosed in the smaller bag - cooling it enough to cause the liquid cream emulsion to freeze, changing it from a liquid to a solid and forming ice cream.

The Kitchen Science Cookbook is perfect for parents and children to enjoy together. It’s packed full of fun experiments families can do at home. Dr Dickinson’s The Kitchen Science Cookbook is available online and from all good high street stores for £19.99.

Matthew Warchus’ big-hearted, smash hit production of Charles Dickens’ immortal classic A Christmas Carol returns to The Old Vic this Christmas, with previews from 27 November, joyously adapted for the stage by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). Last year, The Observer described it as “a love song to Christmas, to the redeeming power of theatre and, not least, to The Old Vic itself.” Filling the auditorium to the brim with mince pies, music and merriment, the unique staging immerses the audience in this uplifting story for everyone aged 8+. Scrooge is played by Stephen Tompkinson. The show involves bell-ringing, Christmas carols, lots of flying food and even more snow. Last year’s reviews painted a wonderful picture. The Independent said, “Matthew Warchus’s magnificent staging provides everything you might want from a theatrical adaptation of Dickens’s timeless (and never more timely) morality tale.” And the Guardian said “Jack Thorne’s superb retelling mines the ghosts of Scrooge’s past in a timely production brimming with love and affection.” The Radio Times asked, “Dare I suggest it, it could even rival that obvious pinnacle of Dickens’ adaptations, The Muppet Christmas Carol?”

Nativity! The Musical

Due to phenomenal demand and after wowing audiences last year, Nativity! The Musical returns to the Eventim Apollo, London from 19-31 December. Every child in every school has one Christmas wish, to star in a Nativity, and at St Bernadette’s School they’re attempting to mount a musical version! Only trouble is teacher Mr Maddens has promised that a Hollywood producer is coming to see the show to turn it into a film. Join him, his teaching

assistant the crazy Mr Poppy, hilarious children and a whole lot of sparkle and shine as they struggle to make everyone’s Christmas wish come true. Feel-good, funny and full of festive joy, the smashhit musical was adapted for the stage by Debbie Isitt, the creator of the much-loved films. Featuring all of your favourite sing-a-long hits from the movies including Sparkle and Shine and Nazareth, this is the must-see show this Christmas! For more information on how to book tickets visit www.nativitythemusical.com

Big Names Join Greenwich Theatre

The autumn season at Greenwich Theatre is now well underway, with a series of big names joining the family theatre line-up. In September the popular book adaptations include ‘Guess How Much I Love You’, returning to Greenwich alongside a first visit for Pigtails Productions’ ‘How To Hide A Lion’. The show tells the story of a little girl trying to protect an escaped lion from the local townsfolk by attempting to squash him into a variety of sneaky tight spots. Then in October it’s the turn of ‘The Moomins’ who arrive at the Greenwich Theatre Studio for three special performances. This new show tells the story of a year in Moominvalley and each section of the story has an interactive element. Audience members have snowball fights, toast marshmallows around a fire and go sea-swimming. The highest profile event of them all, ‘Bing Live!’ arrives on 17 October with the CBeebies favourite transported to the stage with Bing, Sula, Coco and Pando learning all about how to tell stories by pretending, dressing-up and singing songs. The season comes to an end with the return of everyone’s favourite pantomime dame – Andrew Pollard – once again at the helm as Greenwich presents the rarely told story of ‘Robinson Crusoe’ in its own inimitable panto style. For the full season line-up, visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk or call the box office on 020 8858 7755.

The Tusk Rhino Trail

Did you know that Rhinos have roamed London before. In the Paleolithic period, around 60,000 years ago when England was a cold, dry desert, the woolly rhinoceros was common. Well they’re coming again! Not so woolly this time and maybe not exactly roaming. The Tusk Rhino Trail is a London wide art installation to raise public awareness of the plight of the rhino. The sculptures will be displayed at a selection of iconic London sites including Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Carnaby Street and the event will culminate with the celebration of World Rhino Day on 22 September. All 21 rhinos can be spotted and trail maps are available online at www.tusk.org. Follow #tuskrhinotrail for all the latest news. Our picture shows the rhino designed by Axel Scheffler. Explore Learning delivers extra tuition in centres nationwide. Keira is 10 years old and she has attended Explore Learning for over a year. Explore has helped with her confidence and has helped her to get to where she wants to be in her class. She feels happier knowing that she has already seen the work before, which gives her a real confidence boost. Her parents would recommend any other parent to Explore. Primary Times recently talked to Keira and her parents about her experience of Explore, “Explore isn’t what you think tuition would be like, instead it is made to be fun and enjoyable for all children, from every background. The Centre is inclusive and all children are treated equally. The tutors and the service motivate the children who perhaps wouldn’t usually want to go and do extra work. Keira, for example, would always come out saying how glad she was that she has been that day. The tutors support Keira to develop skills to progress in her learning. They encourage her to challenge herself, step out of her comfort zone and to be independent whilst giving her the extra support she requires. Keira enjoys the reward systems that are in place to encourage her to work hard and achieve her goals, and when she gets a certificate it makes her feel on top of the world.” Explore Learning has award-winning maths and English tuition centres nationwide. Choosing your New School with

Choosing your new School

Choosing your New School Starting to look at secondary schools? We give you the lowdown on what to do. Choosing a secondary school is one of the most important decisions you are going to make because it’s likely to have a huge impact on your child’s future, way beyond the school gates. There’s some essential ‘homework’ to be done before you make that all important choice and you must make sure you know the deadlines for applying via your local authority. For some, it won’t be an issue, as catchment area rules determine your first or other choices, decided by postcode or feeder school. However, for those of you who can choose, the task can seem a daunting one. To help you through the process, follow our tips for some forward planning and get the most out of a school open day.

Talk to as many pupils and parents as you can manage on the tour for maximum feedback. Don’t forget to take in the atmosphere and environment of the school, to get a feel for whether your child would be happy in these surroundings.

Students in action

As you’re on the school tour, observe the children in school, as they will often be a great indicator of a school’s ethos. You’ll get to see how children treat each other and how they interact within the classroom and corridors. Are they happy? Do they seem confident and animated? Are teachers welcoming and friendly, and are you getting the feeling of a warm, open attitude?

Make a Shortlist of Schools

Firstly, make a shortlist of the schools that your child could attend by looking at nearby local authority’s websites or visit www.education.gov.uk. Make sure you check their admission rules carefully to ensure your child is eligible for a place. You also need to be happy that your child can travel to school easily and that siblings, if relevant, could go to the same school. After that, it’s time to take a look at the facts and figures to make a comparison on paper.

Do Your Homework

It will help if you do some online research of your own. All schools have to have a website. Among other things, this has to include details of the curriculum, admission criteria, behaviour policy, special educational needs policy, disability policy, links to Ofsted reports, links to performance data, the school’s latest key stage attainment and progress measures. But the other things on the website may be at least as important. Does the school feel an exciting place to be? Yes schools can be exciting; maybe they’ve changed a bit since our time. Is there a regular newsletter and is there lots going on? Does whoever writes the website sound enthusiastic about the school? If they’re not, you may not be either.

The Head teacher’s talk

Don’t miss out on the Head teacher’s talk, usually given at specified times on open days/evenings. You’ll find out what priorities and emphasis the Head gives to various aspects of their school, and will be able to see if these aspirations match your family’s own. The Head should come across as genuine, inspiring and bursting with pride for both school and pupils, as well as being very clear about the school’s achievements and goals.

Equal opportunities for all

Once you’re satisfied with your shortlist and you’ve done your homework, it’s time to do the most important thing of all and visit the schools. Nothing beats going to see the school for yourself, so get the most out of your visit with our tips and ideas.

School should bring out the best in every child. If yours requires additional help in any areas of learning, ask about the support available to enable them to reach their potential. Query how students are monitored to ensure their learning stays on track and they don’t ‘slip under the radar’ and fall behind their peers. Ask about communication systems that are in place to ensure teachers and parents can work together to be a constant support to your child.

Head to the Open Day

Most open days will feature a pupil-led tour. Ask lots of questions and you’ll hear all sorts of interesting things from your friendly guide that don’t feature in the prospectus. 16

It’s an open day, so keep an open mind Remember this is about your child, not you. Try not to be influenced by your own educational experience as it may not be relevant. Find out what your child really thinks and don’t hesitate to take advice from trusted teachers who you feel know your child best – you may be surprised by what they tell you. In the end, trust your instincts, find the right environment for them to be happy, then sit back and watch them flourish.

Our nurturing approach is underpinned by dedicated and committed teaching, small class sizes, close links with our parent community and a clear focus on first rate pastoral care. To this end, we seek to understand our pupils as individuals and support them closely throughout their learning journey.” He went on to say, “As a parent whose children have flourished at St Edmund’s, I know how transformative the experience here can be.” St Edmund’s School Canterbury is a distinctive and historic independent school for boys and girls aged 3 – 18 that provides a lively, challenging education in a nurturing environment. Academic standards are set high and the school is renowned for its excellence in Music, Drama and Art, as well as its sporting success in cricket, tennis, hockey and football. As a Catholic Comprehensive Academy, we are a welcoming, vibrant and happy community dedicated to faith, learning and achievement. We have a tradition of high standards and high expectations. As a caring Christian community we work in partnership with parents and parishes to enable students to achieve their very best. Gospel values inform all aspects of community life and learning and in our community everyone has the right to be happy, be safe and achieve. We have high standards of behaviour which was borne out when Ofsted visited us in September 2014 and said that we are a ‘Good School’ and that the behaviour and safety of students was ‘Outstanding’. Ofsted confirmed their findings in October 2016 and described the school as ‘harmonious’ with ‘positive relationships between staff and students’. All students are set by ability from day one so that each individual is challenged to achieve their best. To support successful transition to secondary school Year 7 students have their own dining room and playground. As a comprehensive school, every child really does matter and we help each individual to grow spiritually, academically and socially. We are proud to be a small school where every child is known, recognised and valued as an individual.”

and their families of all faiths who are sympathetic to the ethos and they celebrate the diversity of cultures and backgrounds which strengthen the community. Ms Alison Barker, head of KS1 and KS2, told the Primary Times, “Whilst our school is a stimulating and engaging place to be, we firmly believe that learning does not stop at the school gates. We offer many opportunities for learning beyond the classroom, ranging from performances and workshops, to residential visits. We have our own Forest School and highly trained teachers to facilitate outdoor learning. We offer a wide range of sports, including fencing and a great many after school clubs. For example ballet, philosophy and taekwondo to name a few. Our pupils are challenged to do their very best in a stimulating and supportive environment. We aim to develop a lifelong love of learning in our young pupils by engaging their curiosity, encouraging them to question and allowing them to explore their own interests and independence. In June, the King’s Rochester Preparatory School under 11 netball team travelled to the Copperbox Arena, London, to compete in the final matches of the ‘Road to Copperbox Challenge’. Eight teams from across the South East, were invited to play for a place in the final game, held during half time of the Netball Super League match between Surrey Storm and Loughborough Lightning, televised live on Sky Sports. The King’s girls stormed through to the Semi-Finals, where an early 2–0 lead to the opposition nearly brought their run to an end but with outstanding resilience and passion they pushed themselves beyond their limits, fighting back to take a win of 5–3 and securing their place in the live final. Proudly walking out with the Surrey Storm and Loughborough Lightning players, in front of 7,500 spectators including netball scouts, their families and friends, the girls ambitiously took to the court. In a tense match, the girls triumphed. Taking home the trophy and ending an incredible season which included winning three netball tournaments and being placed fifth in the country. To find out more about sport at King’s Rochester, a great place to start is the Open Day on Saturday 29 September from 9.15am to 12noon. 3 Sept - 7 Oct 2018

Mary’s Meals are asking you to bring hope to a hungry child with this World Porridge Day. Children all over the world are preparing for the new term, including more than 1.2 million learners who receive a daily meal from Mary’s Meals. The charity works with some of the world’s poorest communities to set up school feeding programmes that encourage children to attend class, learn, and work towards a better future. World Porridge Day, 10 October, celebrates the huge difference that a daily mug of porridge from Mary’s Meals makes in the lives of chronically hungry children. This October, schools across the UK will be joining in with the Porridge Smiles fundraising campaign to send a real message of hope to children living in poverty. Mary’s Meals is inviting you to host a porridge party fundraiser at school, any time in October. It’s a great way to bring staff, pupils and parents together and everyone will have fun creating a smiley face in their bowl of porridge using tasty toppings. To request your free Porridge Smiles fundraising pack – which includes tips for setting up your party and a poster to publicise your event – visit www.worldporridgeday.com and complete the online form. You’ll also be able to see some of the best Porridge Smiles from last year in their 2017 Hall of Fame. It costs just 7p to provide one meal, so your school’s fundraising will make a huge difference to children receiving Mary’s Meals. The charity is committed to spending at least 93p of every £1 donated directly on charitable activities.

Originally founded by Abraham Colfe in 1652, the school’s long history as a boys’ school changed forty years ago with the introduction of girls to the sixth form, and for the past twenty years it has been co-educational with girls throughout the school from ages 3-18. Through its award-winning pastoral care programmes, the school makes a particular focus on preparing pupils for real life, not just for exams. The school helps students develop the personal and social skills they will need in their home life and their careers, from teamwork and mentoring to budgeting and planning.

To help schools get red-y for a day of fundraising and events, teachers can now pre-order a free fundraising pack tailored specifically for primary schools. The packs are bursting with ideas – fundraising guides, posters, stickers and balloons – to help ensure schools will have an unforgettable time. Comic Relief also offers school curriculum materials and videos that teachers can use to help raise awareness of the world around them and those living incredibly tough lives. Bromley High School In the digital world, correspondence is predominantly directed through emails, messaging and social media and it could be argued that keyboard skills have taken precedence over pencil skills. At Bromley High Junior School, they know that girls have grown up with and are confident using a wealth of digital devices. However, whilst keyboard skills are learnt from an early age, they believe that the link between learning and writing by hand is of greater significance to girls in the early stages of their development and is an important skill to master. Handwriting at Bromley High is about building on a desire to communicate through mark-making from an early age. It is a movement skill that improves as each girl develops increased control and coordination in both fine and gross motor skills. The learning of basic letter formation is firmly embedded in Bromley High’s curriculum with a joined script being taught from the beginning of Reception. Attention is given to the positive correlation between handwriting, reading, and spelling skills using a multi-sensory approach to help reinforce early achievement across these areas. When handwriting becomes instinctive, there is time to focus on the higher-level aspects of composition and content. As Bromley High girls leave the Junior School they have the ability to present their work through either a digital or handwritten medium, demonstrating both to an equally high standard. Year 7 pupils from Bexley Grammar school talked to Primary Times about life at the school, and gave advice to prospective Year 6 pupils. “It felt really strange, wandering around the school hallways of Bexley Grammar on my first day. Being surrounded by almost totally different people in a new class was something I had anticipated, but hadn’t necessarily looked forward to. But by the end of the school day, I realised secondary school wasn’t as scary as I imagined.” “I think that my transition from primary school to secondary school has been truly phenomenal. If I showed myself, a year ago, what I am doing now, I would never have believed it.” “I had no-one from my primary school in my form, yet I soon found out that I used to play cricket with two girls in my form and they’re now two of my best friends. I also found out that no matter how scary older pupils may seem, they’re harmless and actually very helpful as you learn to find your way around.” “This year I joined two choirs, netball, football, rounders, basketball, tennis, table tennis and I was in the end of year production ‘School of Rock’. This has involved mixing with children from other forms and year groups and has widened my friendship group even more.” “The most important things you can do are make new friends, get involved and enjoy yourself.” For a flavour of this rich school life, you can see Bexley Grammar School’s weekly newsletters at www.bexleygs.co.uk.

Blackheath High School GDST inspires girls aged 3-18 years to aim high, think big and love learning. Teachers are passionate subject experts who make the most of small classes to engage students in a vibrant and aspirational atmosphere. The senior school at the Vanbrugh Park site, nestled between the beautiful Greenwich Park and leafy Blackheath Village, has been under major construction for the last five years. An £18 million investment in new school buildings and state of the art facilities is due for completion this academic year. The new facilities will be available for the local community to hire outside of school hours. The multi-million pound transformation of facilities will include a brand new library and resources centre, enhanced learning environments for art, design and technology and Music, expanded gallery and exhibition spaces and a new courtyard at the heart of the school. The re-development will ensure an optimum environment for the students to thrive in a huge variety of pursuits and subjects. With over 80 co-curricular clubs offered to students from Tech Future Girls to Mindfulness, and from Eco Club to rowing at the Royal Albert Dock, Blackheath High School helps each individual girl thrive both academically and personally to unlock their full potential. Plumstead Manor

Babington House School

Recently judged by Ofsted as being a ‘Good’ school, the core values of success, harmony, excellence and justice enable every young person at Plumstead Manor to release their full potential throughout their seven year secondary school journey.

Babington House School in Chislehurst continues to grow and develop. Building work has just been completed adding four additional classrooms, creating additional space throughout the school and additional teaching space for Sixth Form pupils.

Support is personalised for students, giving each of them access to a broad and balanced curriculum across academic and vocational pathways, enhanced by a wealth of enrichment opportunities.

The school are busy planning the curriculum for next year. As a small team of teachers, their Heads of Department have the advantage of working closely together to ensure cross curricular teaching is fostered and delivered. This is one of Babington’s strengths, they can tailor GCSE and A level teaching to support each other’s subjects and therefore give unprecedented support to the pupils.

The school has a dedicated team of staff responsible for making sure that students are settled, stretched and challenged from the moment they join the school, and is the basis on which they open up an extensive range of opportunities to learn, grow and succeed. Regular curriculum and parents’ evenings and forums give parents the opportunity to work in partnership with teachers to support their child’s learning and to steer the future of the school. Facilities at the school include a new performing arts theatre complex with music, dance and drama studios. All buildings have been refurbished and are open to students from 8am until 5pm, offering a wide variety of sports, performing arts and special interest clubs to further cultivate the highest expectations for academic scholarship, outstanding behaviour and personal development. Dance is particularly popular, enabling girls to develop a positive self-image and a grounded sense of self, while the Science and Technology provision enables large numbers to pursue careers in science, computing and medicine. With such an education, girls have a duty to grow into young women who desire to improve the world for others. As leaders of the future they learn to give and the value of service. Townley Grammar School has been recognized with multiple awards including being ‘Highly Commended’ by the DFE in the National Character Education Awards and recipients of the Mayor of London’s Excellence in Music Award. Townley students have been winners of the National Articulation Award, the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge Grand Final and the Bexley Young Musician of the Year Award to name but a few. With impressive facilities across 17 acres including sports fields, a full working theatre, dance and drama studios, a recording studio and now a state of the art computing facility and new dining space, Townley has so much to offer. Step Up Performing Arts

Step Up Performing Arts was set up 21 years ago by Blackheath Singer Nathalie Richardson. After she left The Guildhall School of Music she wanted to establish a school which encourages self-confidence and discipline whilst giving children a great time doing singing, dancing and acting. Nathalie has had many notable successes over the years with groups such as Soul Mates who won CBBC Comic Relief does Glee Club, and Soul Train who appeared on BBC One’s Pitch Battle last year and Channel Five’s Don’t Stop Believing. She also has many children performing in West End shows such as Matilda and The Lion King. As well as her continuing performing arts classes, Richardson is now offering individual classes in Street Dance, Drama and Performing Arts for ages 2-16. She currently runs RIMU Music Day Nursery that was rated outstanding last year and has responded to the huge demand to offer performance classes to toddlers. All children at RIMU have classes in the performing arts as part of their dedicated music programme and many move on to Step Up at age 4. Richardson has now decided to extend this to toddlers from 2 years of age. If you’re interested in Step Up, you can go to their open morning on 8 or 9 September for a free trial where children can try the different classes. To book your session, call 020 8293 5848 or for more information, please visit www.stepupschool.co.uk.

They understand parents can’t always afford to pay for classes termly and so allow you to pay monthly and take payments automatically so you don’t have to worry. The coaches are all professional and highly skilled, J’amies are proud of each and every one of them. During Half Terms and school holidays there are workshops at the Shirley and Chislehurst Academies. These run Monday - Friday, 10am-3pm for only £20 per child. If you can’t make the whole day, they offer an Open Gymnastics Hour between 12noon and 1pm for only £7. The workshops are hugely popular so book quickly to avoid disappointment. If you’re interested in signing your child up for a class, please visit www.jamiesgymnasticsacademy.co.uk and create an account to view the classes. Free trial sessions are available to book online or by contacting their friendly admin team on 020 8464 1477 or by emailing info@jgagroup.co.uk.

Stagecoach

According to the charity Young Minds, an average of three children in every classroom suffers from a diagnosable mental health problem such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder. This is a staggering statistic and as a parent, not something you ever want your child to have to deal with. Her not for profit company, Nano Girl Labs, works to inspire, educate and empower girls across the world. Dickinson has combined science and cooking in a fabulous new book that will ensure hours of entertainment for the kids to share with parents, grandparents, friends and siblings. The Kitchen Science Cookbook is a beautiful and lovingly crafted recipe book with a unique twist – each recipe is a science experiment that you can do at home with your family using the everyday ingredients you’ll have to hand in your kitchen. Each of the 50 recipes contains a simple introduction explaining what the experiment is about, and there are icons identifying important details such as if the recipe is edible, if it requires time to set or if there are safety issues that the reader needs to be aware of. The Kitchen Science Cookbook is packed full of fun experiments families can do at home, such as building a solar oven from cardboard and foil that will actually bake cookies, making bread in a bag and butter in a jam jar, making edible earthworms and creating instant ice cream.
