Whatever the Weather! Fun Days Out with the Family Red House

Get in the festive spirit this winter and explore Red House when it is decorated for Christmas. The house is hung with boughs of dried hops and sheaves of lavender, with a mistletoe kissing bough and giant tree traditionally decorated with popcorn, dried oranges and cinnamon. These traditional decorations are the same as the ones William Morris and his family would have decorated with in the 1860s. There are plenty of activities to get everyone feeling festive too. Winter Wassail will take place on 24 and 25 November and 1, 2, 8, 9 and 15 December. Help revive some ancient traditions and follow the wassail trail around the house and gardens to discover the ancient traditions of the area. Make a bird feeder for robins, thought to be the protector of the

orchard, make some noise and scare away the bad spirits and feed the apple tree man with the last of the year’s cider. If you’re looking for something more traditional, go along to the house’s wreath making workshop on 3 December, or get into the festive spirit and enjoy the medieval music of Cancionero with traditional folk music and Christmas carols on 8 December. Christmas at Broadway Shopping Centre

Once inside, journey through the departure lounge which will eventually lead you to the man in red himself where he will be waiting with gifts from the North Pole. The North Pole Airways will launch in line with Bexleyheath’s town centre light switch-on and the grand opening of the all new Yule Village. The family-friendly Yule Village gives visitors the opportunity to experience traditional Scandinavian celebrations and explore the mythical Nordic Forest where visitors can experience the Northern Lights. There’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained inside the four giant tipis including a talking reindeer, lots of picture opportunities and seating to enjoy

Recorder ensemble Palisander will be hosting a family concert, ‘Recorder Revolution’ on Sunday 2 December at 3pm to show children just how many different types of recorder there are and exactly what they can do. Together with regular children’s theatre throughout the year, there is plenty going on through Christmas and into the spring at Blackheath Halls. New casting has recently been announced for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda the Musical. Inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved book about a small girl with big dreams, ambitions and a passion for reading, the musical features hit songs and choreography that are loved by all ages. Matilda the Musical

Almost as central to the festive season as turkey and mince pies, we have all seen the shops filling up with Christmas jumpers. Knitmas: A Winter Yarn tells the story of LongSleeves, a jumper whose arms aren’t the right size or the same length. One Christmas he was unwrapped, thrown aside and forgotten and he’s been alone ever since. Every Christmas he decorates a tree in the forest of Odds and Bods but this year, maybe he won’t have to do it alone. Following last year’s Snowpocalypse, the company will once again run free pre-show craft workshops for children coming to the show, where everyone will make something to help our heroes light up the forest and realise that they are not alone in this mischievous and magical world. Creators Kezia Cole and Richard Hay told Primary Times, “It’s great to be returning to Greenwich Theatre again, last year was such a brilliant experience and got us feeling super Christmassy, so this year we are back with even more glitter and mischief. Knitmas is all about bringing people together and making sure that no one is forgotten, especially at this time of year.” Knitmas: A Winter Yarn plays from 4-30 December. For tickets and information, visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk.

Out of School Activities Train Like A Jedi

Public Health England (PHE) and Disney UK are launching a brand new national Change4Life Train Like A Jedi programme which will inspire children to get active. The new programme uses the excitement of Star Wars™ and its characters alongside Double Olympic Gold medallist Jade Jones to encourage children to Train Like A Jedi, and is designed to increase levels of physical activity amongst children in England. It is recommended that children do at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day, yet just 23% of boys and 20% of girls aged 5 to 15 years currently meet this recommendation. A new survey from PHE and Disney found that over 4 in 5 children (82%) would be inspired to move more if they saw their favourite characters being active. With Star Wars characters ranking as key favourites amongst UK children aged 7-11, the programme aims to make physical activity more fun. Building a new generation of Resistance recruits, Jones, alongside a special appearance from BB-8, leads children through a series of Jedi inspired moves in an exciting new play along video. Taking inspiration from the traits of iconic Jedi such as Luke Skywalker and Rey, the video helps children learn and master six key skills – technique, strength, stamina, speed, agility and mastery. The sequence of moves has been specially designed to increase children’s heart rates and benefit health. For more resources and to view the video, please visit www.campaignresources.phe.gov.uk.

Education News RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch

Every year, educators from every corner of the UK take part in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch, turning their pupils into conservation scientists and helping the RSPB track the ups and downs of birds across the country. There are a host of different activity ideas on the website that you and your class can do, both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as resources and videos. 73,000 school children and teachers took part in the birdwatch in 2017 counting more than 100,000 birds. The blackbird remained the most common playground visitor for the ninth year in succession with over 88% of schools spotting at least one. The top three was rounded off by the starling and woodpigeon.

The Birdwatch takes just one hour and teachers can pick any day during the first half of the spring term to take part. It works across a wide age and ability range and there’s plenty of flexibility to run it as simply as teachers would like either as the centrepiece of cross-curricular studies, project work, or a way to improve their outdoor space. Registration is open and the final day for results submission is the 22 February. After this the RSPB will share the results of your surveys so your class can see how their research is contributing. Inspiring Teachers, Inspiring Children Babington House School in Chislehurst is the top small independent school in England for A level results 2018 and 3rd in the UK with 68% A* and A grades. Babington continues to grow and develop. Building work has just been completed adding four additional classrooms, creating additional space throughout the school and additional teaching space for Sixth Form pupils. The school has almost 400 pupils from age 3 to 18 and from September 2019 will be accepting boys into the Senior School in Year 7. Being a small school has big advantages. Heads of Department have the advantage of working closely together to ensure cross curricular teaching is fostered and delivered. This is a key strength, they can tailor GCSE and A level teaching to support each other’s subjects, therefore giving unprecedented support to the pupils. Headmaster, Tim Lello told Primary Times, “Our commitment to provide an academic and well-rounded education with small class sizes, tailored to the needs of our pupils is really paying off, our pupils and parents are happy and we are achieving excellent results.” Go and see for yourself - call 020 8467 5537 to make an appointment or visit www.babingtonhouse.com

Education News

In addition to the varied curriculum, pupils also take part in specialist subject areas such as music, PE, computing and French which are taught by charismatic specialist staff. Forest School is also available for the Reception class, where children are encouraged to develop their independence, safety and resilience skills in Bishop Challoner’s own Forest School site. A number of extra-curricular activities are provided for children, these include gymnastics, ballet, taekwondo and French. Learning also takes place outside of the classroom environment. Pupils attend exciting and enhancing school trips aimed to enrich their education. The Reception class recently enjoyed a visit to the Churchill Theatre to watch a household favourite, ‘The Gruffalo’. Bishop Challoner’s most recent inspection identified, “Children in EYFS display excellent attitude to learning. They are independent learners who are keen to explore their environment. They display resilience and a willingness to work collaboratively.” To find out more and to visit their vibrant Reception class, please email admissions@bishopchallonerschool.com or visit www.bishopchallonerschool.com

Listen Out for Owls The British Trust for Ornithology is asking the great British public to participate in a national study of Tawny Owls and their calling behaviour by listening out for them this autumn and winter. Tawny Owl populations are thought to be in decline and the species has recently been added to the Amber List of Birds of Conservation Concern. The Tawny Owl is arguably our best known owl. Even if you have never seen one you will probably recognise the ‘twit-twoo’ call uttered in harmony by a pair of Tawny Owls. The call of the female is an eerie ‘kewick’ and that of the male in reply is a shivering, ‘whoo’. Put together and you get ‘kewick-whoo’ or put another way, ‘twit-twoo’. Anyone can participate, and parents, teachers and children are asked to listen out for calling Tawny Owls from their garden, local park or piece of woodland. Register online at www.bto.org/owls or email gbw@bto.org for more information. The survey runs until 31 March 2019. You don’t have to commit to listening every week, but you’ll be providing valuable data by recording for as many weeks as you can. It is just as important, if you take part, to tell BTO if you don’t hear an owl. They will then know where there aren’t any owls and you can consider yourself a ‘zero hero’. 20
