Win School Equipment and a Class Sleepover
This Easter, Aquafresh are kicking-off the season with the launch of its Inventors Academy competition, giving schools the opportunity to win £1,000 worth of equipment and a whole class sleepover at the Science Museum.
Fostering New Starts with Chrysalis Care
However you acknowledge it, Easter is undoubtedly a time of birth, new beginnings and fresh starts. As school holidays also feature, it’s a time for making wonderful family memories. Maybe you have shared some fantastic Easter experiences and with room for one or two more in your camp, you have wondered if fostering is for you? That’s a great start. The founders of Chrysalis Care took the very same step, more than 35 years ago, becoming a fostering family along with their three young daughters. Fifteen years later, in 1997, they created Chrysalis Care, a family-run fostering agency and, over more than 20 years, have helped hundreds of families share memorable experiences with children and young people who really need a fresh start. Foster carers are based across London, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and benefit from expert 24-hour advice, guidance, training and support. If a new beginning is on your mind and you want to join in transforming lives through fostering children and young people, contact Chrysalis Care to speak with a friendly and knowledgeable member of staff. Call 020 8298 2800, email info@ chrysaliscare.org or visit www.chrysaliscarefostering.org.
What about Me?
Samantha Francis, a mum of two girls residing in South London, has published a book called “What about me?”. What about me? is a story told from four year old Shannon’s perspective and expresses clearly what her thoughts and feelings are around the arrival of her new sister. The story shows the journey and process of emotions that as adults we often dismiss, however by providing emotional space for her, there is a resolution and a reassuring ending for Shannon and her baby sister Maya. The book has been praised and requested by Southwark CAMHS as they felt it tapped into the emotions of the child extremely well and talked about an issue that is all too common in many families. It is also currently in the process of being stocked by Southwark libraries. This is a simple and easy to read book that can be read to the child struggling with the new situation or can be used as a work book for both parent and child together. Samantha Francis is a Holistic Consultant and Coach. She has worked alongside women’s and children’s charities and regularly runs her creative and therapeutic workshops. What about Me? is available from Amazon or to order from other book shops.

Open to every primary school within the UK, the competition encourages teachers to focus on the importance of oral hygiene linked to the National Curriculum, whilst bringing fun to the subject with an invention competition. This engaging activity has been created to support the brand’s new Aquafresh Advance 9-12 range, whilst helping to educate children on the importance of good oral hygiene. What can UK kids do to make it more fun? Aquafresh has the answer! Children will be tasked with creating their very own innovation to make brush time more enjoyable. Using a simple entry form, parents will then be asked to upload their child’s invention to the Aquafresh Inventors Academy microsite, www. aquafreshinventorsacademy.com giving their child the chance to win an exclusive sleepover at the Science Museum. Teachers are encouraged to download fully comprehensive lesson plans, presentations and materials at www. aquafreshinventorsacademy.com to share with their pupils and get them excited about good oral hygiene and brushing their teeth. The competition is open for entries for children between the ages of 7 and 11 until 31 May, so get brushing-up on your funvention lessons and ideas following the Easter break.

25 Years of Celebration in Dulwich The Dulwich Festival returns this spring from 11 to 20 May. To mark the Festival’s 25th Anniversary, this year’s theme is ‘celebration’ and there promises to be plenty of family fun to be had including live music, children’s theatre and not one but two fairs. The Children’s Art Competition this year wants to know what celebration means to you and the theme continues at the Children’s Concert. Budding scientists can catch John Hinton’s Ensonglopedia of Science, a song about science for every letter of the alphabet. Expect atoms, big bangs and expect it to rhyme. For those more acrobatically inclined there’s a Circus Skills Workshop to try your hand at some new party tricks. From donkey rides at the Festival Fair on Goose Green on Sunday 13 May, to Steam Fair rides and Vauxhall City Farm at the Dulwich Park Fair on 20 May, the fairs get bigger and better each year and provides free entertainment for all ages. For tickets and more information see the website www. dulwichfestival.co.uk.
We all love celebrating. What does celebration mean to you? The Dulwich Festival is inviting children of all ages to enter this year’s Children’s Art Competition. Please check the Dulwich Festival website for details. Deadline 4pm, Friday 4 May. Kindly sponsored by

Welcome to Underbelly Festival
Underbelly Festival is back for its tenth year on the Southbank with an incredible line-up, including headline shows from four countries across four different continents by some of the finest purveyors of circus in the world. Beyond the intercontinental feast of circus, Underbelly Festival is celebrating a decade as London’s home of spring and summer comedy with shows by a host of the country’s finest comedians. This is just a flavour of the full programme of comedy, circus, cabaret, variety and family fun taking place daily from April until the end of September in two spectacular venues, both set within a buzzing festival site which features some of London’s finest outdoor bars, offering a sumptuous range of food and drink. Children are Stinky
Circus Trick Tease, the winners of the coveted Children’s Choice Award and five star sell out Edinburgh Fringe sensation, are bringing their exciting kid’s comedy, Children are Stinky to London. High calibre circus, a rocking soundtrack and genuine belly laughs propelled the Australian acrobatic duo into a smash hit, multi award winning whirlwind year. With packed out shows across China and Australia, it’s best to book in advance. The duo’s attempts to prove that kids are stinky are met with messy, ridiculous, hysterical twists. They only succeed in proving that children are awesome and they know it.

The Very Circusy Caterpillar
The world first met The Very Hungry Caterpillar in 1969 but The Very Circusy Caterpillar is a little cheekier, a lot more peckish and much more circusy! This fun and interactive show sees our ravenous friend take to the stage to juggle plums, hula-hoop fruit and tell a few silly stories that will have your little one in fits of giggles. It’s the perfect show for your child’s first experience of live performance and is sure to induce a little nostalgia for the adults. Having first appeared at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2011, Happy Haps Productions has taken the show on tour to some of Australia’s most diverse and remote festivals. In 2018 it returned to the Adelaide Fringe and received rave reviews. Broadway Baby said, “The Very Circusy Caterpillar is a show aimed directly and oh so successfully at the little ones.” while the Adelaide Advertiser commented, ‘“I couldn’t do that” gasps one four-year-old, as his jaw drops, eyes wide. But the best trick is the flying finale, from the beautiful butterfly.’

Whilst the other children go to parties and makeovers, Loretta can only watch through the window of her tablet, with regular ‘beeps’ to remind her of everything she is missing out on. Greenwich Theatre’s artistic director, James Haddrell told Primary Times, “I see no reason why children will be any less able to engage with these issues than adults… A trip to the theatre can create a life-long interest in a particular topic, and I am sure that whilst children seeing these two shows will certainly be hugely entertained, they will also come away energised and excited about two issues of major importance to our future.”
Engaging Kids with Politics through Theatre
For show dates and prices visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk.
The programme at Greenwich Theatre always features a range of family shows of different types and for different age groups, but one area that the team at Greenwich is tackling this season is political theatre – productions that challenge children to engage with and form opinions about political or social issues that affect the world around them. On 2 April, they present a special performance of Me and My Bee. The show is described by Josie DaleJones, one of the show’s creators, as “a political party disguised as a party party disguised as a show. It encourages adults and children alike to recognise the risk to our planet caused by the ever-increasing threat to the survival of bees.” Later in the month, the theatre presents The Bone Ensemble’s Where’s My Igloo Gone, a magical, interactive performance about a young girl and the impact of global warming.

The Ghanaian King Togbui Adamah II, an Anl E e, ruled the Some people from 1915 until 1963. Drawing on BCA’s collection of historical materials you’ll learn about Togbui’s amazing story, protecting his people and heralding their cultural traditions. Three rooms have been transformed to present an incredibly detailed snapshot of everyday life in Ghana. Family Ties captures stories held within traditional archives and those woven into the cloths, family legacies, oral stories and legends handed down over generations. You’ll be reminded of the importance of passing on traditions to future generations across the African Diaspora. This is a bold presentation of a family history that reaches across the seas from Ghana to Britain. This story, of an everyday Black family in Britain, could be any of our stories. BCA’s mission is to help discover these hidden treasures and weave them into the national conversation.

Schoolchildren Re-use Art at the Tate Modern
What’s crochet got to do with computers? In February around 120 pupils from South London primary schools explored just that question at the Tate Modern as part of the Tate Exchange programme. Nine and ten year old pupils from four south London schools – Archbishop Sumner Primary, Christ Church Streatham Primary, St Jude’s Primary and Woodmansterne Primary – were involved in the project. Working with London Connected Learning Centre, which supports schools to use digital technologies to enhance learning, the students responded to Tate Modern’s collection as part of an investigation into reusing, remaking and remixing. The children explored the similarities between computational thinking, programming and craft, such as crochet and knitting, through hands-on making using digital technologies and recycled materials. This year’s theme was ‘production’ and the pupils were encouraged to think about production and consumption and how digital technologies and innovation have changed the process of designing and making. Pupils looked at how materials and processes are used in the works on display in the Tate gallery, why they have been used and how this might change the way they see the art. London Connected Learning Centre is a Tate Exchange Associate and it is the second year it has involved London schools in the programme. Find out more at www.londonclc.org.uk. To find out more about Tate Exchange visit www.tate.org.uk/tateexchange.
National Young Writers
The National Young Writers’ Awards returns with a bang as best-selling children’s author David Walliams is this year’s judge. The competition, organised by Explore Learning has been running for ten years and has inspired hundreds of thousands of children across the UK to put pen to paper. The competition is open to all children aged 4-14 and this year’s theme is ‘Heroes’. Children are invited to write a 500 word story all about a hero. This could be an everyday hero or a superhero. The winner will be surprised at a school assembly by David Walliams who will present them with their trophy, a trip to Disneyland Paris for their family and £500 of books for their school! David told Primary Times, “It is a real privilege to be named judge for this year’s National Young Writers’ Awards and I am so looking forward to reading what the brilliant brains of our country’s children come up with. To write is such a wonderful, creative outlet for people of all ages and competitions just like this one are a fantastic way of encouraging kids across the UK to take the leap and release their inner authors.” Pick up an entry form from your local Explore Learning centre and return the completed entry before Sunday 29 April or enter online at www.explorelearning.co.uk/youngwriters.

Over the last two years, St Olave’s Parents’ Association has successfully run Familiarisation Mock tests for boys and girls in Year 5. It is a great way to gain experience of an 11+ test, especially the St Olave’s Stage 1 entrance test (SET) for which it matches the format, difficulty and environment. The four main sections covered are English comprehension, mathematics, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Papers are electronically marked and personalised feedback is given to all parents. Feedback from previous years included comments that the tests were professionally run and that sitting the mock helped their child to feel more relaxed when taking the actual SET. Mock tests are available at St Olave’s Grammar School on Saturdays in June. The cost is £60, but there are free places available to parents unable to afford this. Please visit www.saintolavespa.net for more information and to book.

Computer Coding Holiday Workshops
Computational thinking – the instinctive ability to understand how computers behave, and by extension, how to command a computer to do your bidding – is as important as numeracy and literacy in today’s world. Spark4Kids specialises in teaching kids how to write software, by introducing computer coding through games design. Within a fun and supportive environment, children are actively encouraged to explore and make mistakes with coding, helping them naturally develop their ability to instinctively solve computational problems. An oft-overlooked aspect of coding is how much of a creative outlet it can be for kids, enabling them to express their own thoughts and ideas. When children learn to code by trying out their own ideas, they start to think of themselves as creators and not just consumers of technology.
