Here in the office we are getting egg-stremely egg-cited at the thought of all that chocolate coming our way. We’re hoping that it will be an egg-ceptional eggstravaganza..... No eggs-aggeration! March - May is a busy period with lots happening. Don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 31 March. Home-made presents/cards always go down well... Bad news for mothers this year though as the clocks go forward on 31 March so one hour less to celebrate. Then Easter Weekend is 19-22 April. As you can tell our office love chocolate so that’s one we’ll be getting egg-cited about. Looking up dates we came across National Teachers’ Day on 7 May. It says “a day for honouring teachers and recognising the lasting contributions they make to our lives.” Time to make your teacher feel special. As usual we have lots of competitions to enter in this issue. Entries can be sent by post to the address to the left or they can be emailed to competitions@ primarytimes.biz but please always mention the competition you are entering and include your personal details so that we can send you your prize if you win one. Have an egg-cellent (sorry!) holiday and we’ll be back on 13 May.

Enormous Elephant Fun Run The hugely popular Enormous Elephant Run is returning to Clapham Common on Saturday 8 June. Organisers are inviting Clapham’s families, animal lovers and fitness fans to take on their unique 5k or 10k challenge and raise much-needed funds for the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. One of East Africa’s oldest and most pioneering conservation charities, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust operates a world-famous Nursery for orphaned elephants. Early bird registration starts from £22 per adult and £9 for children. Dressing up is not required. For more information, please visit www.enormouselephantrun.com. Director Adam Bampton-Smith told Primary Times, “This is a wonderful show for young ones and there’s also lots to keep the grown-ups entertained! The reaction of children all over the country to the monsters has been fantastic because it really brings the book to life right in front of their eyes.” We also heard from two young theatre-goers. Philip, age 7, said, “I thought the monster-making machine was fantastic!” and Zoe, age 5, told us, “My best bit was when the little monsters were fighting and then the big monster came in!”

Chores

After sold-out seasons at Brighton and Edinburgh Fringes in 2018, Chores is coming back to the UK, and this time the boys are going everywhere! Their first stop is Underbelly Festival in Southbank. From 16 to 19 April, check out the enthusiastic fun that is Chores. A comedy-circus show from Australia, Chores is the story of two brothers who have to clean up their messy room so they can ride their bicycles. A storyline we can all relate to, this show is jam-packed full of cool stunts, acrobatic flips, unicycles, juggling, and the infamous toilet paper guns! Chores performer Julian told Primary Times, “Chores is the return to the good old days of pure entertainment, where bringing joy is priority number one. Operating at an extremely high LPM, (laughs per minute), we love it when parents enjoy the show as much as kids do!” Last year Chores was proud to receive a few awards, including a nomination for Best Children’s Show at Perth Fringe, A Weekly Award for Best Kids show at Adelaide Fringe, and the Audience Choice Award at Prague Fringe. This year, they are heading off on a huge tour, starting in London finishing in Edinburgh. Head over to their Facebook page or Instagram - both Choreshooplaclique – to check out cool videos and photos and see all the venues they are heading for. Photo credit: Embellish Photography

World of Work Trails

Unpack all our city has to offer with the London Curriculum World of Work Trails and take the family out to explore some exciting areas of London this spring and summer. Last year, the Mayor’s London Curriculum team launched a series of World of Work trails for schools and families. The aim is to inspire children to start thinking about careers in London and what’s on offer in this brilliant city. The trails cover different areas of London – Southwark, Covent Garden, Old Street, Shoreditch and Stratford, with Brixton coming soon! Each trail has a different theme and includes all kinds of activities and information about types of work that children might do when they’re older. Children will learn about jobs from the past, discover the work people do today and imagine what work might be like in the future. The London Curriculum is a fun way of teaching young people about the city using London as a classroom. Schools in London are already enjoying free primary and secondary teaching resources. With these trails, parents and carers can join in too.

Dream to be Different

BRIT Kids at The BRIT School offers a full day of classes from 9.30am–3.30pm. They have now gone National and are forming partnerships with other schools to offer BRIT Kids around the country. www.BRITKids.org is their new website, meaning that applying is just a few clicks away! BRIT Kids is deeply rooted in education and offers children the opportunity to explore the creative and performing arts through a safe, welcoming and fun environment. It is through this energy and

creativity that the children find a way to build confidence, make new friends and gain a feeling that they belong to something really rather special. BRIT Kids is very much part of The BRIT School, meaning that the classes are of a high standard in state of the art studios, workshops and suites. Class content is free thinking, expressive and challenging for the students. Don’t just take their word for it…. Primary Times spoke to a parent and she told us, “My daughter started at Brit Kids when she was in Year 7 and is just completing Year 13 and has thoroughly enjoyed it and was so pleased when they opened up Brit Kids to 16+ year olds. She has accepted a place to study Film Production at University a subject she may not even have thought about without her experience at Brit Kids, experience which I am sure helped her secure an offer.”

Out of School Activities

They obviously had her complete attention - her eagerness was so obvious when I collected her. I can honestly say I’ve never seen her so enthralled by a class.” The Easter workshops run on 8, 9, 11 or 12 April from 9.30am – 1.30pm and run in Herne Hill, Streatham, Sydenham and Clapham. Workshops cost £30 or £25 with a sibling discount. For videos, full details and booking form, visit www.funkymonkey.info or call 01732 457 100.

Education News

St Dunstan’s College

Girls and boys join St Dunstan’s College Senior School from a large number of preparatory and primary schools across South East London and beyond. Moving from junior school to senior school is a major milestone in a child’s life. Parents and children alike may feel nervous about the transition - so many new people to meet, new buildings to navigate and new subjects to delve into – it can seem overwhelming! However, St Dunstan’s relatively small size allows for new students to settle in very quickly. They help them along the way by running a New Joiners’ Induction Day at the beginning of each Michaelmas Term during which the College is open only to new students. During the Induction Day, students get to know their Form Tutors, subject teachers and classmates as well as how to find their classes and College facilities.

Harris Academy, South Norwood aims to provide for the most exciting future for your child. Their teachers strive so that pupils’ future will be one of both promise and achievement. They lead with professionalism and scholarship. Support staff welcome parents and provide you and your child with academic and pastoral care and advice. Harris Academy, South Norwood is a single Academy for girls and boys aged 11–19 across two sites which allows them to offer a broad curriculum. The same teachers and leaders serve both sites. There is a thriving Sixth Form. The two excellent sites, one in South Norwood and one in Upper Norwood have a single ethos. Both sites provide students with the very best in technology and resources. Their close partnership with the Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form further widens the subjects students can choose. This spring they are celebrating the sporting success of one of their members of staff, Jamie Webb, who won a silver medal in this year’s 800m European Indoor final. They’re sure that he will pass his inspiration on to the students at Harris Academy South Norwood so that all the students learn to become leaders and all grow into young adults with courtesy and ambition. They want every single student to fulfil their aspirations and to go on to lead happy, thriving and successful adult lives.

Schools Gear Up for the Big Pedal

This week, starting 25 March, nearly 1,400 schools are taking part in Sustrans Big Pedal 2019 – the UK’s largest cycling, walking and scooting challenge for schools. This year’s competition is backed by Angellica Bell, British television, radio presenter and cycling advocate. Organised by the walking and cycling charity Sustrans, the competition will run from Monday 25 March to Friday 5 April and will encourage young people from across the UK to travel by bike, foot or scooter for their journey to and from school. During the 10 days, participating primary and secondary schools will compete with one another to make the most journeys by bike, foot or scooter. To coincide with this year’s event, dozens of schools across the UK will, for the first time, be closing the road outside the school gates to motor vehicles. This is to limit the volume of traffic and help reduce air pollution, while creating an environment in which cycling and walking is safe, convenient and enjoyable. The theme of this year’s Big Pedal is ‘Travelling around the body’, with pupils tracking their progress on a wall chart, learning about the human body and how active travel benefits their health as they go. This year’s competition aims to build on the success of 2018 which saw over 1,300 schools register to take part with teachers, parents, siblings and pupils making more than a million journeys to school by bike or scooter. For more information about the event, please visit www.bigpedal.org.uk Photo credit: ©Sustrans/Paul Tanner

Rounders for Primary Schools

Rounders England has launched a national rounders competition for primary schools which is aimed at broadening social circles and creating a fun way to keep active. The event – Primary Ready Rounders – is designed to promote the social and fun aspects of rounders on a national scale to both broaden its appeal to players and encourage more rounders to be played within the rounders community. Rounders England has put together a programme of events and competitions, which is made up of open contests for primary, secondary and independent schools. Community teams and leagues are also being encouraged to get involved by taking part in Roundersfest, a series of standalone open competitions for local teams that play in local leagues or for new teams formed by groups of friends. Schools can find out more and register their interest in taking part by visiting www.roundersengland.co.uk where they’ll find details of the competitions taking place in their area.

LEAF Open Farm School Days

LEAF Open Farm School Days is a nationwide initiative to get children out onto farms and learning about where their food comes from. Throughout June, farms open their gates and host educational visits for children to learn about how their food is produced and to meet the farmers who grow it. LEAF Open Farm School Days run alongside the annual LEAF Open Farm Sunday - a number of farmers do both.

The 4-Step Process for Easy Creative Writing

Creative writing can be so much fun for your child when they know what to write about and how to set about writing it. 1. Find Kick-Starters Ideas could be from a direct/ indirect experience, books, films, TV or stories your child has been told. These ideas can be tweaked. For example, your child could change the human in the original story to an animal. 2. Planning So that the story flows, your child considers all the elements of their creative piece and jots them down in bullet point form, in the right order. This plan can be edited as they write their story. 3. Proper execution The next step is to get writing. The aim is to keep the reader interested from start to finish. The introduction needs to be quite interesting. Think of books read or programmes watched; how did the scenes/chapters begin? Your child should feel free to borrow phrases. Have a dictionary, thesaurus and descriptosaurus to hand. 4 Proofread Once the piece has been written, be sure to get your child to proofread it. As the parent, try not to dwell on the grammar and spelling mistakes too much, but more on the ideas in the piece. If all of the above is implemented correctly, this will set your child on the path to becoming a very competent writer. If you still need help with your child’s creative writing skills, Leaders are Readers English Programme could be the perfect solution.
