Doorkins the Cathedral Cat Following the real life exploits of Southwark Cathedral’s self-proclaimed ‘Magnificat’, this charming picture book is written by Lisa Gutwein and illustrated by Rowan Ambrose, a dentist and member of the congregation. Meet Doorkins, the smallest yet most recognisable member of Southwark Cathedral. On one cold December morning of 2008, a feral cat was found sitting on the doorstep of Southwark Cathedral waiting for one of the Vergers to let her into the warmth. At first she was an occasional visitor, alternating between Cathedral comforts and the leftover scraps from Borough Market, but it didn’t take long for her to make the cathedral her permanent residence and she could be found waiting by the door each and every morning, hence the name, Doorkins. Nearly ten years on, Doorkins is an integral member of the Southwark Cathedral family and many visitors to the Cathedral leave with fond memories of her. Follow Doorkins to get a complete tour of the Cathedral - she’s sure to raise a smile for cat-lovers everywhere. Doorkins the Cathedral Cat is available from Amazon, high street bookshops and the Cathedral gift shop for £10.99.

This autumn, Black Cultural Archives celebrates the 100 years’ musical heritage. Journey through generations of musical history and memories learning about how Black British music migrated from the margins to mainstream. Celebrate the pioneers who made it happen and left an indelible imprint on British culture. Together families can enjoy a musical journey that starts with the early Jazz Era in 1919 moving to the arrival of carnival, heights of sound system culture through to the contemporary sounds of UK garage and grime. Located in the heart of Brixton on the historic Windrush Square, Black Cultural Archives is the only dedicated heritage centre to preserve and celebrate Black British history and culture. It’s a must-visit cultural destination for all the family. With a vibrant café and courtyard and gift shop, you can spend the afternoon truly immersing yourself and inspiring the next generation. Go along and learn more about British history from a unique perspective. Black Sound is on display until 4 November. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. For more information, visit www.bcaheritage.org.uk.

The Bumblebear was selected for BookTrust by an independent panel of experts and practitioners, who work with reception-aged children. It was the unanimous favourite with the panel for its quality of storytelling, relatable school setting and its ability to be read aloud in a lively manner. But most importantly, it sends a lovely message of inclusivity with a well-resolved fallible element. Find out more about how BookTrust inspires a love of reading in children across the UK at www.booktrust.org.uk.

Cook Home Made Fish Fingers The RNLI – the charity that saves lives at sea - is encouraging people across the UK to cook up a fish supper for friends and family and make a donation to this worthy cause. The Fish Supper is the RNLI’s annual campaign to raise money for the crew members who voluntarily give up dinner time with their families to respond to emergencies at sea. Fish Supper takes place between 13 and 15 October, but you can hold your dinner party on any date suitable for you. RNLI and their friends at Farmdrop, the ethical grocer have given us a recipe for fish fingers for you to try. Homemade fish fingers are super quick and easy to rustle up, a perfect dish to get your kids involved with. Farmdrop’s sustainable fillets of lemon sole from Lyme Bay Reserve have the most incredible delicate taste and tender flesh, the perfect base for a crunchy, herby breadcrumb coating. If you can’t get lemon sole fillets, you can use another sustainably caught white fish. We tried it with cod which worked well.

12

4 Sept - 8 Oct ‘17

Ingredients

180g white bread 1 lemon 2 lemon sole fillets 2 eggs 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp dried thyme 75g plain flour a pinch of salt and pepper

Here’s how you do it 1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

Preheat the oven to 200°C and lightly brush a flat baking tray with oil. Tear the bread into small chunks and blitz into breadcrumbs in a food processor. Tip the crumbs into a shallow dish, then mix in the dried herbs, the zest from the lemon and a pinch of salt and pepper. Slice your fish fillets into chunky fingers, around 2 inches thick. Crack the eggs into another shallow dish and lightly beat then pour the flour into a third shallow dish. Take a fish finger and dip into the beaten egg. Shake off the excess egg then dredge through the flour and shake. Dip in the egg again before coating with the breadcrumbs. Transfer your breaded fish finger to the baking tray and repeat with the rest. Bake your fish fingers for around 15 minutes, until the crumbs are golden and the fish inside flakey and delicate. Squeeze over the juice from half the lemon.

Chef’s Tip:

You can use any leftover bread you have lying around to make your breadcrumbs - white, brown, seeded, sourdough or even brioche. In fact, bread that’s a little past it’s best (stale not mouldy) makes the best breadcrumbs so think before you throw away the end of that French stick.

An Interview with Lauren Child Primary Times have been talking to Lauren Child, the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate. A writer and illustrator, she is best known for the Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort series. She has received numerous awards and was given an MBE in 2010 for her services to literature. Her latest book in the Charlie and Lola series, ‘A Dog With Nice Ears’, is due to be released on 28 September.

nine years old, and as soon as I finished it, I read it all over again. Another is Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking. I loved her because she was a child like no other. She was a girl and she was funny and there weren’t enough books about funny girls in those days. She’s very courageous and doesn’t really care what people think about her in the best possible way. She doesn’t worry about what she’s wearing and doing and she is able to be herself.

How does it feel to be the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate?

When you were growing up did you feel you could be yourself like Pippi Longstocking?

It is a great honour but it’s also a great responsibility. It feels slightly unreal too, partly because my career began almost 20 years ago, exactly the time Quentin Blake was the first Children’s Laureate. Quentin was a huge influence on my becoming an illustrator. I loved his illustrations really before I knew who he was as a person. There was the Grimble and the illustrations from Betsy Byers 18th Emergency, my favourite book as a child. And I remember watching him on television back in the days when the BBC had a programme called Jackanory. It was so wonderful to see live drawing as the story was told, and in fact Quentin Blake was the first illustrator I realised was an actual real person. It was so different in those days. You didn’t have the same chance to meet authors and illustrators as you do now.

What do you plan to do as Laureate?

I’m interested in championing children’s creativity and I want to encourage children to spend a little of their time looking, listening and making things because they’re driven to create. I’ll be starting a blog soon called ‘Staring Into Space’ where I’m going to hopefully help inspire that. I also want to champion reading and drawing for pleasure and to elevate children’s book illustration to the level of other art forms. I think illustration is seen as something less than fine art, and writing for children as slightly less than writing for adults. I think we can be a little bit patronising about it. That’s a shame, because we know that literature is life-changing for children and the first art we really get up close to is in books. That’s where we begin with reading and storytelling. We do children a disservice if we can’t see and celebrate its power. I also want to talk about diversity, as inclusivity is really important to me. There aren’t enough books written by and about people of all kinds of backgrounds and culture. It’s important because if as a child you don’t see yourself on the front cover of a book then how do you feel part of society?

Which books, authors and illustrators are your main inspirations? I have so many. When I was a child I loved The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I remember reading it when I was about

No. I was terrible at being myself. I was very self conscious and worried about what people were thinking - am I wearing the right thing, am I saying the right thing? All of my characters in my books now are at least moving in the direction of being themselves.

How important do you think it is for children to daydream and stare out of the window?

I think it’s vital. You can’t come up with anything without a certain amount of boredom, because boredom is the beginning of invention. Solving problems and letting your mind wander and find the edges of something. It’s how you get to an inspired place and become creative. When I get really stuck in my own work now, I go out and look around at things. I go to the cinema, an art gallery, I put on the radio, I tune into people’s conversations. You hear these amazing things. And when I hear or see something interesting I write it down. You end up with notebooks full of interesting things.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing a chapter book for younger readers, for around six to nine-year-olds. It’s very, very illustrated because I missed drawing so much when I was writing my Ruby Redfort series. So - lots of drawings. My new Charlie and Lola book A Dog With Nice Ears is coming out in the Autumn. It was inspired by looking at all the dogs in the park near our home with my daughter and imagining what kind of dog we would like to have.

Do you have any advice for children that are starting to write?

My advice would be to write what you enjoy. You need to write about something that interests you. It might be something funny that you see out of the window or something that you’ve imagined or about your family. You’ve got to enjoy what you’re writing or you won’t be able to carry on.You’ve got to let things develop, listen, and watch how people talk and interact. Dig deep into your own memory and try and tap into how things feel.

Lauren Child’s latest book in the Charlie and Lola series, ‘A Dog With Nice Ears’, is published by Orchard Books on 28 September and will be available from high street bookstores and online at a recommended priced of £12.99.

Choosing your New School

6.

Extra-curricular Activities

Not all learning takes place in the classroom, and it’s often in after school clubs that your child discovers something they are passionate for and may even want to pursue as a career. Extracurricular clubs also open your child up to new friendship groups as well as potentially being beneficial to their mainstream education.

7. Discipline

We all respond to discipline in different ways. Some thrive under supervision and strict rules whereas others find this limiting and hard to work under. Make sure to find out what disciplinary structures are in place at each school and determine which would work most effectively with your child.

The end of the summer holidays marks the beginning of the latest adventure in your child’s life – choosing a secondary school. This task doesn’t have to be a chore however. You and your child can work together to find the perfect place for them to learn, explore and grow. Here is a list of Primary Times’ top ten tips for choosing a school. 1.

Make a List

2.

Open Days

Even if you think you know which school you want to send your child to, it’s important to visit a few just in case, even if it’s just to reaffirm your original choice. Even the best schools can suit some children more than others. Once you have a list of schools in your area, check to make sure each one is logistically possible – does your child meet the entry requirements? Will they be able to travel there easily? Obviously it’s a good idea to visit all the schools you’re thinking of sending your child to. Pay special attention to the environment – you know your child better than anyone so you know best what working atmosphere is most effective for them. Chat to students as well as teachers. It’s good to know that the people teaching want to be there, but if you want a more honest perception of the school you’re more likely to get it from the students. One of the most important things to look for is whether they’re happy – a happy child inevitably means a better education.

3.

League Tables and Ofsted

4.

Grades and Statistics

With all the statistics floating around about schools, it’s hard to know which to trust. Ultimately these reports aren’t everything, especially as their conclusions are usually based on a few days in a school, but they are all still worth looking at. There is a great resource on the government’s performance information website (head to www.gov.co.uk) which gives a detailed and clear analysis of schools in your area. Of course it’s important to look at the grades the school has been achieving, remember to look at the overall statistics as opposed to just the ones from recent history. Final exam results may depend more on the calibre of the original than anything else but tables which purport to show ‘added value’ also have their drawbacks. Each school year can fluctuate significantly depending on the mix of students, so just because results have gone up/down in the last couple of years, it doesn’t mean the overall standard of teaching has. Look at the general pattern of results and compare these to others in the area.

5.

Word of Mouth

Chat to other parents and locals about the different schools. They may know things (both good and bad) which the schools themselves may not have mentioned. It’s always good to hear from other parents what they wish they had/hadn’t done in hindsight and which questions they wish they’d asked. 16

4 Sept - 8 Oct ‘17

8.

Equal Opportunities

9.

Where are their friends going?

10.

Where will your child be happiest?

If your child needs SEN support or struggles in a certain area, what structures are in place to aid them and to make sure they don’t fall behind? Although this shouldn’t dramatically affect your choice, it is worth taking into consideration. If your child finds making friends difficult then you don’t want to make moving schools harder with the added aspect of socialising. However this could also be a good opportunity for your child to boost their social skills, so it’s worth chatting it through to decide what is best. When going to open days or evenings make sure to note your child’s initial reaction and how this changes over the course of the event. Ultimately if your child is happy then that’s the best outcome, and hopefully that will be reflected in their results as well. Above all remember not to worry – despite what the media may say, the standard of our secondary schools is still very high and in many cases getting higher. You are simply picking the best environment to unlock your child’s potential.

It has been another bumper year for sixth form students at St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School. Head Girls, Princess Imoru and Oyin Akinsanya will be reading medicine at Birmingham and Leicester respectively and Bolu Soyebo will be reading Law at Oxford. Four girls are proving that Computer Science is not just a “male” subject - Hannah Voong, Kim-Anh Vu, Neriah Osie-Ampem and Adiam Daniel will be off to Kings, Leicester and Oxford Brookes to specialise in this fast growing science subject. Head of Sixth Form, John Breslin, told Primary Times, “For such a small cohort, our students achieve great results and in such a wide variety of subjects. We have “punched above our weight” for many years, with students achieving places on the best courses and at the most prestigious universities. This year is no different and our outcomes reflect on the hard work of staff and students alike.” About fifty per cent of the A levels were A*-B grade. Overall, four out of five A levels were graded “C” or above. Particular praise

Harris Academy Bermondsey

Harris Academy Bermondsey are #ProudToBeHAB of their 12 girls from Year 7 who have been chosen to join the HAB student leadership team. At Harris Academy Bermondsey, Student Leaders are an important part of school life in many ways. The 50-strong student leadership team is made up of girls from Years 7-10 who show visitors around the school, for example, and run tours for parents and prospective students on open days. Lyndsay Harris, Assistant Principal, told Primary Times, “It’s our girls who really ‘sell’ the academy so having a group of leaders who are confident about doing this is important.” HAB Student Leaders work as part of the community to help new students learn all about school life and to feel settled quickly. HAB know how daunting it can be to join a new school so their Student Leaders work hard to make new HAB girls feel welcome. To join the team, each girl in Year 7 had to complete an application form explaining why she wanted to be a student leader and what she would bring to the team. The academy were looking for girls who were ‘proud to be HAB’, who can communicate well with adults and children and have a good knowledge of what the academy offers. HAB had 60 applicants for 12 places in Year 7. Training was given to each of the girls, allowing them to help put people at ease and to encourage conversation.

Oasis Academy Coulsdon

Staff are determined that every child, after a seven-year education at Ark Walworth Academy, should have the skills and qualifications to go to university or to follow a career of their choice. Ofsted says, “The quality of care for students’ health and well-being is second to none.” On the atmosphere in the academy, Ofsted also commented, “Students behave well and all of them get on well together … students mature into confident young adults.” Ark Walworth Academy supports pupils even from before they start their time at the school. Induction days for new Year 7 pupils included a rocket building workshop, sponsored by the Institute of Physics, which helped establish tutor group relationships. Walworth works to enable pupils to follow the university or career path of their choice. In 2015-16 100% of the academy’s sixth form students received a place at the University of their choice with 35% now attending Russell Group universities. In 2016-17 all of their A Level students achieved their 3 or 4 A Levels. As Ofsted further declared, “Subject specialists are delivering sixth form lessons and learning is always good and much is outstanding… Sixth formers are happy to be at the academy, appreciating being in an environment where they are confident they will flourish.” Walworth’s open days are an opportunity for parents and students to see Ark Walworth Academy at work and get a real feel for their vibrant, exciting learning experiences. St Joseph’s College

St Joseph’s College, a De La Salle Catholic Boys school established in 1855, continues to provide an outstanding education for all its students. With an expansive curriculum, many enrichment opportunities and a dedicated staff, pupils have access to one of South London’s favourite and most successful schools. The last few months have been busy as the college has reintroduced the house system and appointed six new Heads of House. The new Year 7 students have already partaken in house activities throughout their two successful induction days. Over 100 students are involved in leadership through the houses and emphasis on peer and mentoring support is the key focus. With major renovation taking place over the summer, from the expanding of the cafeteria, addition of a coffee shop and cafe to the centralising of the college’s Sixth Form, the next few years promise to be exciting for both students and staff at St Joseph’s. Please see the advertisement on this page for details of the college’s Open Evening.

Burntwood School

Helen Dorfman, Principal of Burntwood School, told Primary Times, “Choosing a new school for our children can be a daunting experience. I always suggest that it is important to make a careful analysis of the breadth of curriculum offer, whether the school has a good record with regard to examination success and where progression for the youngsters to Higher Education is the norm.

A substantial Sixth Form is important, as these can offer a wider range of subjects and more flexibility of subject choice for the young person. A good school will also provide a wide range of sporting and extra-curricular activities as well as excellent dance, drama and music teaching. It is important that every child is treated as an individual and that the school works in partnership with the parents to encourage the very best from the young person. At Burntwood, we encourage our young women to be articulate, thoughtful individuals who are able to express their opinions whilst also being able to listen to and consider the views of others. It is my view that girls benefit greatly from a single sex education where they are free to develop and mature without the pressures of the presence of boys. Of course, this is not necessarily the best choice for every young women and we always recommend visiting a variety of styles of schools in order to compare and contrast and be secure that the school selected will best meet the needs of the young person. Whatever your choice of school, at Burntwood we wish you every success in supporting your child through this important transition.”

A Broader Education

Last month, another cohort of Old Palace of John Whitgift students celebrated an outstanding set of A level results with 89% achieving A*- B grades and 52% achieving A*- B. As the girls look forward to their new life at university, they will find that Old Palace has equipped them with far more than just a fine academic education. When a pupil joins Old Palace she develops a strong sense of her place in the world. The world does not revolve around her but rather she is privileged to join the many distinguished women who have passed through its doors since the school was founded in 1889. An Old Palace education means more than excellent academic results. They have established a framework comprising of four guiding principles - Service, Skills and Knowledge, Courage and Emotional Intelligence. These values provide the foundation for each student’s education, whether they are in Nursery, Preparatory, Seniors or Sixth Form. No wonder Old Palace achieved the highest possible rating available in all categories in its recent ISI Inspection. Old Palace know that their unique single sex setting promotes self-confidence, uninhibited enquiry, intellectual rigour and genuine challenge so that girls are best-placed to take advantage of life in the 21st Century. Parents know that there is a requirement for their daughters to take greater responsibility for their own learning both in school and beyond. Old Palace prepare students for today’s world in which they will need to shape their own career. One where the ability to take initiative and shoulder responsibility will be key to their future success as members of society and create a foundation for personal fulfilment. If Old Palace sounds like the school for your daughter, visit them at their Senior School Open Day on Saturday 16 September at 9.30am. For more details and to register go to www.oldpalace. croydon.sch.uk.

Choosing your New School

Alleyn Park, Dulwich, SE21 8SQ Kingsdale was described by Ofsted this year as “a harmonious environment where pupils learn how to be successful in modern Britain. The curriculum is broad and balanced, supporting pupils’ outstanding outcomes because of the chance pupils have to be successful in a range of subjects. Pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding because of the care and attention that staff pay to making pupils’ time in school productive and safe. Pupils’ time in school is enriched by the wide variety of opportunities they are offered in which they can develop and explore skills that match their aspirations.” Kingsdale is an Outstanding School in every area (Ofsted 2017) that provides exceptionally rich opportunities to challenge students of all abilities including providing options in Year 9 to study Triple Science, Latin, Economics and Psychology and the opportunity to study two languages from Year 7. Kingsdale attracts many able students and operates a condensed or accelerated Key Stage 3 programme of study to meet the particular needs and aspirations of all of the students and their families. The school offers a wide variety of academic subjects including 4 or 5 optional courses selected by each child in addition to enrichment activities every day.

In 2016 Kingsdale ranked in the top 25 non-selective schools for attainment at Key Stage 4 and the top 4% for progress at Key Stage 5. The school has one of the best pupil to teacher ratios of any secondary school in London. Average class sizes are approximately 20 across all subjects. In 2016 Kingsdale achieved its best ever A Level results with some extraordinary individual performances including students going on to Oxford and to study Medicine. It had another outstanding set of Year 11 GCSE outcomes with over 40% of all results achieved awarded an A* or A grade with more than 50 students achieving 10 or more A*/A grades. It is therefore no surprise the school has consistently been one of the most popular and oversubscribed in the country for many years. Students have access to iPads, PCs, Apple Macs, laptops, wireless technology and a Virtual Learning Environment. Kingsdale has also introduced one to one mobile technology so that students benefit from having the opportunity to use an iPad safely for educational purposes, as appropriate, in school and at home. Subsidised excursions to amazing destinations such as Malaysia, Namibia, Brazil, the USA and the French Alps are also organised every year. Bullying can have a lasting effect, leaving the young person with feelings of loneliness, fear, anger and anxiety and may lead to depression and self-harm. Some children are reluctant to tell their parents for fear of the bullying escalating or not being believed.Young people sometimes believe they deserve to be bullied, so when a child does tell their parent, it may have taken great courage so it is important they are listened to and not judged. It can be emotionally challenging when parents learn that their child is being bullied and feelings of anger may overwhelm them as they realise they have been unable to protect their child. Going back to school, a new pencil case and As some young people are disinclined to tell seeing old classmates is a thrill for many children, for others who have suffered bullying their parents about being bullied, it is helpful to recognise the signs: a change in mood or at school, September can be a daunting behavior, school refusal, an unexplained decline time. 70% of all young people (source: in school grades, unexplained injuries, coming YoungMinds at youngminds.org.uk) have experienced bullying, which can take place at home with missing possessions or money, upset after using the internet or mobile, school, travelling to and from school, online difficulty sleeping, change in eating habits, and at home where it can be perpetrated social withdrawal or self-harm. by siblings. Fortunately, for most children bullying is transitory with short term impact, Once children have opened up to being bullied, parents need to reassure them but for a few the impact can be devastating, demoralising and cause psychological damage. that they were right to confide, that they are believed and that the parent will work Bullying can be carefully disguised leaving young people unsure whether they are being with the school to stop the bullying and to keep them safe. knowing that action will be taken to stop the perpetrator, they are able to move on despite feelings of upset and anger. Others can be so adversely affected that they need counselling to help them work through their feelings. They may refuse to attend school and their school work and friendships suffer. If left unsupported, the impact of childhood bullying can lead to mental health problems such as depression, low self-esteem and anger in adulthood. Fegans is a charity based in Tunbridge Wells, Lambeth and Surrey, which offers counselling to support children and young people suffering emotional distress and challenging behaviours, including bullying. Compassionate and qualified counsellors work with children and young people to re-build their confidence and self-esteem; promote healthy relationships and help them to heal emotionally. Fegans will also work with the child or young person who is the bully. It can be a shock to parents who find out their child is a bully and may feel challenged by their behaviour. Counselling could help the child to understand their own behaviour and the root of their unhappiness. For more information, visit www.fegans.org.uk

Mary’s Meals

Mary’s Meals are asking you to bring hope to a hungry child with this World Porridge Day. Children all over the world are preparing for the new term, including more than 1.2 million learners who receive a daily meal from Mary’s Meals. The charity works with some of the world’s poorest communities to set up school feeding programmes that encourage children to attend class, learn, and work towards a better future. World Porridge Day, 10 October, celebrates the huge difference that a daily mug of porridge from Mary’s Meals makes in the lives of chronically hungry children. This October, schools across the UK will be joining in with the Porridge Smiles fundraising campaign to send a real message of hope to children living in poverty. Mary’s Meals is inviting you to host a porridge party fundraiser at school, any time in October. It’s a great way to bring staff, pupils and parents together and everyone will have fun creating a smiley face in their bowl of porridge using tasty toppings. To request your free Porridge Smiles fundraising pack – which includes tips for setting up your party and a poster to publicise your event – visit www.worldporridgeday.com and complete the online form. You’ll also be able to see some of the best Porridge Smiles from last year in our 2016 Hall of Fame. It costs just 7p to provide one meal, so your school’s fundraising will make a huge difference to children receiving Mary’s Meals. The charity is committed to spending at least 93p of every £1 donated directly on charitable activities.

Win a Jungle Bunch Goodie Bag Based on the award winning French-American-British TV series, the Jungle Bunch are back in their new film ‘The Jungle Bunch Returns’. Maurice may look like an emperor penguin but he’s a real tiger inside. He journeyed from Antarctica to the equator because he believed he belonged there. Raised by a tigress, he’s the clumsiest Kung-Fu master ever. Maurice has a group of friends - Junior the fish, Miguel the gorilla, Gilbert the grumpy tarsier, Batricia the bat, Fred the warthog and Al and Bob, both toads, who together make The Jungle Bunch. Maurice and his friends intend to maintain order and justice in the jungle as Maurice’s mother did before him. But Igor, an evil koala, wants to destroy the jungle once and for all with the help of his army of silly baboons. The Jungle Bunch is released in UK cinemas on 15 September.

For your chance to win one of five Jungle Bunch goodie bags, tell us where Maurice the emperor penguin originally came from. See below for details on how to enter.

Kerry On Dancing

Why should you choose ballroom and Latin American dance as a hobby? Dance is well documented to be a great form of exercise. It develops coordination, flexibility, focus, fitness, musicality, strength, stamina and self-confidence. Ballroom also offers that little bit more

than other dance genres. It involves working closely with another person, promoting team work, communication and negotiation skills, often leading to strong friendships being built. In addition there are 10 different rhythms and dances to be mastered! Kerry On Dancing offers fun, exciting, structured classes. Children do not need to have a partner to attend. The basics of the Ballroom and Latin dances are introduced. Once understood pupils can progress to taking Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) dance examinations and can be entered into ISTD Medalist competitions if they wish. For more information go to www. kerryondancing.co.uk or email kerry@kerryondancing.co.uk.

As the evenings become shorter the children are given head torches when it starts to get dark. This leads to a whole new and fun experience, celebrating the seasons and engaging the senses. Forest Schools are long term programmes led by qualified practitioner James Hazlerigg–Kinlay. He has a refreshing approach to education, concentrating on a philosophy of respect and admiration for nature inspired by the Scandinavian concept of outdoor education

Discover the Hidden World of Invertebrates

London schools are being invited to join Mission: Invertebrate to discover the hidden wonders of the invertebrate world. Mapped to the National Curriculum, The Royal Parks has developed a schedule of inspirational free sessions for children from Key Stage 1 upwards. Taking place across all eight Royal Parks, the sessions are led by a team of experienced Environmental Educators and have been devised with The Royal Parks’ education partners. With a focus on what an invertebrate is and

their form and function, the interactive sessions are tailored to each age group and will take place in the autumn term. The sessions will centre around three topics. The first topic is pollination in which pupils will find out about the role of pollinators in the ecosystem. Then students will learn about the role of detritivores in the process of decay by getting their hands dirty and looking closely at the invertebrate species in the park. Finally, students will explore the parks and participate in activities that will reveal the crucial roles invertebrates play within the food chain. In the autumn term there will be a competition to accompany the Mission: Invertebrate sessions. The competition invites schools to design their dream invertebrate habitat in their school grounds and the winning school will have aspects of their design created. If you would like to make a booking or to sign up to the competition, visit www.royalparks.org.uk/getinvolved/mission-invertebrate.

Arcadia, Dover, Kent

Tangled Picture Frame To celebrate the release of their brand new series, Disney’s Tangled have been getting creative and have made a brand new step-by-step guide to making your very own Tangled picture frame.

You will need: • • • • • • •

1.

4. Tape everything together using masking tape. Only tape three

Cardboard Tape Scissors A ruler Different colours of paint Yellow string A Tangled picture Select your favourite picture, maybe of Rapunzel, to be framed. Draw around your picture on the bottom right section of the cardboard, making sure to leave an extra 1cm border around the picture.

2. Draw the outline of a castle on

the left edge of card around your picture. This will be the shape of your frame. 3. Draw around your picture again on a separate piece of card, again making sure to leave a 1cm edge around the picture. Draw a trapezium slightly smaller than this to form the stand for your frame. Cut out the shapes as well as the inside from your frame on the other piece of card.

Hello Pet Patters! I’ve been sent some interesting questions - so here goes!! And the first one asks, is it OK to have a dog and a cat in the same household? Fair enough, and certainly you would normally think that dogs chase cats - so no! But in fact, the chasing is triggered more by the dog’s natural instincts to chase its food - like rabbits or rats etc. And cats being more solitary (ask teacher!) creatures, will try to run away from any other larger animal they see, thus encouraging a dog to chase them! But, dogs learn things - they listen to, and then obey their “bosses” - you! Ideally you would have a puppy and a kitten, babies, and they will both then look to you as their guide and ‘boss’. Praising the puppy (or young dog) when it learns to sit, and let you present the kitten in your arms for it to sniff, and then giving a reward (small treat) will teach it very quickly that sniffing is OK. But ... any leaping forward, barking or trying to chase must be given a sharp “NO!”, and no treat to eat. Likewise with the kitten, staying calm (stroke it a lot) when the puppy or dog is sniffing, with no hissing or clawing also deserves an immediate treat. After practising this routine several times a day, for a few weeks, it should then be possible for the two to meet without you holding them, but still giving rewards if they behave nicely. And subsequent ‘growing up’ together once their identities have been recognised by each other will ensure a lifelong acceptance, and quite likely a genuine friendship. Neither dogs nor cats know what they are - they are just pre-programmed to behave in certain doggy or pussy ways - BUT these can be modified by teaching, and then their own experiences. So ... Happy training!!

sides of the back just in case you want to slot a new picture into your frame at any point. Attach the trapezium on the back and tape it on both sides. Make sure the bottom of the trapezium lines up with the bottom of the frame. 5. Time to get painting! Paint the cardboard one colour (we suggest a light blue). Fold a piece of paper to use as a stamp to create brick effects. After your first layer of paint has dried, dip the paper into a different colour (we suggest white) and get stamping! 6. Using three strands of the yellow string, plait it to create your own Rapunzel braid, tying it off at the end. Once finished, glue it onto your frame using either PVA, a glue stick or a glue gun, running from the top of the tower to the bottom. Make sure you have an adult to help if you are using a glue gun. Voila! Remember you can mix and match your colours and pictures to make lots of different picture frames. Set between the stories told in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ acclaimed film Tangled and its short film Tangled Ever After, join Rapunzel in her brand new show Tangled: The Series, as it runs on the Disney Channel. Primary Times Pets Ok - now here’s a thing! Which bird lays the largest egg?? Well, it’s likely to be the largest bird yes? But you might not think of it as a bird when I tell you it’s the ostrich!! You think of birds as flying creatures, but the ostrich is just too heavy to fly, so it’s ‘wings’ have become decorative, and are used more for display when it is looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend. The feathers are also rather ‘fluffy’, with gaps in between, so they wouldn’t be much use as ‘wings’ - but they can make an attractive flutter! However, their eggs are certainly the largest - and are equivalent (teacher!) to about 180 chicken eggs! That would certainly make a HUGE breakfast, eh?!! But I don’t know where you would find a saucepan big enough if you like your eggs boiled!! Yum YUM!

Moving swiftly on ... Can you feed rabbits and guinea pigs the same food? Well, there’s a puzzle worth answering! And immediately I can say NO - don’t! This is because guinea pigs need extra Vitamin C in their diet, whilst rabbits don’t. Rabbits can live on grass and hay, and don’t really need other vegetables. So, it’s OK to give rabbits some guinea pig food, as well as just their hay food, but never the other way around. Guinea pigs must always have their special diet (which includes extra Vitamin C), and not just the simple diet of hay you give rabbits. Guinea pigs need the Vitamin C content of fresh vegetables, dandelion leaves etc, as well as some grass to chew and keep their teeth short. But giving them just rabbit food will quickly make them ill, and then you must take them to your vet! Oh dear!!

Thank you to Clinton Jefferies, the Primary Times Vet, for answering our readers’ questions 46
