The Best Family Guide to What’s On FREE Bikeability Cycling Courses Summer Holidays 2017

School’s Out for Summer - yes that time

has finally arrived - the beginning of the long summer holidays. No more crazy mornings with the stress of getting up, dressed and off to school without being late (in my house certainly...), just long sunny, relaxing days hopefully!

“Cycling lets me go on adventures.”

Quotes from pupils at Regina Coeli RC Primary School, Croydon “Bikeability has made me feel safe on the road with my bike.” “Bikeability has made me more aware of the road and my surroundings.”

“Bikeability has given me confidence.”

“Cycling is great fun and a sporty activity.”

“Bikeability has helped me overcome my fear of riding on the road.”

Cycling is exercise without realising it.

Hayley and Miriam have spent the last few weeks finding all the hundreds of listings that we have published. We’re sorry if we couldn’t publish everything we are sent but the summer magazine is our biggest of the year and with so much going on we simply run out of space. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 4 September.

Have a fantastic summer

Vauxhall Primary School Spring Residential Once a year, year 5 pupils at Vauxhall Primary School get to spend a week experiencing life outside the city, taking a trip to the Wick Court Farm in Gloucestershire. During the week, staff and farmers provide at least four hours of tuition and activities that involve the children and their teachers actively participating in the day-to-day running of the farms. The children are encouraged to take full responsibility for the work they do, caring for the animals and the land. This year’s trip coincided with a visit from the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. The Duchess donned her trusty boots as she spent an afternoon mucking in on the farm joining the Year 5

and longer, planned and unexpected absences. These educators are heroes; however, overwhelmingly they are forced to work through education recruitment agencies. Schools spend over £1.3bn per year on supply cover; shockingly, £300m of this is funnelled out of education directly into the recruiters. Three-hundred-million-pounds per year! That’s money that could be spent educating children. As a former teacher, I believe that schools, teachers and pupils deserve better. That’s why I decided to join Zen Educate. Zen Educate removes that expensive middle-person. Using technology, we have created a way that connects schools directly with supply cover, lowering the cost while increasing efficiency. Through Zen Educate, the typical school can save £15-20K per year. If you’re a parent, teacher or leader at a school that is struggling to cope with budget cuts, take a look at www.zeneducate.com. Cut out that unnecessary middle-person instead of vital staff and activities for children!”

After the success of Snow White in 2016, Sixteenfeet Productions are accepting bookings for this Christmas for their fab and funky reimagining of ‘Aladdin’ by Andrew S Walsh. Andy has previously adapted ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘The Wind in the Willows’ for Sixteenfeet’s summer shows. This contemporary pantomime, created specifically for primary schools, offers a fantastic opportunity for children to experience live performance in the comfort of their own school at a fraction of the cost of a theatre visit. Reactions to last year’s pantomime were very enthusiastic. One teacher said, “It was super, lovely, smashing, great,” and a 6-yearold pupil from Snaresbrook Primary School said, “This was the best day of my life!”

Innovation to Cope with Budget Cuts Primary Times spoke to Sam Bennett, exmaths teacher and Head of Schools at Zen Educate. He told us, “Whether you’re a parent, school leader or teacher you are probably aware of the unprecedented pressure school budgets are under. Schools are facing bleak choices such as cutting staff, stopping extracurricular activities or even reducing their workingweek. However, there are other ways for schools that are willing to innovate. One such option is to rethink how the temporary workforce is managed. Schools rely on supply teachers and teaching assistants to cover a variety of short-term

pupils and their teachers as they learned first-hand about the running of a farm. The Duchess complimented the Year 5s for their “great behaviour,” saying working with them “was fun and enjoyable.” For another treat, Michael Morpurgo, famous children’s author who also owns the farm, gave the children a special reading of one of his books, ‘Conker’. It was a privilege hearing one of Britain’s most celebrated authors read his own work, and was a great way to inspire all the budding writers of the group.

Following its world premiere at The Old Vic in 2015, the show went on to receive an Olivier Award nomination for Best Entertainment & Family Show and was hailed by The Guardian as “the best family show since Matilda.” Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax™ is a brilliant riot of eye-popping colour, gorgeous puppetry and infectious music to enchant adults and children alike. The show is running from 15 October to 5 November. Visit the website for more information at www.oldvictheatre.com

Family theatre guide Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax Suitable for ages 6 and above, this is the tale of one little Lorax and his friends as they set out on a mission to protect the earth and save the beloved Truffula Trees. But fuelled by dreams of big buzzing factories, bumper-to-bumper motorways and fridges so big you could eat your dinner in them, how will they stop the mighty Once-ler and his tree-chopping ways? Perfect for exploring environmental and social issues, this story of friendship, greed and saving the planet is brought to life with rhyming verse, inventive puppetry, spellbinding sets and exhilarating music – all combining to make this a truly spectacular show.

‘The Borrowers’ at Polka Theatre The timeless classic, The Borrowers, bursts onto Polka’s Main Stage this summer with dazzling puppetry, original music, stunning design and plenty of suspense. Arrietty has lived her whole life deep beneath the floorboards, dreaming of the great outdoors. When her father Pod finally brings her upstairs to learn the tricks of borrowing, Arrietty meets a human boy. But their friendship risks everything and the ‘human beans’ soon discover the borrowers’ secret world - it’s time to escape. Join Polka Theatre for a fantastical adventure as the heroic Arrietty and her family embark on an action-packed journey to find somewhere new to call home.

Circus Trick Tease, the winners of the coveted Children’s Choice Award and five star sell out Edinburgh Fringe sensation, are bringing their exciting kid’s comedy, ‘Children are Stinky’ to London. High calibre circus, a rocking soundtrack and genuine belly laughs propelled the Australian acrobatic duo into a smash hit, multi award winning whirlwind year. With packed out shows across China and Australia, it’s best to book in advance. The duo’s attempts to prove that kids are stinky are met with messy, ridiculous, hysterical twists. They only succeed in proving that children are awesome and they know it. The show is playing the Underbelly Festival on London’s Southbank at 3pm from 22 – 27 July. The show is suitable for ages 3+ and of course babies are always welcome. It has been given the top pick of Best Kids’ Shows by The Daily Record and Fringe Biscuit told Primary Times, “Stunning acrobatics and explosive charisma leave both parents and children awestruck.”

Following a critically acclaimed, sold-out run last Christmas Southwark Playhouse’s adaptation of Kiki’s Delivery Service returns for a limited 4 week run this summer – it promises to be a magical tale of growing up and finding acceptance for everyone aged 7 and older. Kiki is a 13 year old witch and, as tradition dictates, it is time for her to leave home and family to make a new life for herself. Equipped with her ability to fly and accompanied by Jiji, her faithful feline companion, she sets out to find a place where she can use her powers for the greater good and that one day she might call home. Kiki’s Delivery Service is adapted from the bestselling and award winning book by Japanese author Eiko Kadono. The book has previously been adapted in to a live action film and most notably an award winning animation by Studio Ghibli. Critics were effusive in their praise. “I loved every minute of it” said WhatsOnStage.com (). “Kiki’s adventure definitely delivers” said Time Out () and The Times () gave a satisfied, feline “miaow!”. Don’t miss it!

The school’s most recent Ofsted report noted that ‘the range of subjects taught is imaginative, well-constructed and contributes well to students’ achievement and their outstanding spiritual, cultural and moral development.’ In 2016 Kingsdale ranked in the top 25 non-selective schools for attainment at Key Stage 4 and the top 4% for progress at Key Stage 5. The school has one of the best pupil to teacher ratios of any secondary school in London. Average class sizes are approximately 20 across all subjects. In 2016 Kingsdale achieved its best ever A Level results with some extraordinary individual performances including students going on to Oxford and to study Medicine. It had another outstanding set of Year 11 GCSE outcomes with over 40% of all results achieved awarded an A* or A grade with more than 50 students achieving 10 or more A*/A grades! Old Palace School

Old Palace is a unique school in an exceptional setting steeped in history. They identify, encourage and nurture the special qualities of each and every one of their students whilst the surroundings stimulate girls to develop and flourish in ways beyond the reach of a conventional education. For example, not every girls’ school can boast the opportunity to sing cathedral repertoire every week as Old Palace do in Croydon Minster, the school’s next door neighbour. Whilst every student enjoys a first class academic education at Old Palace, they also promote a broader values-based education embracing four dimensions: service, skills and knowledge, courage and emotional intelligence. With this approach, students quickly learn who they are and what they stand for. Old Palace Senior School starts at Year 6 and whilst a number of girls join at this stage, a large number also join in Year 7. The school attracts students from a wide range of schools, both state and independent, and they actively celebrate their diverse cultural mix. As

As a Catholic College, applicants with children of other faiths are welcome, however all applicants applying are expected to respect the ethos and its importance to the college community, especially by participating in activities central to this ethos. College life will change in September as the St Joseph’s College House System is re-introduced. Houses are all named after previous school houses from the college’s 160 year history. Alongside Heads of Year, the college has employed Heads of House and expanded its student leadership body to well over 100 student leaders from Year 7 up to Year 13. Competitive activities start with their super six: Sports Day, music and entertainment, drama, fund raising, art &design and a swimming gala. Parents are invited to attend each of these events as they are highly entertaining and a chance to see their sons partake in a range of activities. St Joseph’s College is looking forward to having vertical student support from older students in Key Stage 4 and 5 for the younger students in their houses and cannot wait to publish all the exciting activities in the Primary Times. St Thomas the Apostle College

Primary Times spoke to Eamon Connolly, Headteacher of St Thomas the Apostle College. He told us, “St Thomas the Apostle College is a boys’ Catholic school with a mixed 6th Form, our intake reflects the multi-faith community in which we live. We are the highest performing school in Southwark and 11th in the entire country for progress. Our achievements are recognised on a national level, including being shortlisted for the TES Secondary School of the Year Award in 2015 and again in 2017, with an Ofsted rating of ‘Outstanding’ in all categories. Despite our impressive recent achievements, we are not resting on our laurels. We are passionately committed to continually driving the school forward so that we can best meet the varied, individual needs of our students. Our ethos is developed through our emphasis on traditional values, we insist on the highest standards of behaviour, uniform, attitude to learning and respect for one another and the environment. By providing an academic yet broad and balanced curriculum for all our students, we are able to recognise and develop individual talents and interests. Our boys leave here well balanced young men, fully equipped to deal with the challenges of life, achieving the highest academic qualifications, underpinned by strong moral and spiritual values. The boys take real pride in their school community and their learning. One student told the Ofsted Inspectors: “we enter as boys but we leave as young men.” Building on our growing reputation for excellence, we are expecting our first set of A-Level results in the summer of 2017. Our students have benefitted from close links with the best universities in the country and we have a high proportion of our students accepted

into Russell Group universities, with one student receiving a full scholarship to attend the University of Chicago. We know how challenging it can be trying to choose the right school for your son but, if you do choose to send your son to St Thomas the Apostle College, we hope that this will be the start of a long, happy association between your family and our school community an association that will culminate in success at GCSE, as well as opportunities to progress on to A-levels and the world of work.”

St Saviour’s and St Olave’s

St Saviour’s and St Olave’s is a popular CE girls’ school close to some of London’s most historic and famous landmarks and amenities. The school itself has fascinating roots going back to 1562, under the Charter of Elizabeth I. The ethos of the school is built on Christian principles of care and support and challenge with academic rigour. Students have said that they feel safe and appreciate having a ‘voice’ in the school. Headteacher Catherine May told Primary Times, ‘The school is an oasis for staff and students in the middle of inner London. We are an inclusive multi-cultural school which admits students of other faiths and of no faith as well as Christians. Every member of the community is valued with high expectations of all and from all.’ St Saviour’s & St Olave’s takes full advantage of a host of world class educational and cultural opportunities. The school is recognised as providing outstanding enrichment, involving a wide range of activities and including every member of staff and all students. Music flourishes. There are opportunities for participation in Japanese, Mandarin, drama, many different sports and homework clubs in every subject area to name but a few. These activities, together with the excellent, comprehensive curriculum ensure that students receive a fantastic education from

AniMalcolm is a laugh-out-loud adventure for every child who ever wondered what it might be like to be a bit of an animal. Malcolm doesn’t like animals, which is a problem because his family love them. Their house is full of pets. What the house is not full of is stuff Malcolm likes, such as the laptop he wanted for his birthday. The only bright spot on the horizon is the Year 6 school trip but the catch is, it’s a trip to a farm. Over the next days, Malcolm changes. With the help of a magic goat, Malcolm is transformed into a whole series of animals. He thinks differently, speaks differently and eats differently. But will he end up the same as he was before? Sometimes the hardest thing to become is yourself. We have ten signed copies of this hilarious new book for lucky Primary Times readers to win. For your chance to be a winner, tell us what magical animal helps Malcolm transform. For entry details see below.

Scholars receive free individual or small group tuition provided by expert professionals, to the value of £1,000 per annum. There is equality of access for admission places irrespective of distance from the school or home locality. Please be advised that Kingsdale Foundation School offers private tours of the school during normal working hours throughout the academic year, to enable prospective parents and students to see the school in action. Tours are arranged at a time that suits you.
