Well what a mixed school year that has been... lessons in school, home schooling, online lessons then back to school. Following an extended closure in March 2020, HMS Belfast is reopening to the public this summer on 8 July. Climb on board and discover brand new interactive displays and historical exhibitions. Explore all nine decks of this iconic warship including the top of the flag deck and deep under the Thames waterline in the lower decks. Learn about HMS Belfast’s history from her launch on St Patrick’s Day 1938 and her active Royal Navy service, to her life as a London landmark for the past 50 years. HMS Belfast is part of Imperial War Museums and is moored on the River Thames, just a short walk from London Bridge station. Kids go half price and IWM members get free admission. Awards for New Teachers

The Lambeth Schools Partnership have held their first awards for promising new teachers. They were thrilled with the quality of the nominations submitted and have announced that the winners are Kimberley Stewart, Tarik Falali and Anna Stringer. It was great to see how proud the head teachers are of their staff. The Promising New Teacher Award has been established to recognise and develop the potential of local teachers who have shown excellence in their work with pupils. The three winning teachers’ schools will be awarded £2000 each, to be spent on a project focused on the underachievement of a particular group of pupils in Lambeth. This will enable the winners to develop and roll out an innovative and impactful project. Tarik Filali is a secondary school teacher at Trinity Academy. Tarik’s inspirational teaching through lockdown has inspired his pupils with a love of the subject and the written word. Anna Stringer from Glenbrook Primary School has created an ethos of reading and writing for pleasure in her classroom with children making rapid progress from all starting points. Kimberley Stewart has proved an asset to the St Mark’s C of E Primary School team through her enthusiasm, positivity and passion for teaching and learning. We do have to declare a bit of an interest here. Anna Stringer worked for Primary Times for a little while and then wrote editorial for us while she was travelling the world before becoming a teacher. Well done to all of them but we feel particularly proud of Anna.

Just like adults, children react to death in different ways at different times. They may seem to be sad, very naughty or not to care at all. They may have behaviour or concentration problems at school or home, difficulties with eating or sleeping and feel very anxious or guilty. St Christopher’s Hospice understands how difficult it can be to find a way to explain what has happened, to cope with their questions and to manage their behaviour. St Christopher’s Hospice is there to support them, and you, through their Candle Child Bereavement Service. They offer one-to-one and group counselling for any child or young person in Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham or Southwark experiencing loss through death. They also offer specialist training, advice and consultancy services to schools and other organisations working with children facing bereavement and an advice service for parents and professional carers. To ensure that they can continue to offer support whilst keeping you safe during the pandemic, they have reshaped their service. St Christopher’s aren’t currently able to offer face-to-face appointments, but they’re still here for you, with sessions now done over the phone. Spark4Kids Summer Computer Workshops

Computational thinking – the instinctive ability to work out exactly how to tell a computer what to do – is as important as numeracy and literacy in today’s digital world. By learning to code, children gain this key skill. An often overlooked aspect of coding is how much of a creative outlet it can be for children. Coding allows children to express their ideas computationally and gets them thinking of themselves as creators and not just consumers of technology If your child loves technology, then attending a Spark4Kids workshop and learning to code or touch-type could be their ultimate holiday activity! Hidden Heroes of London’s Royal Parks

Discover the fascinating world of London’s bugs this summer as the Royal Parks’ Mission: Invertebrate goes on tour. Join a bug hunt, jump onboard the Bugmobile, learn fascinating facts during interactive storytelling and make critter crafts to take home. Budding environmentalists will meet the Parks’ hidden heroes and learn about their vital roles as recyclers, pollinators and sources of food. Do you know what a Neovenator is? Of course, you know it’s a dinosaur and you can tell that it’s a ‘New Hunter’.You probably knew that it was first discovered on the Isle of Wight.You may be surprised to hear that it weighed between 1 and 2 tonnes. But you will be delighted to hear that as the UK emerges out of lockdown, the Epping Ongar Railway aims to inspire you and the children with a walking Neovenator, some baby dinosaurs and a small Jurassic area plus a return steam train ride to Ongar and part of the Epping Forest on 18 July and 22 August. The Family Mile offers that starting point to a healthier and happier life, whether it’s walking the dog, pushing the pram, scooting with the kids or simply walking together as family. This August, they are hosting their very own free family event at Burgess Park, bringing families together from all over Southwark to do ‘Their Mile, Their Way’. Expect exciting activities, fantastic giveaways, upbeat music, and open green spaces where the kids (and parents) can put down their phones and have some outdoorsy fun – all completely free. The day will be jam packed with Family Mile activities suitable for families of all ages, where parents and children alike can channel their inner adventurer! With five star Nature Miles, interactive scavenger hunts, fun workouts and games, this is a guaranteed spectacular day out for the whole family. They have also decided to create their very own Mason Mile Mascot and are looking for a talented youngster to design it. There will be mascot design packs available on the day, where kids can enter this unique competition for a chance to work with a professional designer and bring their creation to life.

Nervous about attending in-person events post-pandemic? St Christopher’s have got you covered. This year, they’ve introduced contact-free registration, wave start times and hand sanitiser points. They’ll also be asking walkers to stay a 2m distance from anyone who is not in their household or bubble, wear a face covering when at the start and finish and not to walk if they’ve come into contact with anyone with symptoms or experienced symptoms of COVID-19 themselves in the 14 days before the event. Battersea Park Children’s Zoo

Nestled on the south bank of the Thames, Battersea Park Children’s Zoo is the perfect place for little explorers. The Festival’s pop-up characters will perform in front of a storytelling backdrop set within a courtyard garden designed and made by artist Emily Wye. Festival of Fairytales at the Garden Museum The Festival of Fairytales will transform the Garden Museum into a world of magic and mystery on Sunday 15 August. For one day only, the Garden Museum in Lambeth Palace Road by Lambeth Bridge will be transformed into a wonderland of circus, storytelling and magic. The Festival of Fairytales is a new festival for children aged 4 – 10, set against the backdrop of the Garden Museum’s medieval church building. Be guided by the genie through a world of gnomes and butterflies, golden fish and magic, and make a wish on a tree. The optional dress code is Woodland Creatures! From Stormzy to Kirsty MacColl and Francis Rossi, Croydon has had more than their fair share of rock and pop stars over the years, and the Rock Project Croydon could just find the next big talent! The Rock Project Croydon teach 7-18 year olds how to play guitar, bass, drums and sing in a band, catering for complete beginners through to more advanced. Separate sessions are run for juniors, 7-11 years old and seniors 12-18 years old, with all instruments supplied. With venues in Addiscombe, Purley and Caterham, the school is led by Clara and Graeme Priestly. The Rock Project has a team of professional, gigging musicians who teach students their chosen instrument in one-hour long group sessions. St Mary’s Bounces Back Stronger from Lockdown

Like all other schools, St Mary’s Catholic High School faced many challenges during the enforced COVID lockdowns. However, the restrictions did not go unchallenged by this thriving co-educational school in the heart of Croydon, South London.While never fully closed due to the number of children of ‘Key Workers’, the Headteacher, Patrick Shields, and his staff were determined that those who were not physically present would get a first-rate education, regardless of the restrictions. “Out of sight, definitely didn’t mean out of mind” explained Mr Shields, “Our school prides itself on developing student’s resilience, but the circumstances we all faced meant that some students needed extra support for their school work and mental wellbeing.” Throughout the lockdowns students were telephoned every few days, ensuring they were able to access school work and were coping with the restrictions.This was much appreciated by many parents. St Mary’s staff drove the school minibus across the Croydon area delivering food parcels, school supplies and equipment to its students in need. In addition to the government supplied laptops, the school was also able to source funding for additional computers from the Catholic Children’s Society, ensuring that all students were able to access school work throughout the lockdown. Since the students have returned to school, attendance figures are the highest achieved by the school for many years, with all year groups exceeding the school’s 96% target.“This shows that our students really appreciate being in school in person, socialising with their friends and learning with their teachers. Student feedback recognises the lengths that our staff went to in supporting them during the national crisis” said Mr Shields. St Mary’s students now wear their school face coverings as a badge of pride that the school has indeed, bounced back stronger.

Bermondsey Student Competes at Tokyo Olympics

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, a Year 11 student at Harris Academy Bermondsey, has been selected for the GB diving team at the Tokyo Olympics. Andrea, 16, who finished her GCSEs this year, will compete in the 10m platform event, having already gained her first senior individual European medal this year and been named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. “Reaching the Tokyo Olympics is a massive accomplishment for Andrea,” says the Vice Principal at Harris Academy Bermondsey, Lyndsay Harris. “It’s such a testament to her continued commitment, resilience and positive attitude towards her goals in diving, whilst maintaining her excellent academic record.” Andrea is very grateful for the support her school has given her. “My school, the staff and students have continued to be by my side and have helped me to be the best student I could be,” she told Primary Times. “For people getting into any sport, I’d tell them to have fun, really enjoy what they are doing - and to have a dream. I’m getting so far in my sport, and I am enjoying it so much because my dream was the Olympic Games.” Andrea was talent-spotted several years ago by Crystal Palace Diving Club. “I was a gymnast and so quite flexible and strong, and I started doing well at diving so I stopped my gymnastics and swimming and just focused on diving, and my love for it just grew,” says Andrea. Now Andrea’s dream of competing in the Olympics has come true and all the students and staff at her school will be cheering her on!

Prendergast Vale School is a school for girls and boys aged 3 to 16 that aims to put children on the pathway to university to lead to successful careers in the modern world.
