The Laugh Out Loud Book Awards 2020 The Laugh Out Loud Book Awards (the Lollies) celebrate the best and funniest children’s books in the UK and Ireland, voted for by children.Voting is now open for the Lollies 2020 – it’s time to get reading and voting for your favourites! Michael Rosen, children’s novelist, poet and former Children’s Laureate, chaired the judging panel which selected the shortlist from nearly 120 titles submitted by children’s publishers. Having long championed humorous books for children, Michael told Primary Times, “Anyone around children looking for books to have them giggling and laughing over and over again, these 12 books will do the job. Funny books are so important because they draw you through, and you have a wonderful time and feel good. What could be better than that?” The Lollies are awarded in three categories: Best Laugh Out Loud Picture Book, Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 6-8 year olds and Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 9-13 year olds. The winning book in each category will be decided solely by children’s votes, with schools and parents encouraged to help kids get involved and voting via the Lollies website,

Winner Announced for Capturing Croydon Competition

StarApple Child Care - Nurturing Abilities The Early Years Foundation Stage forms the framework of StarApple’s establishment. However in some instances children greatly exceed what is expected of them in terms of the framework. There are those who are naturally gifted in arts, music, numbers and literacy for example, and at StarApple they ensure that these talents are not missed or ignored. Alongside the EYFS, they run their bespoke, individually tailored programme called the Accelerated Program. There the children’s talents are nurtured in a more structured way. This programme exceeds what is expected of children within the EYFS and prepares them not only academically but ensures that they become polite rounded children. Children’s journeys are gradual, at their pace, to fulfil the natural gift that they possess. Ja’don started StarApple as a three year old and his natural gift for numbers was quickly observed. Before the age of 4 his mathematical skills far exceeded that of a six year old. He had a natural knack to manipulate numbers and so StarApple saw the need to place him on the Accelerated Program. He continues to excel, especially in the area of Arts and Mathematics. For more information about StarApple, please visit www. starappledaycare.com.

Elmer Arrives at the Elephant Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, David McKee’s beloved children’s character, has arrived at Elephant Park, London. A special trail of community-design sculptures that celebrate diversity and inclusivity have been installed to mark his 30th birthday. Primary schools, pensioners, youth groups and local residents were all involved in the design of the sculptures, which can be found around Elephant Park and the surrounding area, including Trafalgar Place, South Gardens, Walworth Square and London’s newest independent retail destination, Sayer Street. Children and adults of all ages can follow the trail free of charge, with each of the Elmer sculptures including a special anagram for trail walkers to solve. Once visitors have solved every anagram, they can input their answers to the Elephant Park website for a chance to win a special Elmer prize pack. The trail will be in place until late October, after which the Elmer sculptures will be auctioned, with all proceeds from the sales being used to support local community causes. Libraries across Southwark will also be joining in with the Elmer fun, with dedicated areas and displays of all things Elmer during the trail period. Special Elmer-themed storytelling events as well as parent and baby sessions are set to take place at the libraries during the week beginning 16 September. For more information about the trail, please visit www.elephantpark.co.uk. 4

Sarah Jones, MP for Central Croydon has awarded six budding photographers top prizes for their images of Croydon, as part of The Whitgift Foundation’s Capturing Croydon Competition. The Whitgift Foundation ran one-day bespoke workshops throughout March where pupils from six local primary schools were given the opportunity to discover Croydon through a photographic lens. Through exploring historic landmarks alongside the exciting new developments happening in Croydon, local schoolchildren engaged with their surrounding in a new and inspiring way. Estelle, aged 11, from Atwood Primary took the winning photo at the very first Capturing Croydon workshop, in the Queen’s Gardens in the centre of Croydon. She was selected from 146 schoolchildren as the winner. Over 400 images were submitted which captured the children’s responses to their surroundings and the changes happening to Croydon’s urban landscape. Following multiple rounds of competitive judging, All Saints Primary was awarded the prize for overall winning school by presenting the strongest collection of images from the workshops. Martin Corney, Chief Executive of the Whitgift Foundation, told Primary Times, “We launched this competition to engage local school children with their surroundings in Croydon and I am extremely impressed by the collection of photography that has come out of this initiative. It is great to see how the workshops have developed the children’s understanding of both Croydon’s history and its future developments.”

Learn to Swim at Everyone Active

Learning to swim is a vital life skill which every child should experience. Swimming lessons teach children independence and give a sense of accomplishment as the child feels themselves improving. Swimming offers a whole-body workout like no other, helping children to keep active whilst having fun. Learning to swim also gives children the ability to get themselves out of potentially dangerous situations, enabling them to fully enjoy trips to the seaside and beach holidays. Once your children are able to swim confidently and competently, the door opens up to a huge range of other activities, like kayaking, canoeing and water polo. These provide further opportunities for keeping active, meeting friends and developing new skills. Everyone Active’s award-winning learn to swim programme offers lessons for all ages of swimmers, with child classes starting at 4 months right through to adult classes and are available at over 120 sites. All swimming teachers are Swim England level 2 (or equivalent) qualified. All stages are progressive and continually assessed, initially developing water confidence and then teaching children to swim. As they improve, the distance is increased and all strokes are introduced. Children also have the opportunity to develop water safety skills and other aquatic disciplines such as rookie lifeguard, synchronised swimming, diving and water polo. A group of St. Joseph’s College Year 8 pupils have returned from a bespoke two-week intensive study visit to Chengdu in China as part of a flagship government language programme, delivered by the UCL Institute of Education in partnership with the British Council. The programme aims to get at least 5000 pupils in England on track towards fluency in Mandarin by 2020. The intensive study visit gave the pupils the opportunity to boost the language skills they have already gained since they started studying Mandarin in September 2017. Over the course of two weeks they attended 40 hours of Mandarin lessons at Xihua University, participated in arts and cultural workshops, and worked on projects with Chinese counterparts from host schools. Pupils also enjoyed Chinese cultural events such as tea ceremonies and the Sichuan opera and, alongside their studies, had the opportunity to visit attractions such as the giant panda research centre and the Dujiangyan Irrigation system (a world Heritage site).

SWIMMING LESSONS

Minister of State for School Standards Nick Gibb said, “This intensive study visit provided pupils from St. Joseph’s College with a wonderful opportunity to enhance their Mandarin skills and experience first-hand the culture that shapes this incredibly important language. Young people fluent in Mandarin will be at a significant advantage when competing for jobs with their peers from around the world. The Mandarin Excellence Programme is on track to have 5,000 pupils fluent in Mandarin by 2020. The enthusiasm and energy that both pupils and teachers from St. Joseph’s College are committing to this programme is inspiring and will help build a Britain that’s fit for the future in an increasingly global economy.” St Joseph’s College is in Beulah Hill SE19. See their advert on page 17 for details of their open days.

So book now and go along to the Eventim Apollo for some mayhem in Bethlehem! Further star casting to be announced! Nativity! The Musical runs at the Eventim Apollo, London from 11-29 December. For more information visit www.nativitythemusical.com

Mini Maestro Family Concerts at St Martin-in-theFields Nativity! The Musical

Returning to London for a third successive year, and starring TV and radio presenter Rylan Clark-Neal as ‘The Critic’, the smash-hit Nativity! The Musical is back with more performances than ever before. Simon Lipkin reprises his critically acclaimed role as ‘Mr Poppy’ direct from starring in ‘Nativity Rocks’. Feel-good, funny and full of festive joy, the smash-hit musical was adapted for the stage by Debbie Isitt, the creator of the much-loved films. Featuring all of your favourite sing-a-long hits from the movies including Sparkle and Shine and Nazareth, this is the must-see show this Christmas!

This popular series of classical music events, enjoyed by children and parents alike, enters its thirteenth season this September, with monthly concerts up until March. Each concert is a smorgasbord of musical fun as they encourage the children to sit close to the orchestra, explore stories in the music, sing and clap along - and even conduct! Budding performers are invited to become Mini Maestro Musicians and play alongside the orchestra, and there’s always an opportunity to meet the friendly musicians at the end. There is also deep educational value in these concerts. Countless studies have shown that exposure to classical music at an early age, not to mention playing a musical instrument, is good for brain development. Burntwood School

Primary Times spoke to Helen Shorrock, Principal at Burntwood School. “Choosing a new school for our children can be a daunting experience.I always suggest that it is important to make a careful analysis of the breadth of curriculum offer, whether the school has a good record with regard to examination success and where progression for the youngsters to Higher Education is the norm. A substantial 6th Form is important, as these can offer a wider range of subjects and more flexibility of subject choice for the young person. A good school will also provide a wide range of sporting and extracurricular activities as well as excellent dance, drama and music teaching. It is important that every child is treated as an individual and that the school works in partnership with the parents to encourage the very best from the young person. At Burntwood, we encourage our young women to be articulate, thoughtful individuals who are able to express their opinions whilst also being able to listen to and consider the views of others. We believe strongly that all our young people should have the opportunity to study and embrace a varied curriculum that will allow them to access academic, creative and practical subjects enabling them progress to a host of world class further education establishments. At Burntwood we are proud of the tradition of success that encourages our students to be independent, articulate young women who take power and control over their lives in an informed and intelligent way.

Burntwood School is recognised as a Science Specialist School and has the coveted ‘Sportsmark’ and ‘Artsmark Gold’ awards. Examination results continue to be excellent at Key stage 4 and 5. Burntwood School is an inclusive community. This is recognised by the Rights Respecting UNICEF Gold Award. We provide opportunities for all our learners, whether they have special educational needs or are part of our gifted and talented cohort. We believe that our students deserve the best and at Burntwood we understand the importance of a collaborative approach between staff, students and parents, working together to support the students in reaching their full potential. All of this is embodied in our commitment to provide: ‘The best education today for the women of tomorrow’”

Ark Evelyn Grace Academy Pupils Return from China Trip

A group of Year 8 pupils from Ark Evelyn Grace Academy in Lambeth have returned from a bespoke two-week intensive study visit to Shenyang City in China. The pupils, all aged 12 and 13, are learning Mandarin as part of the Department for Education’s Mandarin Excellence Programme. More than 800 pupils from schools across England travelled to China as part of the programme, where they were hosted by universities in cities including Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai and put their Mandarin skills into practice in a range of reallife situations from shopping to taking public transport. Pupils also enjoyed Chinese cultural events such as traditional Chinese music and paper cuttings, Peking Opera, martial arts and much more. In addition to this, alongside their studies, students had the opportunity to visit attractions such as the Imperial Palace. As the first initiative of its kind, the Mandarin Excellence Programme gives pupils an unprecedented opportunity when it comes to language learning in England. Pupils take on an average of eight hours of Mandarin study every week in order to reach a proficient level of ability in a comparatively short time. Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world and is recognised as a valuable skill for young people in the UK to acquire, with 77 percent of British business leaders surveyed in 2018 saying that speaking Mandarin will give school leavers a career advantage. Meanwhile, research by the British Council has found that Mandarin is the second most important foreign language for the UK’s influence on the global stage. For more information, please visit www.evelyngraceacademy.org.

Students show the highest levels of respect and tolerance towards each other; they are well behaved in lessons, work hard and want to do well; they are well spoken, and demonstrate confidence and maturity. Ofsted

Easing Those ‘Big School’ Worries

Starting secondary school is a big change in a child’s life. That’s why Harris Academy Bermondsey (HAB) has developed some exciting and enjoyable ways to help girls settle in. It all starts during the last year of primary school, when girls are invited to the academy for welcome evenings and special activities to get them used to learning in secondary school. They might investigate acids in the science labs, for example, use drama to bring a poem to life, review French music styles, or even try non-contact boxing. Lead Practitioner Dr Hay told Primary Times, “It’s all about making students feel like HAB girls even in Year 6. Familiarity with the other girls, teachers, buildings and systems all helps to ease some of those ‘big school’ worries.” Year 7 HAB girls also visit their old primary schools to speak with pupils about what it’s like at secondary school. “They talk about making friends, extracurricular clubs, homework, uniforms and how to use a timetable – which can be a bit scary to think about when you are still at primary school,” says Dr Hay. “The Year 7 girls also proudly opened their school bags to display their exercise books, allowing the primary pupils to ask questions about how they organise themselves for a school day and how a school planner works. The primary pupils appreciated the array of stationery!” The school has even made some short films to help new students get used to, for example, using a timetable and the new lunch time routine. You can see them at www.harrisbermondsey.org. uk/how-to-films Year 6 students enjoy a science lesson with Dr Hay, during one of the transition evenings.

James Allen’s Girls’ School

James Allen’s Girls’ School has been inspiring and educating pupils for over 270 years and is the oldest girls’ school in London. At JAGS, teaching a sense of social responsibility and encouraging pupils to play active roles in the community is as important as the school curriculum. Diversity is their strength and they strive to help all girls fulfil their potential. JAGS welcomes girls aged 4-18, with admission primarily at 4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+. Their pupils achieve consistently fantastic results, with 76% of A Levels graded A*/A and 92% of GCSES graded A*/A in 2018. However, a JAGS pupil prides themselves on much more than this, using and developing their own creative, athletic and social skills to act upon concerns for others, whilst developing their own self-confidence and independence. JAGS strives to attract intellectually curious girls, regardless of their economic background. Their bursaries are crucial in making them accessible to everyone, not just to those whose families can afford the fees. They have their own means-tested bursary scheme for all year groups from 11+ entry upwards. Bursaries are subject to financial circumstances and can offer financial assistance for up to 100% of the fees, as well as the costs of uniform, travel, school trips and lunches. Currently, their bursaries cover well over 80% of all fees for the 130 pupils whose families receive them. Further information can be found on their website, www.jags.org.uk.

Their ethos, LEAP which stands for Leadership, Enquiry, Aspiration and Perseverance is at the heart of everything they do. They believe these values are crucial to young people in their pursuit of academic excellence, and for forging successful careers beyond the Academy gates. Each of these strands permeate daily life at Harris Academy Peckham, as they inform assessment, teaching and learning as well as behaviour for learning policies. Harris Academy Peckham expect all of their students to demonstrate excellent leadership skills within and beyond the classroom, using eloquent and appropriate communication skills. An Evening on Diversity and Leadership – St Dunstan’s College St Dunstan’s College was delighted to host ‘An Evening on Diversity and Leadership’ on Tuesday 25 June, as part of this year’s St Dunstan’s Festival. The evening included special guests Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Ellah Allfrey OBE, LGBT+ author Shaun Dellenty, Cllr Brenda Dacres and the Royal London’s Glenn Hammet, who all formed the event’s panel. During the evening, the guests spoke about their own experiences, including the challenges they have all faced, and where they think work is still needed to be done to ensure there is diversity in leadership positions and across society. The event, which was held at the Jubilee Grounds, was student-led and was organised by the College’s Equalities Society, who had requested an event to discuss diversity at this year’s festival. Sixth Former, Beth, who is part of the society told Primary Times, ‘I really wanted to have an event at this year’s festival which celebrated the diversity of our College, whilst raising awareness of the importance of diversity within leadership roles. The event was a big success with the audience getting very involved in the Q&A with the panel and discussing important issues.’ St Dunstan’s Headmaster, Nicholas Hewlett, who introduced the special guests, added, ‘We were honoured to host an evening with a focus on diversity and leadership where we were joined by special guests including Baroness Doreen Lawrence and Shaun Dellenty. The evening was led by a group of students from St Dunstan’s Sixth Form and the questions put to the panel focused on real issues such as minority representation in parliament, racism in the police force and LGBT+ awareness within schools. The panel agreed that progress has been made in many areas, but that there is still much work to do especially in today’s climate.’ The evening was attended by more than 100 guests including students, parents, former students and members of the local community. The event was just one of the events hosted by St Dunstan’s College as part of this year’s two-week St Dunstan’s Festival.

St Saviour’s and St Olave’s

St Saviour’s and St Olave’s is a popular CE girls’ school situated close to some of London’s most historic and famous landmarks and amenities. The ethos of the school is built on Christian principles and can be described as compassionate, reflective, inclusive, supportive and transformative. The school’s latest SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist schools) Inspection report in March judged St Saviour’s and St Olave’s to be ‘Excellent’ - the highest rating - in every respect. Headteacher Catherine May told Primary Times, ‘The school is an oasis for staff and students in the middle of inner London. We are a multi-cultural school which admits students of other faiths and of no faith, as well as Christians. Every member of the community is valued, with high expectations of all and from all.’ Students say that they feel safe and appreciate having a ‘voice’ in the school. Dulwich College is one of the UK’s top independent schools for boys aged 7-18. It is recognised for its academic excellence, its confident yet unpretentious boys, and its diverse and welcoming community. Help with School Fees Financial support of academically bright boys from all economic backgrounds is one of the College’s core values. Over 35% of boys are supported with financial awards. Each year over £3m is granted to support Bursaries and £1m is awarded in Scholarships. An Outstanding Education Dulwich College’s aim is to develop the natural talents and abilities of each boy, giving them the opportunity to excel in every aspect of life. College facilities include brand new laboratories, a theatre, music rooms, art studios, a Sports Club, a garden and a beautiful campus of 75 acres. The members of the teaching staff are highly experienced and passionate about their subjects, and class sizes are small with just 18 or 20 boys and smaller at A-level. With excellent GCSEs and A-levels, boys attend top universities and increasingly, take up the opportunities of prestigious paid Apprenticeships with major international companies. Many boys choose to work in Medicine, Engineering and the Law, and others will take up a number of jobs not yet dreamt of in entrepreneurial, technological or cybernetic and innovative enterprises. And some boys become actors, musicians, sportsmen, writers, historians and artists.

A Dulwich College Bursary A Dulwich College Bursary is the offer of financial assistance to cover the cost of fees - in full or in part. Bursaries range from 100% of fees to 10% of fees. The majority of awards are between 100% and 75%. Bursaries provide fee support to the families of boys who pass the entrance examinations and interview and are offered a place, but whose financial circumstances mean they cannot afford to pay (in full or in part) the school fees. Boys who are offered a place, with or without a Bursary and/or Scholarship, are almost all in the top 1520% of academic ability for their age group across the UK. A Dulwich College Bursary is meanstested. In making an award, the College’s Bursary Committee takes into account family income, assets and other factors. As a broad guideline, families whose total income is £35,000 pa or less might receive a Bursary of 100% of school fees and families whose total income is around £65,000 pa might receive financial support of 50% of school fees. These figures are indicative only. For all confidential Bursary enquiries and a tour of the College, contact the Registrar, Mrs Sarah Betts on bettss@dulwich.org.uk or 020 8299 9263. Alternatively, you can attend their Open Morning on Saturday 5 October, 9.30am-12 noon. There is no need to book and all are welcome. Mary’s Meals is asking you to bring hope to a hungry child on World Porridge Day, Thursday 10 October. Children all over the world are preparing for the new term, including more than 1.2 million learners who receive a daily meal from Mary’s Meals. The charity works with some of the world’s poorest communities to set up school feeding programmes that encourage children to attend class, learn, and work towards a better future. World Porridge Day celebrates the huge difference that a daily mug of porridge from Mary’s Meals makes in the lives of chronically hungry children. This October, schools across the UK will be joining in with the Porridge Smiles fundraising campaign to send a real message of hope to children living in poverty. Mary’s Meals is inviting you to host a porridge party fundraiser at school, any time in October. It’s a great way to bring staff, pupils and parents together, take a photo of yourself enjoying a bowl of porridge and share it on social media using #PorridgeSmiles. To request your free Porridge Smiles party pack – which includes tips for setting up your party and a poster to publicise your event – visit www.worldporridgeday.com and complete the online form. You’ll also be able to read a selection of Perfect Porridge recipes from celebrities and top chefs too. Your school’s fundraising will make a huge difference to children receiving Mary’s Meals.

Principal Kim told Primary Times, “Stagecoach Shirley has been operating for 22 years and we are proud of all of the children we have nurtured through the years, giving them Creative Courage for Life. In September 2019 we are also pleased to be opening our very own Further Stages class for students aged 15 years and over. Through in-depth training and master classes, these teenagers are encouraged to hone their performance skills, working as a small theatre company. They are also prepared for any auditions to theatre and vocational drama schools. This will be in addition to the popular Early Stages classes we run for children aged 4-6 years, and our Main Stages classes for children aged 6-15 years. It’s going to be a very exciting time for Stagecoach Shirley!”

Elmer The Patchwork Elephant Fights Bullying

Anti-bullying charity Kidscape have teamed up with Andersen Press, publishers of the beloved Elmer books, to promote Friendship Friday this November. Friendship Friday is celebrated in nurseries and primary schools throughout England and Wales, helping children build happy and healthy relationships for life. The free Friendship Friday resource pack is available from the Kidscape website as Early Years staff begin to plan their activities for the new school year. Friendship Friday will take place on Friday 8 November, and is an opportunity to build bullying prevention into Early Years education and involve younger children in plans for Anti-Bullying Week. David McKee, creator of Elmer, told Primary Times, “For nearly 30 years now Elmer has stood for accepting who you are and celebrating difference. We are all different, with so many differences, difference of colour, of accents, but also of size, shape and how we dress. The differences are what make the world so rich. If Elmer can help in any way, no matter how small, to encourage friendships then he will, he tells me, feel very proud. As will I as his creator.” Kidscape can provide content and tips regarding bullying and friendship. For more information, please visit www.kidscape.org.uk.
