Film Preview Guide Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation

The nation’s favourite monster family are back and this adventure promises to be bigger and better than ever. Drac and the family are taking a summer vacation from providing everyone else’s vacation at the hotel, and embark on a holiday on a luxury monster cruise ship. It’s smooth sailing for Drac’s Pack as the monsters indulge in all of the shipboard fun the cruise has to offer, from monster volleyball to exotic excursions, and catching up on their moon tans. However, the dream vacation turns into a nightmare when Mavis realises Drac has fallen for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka. Little do they know that his “too good to be true” love interest is actually a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing, ancient nemesis to Dracula and all other monsters, and she hides a dangerous secret that could destroy all of monsterkind. Catch the latest instalment in the Hotel Transylvania adventure from 27 July.

Incredibles 2

The Parr family are back, with their incredible story picking up where the previous film finished in 2004. Helen, aka Elastigirl, continues to fight crime using her stretching powers, whilst also leading a campaign to bring Supers back. Meanwhile, Bob navigates the dayto-day heroics of ‘normal’ life at home with Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack, whose superpowers are about to be discovered.Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone by their side. They must find a way to work together again – which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible. Incredibles 2 bursts into cinemas on 13 July.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

TheTeenTitans are back with the voice of Greg Davies inTeenTitans Go! to the Movies. It seems to theTeens that all the major superheroes are starring in their own movies - everyone but theTeenTitans, that is. Leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, theTeenTitans head toTinselTown, determined to pull off their dream. The group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, and things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of theTeenTitans themselves on the line.Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is a clever, tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, and comes to cinemas on 3 August. 4

Happy Birthday Sooty

Sooty is to celebrate his official 70th birthday on Thursday 19 July. The legendary yellow glove puppet was bought on Blackpool North Pier in 1948 by Harry Corbett, who was looking to entertain his children whilst on their summer holiday. Having been on the hands of Harry’s son Matthew Corbett during the 70s/80s/90s, Sooty has now been fronted for twenty years on ITV by Richard Cadell. Joined by his trusty sidekicks Sweep and Soo, Sooty’s appeal has continued to endure across generations of families. For his 70th birthday, Sooty has decided to film a brand new series of The Sooty Show. These six brilliant new episodes will be available to watch later this year on Sooty’s brand new YouTube channel, and will feature cameos from some of Sooty’s celebrity friends, including Peter Andre, John Challis and Lisa Riley. The brand-new YouTube channel will also showcase some of The Sooty Show’s best episodes from Sooty’s 70 years as well as exclusive educational content and activities.

What a Surprise! The Duchess of Cornwall visited the Garden Museum at the end of June to present awards to the joint winners of the 2018 British Flowers Week competition, held at the Museum for the first time. The Duchess also met a group of volunteers from Floral Angels, a charity which recycles the flowers leftover from events and restyles them for those in need. During her visit, the Duchess bumped into a group from Archbishop Sumner Primary School who were making fruit salads in the museum’s new Learning Studio kitchen. A lovely surprise for all concerned!

Croydon Bikeability

Last year Croydon held a cycling event in the town centre, traffic was diverted and a track/route was installed. There were races for schools to compete against each other and races for both amateur and professional riders. Croydon school children were also invited to take part demonstrating their Bikeability skills to everyone who attended the event. As the school children had all attained level two Bikeability skills, they were able to cycle from their school to the event and back with their instructors. It was a great day, with stalls, music, trick cyclists and other events too. Once again Croydon is offering free Bikeability cycling training courses for children over the summer holidays. All levels of cycling ability are catered for, from complete beginners to children that want to learn how to cycle safely on quiet roads. Children are asked to bring a bike along with them, however, bikes can be supplied for older participants. There are several dates to choose from and hopefully further dates and locations will be added. Depending on the course level, the training can last anywhere

from 45 minutes for complete beginners to eight hours (over two days) for more advanced cyclists. For course details and times, please visit www.cyclinginstructor.com.

An oft-overlooked aspect of coding is how much of a creative outlet it can be for kids, enabling them to express their own thoughts and ideas. When children learn to code by trying out their own ideas, they start to think of themselves as creators and not just consumers of technology. If you have a child who loves playing computer games, then learning to create their own games by attending Spark4Kids’ holiday coding camps this summer might just be their ultimate holiday activity. For more information, visit www.spark4kids.com.

InterHigh Juniors

Many parents would welcome an alternative to those stressful mornings – the school run, packed lunches, traffic jams, school uniform, misplaced books and the constant battle against the clock. Having successfully arrived at the school gates, there are still friendship issues, money for school trips, playground mishaps and large classes to contend with. Thousands of parents have already chosen a school that provides an instant solution. After 13 years of running a successful independent online secondary school, InterHigh School is now

interhigh.co.uk

launching its primary school division - InterHigh Juniors. InterHigh Juniors will offer the same quality, flexibility, accessibility and positivity in school as InterHigh, but it will provide a full primary school education. Interhigh Juniors will open Year 5 and Year 6 classes in September. Children from as young as eight will now be able to go to school online and benefit from the rich and engaging experience of the school’s powerful learning platform. Qualified and experienced primary teachers will focus on developing young learners who are inquisitive, vivacious and enterprising. The InterHigh group of schools enables its pupils to develop a love of learning, not only for academic foundations but to equip them with skills for a world of exponential change. Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 15 pupils in any class. This ensures that each pupil receives the vital teacher attention and promotes personalised learning where every child can learn and achieve at their own pace. Lessons are every week day morning of term time and every lesson is recorded. This means pupils, and parents, can revisit the lesson at any time. To keep your child stimulated this summer, you can also join InterHigh Juniors summer school. For more information about InterHigh, please visit www.interhigh.co.uk.

End of an Eventful Year at SJC

As St Joseph’s College approaches the end of the academic year there has been a clear change in culture and achievement as the house competition nears its conclusion and the incumbent senior student leadership body prepare to stand down. Competition for the executive committee of senior students and the Head Boy and Girl has been extremely close this year. Zakariya Boakye–Yiadom has won the coveted role of Head Boy and Jemima Erhabor has won the Head Girl position. Zak and Jemima will work closely with the six new House Captains and govern a total number of 147 students including 24 leaders in Year 7. The house system events and student leadership have been dynamic this year and more and more students are striving to participate in clubs, sports and skills events. The summer term will be concluded with two key events, the school’s Summer Sports Day and the school’s major charity fundraising day. This year the school will work in conjunction with the World Youth Skills Day and attempt to raise as much money as it can for the Youth Charity Foundation as well as the six designated House Charities. Students will get to take part in skills activities during the day that contrast with their day to day subjects. With 500 points on offer in two major events, the house competition is sure to be very close come 20 July.

St Thomas the Apostle

St Thomas the Apostle School and Sixth Form is a boys’ Catholic school with a mixed 6th Form. The school’s intake reflects the multi-faith community in which we live and the school is a popular choice in the local area, with families recognising the outstanding all-round education it is able to provide. Mr E Connolly, the Headteacher, told Primary Times, “The school was very proud of its results in the summer of 2017, with 100% of pupils achieving 8 or more GCSEs at grades A*-C. Our Progress 8 score of 0.91 placed us second in Southwark. In September 2017, a number of our students embarked on university life for the first time, having gained places in top institutions across the country. Many of these students began their secondary education with us, and continued to take advantage of the academic rigour and outstanding support we are able to provide in our sixth form. Each year, a number of students follow our highly regarded Oxbridge Pathway which offers additional coaching and interview preparation. Our achievements have been recognised on a national level, including being awarded the TES UK Secondary School of the Year 2017. The judges observed that “this outstanding school manages to nurture the unique talents of its students alongside rigorous teaching and high expectations”.

We know how challenging it can be trying to choose the right school for your son but, if you do choose to send your son to us, we hope that this will be the start of a long, happy association between your family and our community. We look forward to welcoming you to one of our open events in September, and in the meantime please check our website www.stac.uk.com and Twitter for latest news.”

St Matthew Academy therefore came second out of 19 schools from across the country. The B Team followed them closely by coming in third place. What an incredible achievement from both teams and a testament to the hard work and preparation put in, in the lead up to the event. The students were rewarded with certificates and medals and a pizza lunch with the Headteacher. Well done SMA debaters!

With the end of the school year fast approaching, charity Mary’s Meals are asking you to help impoverished children thrive in school by donating used backpacks to Mary’s Meals. The UK-based school-feeding charity has been transporting lorryloads of school bags to Malawi since 2005. Earlier this year, it was announced that, in total, supporters had gifted an incredible 500,000 filled school bags through The Backpack Project to children receiving lifechanging school meals. The Backpack Project is particularly well supported by young people as part of school recycling projects, which encourage pupils to donate schoolbags and suitable clothing at the end of the final term each year. A backpack – filled with a selection of notepads, pens, school uniform/games kit and basic hygiene items – provides a wonderful gift to an impoverished child and encourages them to excel at school. Supporters can donate complete backpacks and/or individual items. Delighted Lagia, 13, who attends school in Malawi said, “I’m so happy because I have received a backpack. Inside, I found a dress, pens and a hardcover book. I will use the bag every day to carry pens and books when I am coming to school.” Mary’s Meals currently provides a daily school meal to 1,257,278 children in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the

Keeping Up Appearances

Parents of 11-year-olds across the UK will be making last minute preparations for their child’s move to secondary school. But one thing parents can overlook is how their child is actually going to cope with the culture shock of a new environment in which they may feel judged. Here are some tips from The Priory Group – the largest network of mental healthcare hospitals and clinics in the country – for parents to help Year 7s feel confident and positive: Uniform buying Always include your child when stocking up new uniform and equipment and allow some leeway according to their individual tastes. Emphasise personal qualities over appearance Support your pre-teen’s talents that have nothing to do with how she/he looks. Show an interest in their passions and pursuits and regularly praise them. Be positive Try not to make critical remarks about your child’s body or fashion choices. Instead, compliment your child regularly as they take their first steps into the world of secondary education. Be a good role model Your pre-teen is closely watching your lifestyle, habits, and attitudes. Pay attention to the example you are setting, and comments you

might be making. If you’re constantly criticising your own perceived flaws, so will they. Be aware of what’s ‘on trend’ It is natural for teenagers to want to wear the latest fashions and brands whilst trying to settle into a new environment. They should be allowed to embrace individual style.

Prendergast Vale School

All About St Saviour’s & St Olave’s

Lambeth school, St Saviour’s & St Olave’s on the New Kent Road, is a popular CE girls’ school situated close to some of London’s most historic and famous landmarks and amenities. The school itself has fascinating roots going back to 1562, under the Charter of Elizabeth I. The ethos of the school is built on Christian principles which are lived out in a compassionate, reflective, inclusive, supportive and transformative environment. Students say that they feel safe and appreciate having a ‘voice’ in the school. Headteacher Catherine May told Primary Times, “The school is an oasis for staff and students in the middle of inner London. We are a multi-cultural school which admits students of other faiths and of no faith, as well as Christians. Every member of the community is valued, and we have high expectations of all and from all.” St Saviour’s & St Olave’s takes full advantage of a host of world class educational and cultural opportunities. The school is recognised as providing outstanding enrichment, involving a wide range of activities which include every member of staff and all students. Music flourishes and there are opportunities for participation in Japanese, Mandarin, drama, many different sports as well as homework clubs in every subject area. These activities, together with the excellent, comprehensive curriculum, ensure that students receive a fantastic education from Year 7 right through to Year 13, enabling each girl to flourish

academically and personally. The sixth form offers a broad range of subjects and students go on to gain places in the most prestigious universities or follow vocational ambitions with the highest quality apprenticeships.

The Windrush Game

An exciting new game has been launched to commemorate 70 years of the Windrush Generation in Britain, with 20% of proceeds going to the Windrush Justice Fund supporting those affected by the recent Windrush scandal. Every Generation Game: Windrush Edition is a storytelling board game that helps families, friends and communities share their history, identity and culture through the telling of stories. In school or education settings, it can be used to inspire learning about modern British history, and the development of multicultural Britain. Picture and timeline cards in the game illustrate key moments in the history of Britain from 1900 to the present day. These encourage players to share personal stories inspired by what they see or come up with imaginative tales sparked by the people and events depicted. The Windrush Game is a fun and unique way for children to engage with the wider community, and a great activity for community events, playing with older generations in care settings, or at home with family. For more information about the game, visit www. focusgames.com.

Harris Academy Bermondsey

Year 7 students at Harris Academy Bermondsey are getting a chance to tell the world what it’s really like at secondary school in a new short film. Seven students talk about everything from their first day at school and making friends to their favourite subjects, playtime and after school clubs. Primary Times were lucky enough to get quotes from the film, “When I put on the uniform I was really excited and scared at the same time because I was going to a new school and I thought it was a new start for me” says Hafsa. Her friend Ahlia agrees, “In primary school you’re more nurtured and protected but in secondary school that’s where you start to become more mature and where you start to experience where life is going to begin” she says. All the students say they settled in well, helped by the teachers who were really welcoming and encouraging. “The teachers encourage and stretch us by giving us work that makes us feel comfortable,” says Ahlia. “They don’t give us work that’s too easy and they don’t give us work that’s too hard. They give us work that we’re going be able to complete and that we’re going to improve from.” Students say they especially enjoy the huge range of after-

school clubs including football, badminton, chess, Mandarin, boxing, dance, art and much, much more. “I’ve enjoyed Year 7 because everyone is welcoming and you know they are like a family and everyone will always be with you and everyone is kind to each other.” says Hinna. They are proud of the outstanding academic progress students make but the school’s nurturing ethos and wide range of extracurricular activities also contribute to their success. In recent years, girls have won international enterprise competitions in Brussels and New York, gained their Duke of Edinburgh’s awards, sung at the Royal Albert Hall, taken part in public speaking challenges and competed in cheerleading contests. Amanda Compton, Headteacher, believes providing students with a firm foundation to do well not only academically but in all areas of life is key. She told Primary Times, “The opportunities we offer encourage students to develop a strong sense of self-worth. We want them to become articulate young adults who consider themselves responsible global citizens. Our curriculum is forward-looking and we have a reputation for offering a genuinely comprehensive education in an environment that is caring, happy, safe and inclusive. Faiths, beliefs and traditions are respected and we work hard to establish positive working partnerships with our parents. To be ranked in the top 10% of schools nationally is something we are all extremely proud of, but the really important thing for us is that the students are performing so well.” Norbury Manor is now taking admissions applications for September 2019.

Harris Academy Peckham

“Harris Academy Peckham is set in the very heart of its community and is a thriving, vibrant school led with ambition and aspiration. This year we have launched our new ethos, LEAP which stands for Leadership, Enquiry, Aspiration and Perseverance. We feel these values are crucial to our young people in their pursuit of academic excellence, and for forging successful careers beyond the Academy gates. Each of these strands permeates daily life at Harris Academy Peckham, as they inform our assessments, teaching and learning, as well as behaviour for learning policies. We expect all of our students to demonstrate excellent leadership skills within and beyond the classroom, using eloquent and appropriate communication skills. We want our learners to be curious, adopting an enquiring mind to seek out new knowledge. We expect every child to surpass expectations, to aim high and therefore be aspirational in their academic and personal development. Finally, to truly reach their potential, the ability to build the resilience required even when faced with difficult challenges, is essential; therefore perseverance is an attribute which we train our students in. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum as well as remarkable facilities at the Academy. We aim to keep class sizes small to increase the one to one attention our students can receive from staff and we have a strong pastoral team to support the welfare of our students. We look forward to inviting you to our Open Events in the autumn so we can show you more of the excellent achievements of our students.”

RSPCA’s Compassionate Class

A pilot RSPCA scheme that helps children to learn about animal welfare is now being rolled out nationally - and your school could get involved. Earlier this year, the RSPCA launched a pilot teaching resource, Compassionate Class, for schools in Manchester to encourage children to learn about animal welfare. The aim is to inspire the next generation of compassionate individuals and prevent cruelty to animals in the future. Following the huge success of the pilot project, the animal welfare charity is rolling the scheme out nationally and Key Stage 2 classes are being asked to sign up. The resources are designed to fit into the national curriculum covering the PSHE in England and PSE in Wales curriculum plus they support Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education (SMSC) and other core subjects. The programme uses enquiry-led learning to create debate about animal welfare which is promoted by the interactive resources available for schools who sign up. There will be more resources for schools to try this year and the opportunity to showcase what they have learnt by entering a competition to win the title of ‘The Most Compassionate Class of 2019’. Plus there are a number of visits to RSPCA animal centres to be won so the children can see the RSPCA in action and the animals they care for. An Interview with Jaqueline Wilson Jaqueline Wilson, world class author and all-round lovely person, has recently released the latest in her Hetty Feather series. Rose Rivers is a Victorian tale that tells the story of a young girl who lives with her artist father and fragile mother. She has everything money could buy, but it’s not enough. When a new nursemaid, Clover Moon, joins the household, Rose finds a true friend, and starts to learn about the world outside the house. Rachel Benson from Primary Times was lucky enough to catch up with Jaqueline Wilson upon the release of Rose Rivers. Jaqueline willingly gave up part of her Saturday morning, speaking to us right after her daily ritual of writing for at least an hour. She is cheerful, humorous and humble, and as we talk about everything from social media to whether Margate beaches still have donkeys, she shares some of her thoughts on her latest release. What was your inspiration for Rose Rivers? I thought it might be quite interesting to write about a Victorian girl who on the surface seems to have every privilege but has just turned 13. Most Victorian girls at that time didn’t get sent away to school like Rose’s brother and you were not expected to think about having a career. You were expected to float around the house arranging flowers and doing not very much. Rose is bright and restless and fed up with things and I thought I’d ‘put the cat among the pigeons’ - in the course of the novel she forges two friendships that in those times and for her family would be considered inappropriate. She makes friends with the new nursery maid who is actually the Clover Moon of the previous book and with a young, slightly wild man, with dark good looks. It was interesting for me to think what life was like for teenage girls then, and though it seems so totally different from a current 13 year old, looking at their social media sites and being very knowledgeable, I think all 13 year olds get restless and fed up and have ‘inappropriate’ crushes. I hope that any girls reading Rose Rivers would identify with Rose and understand her.

All your stories are grounded in reality and so relatable. Was that a deliberate choice? It was. When I was growing up in the fifties and early sixties, I read avidly, but children’s books mostly had happy endings and were a little bit illogical. It was a very happy middle class atmosphere and from when I was about 8 or 9 I used to try and find adult books that had children in them because I found that then you could read about what life was really like. I knew I wanted to be a writer from when I was about 6 years old and I did seriously think ‘right, when I grow up, if I get lucky enough to be able to have books published, I want them to be as realistic as possible so that children can read them and believe in the characters.’ Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

‘Double Act’ is coming to the Polka Theatre. Do you think that theatre is another way of showing reality? It is, and it’s also very enjoyable for me because it’s the only opportunity a writer gets to see how their characters go down with people. In a crowded theatre it’s just magical.

What words of wisdom do you have for budding young writers? Read lots, simply because I’ve never met a writer that isn’t a keen reader too. I often suggest to children to keep a diary, in whichever form they want, simply because so many people want to be writers but never get round to it, if you keep a diary and just write a tiny bit each day, it’s surprising, if you keep it up, how much you can actually get done. It’s simply getting words on paper. When you’re writing just for fun, just for yourself, you could write anything you want to as long as you’re still interested in it. If you get fed up, it isn’t a sin to stop writing a story. Write something else. The whole thing is not to plan it out beforehand. Surprise yourself with what you’re writing. If you want to be an imaginative writer, it’s good to remember that imagining it and somehow getting it down on paper are the two most important things.

Rose Rivers is a wonderful tale for all young readers, and is available online and from all good book shops for £9.99. 2 July - 2 Sept 2018
