Primary Schools Making Truffula Flowers
This autumn, 300 students from eight Primary schools in Lambeth and Southwark are creating ‘Truffula flowers’ in response to The Old Vic’s production of Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax. These flowers will be exhibited in the front of house areas of the theatre with messages to audience members watching the show about looking after our planet and the limited resources available to us. Under the leadership of Designer Fin Redshaw and Workshop Director Toby Peach, all ‘Truffula flowers’ created by the students will be made predominantly from recycled materials from the schools and the theatre. The workshop looks at the importance of trees and why we have to look after them, just like the Lorax looks after the Truffula Trees. Primary Schools Club is a gateway to theatre for 10 local schools classes each year. Introducing them to The Old Vic’s iconic building and extraordinary theatre productions, they strive to engage young, local audiences in unforgettable experiences that will ignite a love of theatre for years to come. Look out for the Truffula flowers exhibited across the theatre throughout the run of Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax from 15 October to 5 November. Photo credit: Manuel Harlan 4

Parrots Don’t Live in the City!
Lucy Reynolds and Jenna Herman are two South London mums but they are also an author/poet and illustrator respectively. Parrots Don’t Live in the City! is the first in a series of children’s storybooks from the pair. The idea was planted after Lucy spotted a parakeet in Burgess Park but her husband wouldn’t believe her. A few weeks later she found a brilliant green feather hiding amongst the leaves, and the seed for the story was sown. Two years and lots of scribbles, doodles and cups of tea later, they have a successful first title under their belts and more in the pipeline coming soon. They’ve read their books to hundreds of children in schools, nurseries and playgroups across the capital, and they’ve been blown away by their reaction. Perfect for two to six year olds, the book is written in easy rhyming couplets, with beautiful hand-drawn illustrations, which lead young readers into a world of hidden birds and minibeasts in search of one very special creature…
A Unique Kids Book Club
Bookabees, a new book club solely for kids, aims to create a magical and educational experience around children’s reading. With 31% of children unable to find things to read which interest them, Bookabees mission is simple - to get more of the right books into more children’s hands. The ideal gift experience for parents, grandparents or relatives to give, Bookabees enables you to choose from three subscription levels – Little (one book per month @ £4.99), Big (three books per month @ £8.99) and Bigger (5 books per month @ £10.99). Suitable for children 0-11yrs, Bookabees curates personalised book lists for each child based on their likes, dislikes and previous book selections. It then amalgamates this information with a clever ‘recommended for’ algorithm and the handpicked lists are popped in a queue ready to be viewed. The titles in the top of the queue are delivered each month along with a range of fun, educational activity surprises such as stickers, paper aeroplanes, bookmarks and make your own do not disturb signs. The Bookabees subscription packages are 100% flexible and the level can be changed or cancelled at any time. Inspire your child’s love of reading by signing up at www.bookabees.com.

Did you know that there was an African Roman Emperor? And, that there were black people here in Britain in the Georgian and Victorian era? Or, that thousands of black men and women served in both World Wars fighting for Britain? This year marks the 30th anniversary of Black History Month. The dedicated month was established to promote and teach young people the fascinating and expansive Black History of this country. London to Brighton
The 2017 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, on Sunday 5 November will be creating an Entente Cordiale in November as the event adopts a French flavour. Germany’s Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz might have invented the world’s first horseless carriage, but the French dominated the early days of the automobile industry. In 1903 alone, more than 30,000 cars were built in France - representing almost half the world’s total production that year. The 2017 Run will welcome many of those pioneering French marques. Two of those names will be familiar to everyone – heading the entry will be cars from Renault (established 1899) and Peugeot (first car built in 1889). They will be joined by cars from more than a dozen other marques. This year, the longest running motoring event in the world will be held, as ever, on the first Sunday in November. As dawn breaks a red flag will be ceremoniously torn and the 400 entries will start their journey from capital to coast. The Run celebrates the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act in November 1896, also known as the Red Flag Act and refers to a time when these new-fangled machines had to follow a man holding a red flag. The veteran car run is open to all vehicles built before 1905. The Run is just one element of the Royal Automobile Club’s London Motor Week. A full week crammed with motoring events, awards and functions, with popular events including the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show on Saturday 4 November. For more details of the event, please visit www.veterancarrun. com.

New Swim School for Croydon
Angela’s Swim School is a successful franchise established by former International swimmer Angela Wilson. The Southwark and Greenwich boroughs are owned and managed by Sara Harrison, a successful business woman in her own right. Starting with one pool and two instructors three years ago, Sara now has numerous pools throughout the boroughs, employs over twenty instructors and has in excess of 700 clients swimming weekly. Oh and she also won the prestigious ‘Nat West’ New Women Franchisee of the Year award! We asked Sara what motivated her to take on the Croydon area. She told us, “the opportunity to take on two new pools at ‘St Giles School’ and ‘The Garwood Centre’ was simply something I could not ignore. They complement our existing pools especially the St Joseph’s College venue in Upper Norwood.” “Babies to Adults, beginners to improvers, we develop water confidence and swimming technique at a pace that suits the individual swimmer, with 4/5 swimmers to one instructor.” Space is limited. To find out more, email Sara on croydon@ angelasswimschool.co.uk or ring 07872 932 642.

St Matthew Academy Late Summer Fayre
With generosity of spirit, ‘The Friends of St Matthew Academy’ together with Academy staff, led the community in a traditional fundraising effort at the SMA Late Summer Fayre in September. This event was about the community coming together to raise money for the Academy’s chosen charity, the Children’s Ward at Lewisham Hospital, a cause for which pupils and staff at SMA have been raising money over recent terms, and to begin fundraising for a new Academy minibus.
Heidi Alexander MP, an enthusiastic supporter of St Matthew Academy, opened the Fayre with words of encouragement and celebration. Heidi referenced the wonderful GCSE results achieved by the pupils of St Matthew Academy in August – results which were the best in the Academy’s history with 70% of pupils achieving Grade 4 or better in English and Maths. Attractions at the Fayre included traditional games – shuffleboard, guess the number of sweets in the jar and throwing wet sponges at the teachers in the stocks. More modern activities included the giant bouncy cockerel slide and the smoothie bike. There was also an eagerly anticipated raffle, barbequed burgers and sausages, face painting, Lewisham Hospital and Metropolitan Police stalls – in fact a myriad of activities and prizes which any Summer Fayre would have been proud to host. St Matthew Academy and ‘Friends’ look forward to hosting more events in support of the Children’s Ward at Lewisham Hospital and other Academy goals, in the very near future. Watch this space!

Find out more at www.migrationmuseum. org. To complement this exhibition the museum’s education team
