Sparrow Soars Upwards

Almost half a million people across the UK spent an hour watching the birds that visit their garden or outdoor space as part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch earlier this year, counting more than 7.5 million birds in total. The house sparrow remains at the top of the UK Big Garden Birdwatch rankings with almost 1.2 million sightings throughout the weekend but for many species fewer birds were recorded than in 2018. In Greater London, the top three most common garden visitors, in order, were house sparrow, wood pigeon and starling. House sparrows showed a 3.5% increase across London gardens, keeping them top of the charts for London. UK house sparrow numbers, reported by participants since the Big Garden Birdwatch began, have fallen by 56%, but in recent years, national numbers have slowly started to rise again, giving conservationists hope that at least a partial recovery may be happening. For a full round-up of all the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch results and to see which birds were visiting gardens where you live, visit www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch Photo credit: Ray Kennedy (rspb-images.com)

The National Literacy Trust and Macmillan Children’s Books are running an exciting competition for children aged 5-11 to celebrate The Gruffalo’s 20th birthday. Primary school pupils have the chance to write their very own stories about what happened next to their favourite character from the book, after the Gruffalo flees and Mouse found the nut. Taking inspiration from Julia Donaldson’s wonderful words and Axel Scheffler’s iconic illustrations, children will be able tell their stories using prose, rhyme and/or pictures. There are a range of exciting activities to bring the competition and the magical world of The Gruffalo to life in primary schools throughout the UK. All participating schools will receive a printed poster and colourful bookmarks for pupils, and will be able to download an activity pack complete with fun ideas, a toolkit to transform classrooms into the deep dark wood, and a certificate to celebrate every child who has taken part. The winning pupil will receive a special 20th birthday copy of The Gruffalo signed by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, an incredible hamper filled with Gruffalo goodies, as well as £250 worth of books from Pan Macmillan for their school. What’s more – these prizes will be delivered by the Gruffalo, himself! Ten runners up will also receive a signed copy of The Gruffalo. Strawberry Ripple Ice Cream

As the weather gets warmer (we hope!), what better way to cool yourselves down than a delicious, healthy ice-cream straight from your own kitchen? Mrs Bun the Baker shares her secrets on this healthy sweet treat from her book ‘Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker’. The easy-to-follow, child-friendly cookbook is packed with favourites and tried and tested, approved and munched recipes from the Young Buns who attend the award-winning cookery school. This book gives children an insight into how exciting baking can be and will inspire confidence in adults who have never baked before.

Repeat for all the strawberries. Avoid creating big pieces as they will only end up as lumps of ice in the final ice-cream.

Ingredients – you will need:

container and place this into the freezer. Be patient as you will need to leave it for at least 6 hours before you can eat the ice-cream! If you take it out 10 minutes before you want it, the finished ice-cream will be easier to scoop.

FROM KITCHEN ZERO

TO BAKING HERO!

15 strawberries 225ml double cream: use extra thick cream, if you prefer – you don’t need to whip it! 100ml sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 75ml single cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar: optional

Method

1. Have a 500ml freezer-friendly container at hand 2. Wash the strawberries and remove their stalks. Get a strawberry,

hold it between your thumb and finger, and squish it into a bowl.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

3. Pour the double cream into a jug. Whisk the cream until it’s sticking to the whisk - it should look like ice-cream on top of a cone. Add in the condensed milk, vanilla essence, single cream and the strawberries. 4. Mix the ingredients up for a ripple effect – but don’t over mix or you’ll have pink ice-cream with no swirls! Have a taste. If it’s not sweet enough for you, add in some or all of the icing sugar. 5. Pour the mixture into a 500ml freezer-friendly plastic

Variations

Use other berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries – or use lots of different berries together. Add some fudge pieces and squeeze in some toffee sauce before it goes in the freezer. For chocolate-chip ice-cream, add chunks of your favourite chocolate: plain, milk or white. Or, again, mix them together. Chop and mash a banana for a delicious banana ice-cream. Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net

This summer, the Unicorn Theatre explores the world of Aesop’s Fables. Nine of the theatre’s favourite playwrights have rewritten their favourite fable for today’s audience. The result is a combination of funny and thought-provoking retellings like no other – a tribute to how fresh, bold and vibrant the classics remain today. There will be two versions of the show for different age groups, one for ages 4 – 7 and one for ages 8 – 12. Both are directed by Justin Audibert, the Unicorn’s new Artistic Director, and Rebecca Bagshaw. The fables are retold with an exciting and possibly unexpected twist. For example, EV Crowe reworks the classic The Tortoise and the Hare into a tale of a playdate between two children and their mothers, and Chris Thorpe questions why we tell stories at all with his take on The Boy and the Filberts. Other writers include Somalia Seaton, Luke Barnes and Chris Goode. Opening on 16 June and playing into the Summer holidays, Aesop’s Fables is a bold, modern and playfully surprising show for families. Tickets range from £8 - £20 and you can save 15% when booking four tickets at once with the theatre’s Friends and Family Offer. For more information or to book, visit www.unicorntheatre.com/AesopsFables.

Forries Education Has a New Nursery!

Forries Education has been running pre and after school Forest School sessions for several years at various locations in South East London including Eliot Pit Wood, at the top of St Austell Road in Blackheath. They are really pleased to be launching a new nursery school there in September this year. This will run during Lewisham term times from Tuesday to Thursday between 9.30am and 1.30pm. They’re intending to run from Monday to Friday from January 2020. The Forest School philosophy is to run as much of the school as possible outdoors, but they will be using All Saints Church on the Heath as the drop-off and collection place and when it is not safe to venture into the woods. They plan to have a group of 16 children with 4 adult leaders. Some of the learning will be adult-led as Forries Education must fulfil certain requirements set down by Ofsted, such as numeracy, literacy, nature and learning about our world. They believe though that some of the most important learning comes through play, and there will be lots of time for that!

Looking for a secondary school for 2020? It’s time to choose Conisborough College!

Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich aims to develop students with character, commitment, courage and conscience who become academically and personally successful, and lead in their community. The school helps students not only to develop academically but also to explore the world, think about where they fit into it and what they can offer. Last term, for example, girls in Year 7 enjoyed a challenging trip to the beautiful Lake District as part of their Outward Bound activity programme, taking part in resilience-building activities including camping in the wild and rock climbing. You can see some of them in the picture.

Sixth formers took part in a national public speaking competition at the Royal Academy, giving a presentation on an artwork of their choice to the Academy’s president. “It made me feel more confident about public speaking and I think it will help me get work experience involving public speaking too,” said Jamilla,Year 12. The school’s Art students also recreated Marcel Duchamp’s famous ‘Sixteen Miles of String’ installation in the Horniman Museum. Students filled the museum’s conservatory with black elastic, creating a tangled mess and making it difficult for the audience to move in the space freely. The installation was used as a tool to discuss issues around accessibility to culture for local young people. In its most recent Ofsted report, the school was described as offering “a superb range of opportunities”. Air Quality Monitoring Backpacks Trial

A sample of Primary school pupils will carry special backpacks with state-of-the-art air quality sensors on their journey to and from school to help monitor the levels of toxic air young Londoners are exposed to, in a new scheme launched by the Mayor, Sadiq Khan. 250 pupils from five London primary schools in Southwark, Richmond, Greenwich, Haringey and Hammersmith and Fulham will take part in the project, wearing specially adapted backpacks to and from school for a week. The children will use the backpacks like a normal bag (the monitor takes up one pocket, leaving plenty of room for school equipment), allowing the monitors to record pollutant levels on each child’s journey to school and throughout the school day. The data from this study will allow King’s scientists to analyse at which point of their journey to school (or which part of their school day) children are exposed to the most pollution. They will also be able to the compare the exposure of children who have similar journeys but take different routes and travel modes and then make recommendations of how children can reduce their exposure in future. The project itself was devised by City Hall and C40 Cities. Once this approach and technology has been proven in London, the goal is to see it introduced in cities around the world. For more information about the trial, please visit www.london.gov.uk. Photo credit: Courtesy of GLA

A shocking one in three of the world’s schools lack adequate toilets, compromising children’s human rights to sanitation and leaving them to either use dirty, unsafe pits, go in the open, or stay at home, resulting in missed school days and loss of potential. WaterAid Voices is one way that the charity hopes to get more people talking about an issue that impacts the lives of many every day, including young people in some of the world’s poorest places. Polar Science Inspires Year 6

If you were travelling to the South Pole, what food should you take? This was just one of the science topics Year 6 girls learned about at a special event recently organised by Harris Academy Bermondsey to help primary school students make the transition to science lessons at secondary school. The evening was created in partnership with STEM Learning UK as part of the Polar Explorer Programme, with students planning their own Polar expedition and burning crisps to determine which would give them enough energy to get to the South Pole. The girls and their parents also took part in experiments like using liquid nitrogen to shrink a balloon and creating a banana hammer to bang a nail into a piece of wood! Students learnt about the path of a laser using dry ice, while sixth form physics students gave the girls small static electric shocks using a Van de Graaff generator. There were also sessions on magnetic fields and the chemistry of hot and cold reactions. “I enjoyed the experiments because they were interactive, and the Harris Academy Bermondsey students took care of us,” said one Year 6 pupil. Students also listened to inspirational talks from women working in science, technology and engineering, who were all fantastic role models. It was a really successful evening with over 350 pupils and their parents coming along. The school is confident it will really help girls joining them in September 2019 to get off to a flying start with STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). To find out more about the school, visit www.harrisbermondsey.org.uk . For more information on STEM Learning UK, head to www.stem.org.uk

Little Green Fingers... National Children’s Gardening Week 25 May - 2 June Gardening comes naturally to children. Endlessly curious, children are often delighted to learn first hand where the food on their plate comes from and how big plants grow from tiny seeds. Allowing them to get outdoors and get their hands dirty has incredible benefits and there is no better time to start exploring than National Children’s Gardening Week 2019, which runs from 25 May – 2 June. To help spark your children’s enthusiasm, we have outlined some of our favourite activities to get the kids gardening.

Grow a Hanging Harvest Not everyone has space for a full vegetable patch in their garden, so the humble hanging basket can be a great way to save space, but still pack in the produce. Encourage your children to get their hands messy and fill a lined basket with compost. Put your chosen plants into the compost, and ensure the kids check the basket every day and water regularly. Cherry tomatoes, strawberry plants, chives, basil, parsley and lettuce will all produce loads of tasty food throughout the summer months if cared for well.

Start with Seeds A great way to introduce your children to gardening is simply by planting a packet of seeds on your windowsill. Use an eggbox as your tray and fill each compartment with potting mix and seeds of your choice. Children aren’t always blessed with patience, so produce like radishes, lettuce, basil and salad cress will all grow very quickly and begin to show results within just a few days. Create a Pinecone Bird Feeder Attract different bird species into your garden by combining mixed seeds, lard, cheese and raisins in a mixing bowl. Tie a string to a pinecone and cover it with your sticky mix, ensuring you fill all the holes. Pop in the fridge until set and hang from the different branches in your garden. Hanging some near a window can be a great way to get a close-up view of your flying friends.

Make a Fairy Garden Fairy gardens are an easy gardening activity for kids that will make their imagination run wild. Fill a wooden box, planter or trough with soil and choose a few different plants for the fairies to play around in. Some of our favourites for May and June include pansies, geraniums and hyacinths. Once this is done, encourage your children to choose a variety of mini props and accessories including marbles, pebbles, twigs, lollipop sticks and, of course, the fairies themselves. Build a Bee B&B Bees numbers are falling, so by building them a home you are both having fun gardening with your children and helping the bee populations. You can make one of these easily by cutting the top off a large plastic bottle with scissors (ensure you do this for your children). Gather some bamboo sticks and cut them to the same length as your container, then pack them tightly into your plastic bottle. Using different widths of bamboo is best, as the bees can choose between the different sizes. Attach a hook to the back of your bee house, place in full sun at least one metre off the ground, and simply watch and wait!

Be the next Picasso with Plants Create a picture with a mixture of big, medium and small edible plants with different coloured leaves, flowers or fruit. Plants like lettuce, basil, rocket, swiss chard and salads can be good for background colours of the painting. Bigger plants like chillies, tomatoes, peppers and courgettes can be good for main parts of your painting. Once you’ve picked an area with good sunlight, dig some multi-purpose compost then rake the soil so it’s nice and fine. Divide your canvas into sections using your sand. Go wild with the patterns and mark out a picture, planting different types of edible plant into the different sections of your canvas. Use contrasting colours of leaves, fruit and flowers for the different sections. Over a few weeks you should start to see your picture come to life. Grow a Pea Shoot Sarnie Why go to the supermarket when you can DIY the kids’ packed lunch? Make your own pea shoots perfect for scrumptious sandwiches and salads! Grab a container and put an even amount of multi-purpose compost. Sow the pea or micro-green seeds very thinly on the compost, covering all the soil. Keep the compost damp over the next few days then see they will start to sprout. And voilà! Snip the shoots once they’re four centimetres tall and make way for irresistible sandwiches. The best part is you can put the container back in the window, keep on watering them and they’ll grow back at least three times.
