THE ELEPHANT AND CASTLE TOWN CENTRE L AUNCH ITS OWN EDUCATIONAL WORKBOOKS FOR CHILDREN The Elephant and Castle Town Centre project team is delighted to offer its very own educational workbooks for children, created in association with education specialist iChild. The workbooks will support to re-engage children and families in learning about redevelopment and to celebrate the local community and history of Elephant and Castle. They have been designed to teach children both in the classroom and at home, and 29 local schools have already signed up to take part in the initiative, reaching over 5000 local children.

Elephant and Castle has had a rich and exciting history and has been inhabited since before the Romans. Since then it has grown and developed, and it is now about to enter a new phase in its history, with a new town centre. The subjects covered in our workbook include History, English, Geography, Art & Design, PSHE, Design & Technology and Maths. We’ve been publishing Primary Times in this area for 20 years, long may this continue. We have worked so hard this time to find out what is going on locally. We have searched far and wide for all the places that have reopened, new venues, theatres, open air theatres and everything we could think of. Banana and Raspberry Breakfast Smoothie Cup Cakes Ingredients – you will need: Makes 12 25g rolled oats 1 banana, peeled 75g raspberries 1 tbsp maple syrup 100ml milk 4 tbsp natural yoghurt 2 eggs 100ml sunflower oil 40g dried cranberries 250g self-raising flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 300g butter, softened 300g icing sugar You will also need 12 cupcake cases and a cupcake tin to sit them in, together with a piping bag & star nozzle (optional).

Method 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C, 160°C fan, gas mark 4. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases.

2 Make the smoothie by placing the oats, banana, 50g of the

raspberries, maple syrup, milk and yoghurt into a blender and blend until smooth.

3 Add the eggs and sunflower oil and blend again. 4 Place the cranberries, flour and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl and make a well in the centre. Pour in the smoothie and fold in the dry ingredients.

5 Spoon into the paper cases and bake for 18-20 minutes, until risen and golden. Cool on a cooling rack.

6 To make the icing, beat together the butter, icing sugar and remaining raspberries. Spoon into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe over the cooled cakes. If you don’t have a piping bag, spread the icing over the cakes. Always ask an adult to help when using a hot oven.

Cupcake Day 2021 The Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day is on 17 June and they would like your help. Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer and affect 1 million by 2025. The Alzheimer’s Society’s services have been used nearly 3 million times since March and have been a lifeline to thousands, but there are so many more who urgently need their help. So dust off your baking bowls, whip out your whisks and unite against dementia by signing up for Cupcake Day at www.cupcakeday.org.uk and raising some much needed funds. Each cupcake sold this Cupcake Day will help the Alzheimer’s Society reach more people through vital support services, like the Dementia Connect support line. The Wildlife Trusts are inviting everyone to see how much wildlife they can spot in just 30 minutes over breakfast on 1 June. So get up early and persuade your Mum or Dad to have an outdoor breakfast in the garden or the park before school. Start your day ‘the wild way’ with butterflies, bagels, worms, waffles, toads and toast for the Big Wild Breakfast – it’s a breakfast bio-blitz! Early morning is a great time to see wildlife as they stock up on food for the day after the night. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day for them. But this is just the start of it. The Wildlife Trusts – a movement of 46 nature charities across the UK – is asking everyone to keep life wild for the whole of June with their 30 Days Wild campaign. ZSL London Zoo is bringing children’s classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar to life starting this May Half Term, with a series of fun activities celebrating the famous picture book and its ravenous, wriggly hero.  From Saturday 29 May to Friday 16 July, visitors will be able to step inside the caterpillar’s miniature world during a packed few months of interactive family events inspired by the popular character. Children can visit a giant ‘butterfly egg’ for outdoor storytelling sessions, before meeting The Very Hungry Caterpillar himself to gather tips for tackling their very own food challenge, a journey through a supersized forest of giant fruit and veg, assault-course style, to metamorphosise into beautiful butterflies. Along the way they’ll meet The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s famous friends, The Bad-Tempered Ladybird, The Very Tiny Cricket and The Very Busy Spider. They will learn about the importance of wildlife through a series of fun activities, including seed planting in the Zoo’s new Wildlife Garden. No wannabe caterpillar’s adventure would be complete without a trip to Butterfly Paradise where young bug lovers can come wing-towing with butterflies and moths from across the globe and learn how

Your Your Wildest Wildest Adventure Adventure is is Back Back Family theme park and zoo, Chessington World of Adventures Resort has reopened with a NEW adventure for 2021 - jaw dropping new ride, Croc Drop. Dropping now, brave explorers plunge 25m on the thrilling drop tower into the giant jaws of a crocodile, Sobek, the ancient Egyptian Crocodile God and protector of the Nile, who has been possessed by evil spirits, transforming him into a cruel deity. With the once fertile River Nile lying stagnant, riders must take part in a ceremony to banish the evil spirits from Sobek, plunging into the crocodile’s soul and releasing the waters back into the Nile. Those of a minimum height of 1.2m must ‘brave the drop to release the curse’. Chessington also has seasonal events throughout the year for the entire family to enjoy. Elephant and Castle Educational Workbooks

The Elephant and Castle town centre team have launched their own educational workbooks for children. These have been created in association with education specialist iChild. The workbooks are intended to reengage children and families in learning about redevelopment and to celebrate the local community and history of Elephant and Castle. They have been designed to teach children both in the classroom and at home, and 29 local

schools have already signed up to take part in the initiative, reaching over 5000 local children. Elephant and Castle has had a rich and exciting history and has been inhabited since before the Romans. Since then it has grown and developed, and it is now about to enter a new phase in its history, with a new town centre. The subjects covered in the workbooks include History, English, Geography, Art & Design, PSHE, Design & Technology and Maths. Mental Health & Wellbeing Workshops at Polka

The Polka Theatre may be closed but that hasn’t stopped their efforts to provide educational resources and entertainment for children during the pandemic. Addressing the impact of lockdown-living on emotional and mental health, the theatre has created a series of digital Mental Health and Wellbeing workshops to be freely accessed by schools, from Reception to Year 6. Following successful in-person workshops with primary school children last autumn, Polka will now take these workshops online. The videos use drama activities to bring an interactive, practical and fun approach to talking about mental health at a young age. Using the fictional story of Mo, a boy living through lockdown during the pandemic, children will be able to explore the problems and stresses he faces, making connections with their own experiences and emotional challenges. All recordings are accompanied by activity sheets to engage learning further. With varying degrees of home-schooling having dominated the last year, Ofsted reports have shown a notable decline in children’s mental and physical stamina within the classroom. Through the digital workshops, Polka hopes to provide invaluable tools and resources to help address these problems. These filmed workshops, free to schools and the community, are part of a 10-month programme from Polka Theatre, helping children to express and understand the feelings and emotional challenges they are facing. Polka temporarily closed for a major redevelopment in February 2019 and will reopen in 2021. In the meantime, Polka continues to offer activities to schools, community groups and the public, helping to keep children creative, with a range of live, recorded and downloadable activities. Three HAB Girls Go to Oxbridge after Top A Level Results Three girls from Harris Academy Bermondsey have won places at Oxford and Cambridge universities last summer after achieving outstanding A Level results. Korede, Fatjona and Elizabeth are all the first in their families to attend university. Korede is studing philosophy at Jesus College, Cambridge, after securing 2A*s and an A. Korede said, “I couldn’t have done this without the support of the teachers. Thank you so much, I can’t believe it.” Fatjona achieved A*AA, and will be studying English at Worcester College, Oxford, while Elizabeth will be reading French and History at Brasenose College, Oxford, after also gaining A*AA. Our picture shows Elizabeth celebrating her A Level results and Oxbridge place. Principal Rebecca Iles-Smith praised the resilience of all students last year, who overcame the challenges of lockdown to continue with their studies. “So many of our students and families suffered in lockdown, but our Year 13 were the definition of resilience,” she said. “Many are the first in their family to go to university and have overcome huge challenges to achieve this highly. “They have come so far already and I feel they are ready to change the world! I cannot wait to see what else they achieve in their futures.” Harris Academy Bermondsey was rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for the third time in a row following their most recent assessment in October 2019. Ofsted inspectors judged the school to be ‘Outstanding’ overall, as well as in each of the individual categories they looked at: achievement, teaching, behaviour, and leadership and management.

Learn about Animals at Home

The RSPCA has launched a new education programme for parents to teach their children about animal welfare at home. The new programme focuses on the welfare of dogs, cats and rabbits and provides parents with information and activities they can do with their children. The programme begins by introducing the concept of compassion and outlining the animal’s needs, there are then a range of discovery activities focusing on dogs, cats and rabbits for parents and children to complete together, and the final section is advocacy which brings together their learning and encourages the family to champion animal welfare in a creative and imaginative way. This could be carrying out a litter pick, creating a wildlife friendly garden, or keeping an eye out for higher welfare labels like RSPCA Assured when shopping.

Fun Gardening Activities for Children It’s National Children’s Gardening Week from 29 May to 6 June, so it’s the perfect time to get children into gardening. Whether you have a small patio or a large lawn, gardening is a great and inexpensive way to get your little ones outside, appreciating nature and getting creative. Here are some fun ideas which we’ve put together in conjunction with Squire’s Garden Centres to get your children into gardening. Quirky Planter Creations

Turn unwanted items into perfect plant pots! You’ll be amazed at what can be recycled – old wellies, a pair of jeans, empty food tins or even plastic bottles all make fantastic planters. Then watch as your flowers bloom.

Create Crackin’ Cress Heads

Carefully remove the top of your eggs, wash the shells and dab them dry. Draw faces on your shells with felt tip pens. Dip some cotton wool in water, squeeze out the excess, and then place one cotton wool ball inside each shell. Sprinkle a few cress seeds on top. Sit your cress-filled shells in egg cups or an egg box on a sunny windowsill and watch them grow! Cress seeds are available for £1.99 at Squire’s.

Bring Bees to Your Garden

Gardens with bees mean that your flowers and fruit will be pollinated and then set seed, and most importantly produce fruit for you.To make bees welcome, why not add quiet areas in the garden for wildlife, including bees, to take over? World Bee Day is on 20 May.You could take the opportunity to make a bee hotel. Bee homes are fun to make and can be made into a pretty, as well as a useful, feature in the garden. into bees in your garden, Friends of the Earth have a Bee Saver Kit which includes a spotter guide, hints about making your garden bee friendly, bee friendly seeds and more.

Grow Your Own

Try growing tomatoes, strawberries or even a pumpkin in time for Halloween! Pumpkin seeds can be sown outdoors in May and June and are £1.99 per pack at Squire’s.

Encourage Other Wildlife into Your Garden

Add flowering plants such as lavender, foxgloves or roses which provide nectar, plant a shrub or tree for shelter, create a log pile for bugs and insects, or add a pretty ladybird tower to your garden.

Sunflowers are bright and cheery and very easy to grow. Sow seeds outdoors in May and the flowers will bloom from June to September. Sunflower seeds are available for £1.99 per pack at Squire’s. Make Your Own Miniature Terrarium

Use a clean glass or jam jar and add a layer of decorative stones and sand. Top with soil, and then add moss on top that will act as grass. Plant miniature plants or cuttings into your jar. Add a small rock, or even mini people, Lego figures, plastic dinosaurs or animals to really bring your terrarium to life!

Make Yourself a Scarecrow

You can’t always be out in the garden to keep watch over your crops. With a few old clothes, some straw and a couple of pieces of wood to make a basic cross shape you can make yourself a scarecrow to do it for you. There are lots of guides online. He or she may not frighten many birds but scarecrows are great places for the helpful bugs to hide and will look great in the garden.You could make your scarecrow’s face, scary, funny or sweet.
