Irish Winter Warmer Soup Winter is a time for woolly jumpers, mittens and sitting by the fire. It’s also a time for seeing friends and family which means lots of entertaining. ‘Happy Home’ not only contains lots of simple recipes that can feed large groups of people, it also makes the preparation a family activity. The clue is in the name. With six helpful sections - Party Together, Funky Tea Party, Do It Yourself, Gathering, Put The Extra In Ordinary and Condiments: Dips, Chutneys and Jams, you can do as much or as little as you wish, but still make something special. Of course, everything is also child friendly, so putting on a tea party can be a family event. Whilst the soup is simmering your children can be busy making ice cream garlands or adorable pastel sugar lumps (which also make great hand-made gifts!). There is even a section on how to throw events, and suggestions on how to make your food and craft makes into heart-felt gifts. Charlotte Hedeman Guéniau has taken the stress of entertaining and made it into fun and functional family time. Her Irish Winter Warmer Soup is perfect for cold nights in, but can also be made in bulk if you’re cooking for a crowd.

Ingredients 1 onion 2 clove garlic 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 large parsnips 4 carrots 1 heaped teaspoon turmeric 4 ½ cups (1 litre) vegetable stock Salt and pepper

Method 1. Finely chop the onion and garlic. Add to a saucepan heated with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stir until the onions and garlic are softened and translucent. 2. Dice the carrots and parsnips and add them to the pan, stirring well to make sure they are coated with oil. 3. Add the turmeric and season with salt to taste. Stir well again to make sure everything is covered in turmeric. 4. Cover the pan with the lid and let simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. 5. Pour in vegetable stock and simmer for another 20 to 30 minutes. 6. In a blender or food processor, process the soup until smooth. Return to pan and reheat. 7. Sprinkle with a bit of olive oil and black pepper, and serve with some brown bread or crusty white bread. Tip: Perfect on a cold day! Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and a great immune-system booster. The Happy Home’s ‘All-Around-Snack Seed Crackers’ are a perfect addition to dip into the soup. For this recipe and many more, buy the ‘Happy Home - Everyday Magic for the Family Kitchen’ book, available online from £16.99. 4

Family theatre Chester Tuffnut

Gomito Theatre have discovered a brand new type of creature: the treemole. Chester Tuffnut isn’t your ordinary treemole – in fact he is one of a kind. Chester likes wearing jumpers and sitting in his armchair, but most of all he loves adventure. The curious creatures in Woodland have gone so long without excitement they’ve forgotten how to have fun. Luckily, Chester is on hand to bring happiness and laughter back to his new Woodland friends. This new production created by Gomito and Polka Theatre for ages 2–5, is an action-packed escapade with a one-of-a-kind creature, Chester Tuffnut, based on an original character first seen at Greenwich Theatre in 2013. Mischievous Chester takes centre stage in this celebration of individuality and togetherness. Told with puppets, original music and imaginative antics, this show is full of humour, thrills, spills, near misses and great escapes. It’s a story about discovering new places and making friends, while encouraging everyone to have at least one adventure a day. You can also have your very own adventure, with the chance to stay, meet the Woodland creatures and explore their dens after the show. Moomin Adventures at Kew Gardens

Join the Moomins for a botanical adventure at Kew Gardens this Easter, from 1-17 April. With the arrival of spring, the Moomins will be coming out of hibernation and getting up to all sorts of mischief and fun. First appearing in the 1940s, the Moomins are a family of adventurous and natureloving creatures from the culturally iconic storybooks by Finnish writer and artist Tove Jansson. In the Gardens, families can expect an exciting activity-packed day out as these beloved creatures come to Kew for the first time. Explore the stunning spring landscape of Kew as you join in with the interactive Moomin trail. The botany-obsessed character of the Hemulen is distraught. Some of his favourite plants have gone missing from his prized herbarium

collection. It’s up to Kew’s young visitors to embark on a magical Moomin mission through the Gardens to get them back. The trail will culminate in a specially created Moomin Festival Camp in the wild woodland of the Conservation Area. Here, youngsters can collect their reward, get the chance to ‘meet and greet’ a real-life Moomin costumed character and get involved with the plethora of activity workshops. On Easter Sunday itself, children will be treated to some delicious Lindt chocolate treats at the gates. Explore Kew Gardens as nature comes alive in spring and entertain your children with Moomin fun this Easter. Admission to the festival is included in the general entrance ticket to the Gardens (adult - £15, child - £3.50). Go to www.kew.org for more information. Photo credit: © Moomin Characters ™

Fun Days Out this Spring

Discover wild places with the John Muir Award Discover wild places, explore what makes them wild and special, do something to care for them and share your experiences! That’s what the John Muir Award invites you to do in a spirit of fun and adventure. The John Muir Award is an environmental scheme which helps people connect with, enjoy and care for nature. Four challenges lie at the heart of the John Muir Award.

• Discover a wild place This could be school grounds, a local park, beach, woods, river, mountain or national park.

• Explore it

Do things to enjoy, find out more about and understand your wild places. Visit your chosen site at different times of day and night, in different seasons, alone or with others.

• Conserve it

Care for and love your wild place. Take some personal responsibility, make a difference, put something back.

• Share it

Tell others, share and celebrate your wild place. The award has 3 levels for you to work your way through, starting with the Discovery Award requiring a minimum of 4 days, then the Explorer Award (minimum 8 days) and finally the Conserver Award requiring a minimum of 20 days of wild experiences over 6 months. The scheme is perfect for use in upper primary schools.

Teachers can use the John Muir Award to support learning themes such as personal and health education, sustainability and citizenship or use the award to support outdoor learning of curriculum subjects. Families can get involved too. Activities that could contribute to a Family John Muir Award might include a holiday or series of family outings to wild places; outdoor hobbies such as hill walking, bird watching climbing or canoeing; volunteering for local or national conservation organisations; painting, drawing, photography, film-making, poems and stories about the great outdoors to share your experiences with others. Spring is the perfect time of year to start planning a new wild adventure and everything you need to get started can be found online at www.johnmuirtrust.org

Who was John Muir?

St Saviour’s Church of England Primary School

In 2013, St Saviour’s Church of England Primary School was asked to be one of the first schools to take part in the Mayor’s Team London Young Ambassadors pilot. Since then the children have been involved in many different charity projects and have helped thousands of people, both locally and globally. These include raising funds and donating items for orphan children and families caught up in the war in Syria, Care International and the Brixton Soup Kitchen. In December the children pitched to Unilever for a grant of £1000 to create ‘refugee welcome packs’. The judges were so impressed by the children that they were awarded nearly double the amount. The children’s packs include colouring pencils, books and a blanket and the family packs include baby items and toiletries donated by Unilever who fund the programme. The welcome packs will also contain a welcome letter in the recipients’ language and a prayer card specific to their religion. They will be given to recently arrived refugees and asylum seekers in London. In January the Deputy Mayor, Matthew Ryder visited St Saviour’s to speak to the children about their Refugee Project. The young volunteers recreated their pitch and showed Mr Ryder the ‘refugee welcome packs’. He was extremely impressed and commended the children for their outstanding voluntary contribution to the local community. In the past four years, St Saviour’s has donated over 2,000 items of toiletries, food and clothing to the community and raised over £7000. The school’s motto comes from an old African Proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.” Find out more about St Saviour’s and their charity projects at www.stsaviourslambeth. co.uk.

Changing the World, One School Meal at a Time

Mary’s Meals provides daily meals to more than 1.1 million of the world’s poorest children every day they attend school. The nutritious meals enable children to attend school and learn so they can work towards a more prosperous future. The impact of these daily meals is clear. Independently verified studies have shown that after a year of serving Mary’s Meals, school enrolment increased, attendance improved and teachers reported their pupils were more hopeful for the future. The work of Mary’s Meals began in Malawi in 2002, when the charity set up its first school feeding programme, supporting around 200 children. One of those children was Veronica, who is now studying Education and Business Studies at college. Veronica told Primary Times, “When you are hungry, you cannot be able to think. I used to go to school without food. After receiving Mary’s Meals I was active and able to listen to what the teacher say.” For young people such as Veronica, Mary’s Meals can break down barriers to education and help unlock their future.

Theatre for London Primary Schools

Deputy Mayor for London, Joanne McCartney, recently met children from Archbishop Sumner Primary School in Lambeth to experience the National Theatre’s latest production for primary schools. This spring, more than 12,000 young people will see the NT’s tour for younger audiences of Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, with these productions visiting 27 schools across the capital and playing on stage at the National Theatre and Stratford Circus. The NT is touring live theatre to schools across London with its latest production of Romeo and Juliet. The production is a modern twist on Shakespeare’s classic love story set against a vibrant urban backdrop with excitement, colour, dancing and live song. A company of eight present a contemporary celebration of Shakespeare’s masterpiece suitable for children aged 8–12yrs. Lisa Burger, Executive Director at the National Theatre told Primary Times, “It is often the logistics of bringing a whole year group to the

theatre which can be the barrier to young people accessing worldclass theatre. By helping children to see great theatre, we are seeking to inspire children’s learning and create the next generation of audiences and playmakers.” Photo credit: Ellie Kurttz

Save the Children’s Den Day Returns

Save the Children’s Den Day, an educational interactive fundraising event for schools, is returning for a third year on Friday 16 June. Den Day calls on schools to join in with a creative, fun adventure as pupils build dens together and raise money to ensure children have a safe place to sleep and play. In 2016, 600,000 children signed up to take part helping to raise funds to support Save the Children’s work helping vulnerable children across the world. Schools can sign up now at www. DenDay.org to receive fund raising kits containing everything they need to hold a fun-filled day in the summer term. The kit includes posters, stickers, den ideas and great teaching resources to link Den Day into the curriculum and school’s plans. Teaching resources are designed to fit with the KS1 and KS2 curriculum, encouraging creativity and teamwork, while pupils learn about the challenges that some children face around the world and how their fundraising will help. Schools can raise money however they like, helping pupils get sponsored for their den-building or simply asking all pupils to make a donation for taking part. There are lots of ideas in the free fundraising kit. Right now, millions of children do not have a safe place to sleep or play. Save the Children does whatever it takes to reach children caught up in conflict, fleeing war or persecution or living rough on the street. Mary’s Meals is a grassroots movement, which relies on the dedication and kindness of thousands of volunteers, fundraisers and supporters. In Malawi alone, more than 80,000 community volunteers take turns to cook and serve the meals for the children. Thanks to this cost-effective model, it costs just £13.90 to provide a child with Mary’s Meals for a whole school year. Hundreds of primary schools across the UK have chosen to join the Mary’s Meals movement and learn more about their work. An Education Officer works with primary schools to ensure teachers have the resources they need to share the Mary’s Meals story with children of all ages. Forries Education Has Arrived in Lewisham!

The society in which we live is increasingly risk averse and less tolerant of children behaving like children! Forries Education, a Forest School in Lewisham started by James Hazlerigg–Kinlay in 2015, will soon start running sessions in Blackheath. Forest School is an inspirational, child led approach to outdoor play and learning that compliments the wider context of outdoor and woodland education. This ethos of outdoor learning started in Scandinavia and is growing in popularity in the UK. It is fun and unhurried, focused on process not product. All learners are offered regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a natural environment with trees.

20

20 Mar - 14 May ‘17

Forries Education, through running curriculum, pre-school and after-school sessions, allows children space and time to play freely, reconnect with nature and the environment, learn to take risks and have their very own adventures. As one pupil, Will, said “I don’t have ADHD when I’m out in the woods.” Forries also offers birthday parties and blocks of sessions during school holidays. To find out more and to book via Bookmeup, have a look at the website www.forrieseducation.co.uk.

Croydon High Sports Clubs

As well as the highly popular Activity Camps at Croydon High Sports Club, there are some wonderful opportunities for children and their families to stay active. The club offer great value family memberships where two adults and up to 3 children can access the indoor 25-metre heated pool, floodlit tennis courts, table tennis and badminton for as little as £7.50 a week. With even better value weekend memberships available, staying fit and having fun as a family is more affordable than many people realise. At a time when obesity and the health risks of inactive lifestyles are such hot topics, Croydon High offers a safe, friendly environment for families to spend time together and enjoy the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. There are also tennis and dance courses run by the sports club plus gymnastics, netball and swimming clubs that offer children the chance to learn new skills and progress through to competitive sport and hopefully a lifelong love of sport and staying active. Have Your Design Turned into a Piece of Art by Sir Quentin Blake How do you fancy having one of your designs developed by a famous artist and displayed in a major gallery? That’s exactly what we’re offering in our great competition. Sir Quentin Blake is the artist offering this prize and it’s probably best we let him explain in his own words. “My exhibition is called The Only way To Travel, and it is about ways in which people get from one place to another. None of it is real. Some people are on huge birds or other strange creatures, but most of them are on or in unlikely vehicles, with lots of wheels, wings, propellers, and they are on the ground or in the air. Some are underwater and some even have faces. If you can create some really unlikely vehicles we can have an exhibition of them at the Jerwood Gallery and when I’ve chosen one very unbelievable one, I will do a drawing of it for my exhibition.” The winner will have the chance to meet Quentin Blake at Jerwood Gallery during his private view, with up to 6 tickets for the winner and their family. The winner’s whole class can also go to the exhibition for free at a time to suit. Six runners up will have their work displayed in Jerwood Gallery Studio and they will all receive a Jerwood Gallery Notebook signed by Quentin Blake.
