For all our new readers in Reception who haven’t seen us before, we are the FREE What’s On, Where to Go, Things to Do magazine that comes home in the Book Bag two weeks before any school holiday plus a Back to School issue in September. The Unicorn Theatre - Back on Stage

The Thames Tunnel Victorian Experience Education and museums go hand-in-hand. At the Brunel Museum, they can help your group explore Brunel’s life and legacy using original artefacts, documents, photographs, posters and film to bring history to life. Your class will have a 90 minute session with an actor in role as one of the following characters: • Isambard Kingdom Brunel • Seamus Fitzpatrick - a worker who helped build the Thames Tunnel • Sophia Brunel - Isambard’s sister who longed to be an engineer but because she was a woman never got the chance! • Marc Brunel - Isambard and Sophia’s father Your character will take you on a River Walk where you will find out about life in the area in Brunel’s day the height of the Victorian Industrial age, then into the Thames Tunnel Shaft itself where the class will enjoy an interactive performance about their character’s life and work. Then you can enjoy an activity depending upon your area of study or enjoy some time exploring the museum itself. School trips cost £215 per class. Story Seekers is a new nationwide creative literacy project for primary schools in partnership with the National Theatre. Story Seekers will set children on a mission to find, tell and share important stories for this time, culminating in the creation of their own filmed storytelling performances to share with their school community and beyond. Learn with The Elephant

The Elephant and Castle Town Centre project team are offering their very own educational workbooks for children, created in association with education specialist iChild. The workbooks will give support to re-engage children and families in learning about redevelopment, and to celebrate the local community and history of Elephant and Castle. They have been designed to teach children both in the classroom and at home. 29 Local schools have already signed up to take part in the initiative, reaching over 5000 local children. Elephant and Castle has had a rich and exciting history and has been inhabited since before the Romans. Since then it has grown and developed and it is now about to enter a new phase in its history with a new town centre. The subjects covered in the workbooks include History, English, Geography, Art & Design, PSHE, Design & Technology and Maths. Autumn Adventures Fun Days Out with the Family The Great British Beach Clean

The Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean is a week-long citizen science event, where hundreds of beach cleans take place up and down the UK. Litter data collected drives conservation work and also feeds into the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC). This year’s Great British Beach Clean will take place between Friday 17 and Sunday 26 September.

Where Does the Underground Start?

With the Circle Line looping around Central London and other lines criss-crossing the capital and reaching into the suburbs, it seems an odd question to ask where the Underground ‘starts’? However the answer is in fact Ongar! The explanation dates back to 1972 when Ongar was selected as the reference point for all distances. The station, which was then the Eastern Terminus of the Central Line, was chosen because it was far away enough from all the other stations to ensure that no ‘negative’ distances were recorded on account of the special way that lines running south of the Central Line were measured. The station is now part of the Epping Ongar Railway. The Railway runs regular heritage steam and bus services on weekends. From 9-11 October the Railway will transform its stations to resemble Underground stops and bring in some special ‘London Transport’ vehicles. If your children love the tube, then they will love this day out – or indeed any day out on this very special steam railway. Remember to look out for the special 0.0Km post at Ongar!

On every clean the MCS ask people to run a litter survey recording all the items of rubbish they find in a 100m stretch. They use this data to campaign for real change. The MCS have seen some great results. Data has been used to make a positive impact on our ocean - including the introduction of the plastic bag charge, banning microplastics in personal care products, better wet wipe labelling and supporting a tax on single-use plastic items. But there is still so much to do to stop the litter plaguing our beaches. Lions Take to the Streets of London

The Tusk Lion Trail has hit the streets of London and other cities around the world, celebrating the magnificence of lions and raising awareness of threats facing the iconic King of Beasts. African lions are facing greater threats to their survival than ever before. With the continent’s entire population estimated to have declined by as much as 50% in the last three decades alone, there are now fewer wild lions remaining than rhinos. The trail of full size lion statues is dotted around the capital’s streets. They have been decorated by a star-studded line-up of artists from across the worlds of design, film, music, sport, theatre and comedy, each crafting their own unique pieces. St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School is celebrating another fantastic set of A Level and GCSE results. Amongst the extraordinary grades students achieved, Saschay Ducran-Grant and Keziah Whittlesea both scored A*A*A*, Laura Colin and Charlotte Martin who both got A*A*A and Deborah Esan who achieved A*AA. Deborah is going on to study Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at Cambridge University. Students at Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich have been on a journey of self-discovery through a special programme run by the organisation Strengthening Minds. The programme, set up six years ago by former teacher Steve Daniels, encourages boys to explore what makes them feel strong and powerful, how to express themselves confidently and how to take responsibility for their own actions. During ten sessions, the boys explore how they respond in different situations – covering topics such as how to identify success, the advantages of a positive mindset, self-motivation and why we all sometimes need to step outside of our comfort zones. They explore mindfulness and meditation too, and even look at body language. Every session has practical challenges, designed to encourage boys to reflect on how they manage their emotions in different ways. Our picture shows boys learning more about themselves by working on practical challenges together. “This is the start of something new,” said Tristen,Year 9. “The programme has changed how I look at life in a positive way. I don’t get annoyed as easily now and am more confident.” Max,Year 9, says he can now focus better and “listen to people for a long time. I think my mum has seen I have been more positive.” Although the programme has now finished for these boys, Steve Daniels stresses that the end of the programme is really just the start of the boys’ journey, as they take away what they have learned and apply it across their school and home lives. Bullying Videos from The Diana Award

As over 10 million children head back to school in September, new research, commissioned by youth charity, The Diana Award, has asked young people and their parents about their experiences of bullying and the impact the events of the last year has had on their lives and social development. The survey covers a broad range of topics including how many young people and parents have experienced bullying and the impact this has had on their lives and their concerns about returning to school, cultural movements and news stories in the last year, and how this might have influenced young people. For example, the rise in conversation and news coverage around inclusivity, diversity, racism and sexism; How Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns may have impacted social development in children and young people. A host of celebrities including children’s TV presenters, sports people, actors, models and many others have filmed videos discussing their personal experiences of being bullied at school aimed at supporting today’s pupils. Cultural Capital at Trinity Academy

At Trinity Academy they aim to expand their pupils’ horizons and aspirations. In following the Future Academies Curriculum, pupils encounter “the best that has been thought and said”. An historical perspective gives pupils the tools to make sense of the world today. Trinity’s bespoke Beowulf textbook, for example, immerses pupils in the world of Anglo-Saxon culture and its antecedent migration history from Scandinavia. Learning about the historical and cultural context of this hierarchical society brings the literature to life. The textbook richly illustrates all the important background information so that pupils can make sense of how people thought and acted over 1000 years ago. Translating Anglo-Saxon Old English into Modern English builds vocabulary and fluency. Likewise, studying Latin from Year 7 through Key Stage 3 enables pupils to see that languages follow a set of rules that can be committed to memory. Knowing grammar terms, such as the difference between the nominative and accusative noun cases, shows pupils who is doing the action to whom and this gives them the confidence to master other challenging materials and concepts across a range of subjects. Trinity’s Future Academies Latin textbooks also build vocabulary and historical perspectives as pupils explore Roman civilisation through aspects of daily life across society. They will look at family, education, fables, and Roman entertainments such as theatre, games and, of course, gladiators. Winners of The UK’s oldest book awards The winners of this year’s CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals, the UK’s oldest book awards for children and young people, have been announced. The Medals celebrate outstanding achievement in children’s writing and illustration respectively and are unique in being judged by librarians. This year, both winning books explore urban landscapes through a child’s eyes. Wellbeing Garden Takes Shape at Harris Bermondsey

Students, parents and staff are working together to create a new Wellbeing Garden at Harris Academy Bermondsey. The garden will contain a wellbeing area, a greenhouse and a performance area too. But first the ground needed to be cleared, which was done by a fantastic team of volunteers during three Big Dig sessions last term. The first day of the Big Dig took place in May, with staff, parents and pupils past and present mucking in to get the ground ready for planting. “Despite 47mph winds and drizzle, the willing volunteers worked for four hours to demolish the overgrown site, trim back the buddleia and banish the brambles,” Hellen Hay of Harris Academy Bermondsey told Primary Times. Fortunately, the weather improved for the other two sessions, and the school has made a great start preparing the ground. “But there is still work ahead so we will arrange a few more preparation sessions and then in September the planting can begin,” added Dr Hay. Our picture shows Julia, Savannah and Jasmine,Year 6 girls who are joining the academy in September, working on getting the garden ready. They were also joined by Julia’s younger sister (second left), a future student too! A group of HAB girls has secured £1,500 from the Lord Mayor of London’s City Pitch fund to create a garden and performance space with the school’s Friends of HAB group raising additional funding too.

Local Student reaches Olympic Diving Final

Huge congratulations to Harris Academy Bermondsey student Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix who competed in the 10m platform diving final at the Tokyo Olympics. She did a fantastic performance and, placed seventh, she is now a top-10 finisher in her debut Olympics. This is made even more impressive as Andrea has combined training for the Olympics with studying for her GCSE exams. Speaking to the BBC about juggling training with schoolwork, Andrea said, “I’m so happy that my school is so supportive. They let me go to competitions and camps and they support me so much. They give me so much material, so much revision. My school has made it so easy for me, so I haven’t had any problems.” Many congratulations to Andrea.

Girls Represent UK at Climate Conference

A group of students from Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich have represented the UK at a recent climate change conference involving 17 secondary schools. The Harris Federation Climate Change Conference focussed on to what extent countries are meeting, or not meeting, their climate change targets. Each school represented a different country, with six students from Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich representing the UK. The girls spent five weeks prior to the event attending one-hour preparation sessions to research the UK’s greenhouse gas emission targets, for example, and what the UK is doing to support countries most affected by climate change. Shri, in Year 9, told Primary Times, “It was good to meet and debate with other schools, in the same way that countries meet and debate with each other in the United Nations. I felt empowered to take action at school.” The girls debated with China, questioning them on their use of coalbased energy. They also debated with Saudi Arabia on their economic reliance on oil, as well as with Bangladesh and the Marshall Islands who argued the UK needed to do more to support vulnerable nations. As a result of the Climate Change Conference, students are now working on their own ideas about how to raise awareness of climate change in school. Nowa from Year 9 told us, “I feel much more informed and aware about climate change and want to make a difference in my home.” The conference anticipated the COP26 conference on climate change, which takes place in Glasgow in November.

Just One Tree Day

There is still time for schools to join hundreds of others and sign-up to the highly popular Just One Tree Day, taking place on Friday 15 October. Schools throughout the UK and around the globe have already committed to participating in this international non-uniform day that encourages children to bring in £1 to plant a tree and help reforest the planet - a tree is planted for every £1 raised. Over 150,000 children from eight countries have joined together since Just One Tree Day first launched in 2019. The day highlights to children and young people how their individual actions can make a difference in the fight against climate change and the biodiversity crises. The event is open to both primary and secondary schools - those taking part can access lesson resources that fit in with the national curriculum. As part of their fundraising activities, children learn about photosynthesis, the benefits of trees for both people and wildlife and the vital role they play in reducing the impacts of climate change. The money raised is used to plant the ‘right trees in the right place’, supporting reforestation projects in Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal and Zambia, including mangrove forests and kelp regeneration. Academy (LYLA) – a Saturday school that will teach transformative life skills, including leadership, teamwork, presentation skills and CV building. Young people will be invited to enrol for the scheme, which will take place on Saturday mornings, through their school or other networks connected to the programme. Last month schools across Lewisham led the way in tackling race inequalities in education by signing a pledge on Windrush Day. The pledge commits schools to work towards a number of targets, including reducing exclusions for Black Caribbean and dual heritage pupils, targeting ambitious outcomes for these and other minority ethnic groups, developing stronger relationships with parents and carers and improving Black representation in school leadership and governing bodies. The council has committed to tackling race inequality in Lewisham schools, which also includes workshops and teacher training on unconscious bias and modernising the curriculum, Black leadership and governor support. Nicholas Hewlett, Head of St Dunstan’s College told Primary Times, “This project has enormous potential for growth and development, and we look forward to trailblazing how private schools can have genuine educational impact on the broader community in which they are based and particularly for minority groups who are in particular need of targeted support.”

One day in August The Guardian reported that as many as half the skateboarders at Brixton skatepark were female.
