School’s Out for Summer - yes that time has finally arrived - the beginning of the long summer holidays. No more crazy mornings with the stress of getting up, dressed and off to school without being late (in my house certainly...), just long sunny, relaxing days hopefully! Dingile has been searching for listings to make this the best ever guide for what to do this summer holiday. Many of the listings are FREE or low cost so do read through them and mark up the ones you want to go to. Our listings are prepared a long time in advance so to make sure you have the latest details do contact the event nearer the time to make sure they haven’t changed. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 2 September. As we are distributed through primary schools this means that this magazine is the last one that our Year 6 readers will receive. We wish you the very best of luck in going to secondary school. Thank you for taking our magazines home, entering our competitions, sending us artwork and all the lovely comments you send us. We will miss you.

Albion Primary School in China

Eight pupils from Albion Primary School, Rotherhithe, accompanied by three members of staff, spent a week in three primary schools in the Hangzhou area of China at the end of March. The children were immersed in a different culture in school, with families and in the wider community experiencing World Heritage Sites. Albion Headteacher – Mr Karl Bardouille told Primary Times, “My vision is that every pupil regardless of their background has great potential to be a future global citizen. Albion’s relationship with China, has highlighted similarities in our values and created opportunities for our pupils to visualise their futures beyond geographical barriers.” Whilst in China Albion pupils learned fencing which is not an everyday pursuit in a state primary school in England - and revelled in the opportunity to compete in the physical exercise of skipping, football and running. They enjoyed attempting traditional calligraphy skills with ink and brushes and were impressed with the readily accessible technology seen in the abundance of 3D printers, broadcasting studios, operating drones and use of digital photography. Mr Bardouille – an award winning teacher – also led English classes for Chinese students with Albion pupils taking a leading role. Students experienced a Maths lesson and noticed the similarities in approach. The hospitality experienced was fantastic with students not only eating with families but learning how to prepare dishes such as dumplings and wrapping rice and pork in bamboo leaves before steaming. Venturing West, Albion has also created a relationship with a school in Boston, USA in the wake of the anniversary of the journey of the Mayflower. There will be an all-day festival with lots of family and children’s activities at the start site too. So go along and support your adult and junior triathletes. All funds raised will go to your choice of Guy’s & St Thomas’, Evelina London Children’s Hospital or Guy’s Cancer. Find out more at www.supportgstt.org.uk/get-involved.

The setting is unique in that, apart from offering the early years foundation stage (EYFS), they offer an accelerated programme. With the accelerated programme, based on the child’s ability they are taught for part of the day in a more structured fashion preparing academically to start reception. StarApple Child Care deliver the Early Years curriculum through heuristic play, stories, music and movement, literacy and numeracy skills, water and sand, treasure baskets etc. Adult-led activities include baby/toddler yoga, baby massage, swimming, Spanish, gymnastics, computer science, science, arts and craft, sign language and drama. StarApple Child Care are extremely passionate about education and also offer an alternative to mainstream education. This is aimed at families whose child may feel mainstream education is moving too fast for them as they may be suffering from a disability, anxiety, depression or just for those who feel they learn best in a smaller more nurturing environment.

The show introduces the Diamond Brothers Detective Agency. Tim is the world’s worst private investigator, so can the help of his clever younger brother Nick be enough to crack their toughest case yet? A solitary box of Maltesers is delivered by a miniature Mexican, but what’s so special about these chocolates that half of London’s criminal underworld are willing to kill for them? The show’s creators Feargus Woods Dunlop and Heather Westwell, told Primary Times, “We are so incredibly excited to be presenting The Falcon’s Malteser by Anthony Horowitz once again. We love this show, it was a real turning point for us as a company, and audiences really responded to what we did with Anthony’s already very funny book. We are also thrilled to be working with producer James Seabright to bring this much-loved show to London audiences.” The Falcon’s Malteser will run at The Vaults Theatre from 17 July – 25 August and is suitable for ages 8 and above. Expect slapstick, comedy songs, a cast of four playing dozens of characters and a fully-realised car chase on stage. For more information, please visit www.newoldfriends.co.uk.

Dennis & Gnasher: Unleashed! The Musical

This summer, get set for an awfully big adventure as the National Theatre’s “unforgettable and delightful” (Guardian) retelling of JM Barrie’s classic tale takes flight at Troubadour White City Theatre, a brand-new theatre in West London, only minutes away from Westfield.

Children who enjoy the CBBC show and Mums and Dads who remember the comics are all going to be excited to hear that Beano Studios and Selladoor Theatre Company are creating a family musical based on the TV show. The family-friendly show will launch in 2020 on a year-long tour of 40+ theatres and venues across the UK and Ireland. It is due to feature Dennis and Gnasher’s hallmark slapstick comedy and ageless humour delivered with a repertoire of songs.

When leader of the Lost Boys, Peter Pan, loses his shadow during a visit to London, headstrong Wendy helps him re-attach it. In return she is invited to Neverland, where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await. Bursting with magic, mischief, music and makebelieve, Sally Cookson’s wondrously inventive Peter Pan is a funny and moving version of a much-loved story for audiences of all ages and is playing for a limited season from 20 July.

Together they cook up crazy plans, get in all sorts of scrapes and take on every challenge, no matter how big. Keep your eyes peeled for Dennis and the gang hitting a theatre near you.

International Bat Night

International Bat Night is a popular annual event to draw public awareness to threatened bat populations across the world. Bat Night takes place in more than 30 countries on the last full weekend of August. This year, International Bat Night is on 24 and 25 August. Bats are mammals, and in fact they are the only mammals that can fly. Like other mammals, they have hair or fur on their bodies and are warm-blooded. In the UK, there are 17 different types of bats. Many people think bats are blind, but in fact they can see almost as well as humans. However, at night, their ears are more important than their eyes - they use a special sonar system called ‘echolocation,’ meaning 16

1 July - 1 Sept ‘19

they find things using echoes. Why not see and hear bats in their natural environment by taking part in a range of events organised by local bat groups, wildlife trusts, countryside rangers and other organisations across the country? In your local area, be sure to find a bat walk over the holidays. They often take place at dusk. School’s Out for Summer...

Jousting at Hever Castle

BBC wildlife’s Wild Cities presenter, Hannah Stitfall,

inspires us to... become a wildlife filmmaker this summer You’re never too young to tell animal stories and cherish the wildlife you encounter. That’s the message from passionate wildlife content creator for BBC Earth, Springwatch and Wild Cities, Hannah Stitfall. From whales leaping out of the waves at close quarters to plastic pollution on our beaches, mobile phone footage shared online is an incredibly powerful tool in defence of the natural world. Why not film some of the wildlife you experience on the school run or beyond and make it the star of the show? “It is very easy to get down about the state of our planet,” said Hannah, a wildlife presenter who has worked alongside some of the world’s best naturalists and conservationists, has filmed around the world and worked on BBC Spring, Autumn and Winterwatch, “but the tide is slowly turning – and that is thanks to passionate individuals like the people reading this. “Whether it is through public speaking, TV, nature writing or simply through their own social media channels, the conservation movement happening right now is something we should all be proud of and is incredibly exciting! We can make a difference and already are, but only if we don’t give up.” Sir David Attenborough’s BBC show Wildlife on One was a must-see for a young Hannah who rushed home after school dance class to tune in. The filmmaker’s love of wildlife started very early, at playschool, where she pretended to be a flamingo and went on to develop an obsession with foxes. Hannah is encouraging families to try making

their own wildlife films from their mobile phones. “Find something you’re passionate about and go film it – that could be anything from a house martin to a mayfly nymph – every single species has a story and why shouldn’t it be you who tells it? As mentioned earlier – if you only reach one person then they tell another person – that’s more people that now know about that species story. Hannah’s new four-part BBC Earth series filmed in South Africa is coming out later this year. She believes sharing stories about our natural world and the species we share our planet with is now one of the most important jobs on the planet. “I see it almost as a domino effect when I’m working on a BBC production or making my own content – if I reach just one person, they will then tell or share the content with another person, then another person and another, which in turn hopefully reaches a huge audience. If every single one of us managed to change just one person’s mind about protecting our wildlife or hooked them into caring about nature then I truly believe our work as wildlife communicators would be done – and that is why it matters so much to me.” Hannah will be at RSPB Birdfair, which runs from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 August in Rutland, and addresses some of the big issues of the day, including climate change and wildlife decline. For tickets and news visit: www.birdfair.org.uk, @ TheBirdfair and Like Birdfair on Facebook.

The Knights of Royal England will be entertaining the crowds once more for the annual Jousting tournaments. The annual Summer Jousting Tournaments will begin at Hever Castle on 13 and 14 July. The Knights of Royal England will be entertaining the crowds with exhilarating displays of action, stunts, falls and fights in an authentic arena complete with a Royal Box. Join Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and the Knights of Royal England in the procession to the Jousting arena. Battling it out in the saddle and on foot in one-to-one combat, the valiant knights will then compete for points to find this season’s ultimate champion. Surrounded by award-winning gardens and dating back to the 13th century, historic Hever Castle provides a picturesque setting for a fantastic day of jousting. Bring a blanket or watch the joust in style from the medieval spectator stands, available on the day for a small cost on a first-come, first-served basis. Then choose which knights you support and cheer them to glory. Jousting tournaments take place throughout the summer at Hever Castle on 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28 July, 10, 11, 17, 18 and 23 – 26 August. For more information, please visit www.hevercastle.co.uk. St Dunstan’s College

Girls and boys join St Dunstan’s College Senior School from a large number of preparatory and primary schools across south-east London and beyond. Moving from junior school to senior school is a major milestone in a child’s life. Parents and children alike may feel nervous about the transition -- so many new people to meet, new buildings to navigate and new subjects to delve into. It can seem overwhelming. However, St Dunstan’s relatively small size allows for new students to settle in very quickly. They are helped along the way by running a New Joiners’ Induction Day at the beginning of each Michaelmas Term during which the College is open only to new students. During the Induction Day, students get to know their form tutors, subject teachers and classmates as well as how to find their classes and College facilities. With small class sizes, excellent pastoral support and plenty of friendly and helpful returning students, children quickly make friends and find their way around the school. In August 2018, St Dunstan’s College celebrated excellent GSCE grades. 82% of grades were A* - B, with over 60% being A*- A. The school has also recently added an additional bus route serving the Blackheath area. St Dunstan’s College’s open events take place from September to November, with the first Senior School (11+, 13+) open morning on Saturday 28 September and Sixth Form (16+) open evening on Wednesday 9 October. St Joseph’s College has been recognised nationally for its excellent results in 2018 based on data from the Department for Education and Ofsted, analysed by SSAT, the Schools, Students and Teachers network. St Joseph’s College was found to be among the best performing secondary schools in the country, receiving an award for being in the top 20% of non-selective schools nationally for attainment. The SSAT Educational Outcomes database compares all state-funded schools in England and the highest performing schools for a range of key measures are awarded SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards. St Joseph’s College will be presented with their award during the summer term at a ceremony attended by winners from across the region. Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of SSAT told Primary Times, “I am delighted that St Joseph’s College has won an Educational Outcomes Award for attainment. This recognises one important aspect of the school’s work but at SSAT we believe an outstanding school has deep social justice at the heart of its plan. It subjects that plan to constant challenge and innovation and it liberates teachers to perform brilliantly in the classroom. SSAT is pleased to recognise the quality of leadership and the hard work of all staff to ensure the success of every child. A big thank you and well done to students, parents, staff and governors.”

Prendergast Vale School

Prendergast Vale School is a school for boys and girls aged from 3 to 16 which aims to put children on the pathway to university and successful careers in the modern world. The secondary curriculum from Year 7 offers every pupil the opportunity to study academic subjects such as computer science as well as a range of creative and practical subjects. Ofsted described the leaders of the school as having “a strong vision for the curriculum”, saying about the school, “It prepares pupils well for life-long learning. Budding Entrepreneurs at Borough Market

Borough Market will be hosting over 50 budding stall holders from 11 London primary schools at its annual Summer Produce Sale on Thursday 4 July from 11am–1.30pm in partnership with campaigning charity School Food Matters. Children from the local community will become market traders for the day, using their enterprise skills to sell school-grown fruit and vegetables in the glass-fronted Market Hall. All the proceeds will be donated to FareShare, an award-winning charity which seeks to relieve food poverty by rescuing good food that would otherwise go to waste. Every £1 raised will provide four meals for vulnerable families across the capital. To date, the ‘Young Marketeers’ programme has seen more than 7,000 primary school children growing produce in 58 different schools, with close to 800 students coming to sell 45 different varieties of fruit and vegetables at London’s 1,000 year old market.

The tiny traders will kick off proceedings in traditional style by ringing Borough Market’s iconic bell to start their sales. This is the culmination of an annual programme which starts at Borough Market in the spring, when former Blue Peter Gardener, Chris Collins, teaches the children the art of growing fruit and veg from seed. They visit various market traders to learn top tips on how to run a winning market stall - from marketing, to food hygiene, to customer service. In June, primary schools receive a visit from a skilled horticulturist and receive further tips on how to ensure a bumper crop.

Bookmark Volunteer Reading Programme

Literacy charity, Bookmark Reading, is looking to partner with London primary schools that want help in providing reading support to children in Years 1 to 3. Bookmark matches schools with vetted and trained volunteers from the local community, through their easy-to-use digital platform. The reading programme is designed to improve children’s literacy and enjoyment of reading in the early years, when it can have the greatest impact on their future progress. The charity’s six-week reading programme provides children with two, 30-minute face-toface reading sessions each week with a volunteer, at the cost of just £1 per session (£12 per programme) for the school. Schools have the flexibility to decide how long children stay on the programme, with the option to extend to twelve weeks or more. The charity also offers five complimentary reading programmes to each school that signs up. The sessions are designed to support the reading schemes that teachers use in the classroom, as well as encourage reading for pleasure through literacy games and activities. Sessions are booked through Bookmark’s digital platform, meaning that schools simply need to choose dates and times that suit their timetable. The charity is currently recruiting schools in London for programmes starting in September 2019 and will be rolling the scheme out nationwide in 2020. Schools wishing to register their interest, or those who are interested in volunteering with Bookmark, should visit www.bookmarkreading.org.

The school is proud of the outstanding academic progress students make but the school’s nurturing ethos and wide range of extracurricular activities also contribute to their success. In recent years, girls have won international enterprise competitions in Brussels and New York, gained Duke of Edinburgh’s awards, sung at the Royal Albert Hall, taken part in public speaking challenges and competed in cheerleading contests. Amanda Compton, Norbury Manor’s Headteacher, believes providing students with a firm foundation to do well not only academically but in all areas of life is key. She told Primary Times, “The opportunities we offer encourage students to develop a strong sense of self-worth. We want them to become articulate young adults who consider themselves responsible global citizens. Our curriculum is forward-looking and we have a reputation for offering a genuinely comprehensive education in an environment that is caring, happy, safe and inclusive. Faiths, beliefs and traditions are respected and we work hard to establish positive working partnerships with our parents. To be ranked in the top 17% of schools nationally is something we are all extremely proud of, but the really important thing for us is that the students are performing so well.” Norbury Manor is now taking admissions applications for September 2020. For more information, please visit www.nmbec. org.uk

Conisborough College

At Conisborough College, we develop young people who are proud of themselves and want to make a positive contribution to their community. We are committed to providing an excellent standard of education with every possible opportunity for our young people to thrive. We are constantly looking for new ways to involve parents and carers in their children’s education. We ensure the school is offering an educational experience that is both engaging and rewarding and we believe that achievement in all areas of school life should be rewarded and celebrated. Our wide range of enrichment activities ensures our students are fully engaged both inside and outside of the classroom. We have a fully established partnership with Colfe’s who work with us on a range of projects. In addition our highest achieving students can secure scholarships to the sixth form at Colfe’s. We’re looking forward to meeting our potential parents and students.”

New App Takes Girls to Technology Final

Five Harris Academy Bermondsey students have come up with a new device that allows people to keep track of their personal belongings such as headphones and bags. The Patch and Track app is a small and discrete disc containing a location sensor which can be applied to any personal item.Your belongings can then be tracked using an app on a device such as a phone or laptop so if you lose something in the park, street or even at home, it will be easy to find it. The idea is so good that judges chose it as a finalist in the Apps for Good competition which supports students to make mobile apps, Internet of Things devices and machine learning models to solve problems that matter to them. The students have now designed a prototype that will be 3D printed before being programmed and are now working on an app to connect everything together. On the day of the final, the girls will refine their pitch with the support of industry experts at digital agency TH_NK, before presenting to a panel of judges at Code Node, Skills Matter in Finsbury Circus. Our picture shows Gabrielle, Heyaballe, Taiwo, Nasifah and Amara, all aged 14, who have made it to the Apps for Good competition final. Visit www.harrisbermondsey.org.uk to see how the girls got on at the final, and for all the latest news from Harris Academy Bermondsey.

Student Zine Out Now

Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich now has its own student zine, written and created by girls with the help of their teachers. Called,Voices from the Rye, the first issue has the theme of ‘change’ and includes articles on the Black Lives Matter movement, pollution in London, why girls participate less in sport, race, and the conundrum facing the gentrification of Peckham. Why not download your copy at www.harrisdulwichgirls.org.uk? “It all started when two teachers, Ms Caswell and Mr Stothard, had a vision of starting our own school magazine to let us raise our voices about the things that matter to us as young women,” said lead editor Awa,Year 10. Both staff and students have been impressed with the quality of the output from the writers, who spend one lunchtime a week creating the zine. Designed by graphic designer, Jessica Williams, issue two is now in the pipeline on the theme of ‘spirit’. It will cover, for example, the spirit of our childhood, ideas related to religious and cultural spirits, and the spirit that we might possess inside us that shapes our identity. Ms Caswell told Primary Times, “The zine is there to give our students the opportunity to lead, make decisions and write about the things that matter to them. Other students have now started to write too, which is a real testament to the zine, because they see it as an opportunity to speak up and feel proud.” Download Voices from the Rye at www.harrisdulwichgirls.org.uk.

Leeds Castle in Kent are celebrating their 900th anniversary this year. More than 700 children from across the country entered incredible stories for their ‘Big 900 Story Writing Challenge’ on the themes of ‘Castles’ and ‘Time Travel’. Local pupil, Theo Nyland was announced as the winner of the younger age category, 5-9 years. His prize included tickets for the Leeds Castle Fireworks Spectacular, a family stay at the Knight’s Glamping and a private tour of the Castle as well as a hamper of goodies. The winners’ stories are available online and will also be buried in the Leeds Castle time capsule. We loved Theo’s story so much, we thought we’d print it so you could all read it.

Thomas’ Time Travelling Adventure One day my family were having a family trip at Leeds Castle. As usual mum had stopped to read one of the ‘interesting’ information panels: 29th June 1930 I am preparing for Lady Baillie’s great party tonight and already the Housekeeper is unhappy with my work. I fear that I might lose my position in the house if I cannot complete my tasks and raise a smile on the Mistress’ face. What will I tell mum if I return home with no job? I feel desperately sad. Maggie The guide managed to pull mum away and finish the tour, but she made a promise to come back to find out what happened to poor Maggie. Just as the castle was about to close down, my mum noticed she had lost her purse. She told me to run and get it, so swiftly I ran through every room checking. When I got to the library, I saw her purse on the window sill but I was distracted by the beautiful clock by the mantelpiece. I stared at it but I realised this was a mistake because both clock hands were spinning anti clock-wise so fast it was a blur. There seemed to be a blue whirlpool and I was about to be sucked up like water in a plug hole. I tried running but it was no use, I was being sucked into it. The next thing I knew I was back in the library. This was not normal. There were maids walking around and servants carrying plates and flowers. One certain maid tripped over my foot. Still uncertain about what was happening, I helped her up and apologised. “The Housekeeper Mrs Jones is going to be really cross with me. I’m so behind with my tasks”, she moaned mournfully. “I can help you”, I suggested. I looked at the girl in front of me, she was wearing a small white hat, a white apron, black dress with long sleeves and black shoes. Her hands were red and sore from all the work she did. “My name is Thomas”, I said. “What’s your name?” and I asked her what she needed to do… “My name is Maggie. Well here are the rules of the castle, you’ll need them. You must stay out of sight of the family. If you are working upstairs and you hear someone coming, disappear. Don’t walk in the garden unless you’re sure everyone in the family is out. No singing, no whistling or talking where the family can hear you. Don’t speak until you’re spoken to and use as few words as you can when you answer. If you’re in the room when the family are having a conversation, pretend you are not listening. If someone tells a joke, keep a straight face and act like a piece of furniture.” I started with lighting the fire in the kitchen and washing the grubby plates and dishes. I was already exhausted. Maggie had

said that Lady Baillie’s special brooch had gone missing and I should try to find it. I looked around for an hour but it was nowhere to be seen, so I carried on with my jobs. I had to clean the rest of the utensils in the kitchen and pick, wash and trim the fruit and vegetables. I also had to clean the rest of the house which was taking all day. One of my last jobs was to dust the carpets. As I was dusting, I noticed something shiny under the carpet. It was a brooch made of gold & platinum, encrusted with beautiful jewels and pearls. Very glamourous. I thought of showing it to Maggie, so I went to get her. Just then Maggie bumped into me and I showed her the brooch. She seemed so shocked I couldn’t see her move a muscle. After a while she said it was actually Lady Baillie’s long-lost brooch and if someone found it there would be high rewards. She told me to hand it in to Lady Baillie, but I pleaded with her to do it. Maggie marched off joyfully in the direction of Lady Baillie’s bedroom. I went back to the library because my last job was to clean the book shelves. I saw the same clock as before and studied it again, wishing I could get back to my own time as I was missing my mum. Just then, the hands of the clock started whizzing clockwise and the same blue whirlpool appeared. The next thing I knew, I was back in the library grabbing mum’s purse. I ran back to her. She was back at the board with Maggie’s diary studying the words. It must have been very interesting I thought. She was muttering to herself that a young boy, named Thomas had helped the maid. “Same name as yours Thomas! Listen to this…” 30th June 1930 I can’t believe it! My job is safe and it’s all down to my special friend Thomas. Not only did he help me with all of my tasks, he also found Lady Baillie’s brooch for me. My reward was to be promoted to the kitchens and I am allowed a week off to spend with my mum. I wish I could say thank you to Thomas. Mum said that Thomas must have been a lovely boy. “The best!” I said. Photo credits: Leeds Castle Foundation.
