The Best Family Guide to What’s On
An Interview with Holly Smale by Hannah Draisey I enjoyed the facts Holly Smale, writer of the popular teenage novel series Geek Girl, you was recently interviewed by young journalist Hannah Draisey about her books and her inspiration for the series. Hannah conducted the included interview by phone as part of the BBC School Report project when she in Geek was a patient attending the Evelina Children’s Hospital’s own school in Girl. What South London. Hannah has kindly let us publish her interview. interests What made you want to write Geek Girl? you in I wanted to be a writer since I was four but didn’t know what to write about. facts like I was 29 when I decided to write a story about my past. these?
Getting to Know Geek Girl
How long does it take you to write a book? Each of my books took a different amount of time to write. The first Geek Girl book took three years to write because I was working full time and writing at the weekends. The second book took a year as I didn’t have to work and had more experience. The books I write now take six to nine months each.
Where do you get your inspiration? I get inspiration from everything. I listen to conversations, I pay attention to how people walk and dress, I am incredibly nosey. I use experiences from my own life, if I overhear something funny or interesting I might include it in my books.
Which books did you enjoy reading when you were growing up? When I was very little, I read the Faraway Tree series. When I got a bit older, I read The Borrowers and Anne of Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables helped me when I was going through a difficult time.
Which books have you enjoyed reading recently? I’ve just finished reading the Game of Thrones books. It’s the first time I’ve read a fantasy novel. I’ve enjoyed the difference in genre. As a writer it’s important to read different types of books. You can sometimes get stuck reading just one genre.
Do you ever read your own books? Yes, I don’t read them for pleasure because I know them so well and I know what made me write the books. Because it’s a series, when starting to write the next book I go back and read all the books before that again. I remind myself what’s going on and the type of tempo the story is paced at.
I was a lot like Harriet (Geek Girl character) when I was younger and still am now. Facts are a different way of seeing the world and facts are Harriet’s narrative voice. It is also a way of showing Harriet’s personality and character.
Are any of the characters in Geek Girl based on real people? No character is the same as a person in real life, most of them are fictional however a couple are very similar to people I know. Harriet’s dad for example is very similar to my own dad. Harriet was very similar to me as a teenager. Some of the characters are based on a mix of different people I’ve met.
To finish, Hannah also asked Holly some questions about herself. What advice would you give your teenage self? I’d tell her to be brave. When I was younger, I blamed myself for things that happened; I’d go back and give myself a hug.
What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? What a good question. Salted caramel ice cream and Turkish delight ice cream, which is very hard to find. Basically anything, I love ice cream!
Holly Smale’s first published book, Geek Girl, won the 2014 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and she’s gone from strength to strength ever since. There are six books in the Geek Girl series, all published in paperback by Harper Collins and are available in High Street and online bookshops. 2

Help your child excel at anything they put their mind to! The first childrenʼs book from Times journalist and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed will inspire and empower young readers to find the confidence to realise their potential. ʻI loved seeing my daughter race through this book and become inspired to be the best version of her that she could be and work smarter, not harder. It is for any child who might be feeling that everyone is getting places except them, and challenges the thing that holds you back (mostly your own insecurities). My daughter cannot wait to take it into school and share it with her classmatesʼ RACHEL, PARENT REVIEWER

Chrysalis Care Chrysalis Care Independent Fostering Agency is recruiting foster carers. Are you ready for an adventure?
Kew Gardens’ Temperate House Re-opens Kew Gardens has been undertaking one of the largest restoration projects in its entire history and opened the doors of its spectacular Temperate House on 5 May revealing 10,000 breathtaking plants. Entering the glasshouse, visitors can embark on a round-the-world adventure, seeing sites including the Dombeya mauritiana, a tree that was thought to be extinct in the wild until Kew’s renowned Carlos Magdalena found one growing in the Mauritian highlands. After many trials and tribulations (including forming a human ladder to reach the lowest branch), Carlos was able to gather and return with cuttings, and Kew is now the only place in the world with this tree in cultivation. There are lots of activities guests can take part in during their visit. Families can explore the Temperate House with conservation giant ‘Gnomus’, a larger-than-life puppet who will take them on a story-led walking tour, highlighting the most interesting tales around the vital importance of plants. Tours will take place 26 May to 3 June, and 21 July to 2 September. Fifteen minute performances will take place between 11am and 5pm. Inspired by the magnificent structure of the Temperate House, Cirque Bijou have created an unforgettable aerial show that will be a visual spectacle. Shows will take place on weekends and Bank Holidays, from 26 May to 2 September. There will be one 20 minute performance per hour between 12noon and 4pm. You Are Awesome How many times have your children complained because they are no good at sport, can’t do maths or really struggle with exams? If children believe they can’t do something, the chances are they won’t try. But what if they really could get better at anything they tried their hand at? Matthew Syed is setting out to help children excel at just about anything they put their mind to. You Are Awesome inspires and empowers young readers with a toolkit for developing a growth mindset and finding the confidence to realise their potential. The first children’s book from the Times journalist, two-time Olympian and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed, takes the themes and principles of his award-winning adult novels and recasts them for a 9+ readership. Using real life stories (concerning the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams and JK Rowling) Syed demonstrates that success really is earned rather than pre-ordained, and that our abilities can be transformed through practice. With a growth mindset, based on hard work and determination, practice, selfbelief and resilience, there’s no reason why anyone can’t achieve (almost) anything. Practical, insightful and positive, this is the book to help children build resilience, embrace their mistakes and grow into successful, happy adults. Matthew Syed’s number one best-selling book You Are Awesome is available for £9.99 online and from all good high street retailers.

This Half Term Greenwich Theatre is set to welcome, on Friday 1 June at 2pm and 6pm, a very unusual rabbit in a brand new show. Rufus Longbottom and the Space Rabbit is the latest family musical from the acclaimed Filament Theatre. It has been created from stories submitted by over 600 primary school children from around the country. “Children have huge imaginations and sometimes they take you by complete surprise”, said the show’s director, Sabina Netherclift. “Children don’t look at age in the same way as we do, so even old people who might not be able to get up out of a chair still want to make journeys and do things. The very first story of Rufus Longbottom had him travelling to Canada in his chair because he wanted to find some maple ice cream! Every character has been dreamed up by the children. Rufus Longbottom was invented by a child in Derbyshire, Space Rabbit from Oxfordshire and Picklepine, a pirate who is one of Space Rabbit’s enemies, is from East London. We have stitched other storylines together and worked with the children to make an adventure that has enough danger – there wasn’t enough earlier on!” Filament will be pioneering the use of loop station gloves during the show, with the performer playing the Space Rabbit manipulating the words, the songs and the sounds the audience hears. For more information visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk or call the box office on 020 8858 7755.

St Thomas the Apostle School
St Thomas the Apostle School and Sixth Form is an outstanding, all boys’ Catholic school with a mixed 6th Form. Our intake reflects the multi-faith community in which we live and we are a popular choice in our local area, with families recognising the outstanding all-round education we are able to provide. We continue to be one of the highest achieving schools nationally – both at GCSE and A Level. Our Progress 8 score of 0.91 in 2017 means that we are the highest performing non-selective boys’ school in the entire country. Our success is borne out of academic rigour within a supportive, caring environment. Most of our boys continue their education within our 6th form. Our highly regarded Oxbridge pathway has enabled our year 13’s to secure places at some of the best universities in the UK and beyond. Our achievements have been recognised on a national level, including being awarded the TES UK Secondary School of the Year 2017. The judges observed that, “this outstanding school manages to nurture the unique talents of its students alongside rigorous teaching and high expectations”. We know how challenging it can be trying to choose the right school for your son. As one boy remarked to an OFSTED inspector, “I entered as a boy and I leave a young man”. So by securing a place at our school it will be the start of a long and happy association between your family and our community. E Connolly, Headteacher

Eduardo, who received an offer to study Biological Sciences at the University of Oxford, came to the UK from Spain only 5 years ago and joined Ark Globe at Year 7. He said, “I never imagined even to get an offer from Oxford, but I had the wish. My teachers and peers at Ark Globe Academy taught me what I was worth and they are now helping me to fight for what I deserve.” Ark Globe has set its purpose to promote social justice in a fairer society where everyone will have equal opportunities to determine their own future, and puts this aim at the centre of its work every day. The Horniman Museum and Gardens is launching a new handson learning and discovery programme linked to the forthcoming World Gallery, opening on 29 June. Several new sessions will be introduced to help different age groups access and engage with the new gallery such as ‘Around the World with Winny the Walrus’ for Early Years and ‘Extreme Environments’ for secondary schools. The Horniman’s interactive, curriculum-linked learning sessions will allow pupils to touch, hold and study real museum objects from cultures displayed in the World Gallery – from an Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus to a Nigerian drum – and bring their topic to life. The Horniman will also offer 12 new topic-based schools’ learning resources to support the new World Gallery, introducing some of the fascinating anthropological objects on show with downloadable high-res images and information for teachers and students. School groups visiting the Horniman will receive topic-themed trails to help them discover some of the objects on display in the World Gallery. The World Gallery was developed in close collaboration with a Teacher Panel to ensure that it meets schools’ needs. Within the gallery, children will be able to interact with some of the exhibits for a multisensory learning experience. They can touch intricately tooled Tuareg metalwork, arctic seal and reindeer skin and a digital coral reef. They can smell aromatic herbs used by Bhutanese ritual healers in the Himalayas, listen to epic First Nations’ stories from the Pacific Northwest Coast, and even play in a Lagos market stall. Visit the website for more information about the Horniman Museum & Gardens’ Learning Sessions at www.horniman.ac.uk/learn/ learning-sessions.

Young Feminists Host Bankside Supper Club
Women chefs, restaurateurs and food writers gathered at Tonkotsu restaurant on London’s Bankside recently for the inaugural meeting of the Harris Academy Bermondsey (HAB) Feminist Society Supper Club. HABFemSoc is a platform for the girls to explore feminism and what it means for them, and also gives them a chance to meet women from different professions. Botaina, one of the sixth form organisers, told Primary Times, “We want to let people know what feminism is and what we stand for. Many people don’t know the meaning of feminism, they think it’s just for women, but it’s for men too.” Organised by HAB girls working with Head of Sixth Form, Lyndsay Harris, and photographer, Leonora Saunders, the supper club gave students the chance to network with influential women who have developed successful careers in the food industry. Guests included Romy Gill MBE, British Indian chef and cookery teacher who runs her own restaurant, Lisa Markwell, Food Editor of the Sunday Times, and Emma Reynolds, owner of the Tonkotsu chain of restaurants. The event also raised over £600 for the charity SafeLives, which is dedicated to ending domestic violence. Overall the evening was a big success. Many of the girls spoke of the importance of strong female role models and the Feminist Society Supper Club certainly provided those. St Matthew ‘Debate Mate’
On Thursday 19 April, St Matthew Academy secondary ‘Debate Mate’ students took part in the grand final of the ‘Debate Mate Cup’. ‘Debate Mate’ is a unique, international educational charity dedicated to improving students’ confidence, collaboration and speaking and listening skills through peer-to-peer debate mentoring. The students involved in the final had already been through a series of rigorous stages of the competition. They also take part in the after school debating club, which is facilitated by the English Department and students from the best universities across the UK. The aim of the scheme is to give young people the skills they need to become exceptional young leaders, both in school and in their future lives. On the night of the event, the Team A debaters got down to the very last round, the Grand Final! Their place in the competition had been fought out in previous rounds and unfortunately they lost out on the overall cup by just 6 points. St Matthew Academy therefore came second out of 19 schools from across the country. The B Team followed them closely by coming in third place. What an incredible achievement from both teams and a testament to the hard work and preparation put in, in the lead up to the event. The students were rewarded with certificates and medals and a pizza lunch with the Headteacher. Well done SMA debaters!

Disney’s hit West End musical Aladdin has launched a brand new video library to accompany its education programme. Nine short films have been made in consultation with teachers in order to help pupils prepare for their theatre experience as well as deepen their knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in theatre making. Aladdin’s curriculum-linked education resources are created for Key Stage 2 with workshops for pupils aged 7+ also available. Hosted by Angellica Bell, the videos feature exclusive new footage of rehearsals and interviews with both the show’s original creative team and the London cast and crew, which have been filmed in both London and New York. The video library will give teachers and students a new insight into Aladdin’s costumes, scenic design, music, characterisation, backstage crew, the ensemble, and more. To further enrich these resources all episodes feature end card questions to spark debate and encourage further learning. Free Workshops at The South London Gallery
Brazilian artist Luiz Zerbini is one of South America’s best known artists, recognised for his colourful figurative and abstract paintings. This exhibition at the South London Gallery is his first major UK solo show, displaying paintings, sculpture and film works. His
work explores contemporary culture, the natural environment and cityscapes, particularly Rio de Janeiro where he lives and works. The Gallery is offering free workshops to schools during the Summer Term suitable for primary and secondary age groups. Workshops take the exhibition as a starting point to explore themes such as natural and man-made forms, nature and architecture, the urban environment - its colours, textures, signs and movement, geometry and art, what is abstract and art and 2D and 3D work exploring paintings and sculptures. Workshops include developing critical analysis and ideas through group discussion, a practical element exploring the physical qualities and processes involved in the artwork and group-work. Workshops take place at the SLG in the galleries and art studio. The duration is 2-3 hours and timings can be flexible to fit into school timetables, eg 9.30am-12noon. Workshops are free of charge to school groups. The art studio/garden space can be used for lunches. The workshops respond to the exhibition programme so that the children can look at the artwork and take inspiration for their own work back in the studio. They work with an artist who leads on creative activities. Email the School & Community Projects Manager, Heather Kay for more information or to book a workshop - heather@ southlondongallery.org. My First Book of Quantum Physics Everything around us is composed of very, very small things known as subatomic particles. When scientists started to discover more about these particles they realised that in such a tiny world the laws of physics did not apply and they needed to generate a new set of theories, which are known today as quantum physics. The science of these particles allows us to have electronic devices from smartphones and computers to medical imaging equipment and microwaves. However, quantum physics also pushes us to the very boundaries of what we know about science, reality and the structure of the universe. This new world is an amazing place where quantum particles can do weird and wonderful things. Have your mind blown as you find out fun facts like how two atoms can exist in the same place. My First Book of Quantum Physics is an entertaining illustrated guide which explains key concepts and big ideas in a simple and accessible way, giving children a fun and engaging introduction to the fascinating and mysterious world of physics. It’s a great way to enthuse them with STEM subjects in general and Physics in particular. My First Book of Quantum Physics is available online and from all good high street retailers for £12.99. 30
