First Railway Ramblers to Hit the Trail at Epping A family of Primary Times readers from Balham have been the first to take advantage of the new Epping Ongar Railway Rambler. The ticket has been designed to encourage families from London to take a single journey by heritage bus and train to Ongar and return by walking a 7½ mile section of the scenic Essex Way. Early in September, Alison StewartPaterson and her family were the first Railway Ramblers! They caught the bus from outside Epping Tube station on their way to Ongar. Her family had travelled by tube to Epping for the bus to North Weald and then by train to Ongar. It took the family a leisurely 5 hours to get back to Epping, stopping at two pubs, spotting wildlife and farm animals and taking in the scenery.

Alison said, “We saw the offer in an email earlier in the week and thought the walk would be a great way of extending the summer for us. The boys loved spotting wildlife, looking at bugs and were delighted to be so close to the horses and sheep. It was a perfect family day out of London. The route was clearly mapped out and easy to follow, and we loved the magic of the forest! Once we reached Epping station we were tired out but had a great sense of achievement!” The Railway Rambler is designed to encourage people to travel to this very rural part of Essex by public transport and the walk from Ongar takes in some lovely sights including Greensted Church, the world’s oldest wooden church. Passengers are encouraged to enjoy this part of Essex, on the edge of London, and to visit the medieval town of Chipping Ongar. Dean Walton, the Railway’s General Manager, told Primary Times, “I was delighted to meet Alison and her family at the start of their Railway Ramble. This new ticket is opening up Ongar and the surrounding countryside for day trippers from London in a win-win for the local economy and the Railway. I was so pleased when she told me what a lovely day the family had had.”

“Until 1994 the Central Line ran all the way to Ongar, now the line has been put to use as a heritage tourist attraction bringing much needed visitors to Ongar. Making it easy to come by public transport puts less pressure on the roads and car parks in and around Ongar, as well getting families and children active.” For more information, visit www.eorailway.co.uk Photo credit: Alison Stewart-Paterson 4

Guardians of the Planet: How to be an Eco-Hero

Written by award-winning author Clive Gifford and illustrated by wildlife artist Jonathan Woodward, who specialises in a cut-paper collage style using recycled materials, Guardians of the Planet: How to be an Eco-Hero is printed in full colour using special environmentally-friendly waterless inks on FSC paper. It will include a foreword by ClientEarth trustee Brian Eno. Through a mix of compelling facts, creative activities and proactive tips, each chapter of the book focuses on a particular area of the environment, inspiring children to engage with environmental issues in everyday situations. From reusing clothes and composting food to reducing water waste and giving wildlife a helping hand, the unique ‘Guardian’ theme of the book provides everything a child needs to protect particular areas of the environment. For example, readers can find out how to care for the oceans as a ‘Keeper of the Coast’, plant trees as a ‘Friend of the Forests’ and learn all about recycling as a ‘Home Hero’. Guardians of the Planet: How to be an Eco-Hero by Clive Gifford and Jonathan Woodward is published by Buster Books on 26 September. Happy Halloween and More days out...

Halloween Fun with the Epping Ongar Railway The ‘Ghost Train’ runs on the Epping Ongar Railway for four zany days in October from ‘North Weird’ Station when this former part of the Underground is taken over by ghouls and zombies. The owls from the Epping Forest Hawk and Owl Sanctuary will be flying in as well. Look out too for the ‘Ghost Bus’! The Halloween Specials are a regular feature at the Railway. The staff and volunteers always ensure that the Ghost Train is good fun and this year is no different. The buses pick up passengers from right outside Epping Tube station and whisk you to North Weird. There, you’ll find a children’s magic show, a disco, a bar and Halloween games. Recent paranormal investigations have shown there could be ghosts at the Epping Ongar Railway, but all children have a chance of finding them on the Ghost Hunt! Of course there’s also a full-sized Ghost Train to Ongar with its gruesome graveyard. Travel on the train is not for the faint-hearted. For more details on the EOR visit www. eorailway.co.uk/events/halloween. Trains are running on 26, 27, 30 and 31 October. Adult fares are £16 and children £12.

On the other hand, if you are already planning your New Year’s Eve, for the ultimate experience, go on board one of their vessels and enjoy a perfect view of the fireworks, far away from the crowds. It is all of the festive sparkle with all of the sights. For more information, please visit www.citycruises.com.

It will be based in Karnataka, South West India and will be open to students from India and around the world from 2021. Whitgift’s partnership with WESc will focus on providing academic support to the School, including establishing all aspects of the curriculum and syllabus development, assessment and best teaching and learning practices. Part of the WESc syllabus will include the International Baccalaureate, where Whitgift holds the position as the top boys’ school in the UK.

Headmaster Chris Ramsey told Primary Times, “We hope that Whitgift’s involvement, alongside a number of international partners will make a genuine difference to education in a growing economy and allow us to participate in a sustainable educational model. I’m excited at the prospect of how our students and the entire school community will benefit from collaborating with such a forwardlooking ‘green’ school.” Partnering with WESc is just one of many ways that the School focuses on student’s roles as global citizens. Long-standing partnerships with Japan, through an annual exchange scheme, language partner schools and links through the boarding community have been well established for several years.

A recent CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education) report (Reflecting Realities – Survey of Ethnic Diversity in UK Children’s Books) showed that only 1% of children’s books published in the UK in 2017 featured a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) main character and only 4% had a BAME character at all, despite 33% of UK schoolchildren being identified as having BAME origins. In response to this, Lynsey Pollard has set up ‘Little Box of Books’, a company that curates collections of children’s books for schools and families that are inclusive and representative. Lynsey and the team at Little Box of Books work with top publishers to source books that show diversity in race and culture, family set up and socio-economic background, that smash gender and disability stereotypes. They are on a mission to get them into as many schools as possible to help children better understand the world and their place in it. They provide books for EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Boxes start from £99.99 for 20 titles but bigger, bespoke collections are available, with big discounts for interested schools. For more information, contact lynsey@littleboxofbooks.co.uk or head to www.littleboxofbooks.co.uk.

Special tours of the school are available up to the application deadline date of 31st October for September 2020 entry. Please phone 020 8761 1426 and ask to speak to Mrs Lea (ext 217)

St Dunstan’s College

Girls and boys join St Dunstan’s College Senior School from a large number of preparatory and primary schools across southeast London and beyond. Moving from junior school to senior school is a major milestone in a child’s life. Parents and children alike may feel nervous about the transition. There are so many new people to meet, new buildings to navigate, and new subjects to delve into – it can seem overwhelming. However, St Dunstans’ relatively small size allows for new students to settle in very quickly. St Dunstans’ help them along the way by running a New Joiners’ Induction Day at the beginning of each Michaelmas Term during which the College is open only to new students. During the Induction Day, students get to know their form tutors, subject teachers and classmates as well as how to find their classes and College facilities. With small class sizes, excellent pastoral support and plenty of friendly and helpful returning students, children quickly make friends and find their way around the school. Last year, St Dunstan’s College celebrated excellent GSCE grades. 82% of grades were A* - B, with over 60% being A*- A. The school has also recently added an additional bus route serving the Blackheath area. St Dunstan’s College hosts regular open mornings and tours for prospective parents. The next Senior School Open Morning for 11+ and 13+ entry will take place on Saturday 16 November, 9.30–11.30am. Guests will be able to tour the College, hear from the Headmaster and find out about scholarships and bursaries. 16

Learn to be a Park Ranger in Sri Lanka Tour operator Yonder has introduced a new family summer itinerary in Sri Lanka, which includes learning the skills of a park ranger in the lesser known national park of Gal Oya and learning to surf in the gentle waves of Arugam Bay, with ideal weather conditions during the summer months. Gal Oya National Park is still relatively undiscovered by visitors and offers a great opportunity to see some of Sri Lanka’s best wildlife away from the crowds. The park has the country’s largest inland body of water and is the only place in the country where you can see Asian elephants swimming between the islands that dot the lake. It is also one of the last areas in Sri Lanka to be home to an indigenous tribe, the Vedda. Yonder can organise special boat and jeep safaris for children to really get under the skin of the life of a park ranger and learn about the park’s eco-systems and the animals’ behaviours. They will also meet the chief elder from the Vedda tribe who will take them on a hike through the jungle to learn about how the forest ecosystem can support their way of life. Arugum Bay, around three hours from the park, is a great location to try surfing for the first time during the summer with the best waves arriving onto the pristine quiet beaches. There are small shacks selling cold drinks and noodles, which are ideal for children. The new summer family itinerary also includes cycling through rural villages near Kandy and a stay in Tangalle. Prices start from £2,900 per person for two weeks. For more information, please visit www.yonder.com.

With acres of beautiful countryside and miles of stunning coastline, there’s no better destination for a family holiday than Cornwall. The Olde House is just five miles away from the beautiful Polzeath Beach and 10 minutes from the popular Camel Trail, which runs through the town of Wadebridge. As well as being able to enjoy the beautiful Cornish scenery, guests staying at The Olde House can get up close to the animals on the weekly farm rides and at Pets Corner. It’s a great place to spot wildlife too, with a two mile farm trail draped over the countryside and a bird hide which looks across the farm’s wetlands. Guests can join the team this November in welcoming hundreds of little lambs on the farm. Taking place on the weekends of 22 – 24 November and 29 November – 1 December, it’s a chance to get up close to the animals, feeding and caring for the new born lambs. For a more luxurious feel, those staying at The Olde House have use of the newly renovated swimming pool, which features a separate children’s pool, jacuzzi and sauna. The farm also has outdoor and indoor play areas, tennis courts and a brand new games room. For more information, visit www.theoldehouse.co.uk.
