We are so glad to be back after such a long time of not printing. When we last published a magazine, back in March, we had no idea that we wouldn’t publish another one until now. What a difficult and stressful time it’s been for everyone. I really hope that life returns to normal soon. Thank you so much to all the school staff for helping to hand out Primary Times this month. We’ve worked really hard to be able to publish this issue. Thank you to all our staff, advertisers, suppliers and schools who have supported us. Our magazines were delivered wrapped in protective bags and packed in cartons so thank you to our printers and distributors too for taking such care. September is when we publish our comprehensive Choosing your New School feature, designed to help Year 5 and Year 6 pupils decide on which secondary school to choose. Some schools are hoping to hold open days at the schools while others are going to hold virtual open days. (Some schools didn’t know at the time of us going to press.) We haven’t been able to publish our open day tables this year, but we have included a table of secondary schools so do check when and how they are organising their open days this year. Many businesses have been hit very hard with the lockdown and sadly not every business will survive. Now that times are hopefully getting a little easier do try and support your local businesses. They really need you. Stay safe and well.

At Polka Theatre, it is their job to bring fantastic stories to life. But did you know that behind every play you see on stage, there is a whole host of inspirational people involved in its creation? Polka Playmakers invites you behind the scenes to meet some of the brilliant creatives who make their shows to tell you about their jobs. What knowledge, skills and experience do they bring to the show? Hear from a playwright, composer, stage manager and a designer about the creative process and their top tips on how to get into the business. Maybe you’ll even hear a tale or two about some of the challenges they faced along the way. The Polka also have two workshops where you can have a go at making your own theatre. Build a model box to present a stage design for your favourite show or learn about the ancient Chinese shadow puppetry tradition and make your own puppets. A Safe Return to Jigsaw Performing Arts
Jigsaw Arts celebrated 25 years this summer, but they certainly didn’t expect to have the year we have had! But they are delighted to be back doing what they love doing, after a challenging few months. Health and safety have always been their number one priority, but they have further enhanced procedures in all their schools now, ready for a return this autumn. They ran a hugely successful trial of these new systems in one school during the summer, to ensure that they created a safe environment, whilst still providing a fun and creative outlet for students. Sessions are designed to develop children’s confidence, focus and social skills from an early age, giving them a head start in life. Performing arts is great for well-being and happiness. Dance really gets bodies moving, excellent for aerobic fitness and co-ordination. Learning to use breath and voice to make a great sound in singing is exhilarating and improves the speaking voice. Drama combines movement and voice as well as lots of teamwork and thinking on your feet which builds confidence, creativity and self-esteem. There is nothing better than performing arts to connect and bring people together. It’s also lots of fun and lots of laughs - just what we need right now! For more information or to book a two-week trial, search for your nearest school on their website www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk.

For the first time, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, will be filmed in the UK at a ruined castle location. For those who prefer their castle visits without the threat of a Bushtucker Trial, we’ve rounded up some local alternatives in England to visit this autumn. Hever Castle in Kent has a history spanning more than 700 years and was the childhood home of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. Initially a moated defensive castle dating back to 1270, this romantic setting is packed full of Tudor portraits and tapestries, and features fine views out over Hever Lake. Set within the 125 acres of grounds is a 100-year-old Yew Maze. See the website for details of family attractions and special events. Pre-booking to explore Hever Castle and its grounds is essential at www.hevercastle.co.uk Leeds Castle occupies 500 acres in the heart of the Kent countryside. Leeds Castle celebrated its 900th anniversary in 2019.Visitors can trace its journey from its Norman roots, through royal ownership and its time as a magnificent Tudor palace for Henry VIII, to the country retreat that stands today. The Gatehouse Exhibition explores this history while the castle’s Bird of Prey Centre features displays from hawks, owls and eagles among other majestic birds. All visits must be reserved online at www.leeds-castle.com Further afield, just to the west of London lies Windsor Castle, the world’s oldest and largest inhabited castle, having been a royal residence for around 950 years. At Arundel Castle in West Sussex, many of the original features such as the Norman Keep, medieval Gatehouse and Barbican survive. The whole family can have fun learning about castle sieges with interactive exhibits, games and costumes. Photo credit: Hever Castle & Gardens

Choosing your New School
Choosing your Child’s Secondary School
It’s been a strange year – there’s an understatement if ever there was one. However, some things still have to happen and choosing your child’s secondary school is one of those. If your child is in Year 6, you still need to submit your application by the end of October. If they’re in Year 5, it’s also good to get your ideas together now. Choosing a secondary school may at first appear to be a daunting and complicated decision faced by parents. However it doesn’t need to be. Although it’s important and with so many schools to choose from, with so many variables and specialisations, there are ways to make the process of finding the best school for your child easier. We have lots of ideas here as well as a table of local school websites to help you. Schools are telling you about themselves in different ways. Some are still holding open days but numbers are limited to maintain safe social distancing and booking is almost always required. So make sure that you register nice and early so as not to miss out. Others are doing virtual open days but numbers may still be limited and attendance and appointments to speak online to staff may still need to be booked so don’t leave it too long.

Trinity Academy
Trinity Academy is a co-educational secondary school (ages 1118). Their distinctive ethos is rooted in clear and timeless values of wisdom, fairness, courage and self-discipline. As part of the outstanding Future Academies family of schools, Trinity Academy’s relentless focus is on setting and achieving aspirational and rigorous educational standards. To that end, they offer pupils of all abilities a style of education more usually found in grammar schools or the independent sector. Exemplary knowledge-rich teaching and learning drives everything they do and is underpinned by what is proven to work best in the classroom, using resources exclusively developed by the Future Academies Curriculum Centre. Teachers are highly qualified and passionate subject specialists, and class sizes are kept small with a maximum of 26 pupils so that teachers and form tutors can closely monitor every pupil’s academic and pastoral progress and personal development. The broad and deep curriculum is strongly grounded in the academic EBacc subjects and is complemented by the study of Latin and an exceptionally full range of creative subjects (art, music, drama and food & nutrition) in Year 7 and beyond. They focus across the curriculum on grammar and vocabulary in order to develop pupils’ full powers of written and spoken expression and self-confidence. The Sixth Form offers the full range of academic A Levels, including economics and psychology, that all lead to degree-level study at top universities. Trinity Academy believe that education is about more than just preparation for the world of work. An excellent, rounded education is valuable in itself and grants access to all-empowering cultural capital. Trinity Academy ensure that all pupils take part in a wide range of enrichment activities and educational trips to develop their creative, sporting, intellectual and cultural abilities and interests. The most recent Ofsted inspection (November 2018) praised every aspect of the school, grading the school as Outstanding in every category. They are polite, thoughtful and determined to do well.” “Staff at all levels go the extra mile to make sure pupils achieve, feel cared for and thrive within a supportive and productive learning environment.” “Teachers’ high expectations are at the heart of teaching in the school and pupils’ attitudes to learning are highly positive.” St Thomas’ achievements have also been recognised on a national level, including being awarded the TES UK Secondary School of the Year 2017. End of Year at St Matthew Academy
On the evening of the 15 July, St Matthew Academy brought the curtain down on their unique Year 6 cohort’s primary years and simultaneously welcomed them into the secondary phase. On an evening with weather fit for all that they had achieved, children and their families attended the end of Year 6 picnic celebration. With socially distanced mats set out on the school field and pre-packed snack baskets for each family to ensure Covid compliance, all were able to greatly enjoy the quiz put on by the Year 6 teaching team and entire academy leadership team. With rounds such as ‘Name that Tune’ and ‘Scattergories’ interspersed with opportunities for photographs and reminiscing about the preceding 7 years, it was an evening that will live long in the memories of staff, pupils and families. It was the culmination of a truly fantastic day which also saw the official screening of the long awaited ‘SMA lockdown’ film, expertly directed by Mr Cameron and starring a cast of Year 6s made for the stage! The evening drew to a close with both Head of Primary, Miss Chick and Head of School, Ms Baldwin speaking about their pride in the children for all they have become to this point and of their anticipation for what the next chapter of their education journey at SMA will hold.

Bike to School Week
Sustrans have teamed up with the Bikeability Trust to invite schools across the UK to take part in this year’s Bike to School Week. The event runs from 28 September to 2 October and celebrates the amazing benefits that an active school run can bring. Organised by Sustrans in partnership with the Bikeability Trust, Bike to School Week celebrates cycling to school and the benefits of travelling actively for children. Evidence suggests that the change to daily travel habits during the Covid-19 lockdown resulted in more people cycling than before. However, the latest figures show that only 2% of primary school children in England currently travel to school by cycle. Recently released guidance from the Department for Education shows that at least 50% of journeys to school of two miles or less need to be walked or cycled in order to allow space for those on public transport who need to travel further. This is due to the current physical distancing restrictions on public transport. Cycle training, such as Bikeability, can help pupils cycle safely and confidently on the road. To support schools, there are a range of resources available for teachers. These include school posters, a 5-day pack of daily activities to be completed in class and a video guide with simple practices to check your bike is safe to ride. These activities aim to inspire pupils to think about their journeys to school, understand the benefits of active travel, and consider the causes and effects of air pollution, as they return to school life. Teachers can also access the Bikeability Trust’s ‘Tools for Schools’ assets, a toolbox of exciting, curriculum-linked resources for Early Years, and Key Stages 1 and 2. Photo credit: Chris Foster
S.E.N.D. in the Clowns
S.E.N.D. in the Clowns started as a collection of diary entries and a way for author and mother, Suzy Rowland, to make sense of her son’s frequent exclusions from primary school. Suzy’s aim isn’t just to tell a personal story, it’s an essential autism/ADHD family guide to help parents untangle red tape, stay engaged and feel empowered as they stagger through a system that struggles to educate children who are different. Packed with guidance, S.E.N.D. in the Clowns is a thought-provoking and uplifting read and a unique handbook of self-care and practical advice for parents who find themselves on the autism merry-goround. S.E.N.D. in the Clowns is a play on the acronym Special Educational Needs and Disability, hinting that these children’s behaviour may look like they are the sad clown sitting in the corner, or the zany clown, performing slap stick tricks to keep everyone in the classroom entertained. The reality is more poignant. These neurodiverse children are highly sensitive individuals in a school environment that can feel frightening and confusing. S.E.N.D. in the Clowns takes you on two journeys. It’s both a personal story from parent and child - from babe to pre-teen, and professional guidance for parents and professionals who work with, teach or support autistic or ADHD children. S.E.N.D. in the Clowns by Suzy Rowland was published at the beginning of September in paperback at £12.99.

Dulwich College is one of the UK’s top independent schools for boys aged 7 to 18. It is recognised for its academic excellence, its confident yet unpretentious boys, and its diverse and welcoming community.
Help with School Fees
Financial support of academically bright boys from all economic backgrounds is one of the College’s core values. Over 35% of boys are supported with financial awards. In the academic year 2019-20, £3.86m was granted to support Bursaries and £1m was awarded in Scholarships.
An Outstanding Education
Dulwich College’s aim is to develop the natural talents and abilities of each boy, giving them the opportunity to excel in every aspect of life. The members of the teaching staff are highly experienced and passionate about their subjects, and class sizes are small with just 18 or 20 boys and smaller at A Level. College facilities include brand new laboratories, a theatre, music rooms, art studios, a Sports Club, a garden and a beautiful campus of 75 acres. With excellent GCSEs and A Levels, boys attend top universities and, increasingly, take up the opportunities of prestigious paid apprenticeships with major international companies. Many boys choose to work in medicine, engineering and the law, and others will take up a number of jobs not yet dreamt of in entrepreneurial, technological or cybernetic and innovative enterprises. Boys also become professional actors, musicians, sportsmen, writers, historians and artists.

A Dulwich College Bursary
A Dulwich College Bursary is the offer of financial assistance to cover the cost of fees - in full or in part. Bursaries range from 100% of fees to 10% of fees. The majority of awards are between 100% and 75%. Bursaries provide fee support to the families of boys who pass the entrance examinations and interview and are offered a place, but whose financial circumstances mean they cannot afford to pay (in full or in part) the school fees. Dulwich College is academically selective and boys who are offered a place – with or without a Bursary and/or Scholarship – are in the top 15-20% of academic ability for their age group across the UK. A Dulwich College Bursary is means-tested. In making an award, the College’s Bursary Committee takes into account family income, assets and other factors. As a broad guideline, families whose total income is £35,000pa or less might receive a Bursary of 100% of school fees and families whose total income is around £65,000pa might receive financial support of 50% of school fees. These figures are indicative only. For all confidential Bursary enquiries please contact the Registrar, Mrs Sarah Betts on bettss@dulwich.org.uk or 020 8299 9263. She is looking forward to hearing from you. Alternatively, please visit the website for a digital prospectus pack. The Olympian-led Beth Tweddle Curriculum Programme is available to schools across the UK from September. The new 10-week online programme focuses on physical literacy, as well as Beth Tweddle values such as friendship, respect and determination and is aligned to Key Stages 1 and 2, with outcomes across Science, PHSE and Physical Education. The complete programme can be used for the whole school and consists of weekly videos and resources provided exclusively by Olympic medallist and world champion gymnast, Beth Tweddle MBE. Since launching in the North West in 2015, the Beth Tweddle Curriculum has engaged over 30,000 children and more than 300 schools. Beth Tweddle told Primary Times, “I’m passionate about ensuring all children are given the opportunity to have fun and stay active in school, so this next step to offer our programme nationally is something myself and the team are so proud of. We’ve had nothing but great feedback so far from pupils and teachers and we feel now is the right time for the programme to be made available to all primary schools. “Now, more than ever, it’s crucial for children to be fit and active. We designed the programme to be fun and engaging with the ability to deliver both in the classroom or living room, if pupils are learning from home.” Schools that sign up will receive a full 10-week programme, with each week focusing on a new value, as well as videos, a knowledge and understanding piece (KS1 and KS2), a physical literacy lesson, a 30-second participation challenge and a certificate for each week. The programme works within school term times so there are three start points in a year. However, a school can theoretically start at any point during the term and deliver it continuously for 10 sessions. The physical literacy programme aligns with social distancing as it can be delivered within teachers’ own parameters and can support teachers who do not usually deliver Physical Education. To find out more or sign up to the programme, go to bethtweddlegymnastics.co.uk/national-curriculum or email samantha. scotland@btgymnastics.co.uk.
James Allen’s Girls’ School
James Allen’s Girls’ School has been inspiring and educating pupils for over 270 years and is the oldest girls’ school in London. At JAGS, teaching a sense of social responsibility and encouraging pupils to play active roles in the community is as important as the school curriculum. Diversity is their strength and they strive to help all girls fulfil their potential. JAGS welcomes girls aged 4-18, with admission primarily at 4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+. Their pupils achieve consistently fantastic results, with 71% of A Levels graded A*/A and 91% of GCSES graded A*/A in 2019. However, JAGS pupils pride themselves on much more than this, using and developing their own creative, athletic and social skills to act upon concerns for others, whilst developing their own self-confidence and independence. JAGS strives to attract intellectually curious girls, regardless of their economic background. Their bursaries are crucial in making them accessible to everyone, not just to those whose families can afford the fees. They have their own means-tested bursary scheme for all year groups from 11+ entry upwards. Bursaries are subject to financial circumstances and can offer financial assistance for up to 100% of the fees as well as the costs of uniform, travel, school trips and lunches. Currently, their bursaries cover well over 80% of all fees for the 130 pupils whose families receive them. Further information can be found on their website, www.jags.org.uk.

Graveney School
Graveney has a beautiful, leafy campus which comprises 11 buildings including a former Georgian stately home, a Victorian school building, a number of architecturally interesting blocks built in the 1960s and a prizewinning new block which opened in 2016. A further new block opened in September 2019 which includes 10 humanities classrooms and an observatory. Graveney’s Year 7 pupils are drawn from a wide number of local schools, with the vast majority of pupils living locally. Graveney has been deemed ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted five times. In 2019, the most recent examined results, 91% of pupils achieved a grade 4 or above in both English and mathematics GCSE and an astonishing 45% of all grades were 7 – 9. In 2020 these achievements, whilst non-examined, were exceeded. The school’s overall attainment score places it in the top 10% of schools in the country. In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, a wide range of sports, musical and cultural extra-curricular activities are offered to ensure that pupils are well rounded and encouraged to excel in a variety of different areas. There is a particular emphasis on outdoor education, and all Year 7 Graveney pupils participate in a weeklong trip to Wales as part of a programme to build confidence, resilience and a cohesive community within the school. Outdoor education continues in Year 8, feeding into the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme in Year 9. Graveney looks forward to welcoming you to the school’s virtual open events. They provide excellent opportunities for prospective pupils and their parents to have a virtual tour of the school’s facilities, to visit subject departments and see their exciting approaches to
teaching as well as to find out the answers to the many ‘frequently asked questions’. This information will all be presented via video link, with speeches, presentations and video clips delivered by the senior team, teachers and students. Virtual Open events will be held online on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 October. For more information email info@graveney. wandsworth.sch.uk or visit www.graveney.org.
Discover St Dunstan’s
St Dunstan’s College, Catford has taken the decision that open events planned for September to November can no longer go ahead in their usual format following the Coronavirus pandemic. Last year, the College welcomed more than 2,000 individuals to St Dunstan’s across six major events; however, the safety of staff, pupils and visiting families is paramount. The College is delighted to announce that it will be launching a series of smaller ‘Discover St Dunstan’s’ events that will allow prospective families to visit the site safely and following social distancing guidelines. During the visit, families will have an opportunity to speak to the leadership team, including the headmaster, Mr Nicholas Hewlett, and have a guided tour to see the College’s facilities. There will also be a series of virtual events with the leadership team for prospective families to join from the comfort of their home. Speaking about the new format, Director of Marketing, Admissions and Development, Mrs Isabelle Blake-James told Primary Times, “We are delighted to be able to still offer prospective families a chance to visit the College site and experience a taste of life at St Dunstan’s.

Primary Times spoke to Helen Shorrock, Principal at Burntwood School. “Choosing a new school for our children can be a daunting experience. I always suggest that it is important to make a careful analysis of the breadth of curriculum offer, whether the school has a good record with regard to examination success and where progression for the youngsters to Higher Education is the norm. A substantial 6th Form is important, as these can offer a wider range of subjects and more flexibility of subject choice for the young person. A good school will also provide a wide range of sporting and extracurricular activities as well as excellent dance, drama and music teaching. It is important that every child is treated as an individual and that the school works in partnership with the parents to encourage the very best from the young person. At Burntwood, we encourage our young women to be articulate, thoughtful individuals who are able to express their opinions whilst also being able to listen to and consider the views of others. We believe strongly that all our young people should have the opportunity to study and embrace a varied curriculum that will allow them to access academic, creative and practical subjects enabling them progress to a host of world class further education establishments.
At Burntwood we are proud of the tradition of success that encourages our students to be independent, articulate young women who take power and control over their lives in an informed and intelligent way. Burntwood School is recognised as a Science Specialist School and has the coveted ‘Sportsmark’ and ‘Artsmark Gold’ awards. Examination results continue to be excellent at Key stage 4 and 5. Burntwood School is an inclusive community. This is recognised by the Rights Respecting UNICEF Gold Award. We provide opportunities for all our learners, whether they have special educational needs or are part of our gifted and talented cohort. We believe that our students deserve the best and at Burntwood we understand the importance of a collaborative approach between staff, students and parents, working together to support the students in reaching their full potential. All of this is embodied in our commitment to provide ‘the best education today for the women of tomorrow’.”
