So whether you walk, dance, swim, floss or round up your mates for a match, order your free fundraising pack, have fun and help to make a real difference. It’s Game On. Visit www.sportrelief.com for the latest details. Our Easter magazine is published on Monday 16 March so look out for it in schools that week - just in time for World Poetry Day on Saturday 21 March, Mother’s Day/Mothering Sunday on 22 March and Spanish Paella Day on Friday 27 March....! World Book Day is the registered charity behind the world’s biggest annual celebration of children’s books, with a mission to offer every child and young person the opportunity to read and love books. It is sponsored by National Book Tokens and supported generously each year by the publishing industry, book trade, authors and illustrators. Every year, with a host of publishers, World Book Day curates a list of bespoke £1 books for children and young people across the UK and Ireland, which they can choose for

free at their local bookshop or supermarket using their £1 World Book Day book token. This year’s list of £1 books is the most diverse to date and packed with best-selling authors and illustrators. International bestseller Anthony Horowitz returns to the secret world of MI6 with new classified files from Alex Rider. Onjali Q Raúf, founder of Making Herstory and multiaward-winning author of The Boy at the Back of the Class, shares The Day We Met the Queen. For older readers there is empowering new non-fiction from author of You Are Awesome, award-winning journalist and former Olympian, Matthew Syed. The Kissing Booth (one of Netflix’s most successful films of 2018) continues in The Kissing Booth: Road Trip! by Beth Reekles, and Split, a powerful new story by the author of I Am Thunder and winner of the Branford Boase award, Muhammad Khan, will also be available. Share a Story is the theme at the heart of a three year World Book Day campaign, encouraging parents and carers to go beyond dressing up to read and share stories with their children for ten minutes every day. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future. World Book Day aims to inspire new reading habits for adults and children, underlining just how important this shared time is. The organisation is bringing together some of the most influential people in the country - from celebrities and TV presenters, to politicians and sports stars - to promote reading for pleasure and asking them to #ShareaStory on 5 March. The day also sees children bringing books to life through an array of organised events and activities in schools, bookshops, libraries and at home. World Book Day will be taking place on the 5 March. Konnie Huq Supports the Where’s Wally? Fun Run at the Olympic Park
In an exciting Olympic year, on 15 March, the annual Where’s Wally? Fun Run will be coming to the iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the first time. Supported by Walker Books, the home of the London Olympics will see hundreds of runners, families and book lovers dressed up as the popular children’s book character, Wally, all running, jogging or walking to raise money for the National Literacy Trust. The event is a fun day out for the whole family and includes a 10k and 5k run with a 1k version for kids under 12. What’s more, families will also be able to meet children’s author, and former Blue Peter presenter, Konnie Huq. Konnie will be at the Olympic Park on race day to cheer on the runners and sign copies of her debut children’s book, Cookie and the Most Annoying Boy in the World. Last year, around 1,000 participants aged 10 months to 84 years donned their stripes and made their way around Clapham Common to raise over £30,000 for the charity. All proceeds from the event help to change the life stories of disadvantaged children in the UK through literacy. Konnie Huq described the day to Primary Times as, “What a fun and fab way to incorporate both exercise and reading - I can’t wait to see and cheer on all the ‘Wallys’ running! It’ll be a vision in stripes!” Find out more and register for the 2020 Where’s Wally? Fun Run at www.literacytrust.org.uk/.

Ark Evelyn Grace Academy prides itself in being a community of learners where both students and teachers constantly seek to improve. Consequently, teachers model the academy belief that there is no substitute for hard work and that this is the key to success. The teachers are experts in their academic fields. Their aim is to enable every child to master key concepts and skills, as well as expose them to the very best that has been said and written within their respective subjects. The academy’s curriculum is both broad and deep. Ark Evelyn Grace children not only devote extra time to becoming literate and numerate, but are also eloquent, knowledgeable and thirsty to know more. Ark Evelyn Grace Academy provides a rich and diverse curriculum with a particular focus on the core subjects, maths, English and science, as well as the humanities, arts and sport. A mix of traditional and modern subjects are also offered, from geography, history and religious education, to ICT and Mandarin, so students get a broad and rich education. The curriculum is extremely rigorous, with regular assessments to track and inform student’s progress. The enrichment opportunities offered beyond the curriculum are second to none. These include many clubs, including Mandarin, Portuguese, Duke of Edinburgh, an academy choir, brass band, dance and basketball, to name but a few. The academy’s sports facilities are excellent and team achievements are impressive. At Ark Evelyn Grace, the ethos is that there is no substitute for hard work and this, above all else, will help students understand and achieve excellence. The teachers want to help each student gain a firm knowledge and understanding of their subjects, so that their passion grows.
Raheem is London School Chef of the Year
Raheem Morgan, chef at Coopers Lane Primary School in Grove Park, has been crowned LACA London School Chef of the Year 2020 against stiff competition from school chefs from all over the capital. Raheem’s Mexican spiced chicken with a tomato rice and flatbread with roasted cauliflower and dry slaw followed by winter spiced crumble slice - a berry and apple crumble slice with vanilla sauce - wowed the judges and showed how far school catering has moved over the last few years. Competitors had 90 minutes to prepare, cook and present four portions each of a two course imaginative meal suitable for serving en masse to 11 year olds in primary or secondary schools. Raheem will now move on to the national finals in March where he will compete against all the other regional winners. We’re all rooting for you Raheem and don’t forget that in the Primary Times office, we can always be bribed with food.

Pupils Plant Green Screen to Protect their Playground
Pupils from Ilderton Primary School in Southwark have been helping to plant a new green screen and flower beds around their school to help protect them from harmful traffic fumes and noise. The school has a playground that is lower than the busy Ilderton Road, which runs alongside it, and as a result pollutants were able to easily enter the school playground. Now, thanks to support and funding from the council, the school has a barrier of ivy, evergreen trees and planting between the road and the playground, plus extra flowerbeds and trees on the other side of the area. Carol Askins, Headteacher at Ilderton School, told Primary Times, “The new landscaping looks great and will make a real difference. We are really pleased with the work so far and the pupils are excited to see it when it is finished.”

Evelina Hospital Made from 60,000 LEGO Bricks The Evelina Children’s Hospital has been brought to life with a model replica made from 60,000 LEGO pieces. The 1/50th scale re-creation of the hospital building features more than 200 different LEGO Minifigures. It was unveiled with the help of patient Marina Yaqobi, who placed the final minifigure on the model, which was created to look like her. Last year, Marina spent eight months at Evelina London receiving treatment for a serious lung problem and kidney failure. The LEGO model was donated by Fairy Bricks, a charity with one simple objective, to get LEGO into the hands of children in hospital. They work closely with hospital play specialists to assist them in their vital role in helping children recover more quickly from an illness. The model was designed and constructed by ergonomics consultant Gary Davis, who has volunteered for Fairy Bricks for several years. The aim of the design was to create the most accurate representation possible and capture the colourful and vibrant feel of the building – which includes a replica of the atrium’s distinctive glass ceiling. The model has countless recognisable interior details including the main entrance, reception areas and central walkway on the ground and first floor. Staff got involved by making beds for the wards out of LEGO bricks and creating different minifigures to represent staff members and patients.

The Boy with the Saucepan Hat There’s really only one word to describe this book and that’s ‘FUN’. The Boy with the Saucepan Hat is the hilarious new book from local Kent author Martyn Harvey. When Oliver Todd wakes up with a saucepan stuck on his head, he is obviously a bit cheesed off. But when he gets to the hospital Emergency Room, things go from bad to worse. The book is written in charming rhyming couplets. That sounds complicated but in fact it makes it great fun to read and enhances the comedy. Younger children will enjoy having it read to them while older ones will have a lovely time reading it for themselves. They’ll have to prise it away from their mums and dads first though! Also, if you do have to take a child to hospital, this is the book to take. It will take some of the boredom out of the wait and make the whole experience a bit less scary. Oh and watch out for the dragon or was it a crocodile? (You’ll have to read the book to understand the significance of that). The Boy with the Saucepan Hat by Martyn Harvey is published by Penzance Press. It has its own website www. TheSaucepanHat.co.uk and is available from good High Street bookshops and online via Amazon, Waterstones and Foyles at recommended price of £5.99. 10

Permian Monsters at the Horniman
252 million years ago, in a period called the Permian, life on Earth was dominated by extraordinary creatures. It was a time of fearsome sabre-toothed predators, giant insects and bizarre-looking sharks which ended with a mass extinction that destroyed 90% of all life, paving the way for the Earth’s next great rulers… the dinosaurs. Discover this mysterious time period in Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs, a fascinating, family-friendly exhibition travelling to the UK for the first time at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill. It opens on 15 February and runs until 1 November. From Dictodons to Dimetrodons, Ennatosaurus to Eotitanosuchus, the exhibition vividly brings the inhabitants of the Permian period back to life through fossil skeletons, full-size models and animatronics.Visitors can also sift through interactive dig pits, get creative in an art area, and see a collection of artwork offering a glimpse back in time through the eyes of award-winning palaeoartist, Julius Csotonyi. The Horniman will be hosting special activities linked to the exhibition during half term. Adult tickets cost £9, child tickets cost £5, and family tickets, including 4 tickets with up to 2 adults, cost £20. See www.horniman.ac.uk for details. Photo credit: Gondwana Studios

SEA LEGS
Ahoy shipmates! This February Half Term it’s time to earn your sea legs and take charge of London’s warship; HMS Belfast. Come on board for this new interactive family activity and complete fun tasks around the ship. It’s 1942 and the ship is ready to set sail. The only thing is we’ve misplaced where we are supposed to be going! We need your help to plot the course for the upcoming mission and make sure everything is shipshape and ready to go. Hop on the balance board to test how steady you’ll be on choppy seas. Figure out just how to feed 950 men on board with limited rations and even find out what kind of supplies you’ll need along the way. Get to grips with the science and skills needed to survive on HMS Belfast, solve nautical puzzles and discover for yourself what life was like for the ship’s company during the Second World War. Sea Legs features CBBC presenter Ben Shires, host of Officially Amazing and Match of the Day: Kick About. HMS Belfast is one of London’s most iconic landmarks. It has been moored on the River Thames for nearly half a century. No other vessel surviving in Britain has witnessed historic events of the same magnitude as HMS Belfast. She played a major role in the Second World War, Korean War and Cold War. Visit HMS Belfast, duck through hatches, climb ladders and explore all nine decks of this floating city. Sea Legs is part of a larger programme of family activities on board this half term. All activities are free with general admission. On Your Marks, Get Set… It’s nearly time for Sport Relief! Phoebe Lill, Schools Fundraising Manager for Sport Relief, suggests ten top tips to help schools and families warm up for the event. Sport Relief – which is coming up from 9–13 March – is a unique opportunity for children to get active, have fun, raise money and change lives. We’re very aware of all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes for an event like Sport Relief. Whether you’re a parent baking into the wee small hours or a teacher shepherding 30 reception children around the Sport Relief Mile, we’re hugely grateful for your efforts. Please rest assured that every penny you raise this March will be used to change countless lives, both here in the UK and worldwide. Sport Relief money funds amazing organisations that are tackling some of the most pressing issues of our time, including homelessness, mental health stigma and domestic abuse. The bonus is that taking part in Sport Relief is a great experience for children. It’s an exciting, memorable day when everyone comes together to make a difference through the power of sport. As well as being great fun, it’s a fantastic opportunity to develop children’s empathy and help them understand that they have the potential to take action and change things for the better.
To Kick Things Off…
You’ll find everything you need at sportrelief.com/schools/primary. Whether you’re a teacher, parent or pupil, get online and start exploring all the exciting resources on offer!
Top Ten Tips for Sport Relief Success
Keen to take part? Here are our top ten tips to make sure your children’s Sport Relief goes with a bang! 1. Get the date on the calendar. This year the Sport Relief fun and games are set to begin on Monday 9 March, culminating on Friday 13 March with TV programmes on CBBC and the live telethon in the evening. 2.
SOUTH LONDON FEBRUARY 2020.indd 14 Sport Relief FP.indd 1
Make sure children understand why they’re raising money for Sport Relief. There’s a short film on the Sport Relief website about Cameron, a boy who experienced homelessness and now campaigns to help other children. Talk together about Cameron’s story – check out the learning poster and activities for more information and ideas. Explain that the money you raise for Sport Relief will be used to help people worldwide and in your own community.
3. Look out for Sport Relief wristbands on sale. Just £1 to buy, there’s no simpler (and cooler!) way for children to show their support and kick-start fundraising. If you’re a teacher, why not sell wristbands in school? With our special offer, you can pay a deposit of £6.50 for a box of 20, then settle up later. (order from: www.sportrelief.com/ wristbands) 4. If your school is organising a Sport Relief healthy snack sale, start preparing tasty treats with the children. You’ll find a range of savoury and sweet recipes on the Sport Relief website – all easy to make and good for you. 5. Children across the country will be making a donation to dress up as their sporting hero or wear sports kit on Friday 13th. To save a last-minute panic on the day, start planning outfits in advance and prepare to accessorise with face paint, wigs, deely boppers, ribbons, cheerleading pom poms, medals… 6. Get creative with the children – there are lots of ideas and templates for things to make on the Sport Relief website. You could make bunting and flags to decorate your home or the classroom and corridors. Or how about using our template for a trainer-shaped money box to add excitement to collecting sponsorship money? 7. This year’s official Sport Relief school song is a catchy number called It’s Game On! Why not learn it with the children, singing along to the video on the Sport Relief website? If you want to take your music-making really seriously, you can download the lyrics and sheet music. You’ll even find a Makaton translation to get the children communicating through sign and song. 8. The Sport Relief Mile is the perfect excuse for everyone to get in shape together. If your school is planning to run the Mile this year, get your running shoes on and organise training sessions with the children in the run-up to the big event. 9. Help out on the day. If you’re a parent, find out what your school is going to do for Sport Relief and offer your support. Could you help to supervise the Sport Relief mile? Could you organise a healthy snack sale? Or just shake a bucket at the school gate? 10. At the end of Friday 13th, sit down with friends and family to watch a massive night of entertainment live on the BBC, knowing that together you’ve played an active part in changing people’s lives for the better. We hope the ideas here have inspired you to join in from 9–13 March and get set now to go, go, go! Have fun and a massive thank you for all your support. We’re excited to have you on the Sport Relief team.

New Junior School Building at St Dunstan’s College
Education News
A Tutor that Suits You
Primary Times spoke to Christina Lumley from Tutor Doctor. She told us, “We had a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. We wondered why parents had to adjust their family’s busy schedules and drive half way across town just to put their child in another classroom with other children… when in fact it was probably the classroom experience that their child was struggling with in the first place. At Tutor Doctor we offer in home 1-2-1 tutoring. We create a programme that is right for your child and then match a qualified tutor who suits your child’s personality and academic needs. We improve your child’s confidence and organisation skills, to help them be more effective and succeed in education.” Go along and meet some of the guys from Tutor Doctor at Tesco’s in Homesdale Road, Bromley on 15 February or call Christina on 020 8059 6574.
Development of St Dunstan’s College’s new Junior School, STEM building and Sixth Form Hub will begin in January. This is part of the College’s wider plans to redevelop the site and continue to offer world class education in state-of-the-art facilities. The new development will be sited adjacent to the existing historic headmaster’s house and be connected by a glass atrium. Built over two, three and four storeys, phase one will see demolition of some existing building and the construction of the new Junior School that will provide a stimulating learning environment - with specialist facilities for art, music and performance - whilst providing unrestricted access to age-appropriate sporting facilities across the elevated playing areas and the two MultiUse Games Areas (MUGAs). Phase two will see the delivery of the STEM Centre and Sixth Form Hub. These cutting-edge facilities will consolidate STEM subjects into a modern central space. The Hub will also provide university-style learning - including large independent study spaces, social areas and a café. Speaking about the upcoming building works, St Dunstan’s Headmaster, Mr Nicholas Hewlett, said, “The innovative design of the buildings and the emphasis on STEM, chimes with our original purpose that education at the College should be ‘in advance of its present time’. The project will have significant impact, not only on the education we provide here, but to our wider community, those we help to access our education, and those from across Lewisham who benefit from our facilities.”

Her insight and winning techniques have been developed over 25 years and have made Angela’s Swim School a major provider of lessons in London and the South East, with pools nearby in Dulwich and Lewisham. Angela told Primary Times, “My dream is to see all children being taught to swim properly, for them to be happy as they learn water skills and safety, grow in confidence and enjoy a physical workout.” To help children get the most from their ‘learn to swim’ journey, Angela has found a fresh way to engage them and has developed a badge programme. Angela’s Swim School, in partnership with The Swimstylers, offers a staged approach to

Wild In The City
Discover the secret lives of more than 30 extraordinary creatures that share the world’s cities. From red foxes sneaking rides on London buses to leopards prowling the backstreets of Mumbai, this book explores the clever ways animals have adapted to the urban environment and explains how you can help protect these wild neighbours. Crammed with buildings, traffic and people, urban spaces are the last place you’d expect to see wildlife. But all kinds of animals live alongside humans in the hidden corners of towns and cities – from teeny ants living under pavement cracks to pick-pocketing monkeys and spotted hyenas being fed by locals. Within the pages of this book, you’ll travel from city to city, across six different continents, meeting just some of these amazing animals. There are tips on where and when you might see them, what signs to look for and how you can help make cities more nature-friendly places. You’ll also see the conservation status of each animal, from those of least concern to species which are endangered. Wild in the City, written by Kate Baker and Lonely Planet Kids and illustrated by Gianluca Foli is suitable for ages 9 to 12. It is available online and from all good high street stores for £12.99. 20
