Lambeth Marks Holocaust Memorial Day

Lambeth’s 2019 Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony will take place on Sunday 27 January, and will return this year to the Lambeth Assembly Hall following its refurbishment. This event, to be attended by the Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Christopher Wellbelove, will remember, honour and share stories from those persecuted in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. The theme for 2019 set by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is “Torn from Home” and, in these turbulent times, prompts us to focus on all those who have had to flee their homes, the relevance of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides and our individual responsibility not to be bystanders to homelessness, hate crime and prejudice. The audience will hear from Holocaust survivor, George Vulkan. There will also be contributions from Dunraven School, from the Corpus Christi School Choir and from St Leonard’s Primary School. The event will run from 3pm to 4.30pm (doors open at 2.30pm) with closing words from the Leader of Lambeth Council, Cllr Lib Peck. Attendance at the Commemoration is free and all are welcome.

The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) have opened their newly refurbished library at their central London headquarters. The library is specially designed to house the collection of 23,000 children’s books used to support the work of the CLPE. It is decorated with three metre high artwork from some of the bestknown illustrators in the world, as well as new and emerging talent. During the fundraising campaign, people were able to sponsor a bookshelf, bookcase or alcove in the library, all of which now carry personal dedications. The literacy centre is rather fittingly housed in a former school near Waterloo station. Visit www.clpe.org.uk for further information. Louise Johns-Shepherd, Chief Executive told Primary Times, “Our Literacy Library, specially designed as a dedicated and permanent space for our collection of 23,000 children’s books will benefit over 5 million children. The amazing support we have had to enable this to happen is a testament to an industry that truly believes in the power of reading and books to transform lives.” Photo credit: Michael Thorn

Reading for enjoyment is vital to academic success however a recent survey found that 53% of teachers say they don’t have a library in their school. Puffin, part of publisher Penguin Random House, is partnering with the National Literacy Trust to launch a new programme that aims to inspire 13,000 primary school children across the UK to read for pleasure. The pilot programme, ‘Puffin World of Stories’ will equip 50 primary schools with the books, materials, training and resources they need to reinvigorate their school libraries to become vibrant hubs of creativity for pupils. Over the course of the academic year Puffin and the National Literacy Trust will work with the schools to understand and adapt to the challenges schools and children face. Each participating school has a high percentage of pupils receiving free school meals. South London, where Penguin Random House also has its offices, is one of the clusters in which the programme will run. Schools will receive 500 free Puffin books including favourites from Jacqueline Wilson and Roald Dahl, exciting resources, colourful materials and National Literacy Trust membership and library coordinator training. Another Seven Simple and Slightly Silly Stories by John Foley John Foley’s second collection of darkly witty short stories for adults and children, Another Seven Simple and Slightly Silly Stories, is now available, with 100% of the profits donated to Mencap, a UK charity working to improve the lives of those with learning disabilities. John Foley presents another set of seven charmingly quirky and remarkable fables, inspired by his time living in Hans Christian Andersen’s house in Copenhagen. In each magical tale, Foley brings new, wondrous worlds to life, transporting you to universes in which hotel lifts talk, puddles have feelings and reindeer learn to read. Each delightful story carries an important and surprising sting in its tale. Demonstrating the true magic of storytelling, Foley’s twists and turns imbue his extraordinary tales with wisdom, revealing a deeper meaning that’s anything but ‘silly’. In Foley’s own words, these stories have been written for ‘the young at heart aged 10 to 110’ and showcase the power of reading and storytelling to develop empathy, identification and learning, at any age. Another Seven Simple and Slightly Silly Stories is available direct from www. quizzicalworks.com at £7.50 (p&p included) and also from bookshops and Amazon. 12

Each year at this time, architects, designers and engineers bake and build their interpretation of a future city - all made from scrumptious gingerbread for the Museum of Architecture’s (MoA) annual Gingerbread City exhibition at the V&A. Between 8 December and 6 January visitors can wander round an incredible (and edible) minicity. Tickets are available from the V&A. To celebrate this year’s exhibition, families can have a go at building their own gingerbread houses at a series of workshops on various dates hosted by MoA. Tickets (minimum age 5) cost £30 per child, accompanying adult free. The workshop ticket covers the cost of making 1 gingerbread house for 1 child and their accompanying adult. All materials to make the gingerbread house will be supplied. The Gingerbread City has always been located in the South Kensington museum district and this year it will be built inside the V&A Creative Studio, close to the museum’s Architecture gallery. Listen Out for Owls The British Trust for Ornithology is asking the great British public to participate in a national study of Tawny Owls and their calling behaviour by listening out for them this autumn and winter. Tawny Owl populations are thought to be in decline and the species has recently been added to the Amber List of Birds of Conservation Concern. The Tawny Owl is arguably our best known owl. Even if you have never seen one you will probably recognise the ‘twit-twoo’ call uttered in harmony by a pair of Tawny Owls. The call of the female is an eerie ‘kewick’ and that of the male in reply is a shivering, ‘whoo’. Put together and you get ‘kewick-whoo’ or put another way, ‘twit-twoo’. Anyone can participate, and parents, teachers and children are asked to listen out for calling Tawny Owls from their garden, local park or piece of woodland. Register online at www.bto.org/owls or email gbw@bto.org for more information. The survey runs until 31 March 2019. You don’t have to commit to listening every week, but you’ll be providing valuable data by recording for as many weeks as you can. It is just as important, if you take part, to tell BTO if you don’t hear an owl. They will then know where there aren’t any owls and you can consider yourself a ‘zero hero’. 20
