Step 1: Choose the card (either a physical card or an eCard for people on the move)

Well Done Ebenezer

Children aged 5 to 13 years are invited to take part in the Leeds Castle BIG Story Writing Challenge by writing an original, fictional story of no more than 900 words. There are two age groups, 5-9 and 10-13. The closing date for entries is 6 March. This year’s theme is ‘One Golden Day’. It’s inspired by an event that took place 500 years ago in 1520 when Henry VIII stayed at Leeds Castle with 5,000 of his courtiers. He was on his way to meet the King of France for a massive jamboree that has since become known as ‘The Field of Cloth of Gold’. Leeds Castle was a royal palace at the time and it was in a key position between London and Dover. Just think what your mum or dad’s reaction might be if you invited a couple of friends for tea and the fridge was empty. Think what it must have been like for the stewards of the castle with 5000 coming to stay and one of them was the King who was known to get pretty grumpy if things weren’t just right. We haven’t even mentioned all the horses and dogs or the luggage – no Easyjet luggage allowance for Henry VIII. Oh and fridges hadn’t been invented yet! Let your imagination go wild on a theme of ‘One Golden Day’.Your story can be set in the past, present or future it’s up to you! You’ll have the chance to win some great prizes! The 20 talented finalists will be invited to the Grand Awards Ceremony on 29 May 2020. Join Clare Balding, one of the judges, in the Castle for this very special day when the two overall winners will be announced. The winning story from each category will win: • A stay at Knight’s Glamping • Tickets to the Fireworks Spectacular 2020 • A hamper of fun prizes • The full collection of Clare Balding’s children’s books • Publication of the top stories on ‘Fonetti’ – the world’s first listening book shop.

To submit your story visit www.leeds-castle.com/storywriting Primary Times are media partners of Leeds Castle for the competition. So, go ahead and good luck! 12

academic potential but also develop their human potential. The Cedars’ vision, then, is of boys who always give of their best, who have a wide range of interests and a wide circle of friends, who are at ease in any surroundings because they are at ease within themselves, who have the good sense and integrity to know when to make a stand and the courage to follow through when necessary, who are able to make sacrifices for a worthwhile cause, who have the self-discipline to moderate the use of the good things around them, who share the deepest values of their parents, who have learnt to value cheerful service and who have come to realise that the secret of true happiness lies in self-giving love.

Education News

‘Education in the Large Sense’

The recent canonisation of John Henry Newman by Pope Francis has refocused attention on Newman’s vision of education as articulated in The Idea of a University and other of his writings. Newman spoke of ‘education, in the large sense’ and it is that wider view of education to which we are committed at The Cedars School. Schools are, first and foremost, academic institutions that exist for the cultivation of the intellect. But schools should also partner with parents in bringing about a shared vision of human flourishing. At The Cedars, we see every boy as a ‘joint project’ involving family and school. The goal of that partnership is to help boys become great young men who not only achieve their

Ark Evelyn Grace Academy Receives Breakfast Boost

To celebrate 20 years of supporting school breakfast clubs, Kellogg’s has awarded Ark Evelyn Grace Academy in Lambeth £1,000 to enhance its breakfast club provision and help feed children in the morning. Ark Evelyn Grace Academy was selected to receive this boost as more and more schools are struggling to find the budget to fund this service for their pupils. Breakfast clubs help with everything from attendance and attainment to alleviating hunger and providing preschool care. A survey from Kellogg’s suggested that 68 per cent of teachers believe pupils would struggle to concentrate in class without their breakfast club. Tim Dainty, Principal at Ark Evelyn Grace Academy, told Primary Times, “We are so grateful to receive this generous donation. We are now able to purchase more exciting spreads for our bagel bar and we look forward to running special end of term breakfasts for our students. These resources will help us to provide our breakfast club services for children and their families.” For more information about Ark Evelyn Grace Academies, please visit www.evelyngraceacademy.org.

25 Nov ‘19 - 2 Feb ‘20

There are lots of quick and easy ways to have fun and raise money. You and the children could: • Wear sports kit for the day in return for a small fee. • Sell Sport Relief wristbands in school. • Organise a Sport Relief Mile and join thousands across the UK as they get sponsored to walk, run, hop, scoot or swim. Or why not think big for Sport Relief 2020? Here’s how Valence School in Westerham, Kent, raised the amazing total of over £3,500 last Sport Relief! Fundraising Superheroes Valence School caters for students aged 4 to 19 who have physical disabilities and complex medical needs. Long-time supporters of Sport Relief, back in 2018 the primary school was transformed into a world of superheroes and imaginary vehicles for a sponsored Mile with a difference. Children and staff arrived for the day dressed up as their favourite superheroes and were divided into houses for a creative challenge. Armed with cardboard, sticky tape, glue and a wheelchair, older and younger children worked together with imagination and ingenuity to create everything from a yellow transformer to a red plane. Excitement mounted as the vehicles approached the start line for the Sport Relief Valence Mile. With Captain America running alongside Batman and Wonder Woman pushing Spiderman, the Mile wasn’t as easy as expected. But with some brave work by the superheroes, all teams made it to the finish. As always, Sport Relief proved a fantastic experience for all involved, bringing the school community together to share in fun, worthwhile activity.

Disney’s The Lion King has launched a brand new video library to accompany its educational programme. Ten short films have been made in order to help pupils prepare for their theatre experience, as well as deepen their knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in theatre making. Since the 1999 UK premiere in London, The Lion King has entertained over 16 million theatregoers and remains the West End’s best-selling stage production and sixth longestrunning West End musical of all time. Over one million pupils have already experienced Disney’s landmark musical through its award-winning education programme. Developed by teachers, the programme is fully curriculum-linked to support subjects in Key Stages 2 – 4 and is easily adaptable. In addition to the new video library, the educational programme also includes lesson plans that can inspire crosscurricular learning in English, art and design, music and PSHE and citizenship. The Circle of Life Award empowers students to create their own social action project to benefit their community, and workshops (available to groups who have booked to attend a performance of The Lion King) give students the rare opportunity to explore the world of the production and learn content from the show. To explore a range of lesson plans, behind the scenes videos, a citizenship award programme, workshops and more, please visit www.lionkingeducation.co.uk. Photo credit: ®Disney
