Win School Equipment and a Class Sleepover
This Easter, Aquafresh are kicking-off the season with the launch of its Inventors Academy competition, giving schools the opportunity to win £1,000 worth of equipment and a whole class sleepover at the Science Museum.
Fostering New Starts with Chrysalis Care
However you acknowledge it, Easter is undoubtedly a time of birth, new beginnings and fresh starts. As school holidays also feature, it’s a time for making wonderful family memories. Maybe you have shared some fantastic Easter experiences and with room for one or two more in your camp, you have wondered if fostering is for you? That’s a great start. The founders of Chrysalis Care took the very same step, more than 35 years ago, becoming a fostering family along with their three young daughters. Fifteen years later, in 1997, they created Chrysalis Care, a family-run fostering agency and, over more than 20 years, have helped hundreds of families share memorable experiences with children and young people who really need a fresh start. Foster carers are based across London, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and benefit from expert 24-hour advice, guidance, training and support. If a new beginning is on your mind and you want to join in transforming lives through fostering children and young people, contact Chrysalis Care to speak with a friendly and knowledgeable member of staff. Call 020 8298 2800, email info@chrysaliscare.org or visit www. chrysaliscarefostering.org.
Keep your Children Active with Everyone Active Being physically active every day is important for the healthy growth and development of children of all ages. To maintain a basic level of health, children need to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. This should range from moderate activity such as walking to school, scooting or playing in the playground to vigorous activity such as swimming, running and gymnastics. Keeping your children active over the Easter holidays is easy with Everyone Active’s ‘Active Kids’ programme. Everyone Active offers a wide range of activities for children aged from four months to 10 years. Sessions run both during term time and in the school holidays, with the emphasis on having fun! From football coaching, gymnastics, dance and trampolining to swimming lessons, soft play sessions to under-fives ‘Active Antz’, there are plenty of activities for your little ones to enjoy. To find out more about children’s activities and holiday camps, visit www.everyoneactive.com or speak with staff at your nearest Everyone Active centre.

Open to every primary school within the UK, the competition encourages teachers to focus on the importance of oral hygiene linked to the National Curriculum, whilst bringing fun to the subject with an invention competition. This engaging activity has been created to support the brand’s new Aquafresh Advance 9-12 range, whilst helping to educate children on the importance of good oral hygiene. What can UK kids do to make it more fun? Aquafresh has the answer! Children will be tasked with creating their very own innovation to make brush time more enjoyable. Using a simple entry form, parents will then be asked to upload their child’s invention to the Aquafresh Inventors Academy microsite, www. aquafreshinventorsacademy.com giving their child the chance to win an exclusive sleepover at the Science Museum. Teachers are encouraged to download fully comprehensive lesson plans, presentations and materials at www. aquafreshinventorsacademy.com to share with their pupils and get them excited about good oral hygiene and brushing their teeth. The competition is open for entries for children between the ages of 7 and 11 until 31 May, so get brushing-up on your funvention lessons and ideas following the Easter break.

Schoolchildren Reuse Art at the Tate Modern
What’s crochet got to do with computers? In February around 120 pupils from London primary schools explored just that question at the Tate Modern as part of the Tate Exchange programme. Nine and ten year old pupils from six south west London schools – Crown Lane Primary, Henry Cavendish Primary, Hill Mead Primary, Immanuel and St Andrew CE Primary, St Andrews CE Primary School and Stockwell Primary – were involved in the project. Working with London Connected Learning Centre, which supports schools to use digital technologies to enhance learning, the students responded to Tate Modern’s collection as part of an investigation into reusing, remaking and remixing. The children explored the similarities between computational thinking, programming and craft, such as crochet and knitting, through hands-on making using digital technologies and recycled materials. This year’s theme was ‘production’ and the pupils were encouraged to think about production and consumption and how digital technologies and innovation have changed the process of designing and making. Pupils looked at how the materials and processes are used in the works on display in the Tate gallery, why they have been used and how this might change the way they see the art. London Connected Learning Centre is a Tate Exchange Associate and it is the second year it has involved London schools in the programme, find out more at www.londonclc.org.uk. To find out more about Tate Exchange visit www.tate. org.uk/tateexchange.

Beast at The Colour House Theatre
Watch as your best loved fairytales come together in a new vibrant theatre experience at The Colour House Theatre in the picturesque riverside setting of Merton Abbey Mills. Beast invites audiences to question what they already know about the most famous fairytales and suspend all belief as they watch an entirely new story unfold. Rapunzel is left confused by The Royal Soothsayer’s latest prophecy that she will marry a beast. She longs to be with Jack – who’s good at climbing things – but her father will never allow her to marry a penniless nobody. Who will the young princess choose? Things aren’t quite as they seem as Auntie Bertha, the witch, gets involved and casts some spells of her own. Who will they all end up with? Beast teaches an important lesson about being happy with who you are. The colourful play is written and directed by former Head of Radio Drama at the BBC, Gordon House, and every production will begin with a recorded introduction from Dame Judi Dench. This Easter Holiday show runs from Wednesday 11 – Sunday 15 April. There are two performances a day at 11am and 2.30pm and tickets are £12 for adults and £8 for children. Find out more and make a booking at www.colourhousetheatre.co.uk.

The Big Bluebell Watch
The Big Bluebell Watch will return this spring and, once again, the Woodland Trust needs your help to spot the UK’s bluebells. Last year they collected 48,200 bluebell records across the UK and this year, with your help, the Trust hopes to discover even more. Last year’s records showed that native bluebells are going strong. 80% of the bluebells recorded were native. The data was used by a variety of organisations and scientists to support their work. Get involved this year and record your local bluebell sightings from 2 April until 31 May.You can also help by working to prevent the spread of non-native bluebells and protect the native species in the wild. But remember – never pull up bluebells in the wild, even if you suspect they are non-native. Native bluebells are protected by law and it can be difficult to tell the difference. Be part of something bigger. Support the Woodland Trust and help create, protect and restore habitat for bluebells. To keep up to date with the Big Bluebell Watch, why not sign up to receive email updates and find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk.

Brain Training with Martial Smarts
When parents think of martial arts, they think of many things: selfdefence, fitness and discipline to name just a few. But very few are aware that one of the most valuable benefits of martial arts is brain development. Over ten years ago, Matt Jardine, a fulltime teacher specialising in teaching martial arts to school children participated in a brain study aiming to determine if the neurology of black belts is more advanced than those without a martial arts education. It is. Fuelled by the findings of the study, Jardine set out on his journey of

Education News The Backpack Project
Mary’s Meals supporters have gifted an incredible 500,000 school bags to impoverished children through The Backpack Project. The school-feeding charity began transporting lorry-loads of used school bags in 2005. Since then, the project continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of children and parents from all over the UK, as well as support from churches, schools, clubs, workplaces and other organisations. The backpacks, which are filled with educational and hygiene items, are given to children in schools in Malawi where Mary’s Meals are provided. The 500,000th backpack was handed out during a visit to Junior Primary schools Chigubudu and Ngabu, in the south of Malawi. The Backpack Project is particularly well supported by young people as part of school recycling projects which invite them to bring in their old schoolbags at the end of the final term each year. Backpacks are filled with educational items, toiletries and clothes to ensure that every child has the resources necessary for their education. Alongside the school meals provided, Mary’s Meals is supporting children’s learning across the world. Mary’s Meals is Primary Times’ charity of the year. They currently provide life-changing meals to 1,230,171 children in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Where Mary’s Meals is provided, there is a rise in rates of enrolment, attendance and academic performance. To find out more or to donate, visit www. marysmeals.org.uk.

The competition, organised by Explore Learning has been running for ten years and has inspired hundreds of thousands of children across the UK to put pen to paper. The competition is open to all children aged 4-14 and this year’s theme is ‘Heroes’. Children are invited to write a 500 word story all about a hero. This could be an everyday hero or a superhero. The winner will be surprised at a school assembly by David Walliams who will present them with their trophy, a trip to Disneyland Paris for their family and £500 of books for their school! David told Primary Times, “It is a real privilege to be named judge for this year’s National Young Writers’ Awards and I am so looking forward to reading what the brilliant brains of our country’s children come up with. To write is such a wonderful, creative outlet for people of all ages and competitions just 24

Kids Go Wild! #lionopera
Leading young British composer James Olsen has joined forces with three inspirational animal charities – Born Free, The Donkey Sanctuary and LionAid - to present the second instalment of his children’s #lionopera initiative – ‘One of Our Lions is Missing!’ #lionopera follows the comic adventures of a lion and a donkey living in a monastery and is based on the medieval legend of Saint Jerome. ‘One of our Lions is Missing!’ follows on from the successful first instalment ‘One of our Brothers is a Lion!’, performed in 2017. Primary schools up and down the country can signup free of charge to stage their own production this summer. A range of digital support resources will be provided by Olsen Verlag publishers and supported by the partner charities, which means that #lionopera can be performed by schools with little or no musical capability. The project offers cross-curricular learning opportunities by providing schools with tie-in educational materials for Key Stage 2 science as well as the means to fulfil National Curriculum requirements in English, music and religious education. It also delivers a wider message, encouraging children to explore the global issues faced by wild and domestic animals. For more information visit www. olsenverlag.com/lionopera

A recent poll found that one in four primary school children could not identify a blackbird or robin red breast. Furthermore, over half were unable to name three of Britain’s most common garden species – the great tit, starling and chaffinch. Brighton-based author, illustrator and nature enthusiast Vicky Woodgate believes now is a great time to learn more about the birds around us. After the success of Urban Jungle, Vicky’s new book, A World of Birds, takes readers on a flying visit round the world, scouring the seven continents for the biggest, brightest and best birds on the planet. A World of Birds perfectly captures the brilliance of the bird world with each chapter taking you to a new continent and introducing birds from hummingbirds to hawks, and parrots to penguins. With a vintage travelogue feel, vibrant artwork and bite-sized facts and annotations, the book will appeal to wildlife lovers of all ages, big and small. This book may just be the thing to unlock your child’s interest in nature and the birds that share our wonderful planet.
