Here in the office we are getting egg-stremely egg-cited at the thought of all that chocolate coming our way. We’re hoping that it will be an egg-ceptional eggstravaganza..... No eggs-aggeration! March - May is a busy period with lots happening. Don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 31 March. Home-made presents/cards always go down well... Bad news for mothers this year though as the clocks go forward on 31 March so one hour less to celebrate. Then Easter Weekend is 19-22 April. As you can tell our office love chocolate so that’s one we’ll be getting egg-cited about. Looking up dates we came across National Teachers’ Day on 7 May. It says “a day for honouring teachers and recognising the lasting contributions they make to our lives.” Time to make your teacher feel special. As usual we have lots of competitions to enter in this issue. Entries can be sent by post to the address to the left or they can be emailed to competitions@ primarytimes.biz but please always mention the competition you are entering and include your personal details so that we can send you your prize if you win one. Have an egg-cellent (sorry!) holiday and we’ll be back on 13 May.

Rugby’s Biggest Club Game

Barnes Children’s Literature Festival

London’s largest dedicated children’s literature festival returns to Barnes on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May, attracting some of the UK’s best authors and illustrators for a fun-filled weekend for children of all ages. Led by UK Laureate Lauren Child, this year’s programme looks even more exciting than last year. The Schools’ Festival opens on Wednesday 8 May with an Education Programme consisting of three days of specially curated, curriculumlinked sessions which are provided for free to pupils in all state primary schools in London. This year 4,500 children will have the opportunity to engage with their favourite authors and illustrators. Highlights of the festival itself include the London premieres of the outdoor theatre performance of The Lost Words: Seek Find Speak, based on the acclaimed illustrated book by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris and a hilarious new interactive show from the Roald Dahl Estate. The Literature Festival also provides dedicated programming for families with children with special and extra needs including inclusive storytelling with Rose Robbins and Vanessa Woolf and yoga-telling sessions. The Festival is centred around Barnes Green beside the muchloved duck pond. Tickets are due to go on sale on 16 March. For a full programme and more information, please visit www.barneskidslitfest.org.

Helping an Anxious Child

Hannah Lashite, Child Play Specialist at Bupa Cromwell Hospital, has given Primary Times an insight into helping children and young people with anxiety. “As a parent, it’s hard to watch your child worry over situations that don’t seem frightening to us, but these situations can feel genuinely threatening to them. This apprehension can create a nervous system response, resulting in chemical changes in the body. This is anxiety. Hospital environments in particular can be sources of stress for children. If children are anxious about coming in to have surgery, it’s important to understand the source of the anxiety. A pre-surgery visit to the hospital may help the child become more familiar with the environment. The child might feel unsure about what is going to happen and overwhelmed with all of the different things they are hearing. For some children and young people these feelings of anxiety and stress can occur in many aspects of daily life. Some techniques that parents may find useful to help them include breaking the task or event down into smaller steps, talking about what is going to happen in the run up to a task or event, celebrating any efforts to tackle anxiety, giving a choice where appropriate and using deep breathing and guided imagery for older children.” For more information, please visit www.bupacromwellhospital.com. 4

The Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final on 1 June is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar and this year it makes history by moving into June. A battle between the two best club sides in England, the Final will feature a host of worldclass players in front of a massive crowd at Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby. The Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final is about far more than the 80 minutes of action. The Fan Village is unmissable and keeps everyone entertained before and after the match. This is a day of top-level sport for all the family with most supporters turning up early to take in the unforgettable atmosphere at one of the most iconic stadiums in the world – this occasion is about so much more than the rugby. Last season the action on and off the pitch was unforgettable with Saracens reclaiming their Championship crown in a pulsating clash with Exeter Chiefs. Stephen Jones, Rugby Correspondent of the Sunday Times told Primary Times, “The Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final is one of the highlights of the season. It’s a trophy you can only win with the men you have been working beside day after day and they become blood brothers.” It is a special occasion, showcasing everything that’s good about club rugby and totally different from an England match at Twickenham. It’s also a brilliant family day out. We’ve seen five different winners in the last seven years and recently one of the finals went into extra time so it is hard to predict what will happen on 1 June this year. Find out more at www.premiershiprugby.com/final.

Duchess of Cambridge Visits Evelina

The Duchess of Cambridge has become Patron of Evelina London Children’s Hospital, ahead of its 150th anniversary. The announcement was made as the Duchess visited Evelina London with The Duke of Cambridge. During the visit they spoke to a group of parents about the care their children have received at Evelina. The hospital is preparing to celebrate its 150th anniversary this year, which will be marked with events for patients, families and staff. The Duchess of Cambridge kicked off the celebrations by helping patients who have been treated at the hospital to complete a commemorative artwork and to unveil a special anniversary banner marking Evelina London’s 150 years. The Hospital was founded in 1869 as Evelina Hospital for Sick Children by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, whose wife, Evelina, died along with their baby in childbirth. Now, Evelina London cares for children and young people from before birth, throughout childhood and into adult life. The hospital provides a range of services to children across south London and south east England. For more information about Evelina, visit www.evelinalondon.nhs.uk.

King Horace’s eldest son Howard has fallen in love with the beautiful Cinderella. But she has disappeared, having been kidnapped by Rumpelstiltskin, an “unutterably evil” goblin. Rumpelstiltskin is also threatening to seize the Queen’s new baby, unless the King or Queen can guess the goblin’s name. Will the Royal Soothsayer be able to save the day? Will Prince Howard be reunited with Cinderella? And is Rumpelstiltskin really as “unutterably evil” as he says he is? The company that brought you The Princess & the Toad, and Beast! makes a welcome Easter return to Colour House Theatre. Book now to see this fun-packed musical – or risk being turned into a tuna fish sandwich by the feisty Witch! Colour House Theatre is a wonderfully intimate venue for a child to enjoy what might be his or her first experience of live theatre. The actors engage with the audience throughout the play, and the audience themselves often provide some of the biggest laughs. Virtually every weekend throughout the year there is a children’s play performed, twice a day. Tickets can be acquired at the Box Office on the day, but with only 70 seats for each performance it is wise to book beforehand on Colour House’s website www.colourhousetheatre.co.uk.

Unpack all our city has to offer with the London Curriculum World of Work Trails and take the family out to explore some exciting areas of London this spring and summer. Last year, the Mayor’s London Curriculum team launched a series of World of Work trails for schools and families. The aim is to inspire children to start thinking about careers in London and what’s on offer in this brilliant city.

Unpack all that London has to offer with our London Curriculum Family Explorer and World of Work Trails.

The trails cover different areas of London – Southwark, Covent Garden, Old Street, Shoreditch and Stratford, with Brixton coming soon! Each trail has a different theme and includes all kinds of activities and information about types of work that children might do when they’re older. Children will learn about jobs from the past, discover the work people do today and imagine what work might be like in the future. The London Curriculum is a fun way of teaching young people about the city using London as a classroom. Schools in London are already enjoying free primary and secondary teaching resources. With these trails, parents and carers can join in too. Find out more at www.london.gov.uk/worldof-work-trails and www.london.gov.uk/london-curriculum
