News Harlequins Fly into US Market Paul Lasike, former Utah Warrior Captain and NFL player was signed for Harlequins earlier this summer as the club made a bold move into the US market. Lasike made a huge impression on the international scene in June when USA beat Scotland 30-29 in Texas. His powerful defence was a major factor in his country’s first victory over a major international rugby nation. Lasike, who spent three years in the NFL before returning to rugby with Utah Warriors, told Quins TV, “Playing rugby in the US and representing them at international level has been an awesome experience. But it was an honour to be asked to join such a prestigious club as Harlequins and I am delighted to be joining the Club.” Paul Gustard, Harlequins’ Head of Rugby said, “I am delighted Paul is joining us for the start of a new era at Harlequins. He is a player who has enormous game-changing potential and I am very excited and pleased that Paul and his young family have made the decision to come to be part of our journey.” The Harlequins will play Bath on 15 September at 3pm at Twickenham Stoop Stadium. Season tickets and more are available at tickets.quins.co.uk.

The Hardest Path Author and teacher, Matt Jardine, set out on an ancient Japanese pilgrimage, partly as a respite from the 9-5 and partially to search for answers to some of life’s big questions. Why are we here? What should we be doing with our lives? Where is the TV remote? During the pilgrimage, he learnt Buddhist wisdom that is not only useful for coping with life’s significant challenges, but also with the smaller day-today niggles that beset every parent. Matt told Primary Times, “As much as we love our children and family life, there is no denying that parenting can at times be laborious, tiresome and downright stressful. One of the most important things I learnt on the pilgrimage that could help parents is to make a daily habit of taking a personal ‘time out’. When family life gets crazy it’s easy to lose ourselves amidst the noise, chaos and the many drop off and pick ups we have to do. Every day, it’s vital to take a half hour to sit quietly, alone, with no interruptions. Many parents protest that they haven’t enough time already, let alone adding a further ‘time out’ to their schedule. To which I answer – ‘FIND THE TIME!’ You must do it not only for your sanity, to recharge and reset yourself, but also for your family’s sanity. If you are stressed, then not only do you feel terrible but so do they. Stress spreads like wildfire.” Matt has published a book, The Hardest Path, documenting his path and discoveries, which is available on Amazon.

A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic

Family Theatre Three Sat Under the Banyan Tree This Autumn at Polka Theatre, you can introduce your family to the ancient Panchatantra tales, India’s answer to the Aesop Fables. Near the foothills of the Himalayas, three orphans open a magical book under a Banyan tree. They were told the book wouldn’t give them answers but they’d learn from it. They stir a pot of milk and three stories of the forest rise from its pages. Stories of headstrong crows, old lions and devious jackals come vibrantly to life, with masks, movement and music. Polka Theatre is delighted to be co-producing with Tara Arts the first-ever stage adaptation of The Panchatantra in the UK. The show is written by Shamser Sinha, directed by Jatinder

Matthew Warchus’ big-hearted, smash hit production of Charles Dickens’ immortal classic A Christmas Carol returns to The Old Vic this Christmas, with previews from 27 November, joyously adapted for the stage by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). Last year, The Observer described it as “a love song to Christmas, to the redeeming power of theatre and, not least, to The Old Vic itself.” Filling the auditorium to the brim with mince pies, music and merriment, the unique staging immerses the audience in this uplifting story for everyone aged 8+. Scrooge is played by Stephen Tompkinson. The show involves bell-ringing, Christmas carols, lots of flying food and even more snow. Last year’s reviews painted a wonderful picture. The Independent said, “Matthew Warchus’s magnificent staging provides everything you might want from a theatrical adaptation of Dickens’s timeless (and never more timely) morality tale.” And the Guardian said “Jack Thorne’s superb retelling mines the ghosts of Scrooge’s past in a timely production brimming with love and affection.” The Radio Times asked, “Dare I suggest it, it could even rival that obvious pinnacle of Dickens’ adaptations, The Muppet Christmas Carol?”

Verma and designed by Claudia Mayer. Playing on the Main Stage from Friday 28 September to Sunday 21 October, The Panchatantra is ideal for ages 7+. For tickets call 020 8543 4888 or visit www.polkatheatre.com.

Starting to look at secondary schools? We give you the lowdown on what to do. Choosing a secondary school is one of the most important decisions you are going to make because it’s likely to have a huge impact on your child’s future, way beyond the school gates. There’s some essential ‘homework’ to be done before you make that all important choice and you must make sure you know the deadlines for applying via your local authority. For some, it won’t be an issue, as catchment area rules determine your first or other choices, decided by postcode or feeder school. However, for those of you who can choose, the task can seem a daunting one. To help you through the process, follow our tips for some forward planning and get the most out of a school open day.

Talk to as many pupils and parents as you can manage on the tour for maximum feedback. Don’t forget to take in the atmosphere and environment of the school, to get a feel for whether your child would be happy in these surroundings.

Students in action

As you’re on the school tour, observe the children in school, as they will often be a great indicator of a school’s ethos. You’ll get to see how children treat each other and how they interact within the classroom and corridors. Are they happy? Do they seem confident and animated? Are teachers welcoming and friendly, and are you getting the feeling of a warm, open attitude?

Choosing your new School

Choosing your New School

Make a Shortlist of Schools

Firstly, make a shortlist of the schools that your child could attend by looking at nearby local authority’s websites or visit www.education.gov.uk. Make sure you check their admission rules carefully to ensure your child is eligible for a place. You also need to be happy that your child can travel to school easily and that siblings, if relevant, could go to the same school. After that, it’s time to take a look at the facts and figures to make a comparison on paper.

Do Your Homework

It will help if you do some online research of your own. All schools have to have a website. Among other things, this has to include details of the curriculum, admission criteria, behaviour policy, special educational needs policy, disability policy, links to Ofsted reports, links to performance data, the school’s latest key stage attainment and progress measures. But the other things on the website may be at least as important. Does the school feel an exciting place to be? Yes schools can be exciting; maybe they’ve changed a bit since our time. Is there a regular newsletter and is there lots going on? Does whoever writes the website sound enthusiastic about the school? If they’re not, you may not be either.

Head to the Open Day

The Head teacher’s talk

Don’t miss out on the Head teacher’s talk, usually given at specified times on open days/evenings. You’ll find out what priorities and emphasis the Head gives to various aspects of their school, and will be able to see if these aspirations match your family’s own. The Head should come across as genuine, inspiring and bursting with pride for both school and pupils, as well as being very clear about the school’s achievements and goals.

Expectations for behaviour

Once you’re satisfied with your shortlist and you’ve done your homework, it’s time to do the most important thing of all and visit the schools. Nothing beats going to see the school for yourself, so get the most out of your visit with our tips and ideas.

Make sure you query the levels of discipline that are imposed, such as the consequences for late/absent work, unruly behaviour and the uniform code. Feel free to raise serious disciplinary matters such as bullying and how it is handled. The responses should give you a good indication of what is tolerated at the school.

The grand tour

Equal opportunities for all

Most open days will feature a pupil-led tour. Ask lots of questions and you’ll hear all sorts of interesting things from your friendly guide that don’t feature in the prospectus.

School should bring out the best in every child. If yours requires additional help in any areas of learning, ask about the support available to enable them to reach their potential. Query how students are monitored to ensure their learning 3 Sept - 7 Oct 2018

Choosing your new School

stays on track and they don’t ‘slip under the radar’ and fall behind their peers. Ask about communication systems that are in place to ensure teachers and parents can work together to be a constant support to your child.

Life outside the classroom Essential learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Look out for interesting extra-curricular activity posters on the noticeboards. If your child likes sports but isn’t an ‘A’ team candidate, will they still get to participate? If there are after school clubs, check what they are and when they take place.

Peace of mind

The switch to secondary school is a big one and communication will be key. It is important to know how to contact staff if you have a problem or concern. Find out how contact details such as teacher names and emails are provided, and whether the first point of contact should be via telephone or email. It’s important to see how easy it is to contact school staff in case of an emergency. Information about good pastoral care should be plentiful as it’s an essential ingredient for a happy school life.

It’s an open day, so keep an open mind

Remember this is about your child, not you. Try not to be influenced by your own educational experience as it may not be relevant. Find out what your child really thinks and don’t hesitate to take advice from trusted teachers who you feel know your child best – you may be surprised by what they tell you. In the end, trust your instincts, find the right environment for them to be happy, then sit back and watch them flourish.

Kingston Grammar School

Kingston Grammar School is a leading independent day school for children age 11-18 in South West London, and one of the most successful co-educational schools in the country. The main points of entry are at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Admission is by selection on academic merit. For all entries there is an examination and interview. For 16+ entry, predicted GCSE grades (or international equivalent) are also considered. KGS has a long tradition of developing individual talent and encouraging high aspirations. The curriculum is designed to challenge expectations and to engage students in a love of learning. Students are bright and enthusiastic. Their joy in life and spirit of curiosity makes education at the school a real pleasure. Inspirational teaching and a deep commitment to pastoral care means that students grow in confidence and understanding, and individual talents and creativity are able to flourish. The school has a strong sporting legacy which includes 26 appearances at the Olympic Games and alumni such as Olympic gold medallists James Cracknell OBE and Sophie Hosking MBE. At KGS their aim is to ensure that all students leave with the right skills and knowledge to ensure their lives are successful and happy. Their pastoral support is underpinned by the Ac Laetari (‘Be Happy’) wellbeing programme, which encompasses PSHE education in all year groups, tutor time activities and external speakers. KGS are rightly proud of their pastoral provision and it is widely acknowledged to be one of the best in any school in the UK. An ISI report stated, “The high levels of achievement derive significantly from the impact of a culture of all-round accomplishment for all pupils that is effectively promoted by senior leadership and governors. Pupils are determined to live up to the school motto ‘Work well and be happy’, and in this they are conspicuously successful.” Book your visit to KGS this autumn. They have an 11+ Information Evening on Thursday 27 September, an Open Day on Saturday 29 September and a Sixth Form Open Evening on Monday 8 October. For more information, please visit www.kgs.org.uk.

Choosing your new School

Burntwood School

Choosing a new school for your children can be a daunting experience. It is important to make a careful analysis of the breadth of curriculum on offer, whether the school has a good record with regard to examination success and whether progression for the youngsters to Higher Education is the norm. A substantial Sixth Form is important, as it can offer a wider range of subjects and more flexibility of subject choice for a young person. A good school will also provide a wide range of sporting and extracurricular activities as well as excellent dance, drama and music teaching. It is important that every child is treated as an individual and that the school works in partnership with the parents to encourage the very best from the young person. At Burntwood, they encourage young women to be articulate, thoughtful individuals who are able to express their opinions whilst also being able to listen to and consider the views of others. It is their view that girls benefit greatly from a single sex education where they are free to develop and mature without the pressures of the presence of boys. Of course, this is not necessarily the best choice for every young woman and Burntwood always recommend visiting a variety of styles of schools in order to compare and contrast and be secure that the school selected will best meet the needs of the young person. Whatever your choice of school, at Burntwood they wish you every success in supporting your child through this important transition. For more information, please visit www. burntwoodschool.com.

YEAR 7 OPEN DAYS Burntwood is an oversubscribed Academy for Girls which proudly holds a CPD Platinum Mark, the EQualities Award, the International School Award, and has UNICEF Rights Respecting School Gold status.

Bursaries at King’s College School

King’s has a history of enabling bright young minds from every background to access the school. However, enabling a move from their state primary school to the new opportunities of an independent education in 20 acres of space, in the heart of Wimbledon, is about more than offering bursaries. It is about making the move right for each child. The school’s wish to appeal to the 92% of pupils in state primary schools, as well as boys in traditional prep schools, was the driving force behind opening their lower school for Years 7 and 8 in 2016. About half their lower school boys joined from primary schools, and they encourage any bright boy who would like to go to King’s to feel that everyone at the school will do all they can to welcome him. Their pastoral care is nationally famed, while the range of drama, music, sport and other activities is incredibly exciting, meaning that although pupils do phenomenally well in public exams, this is not at the expense of their wider interests or their own humanity. With many boys gaining bursarial support at 11 and 13, and girls (and boys) able to seek support with fees in the sixth form, it could be time to consider King’s for your child. Explore Learning delivers extra tuition in centres nationwide. Keira is 10 years old and she has attended Explore Learning for over a year. Explore has helped with her confidence and has helped her to get to where she wants to be in her class. She feels happier knowing that she has already seen the work before, which gives her a real confidence boost. Her parents would recommend any other parent to Explore. Primary Times recently talked to Keira and her parents about her experience of Explore, “Explore isn’t what you think tuition would be like, instead it is made to be fun and enjoyable for all children, from every background. The Centre is inclusive and all children are treated equally. The tutors and the service motivate the children who perhaps wouldn’t usually want to go and do extra work. Keira, for example, would always come out saying how glad she was that she has been that day. The tutors support Keira to develop skills to progress in her learning. They encourage her to challenge herself, step out of her comfort zone and to be independent whilst giving her the extra support she requires. Keira enjoys the reward systems that are in place to encourage her to work hard and achieve her goals, and when she gets a certificate it makes her feel on top of the world.” Explore Learning has award-winning maths and English tuition centres nationwide. Get in touch today by calling 03301 243 802 to discuss your child’s needs and to book a free trial. Alternatively, please visit www.explorelearning.co.uk.

The bright and airy one-storey villa has a charming open living space with a joined living and dining area with large windows looking out towards the sea. The compact but well-equipped kitchen is all that you could need during your holiday. The main double bedroom has sea views, whilst the second bedroom (which can be converted from a twin to a double or vice versa) looks out onto the garden. This area of south-east Sicily is known for its gorgeous sandy beaches. Cirica beach is a few minutes’ walk away, and many of the local beaches have Blue Flag status, meaning the water and facilities are all top-notch. The small towns of Ispica and Pozzallo are both nearby and have shops, restaurants and bars to enjoy. Pozzallo is found on the coast, and there are several beach bars and lidos that are a good place to visit if you are after a sunlounger and umbrella for your day at the beach. You can also have a go at windsurfing or kitesurfing. South-east Sicily has some great food on offer as well. Nearby Modica is known for producing a unique and delicious chocolate its recipe going all the way back to the Aztecs. The Antica Dolceria Bonajuto is the most famous place to try this wonderful chocolate, as well as many other local sweet delicacies. You could also try the Chocolate Experience - a must for all chocolate-lovers. Those who like to spend their holidays active and surrounded by natural beauty will not be disappointed in this part of Sicily.
