Guy’s Urban Challenge
TfL Junior Roadwatch Scheme
Transport for London (TfL), the Metropolitan Police and Kingston Council have given children the opportunity to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding as part of a new road danger reduction education scheme called Junior Roadwatch. As part of this innovative new London scheme, primary school children are given the chance to take part in speed awareness sessions with the police near their school. Drivers caught speeding are pulled over by police officers and given the option of receiving an enforcement option – either a fixed penalty fine and points on their licence or attending a speed awareness course – and being reported for speeding or, if drivers are deemed suitable, speaking to the children. If they take this option, the driver will receive an educational message from the children and the council staff member. Pupils from Our Lady Immaculate Primary School in Surbiton joined police officers from the Roads and Transport Policing Command to tackle speeding in their area. The primary school pupils ask questions such as “Why do you think the speed limit is 20mph on this road?” and “Are you aware of the consequences of speeding?” – encouraging the driver to reconsider the speed they were driving at. Junior Roadwatch is part of Vision Zero which aims to eliminate death and serious injury from London’s streets and transport network.

Children who enjoy the CBBC show and Mums and Dads who remember the comics are all going to be excited to hear that Beano Studios and Selladoor Theatre Company are creating a family musical based on the TV show.
This summer, get set for an awfully big adventure as the National Theatre’s “unforgettable and delightful” (Guardian) retelling of JM Barrie’s classic tale takes flight at Troubadour White City Theatre, a brand-new theatre in West London, only minutes away from Westfield. When leader of the Lost Boys, Peter Pan, loses his shadow during a visit to London, headstrong Wendy helps him re-attach it. In return she is invited to Neverland, where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await. Bursting with magic, mischief, music and makebelieve, Sally Cookson’s wondrously inventive Peter Pan is a funny and moving version of a much-loved story for audiences of all ages and is playing for a limited season from 20 July. To book tickets visit www.peterpanonstage.com Photo credit: Steve Tanner
The family-friendly show will launch in 2020 on a yearlong tour of 40+ theatres and venues across the UK and Ireland. It is due to feature Dennis and Gnasher’s hallmark slapstick comedy and ageless humour delivered with a repertoire of songs.

Dennis & Gnasher: Unleashed! The Musical

The TV show stars Beano’s irrepressible hero Dennis, his dogged side kick Gnasher and fearless mates including Rubi, JJ, Pieface and his pet potato Paul. Together they cook up crazy plans, get in all sorts of scrapes and take on every challenge, no matter how big. Keep your eyes peeled for Dennis and the gang hitting a theatre near you.

School’s Out for Summer...
International Bat Night
International Bat Night is a popular annual event to draw public awareness to threatened bat populations across the world. Bat Night takes place in more than 30 countries on the last full weekend of August. This year, International Bat Night is on 24 and 25 August. Bats are mammals, and in fact they are the only mammals that can fly. Like other mammals, they have hair or fur on their bodies and are warm-blooded. In the UK, there are 17 different types of bats. Many people think bats are blind, but in fact they can see almost as well as humans. However, at night, their ears are more important than their eyes - they use a special sonar system called ‘echolocation,’ meaning they find things using echoes. Why not see and hear bats in their natural environment by taking part in a range of events organised by local bat groups, wildlife trusts, countryside rangers and other organisations across the country? In your local area, be sure to find a bat walk over the holidays. They often take place at dusk. Bat walk leaders have equipment specialised to hear the bat’s echoes and cries, called a bat detector.
Fantastic Feats
London’s long-standing history of architectural and engineering firsts will be celebrated this summer by a programme of more than 50 outdoor events, as part of the City of London Corporation’s Fantastic Feats: the building of London. Inspired by a number of key historical dates, the six-month programme of mostly free-to-attend events includes the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir Joseph William Bazalgette (1819–91), the civil engineer responsible for creating London’s sewer system, which was crucial in reducing the cholera epidemics in the capital, the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, the 125th anniversary of the completion of Tower Bridge and the joint 150th anniversary of the openings of Blackfriars Bridge and Holborn Viaduct. An exciting line-up of UK and international artists has been commissioned by the City of London Corporation to present street theatre, dance performances, exhibitions, guided walking tours, and art installations, including The People’s Tower (20 - 21 July) by French artist Olivier Grossetête, best known for using cardboard to build – and then, destroy - giant recreations of landmark buildings.

Leaders are Readers Summer School
The Leaders are Readers award-winning summer school is fun yet educational and available for any child from age 3½ to 13 years for four hours a day. Extended care is also available. All children, regardless of resources at home, tend to lose academic skills during the summer. At the Leaders are Readers Summer School, teaching maths and English for two hours daily allows for intense focus on these subjects. This can be a big help when learning challenging topics which might have been tough to handle during regular school, with many other subjects competing for lesson and homework time. For Reception and Years 1–6, all the foundational topics in a year’s curriculum are selected and taught thoroughly over 3 weeks. 11+, 8+, 7+,

Literacy charity, Bookmark Reading, is looking to partner with London primary schools that want help in providing reading support to children in years 1 to 3. Bookmark matches schools with vetted and trained volunteers from the local community, through their easy-to-use digital platform. The reading programme is designed to improve children’s literacy and enjoyment of reading in the early years, when it can have the greatest impact on their future progress. The charity’s six-week reading programme provides children with two, 30-minute face-to-face reading sessions each week with a volunteer, at the cost of just £1 per session (£12 per programme) for the school. Schools have the flexibility to decide how long children stay on the programme, with the option to extend to twelve weeks or more. The charity also offers five complimentary reading programmes to each school that signs up. The sessions are designed to support the reading schemes that teachers use in the classroom, as well as encourage reading for pleasure through literacy games and activities. Sessions are booked through Bookmark’s digital platform, meaning that schools simply need to choose dates and times that suit their timetable. The charity is currently recruiting schools in London for programmes starting in September 2019 and will be rolling the scheme out nationwide in 2020. Schools wishing to register their interest, or those who are interested in volunteering with Bookmark, should visit www. bookmarkreading.org.

From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton comes the all-new live-action adventure, Dumbo. The movie expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight. Circus owner Max Medici enlists former star Holt Farrier and his children Milly and Joe to care for a new born elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughing stock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V A Vandevere who recruits Dumbo for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant, until Holt learns that, beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets. Dumbo is released on Digital, DVD and Blu-Ray everywhere from 29 July 2019. For your chance to win one of five Dumbo DVDs, just tell us what kind of animal Dumbo is. See below for details of how to enter.
