Is There Room at the Inn?

Christmas is a time of mixed emotions. There’s fun, family time and there are festivities, alongside a sense of knowing that not everyone has a home and a family to call their own. Now, more than ever, you may be wondering if you could foster a child or young person and after 20 years as a leading Independent Fostering Agency, Chrysalis Care can provide all the advice and guidance you need to begin your fostering journey.

Lambeth Marks Holocaust Memorial Day

On Sunday 21 January from 3-4.30pm, the Kia Oval in Kennington SE11 will again host the Borough’s commemoration for the 2018 Holocaust Memorial Day in the Ashes Suite. The theme for 2018, set by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, is “The Power of Words”. The aftermath of the Holocaust and of subsequent genocides continues to raise challenging questions for individuals, communities and nations. HMD 2018 asks audiences to think about what happens after genocide and of our own responsibilities in the wake of such a crime. This year’s theme is broad and open ended - there are few known answers, but the questions are, unfortunately, as relevant as ever. The event will be opened by the Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Marcia Cameron, with closing words from Jasvir Singh OBE, family barrister, co-chair London Interfaith Forum and chair, City Sikhs. As in previous years there will be participation from local schools and choirs. Attendance is free and all are welcome. Entrance to the Kia Oval is via the Alec Stewart Gate.

Toyota Dream Car Art Competition

Toyota knows that when it comes to creativity, children know no boundaries. That’s the evidence from its annual Dream Car Art competition, which has produced such visionary creations as a van designed to cheer people up, a car which cleans the environment and a vehicle offering relief to those in need. Entries are now open for the UK round of the 2018 Dream Car Art Competition Young people are asked to draw or paint their dream car, presented against a background that shows where they imagine it being driven. The artwork should be accompanied by a short explanation of how the car works and what makes it special. Submissions must be hand-drawn or painted, not computer generated. Paper must be A3 size or smaller. Entry forms can be downloaded and more information, including inspiration from previous winning designs and full competition terms and conditions, can be found at the Dream Car Art Contest page at www.toyota.co.uk/dreamcar. The closing date for entries is 16 January. The age categories are: under 8, 8 to 11 years and 12 to 15 years. All entrants must live in the UK. For full details and terms and conditions refer to the Dream Car webpage, www.toyota.co.uk/dreamcar.

This December, Harlequins will celebrate an exhilarating decade of Big Games at the home of rugby; Twickenham Stadium. Since its beginnings in 2008, the Big Game series has rapidly risen in popularity and is now a firm fixture in the festive sporting calendar. In this year’s instalment Harlequins will face off with Northampton Saints and there is something of a score to settle between the two teams with Saints beating Harlequins in Big Game 7 back in 2014. The award-winning Big Game, however, is not just about the rugby. There is something for everyone whether you’re a rugby lover or not. In the week between Christmas and New Year, Big Game has prided itself on being a day out for the whole family as the rugby and entertainment world collide with spectacular musical performances, jaw-dropping pyrotechnics and entertainment for all the family. Big Game 10 is the perfect opportunity to round off Christmas by bringing together your family, friends or colleagues for a full day of entertainment both inside and outside the stadium. Tickets start from just £24 for adults and £14 for children and can be purchased by calling the Harlequins Ticket Office on 020 8410 6010 or on their website at www.quins.co.uk.

With four victories from their first four league games, 19 goals scored; none conceded, and impressive opening wins in both the Continental Cup and Champions League – Chelsea Ladies are the side to watch. Now playing at their new home, Kingsmeadow, Blues supporters have been treated to some memorable performances this campaign and are yet to see Emma Hayes’s side fail to win. Sitting top of the Women’s Super League ahead of their trip to Reading, Chelsea Ladies are the in-form side as we head into a busy December with some festive fixtures taking place at the home of the Blues. Chelsea Ladies earned an emphatic 6-0 league win over Yeovil Town Ladies back in October and James Sherwood’s side return to face the Blues once again in the Continental Tyres Cup on Sunday 3 December, kick-off 2pm. Next up for Hayes’s side will be WSL2 outfit Tottenham Hotspur who will face the Spring Series Champions on Wednesday 6 December for a Continental Cup fixture with a kick-off time of 7pm. And if those two fixtures weren’t enticing enough, the best is being saved till last with Manchester City taking the trip down South. Two of the best women’s teams in England will battle it out on Sunday 10 December from 6.30pm. All eyes will be on the biggest game of the league campaign so far and it is not be missed! Plus fans will be treated to a mini Christmas fair, with lots of festive entertainment. Buy tickets at chelseafc.com/ladiestickets

Spot the Difference

Mincemeat Shortbread Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C or Gas Mark 4. 2. Grease a 20 x 30 cm swiss roll style baking tray with butter and line it with greaseproof paper.

This is a delicious recipe for the Christmas period though you may find that you like it so much that you make it all year. It’s pretty simple but you should make sure you have an adult with you especially when you’re using the hot oven.

Ingredients

350g plain flour 225g unsalted butter 100g caster sugar 450g mincemeat (or 900g if you prefer more fruit. We did!) Icing sugar to dust Sifting the flour

3. Sift the flour into a large bowl. 4. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs (or use a food processor).

5. Stir in the sugar. 6. Sprinkle half the mixture onto the baking tray and press down lightly. 7. Spoon the mincemeat on top and spread as evenly as possible. This can

be a bit awkward so you may like to get your adult to help. It’s easier if you’re using the larger quantity of mincemeat. Be careful not to pick up the shortbread mixture. 8. Cover with the remaining mixture and press down lightly with the back of a fork. 9. Bake for 45-50 mins, until lightly browned. 10. Cool for 10 mins. Then cut into 24 squares. 11. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

spotting at least one. The top three was rounded off by starling and woodpigeon. The Birdwatch takes just one hour and teachers can pick any day during the first half of spring term to take part. It works across a wide age and ability range and there’s plenty of flexibility to run it as simply as teachers would like either as the centrepiece of cross-curricular studies, project work, or a way to improve their outdoor space. Many schools prepare for the event in advance by taking measures to give nature a home in their school grounds, such as putting up feeders and nest boxes and making bird cake. Seeing and counting the birds coming to their feeders during the Big Schools Birdwatch is the perfect reward for their efforts. Since its launch in 2002, more than 70 different species have been recorded in school grounds, ranging from starlings and house sparrows, to red kites and green woodpeckers. Register to take part in the 2018 RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch at rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch. Everything schools need to take part is available to download from the RSPB website. Harlequins on their METTLE

METTLE is a mental health campaign, launched by the Harlequins Foundation, linked to Harlequins Rugby Club, after it became the first professional rugby union club to sign the Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation. The aim of METTLE is to educate young people on mental resilience and equip them with the psychological tools they need to set goals, cope with challenging times, and communicate effectively. To launch the initiative, Harlequins carried out an eight week pilot programme involving 165 Year 6 pupils from four primary schools in the Richmond and Twickenham areas. The programme included practical and interactive sessions on a wide range of subjects including setting goals and managing emotions. The Harlequins Foundation intends to roll METTLE out to other schools in a bid to inspire children to think, feel and behave in an increasingly positive and resilient manner, and to teach them that it is OK to talk about how they feel. During the rest of the 2017/18 academic year, The Foundation intends to reach more than 2,000 children through the initiative. For more information, visit www.harlequins.foundation.

Big Schools’ Birdwatch

School children across the UK will be setting up bird feeders early next year, turning classrooms into bird hides and excitedly getting into position, to watch and count the birds in their school grounds for the 2018 RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch. The survey, which takes place during the first half of the spring term (2 January – 23 February), is the biggest wildlife survey in schools. Children are asked to spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in their outdoor space, then send their results to the RSPB. 73,000 school children and teachers took part in the birdwatch in 2017 counting more than 100,000 birds. The blackbird remained the most common playground visitor for the ninth year in succession with over 88% schools 8

On Demand in Schools

The National Theatre’s On Demand in Schools service is the theatre’s digital initiative offering acclaimed, curriculum-linked productions, free of charge, to schools across the country. Every primary and secondary school in the UK can access world-class theatre on demand. The latest production to be added to the On Demand selection is last Christmas’s acclaimed Peter Pan. This wondrously inventive production of JM Barrie’s much loved tale sees a wonderfully headstrong Wendy and her brothers accompany Peter to Neverland,

where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await and a riot of magic, music and make-believe ensues. Watch out for an amazing crocodile. On Demand in Schools complements trips to see live performances, enabling students to study plays day-to-day in their classroom. The plays are recorded in high definition in front of a live theatre audience by the National Theatre’s award-winning NT Live team and are available exclusively to UK schools. Teachers can study key scenes with students or show the full production over a number of lessons. Comprehensive learning resources produced by teachers and leading artists support each play. Out of School Activities Stagecoach Performing Arts

Every child needs the chance to explore their potential and have an outlet for their creativity. Give them the courage to be themselves at Stagecoach Performing Arts. None of us knows what the future holds, which is why it is so important for children to be prepared for the world with resilience and confidence. Stagecoach aims to deliver this through their extracurricular Performing Arts classes. By enabling children to unlock their potential, they offer not only specialised Performing Arts training but develop life skills that children need to adapt in the real world. The Performing Arts are so much more than singing, dancing and acting. Children of all abilities get the chance at Stagecoach to build confidence, make new friends with like-minded individuals and learn teamwork whilst being part of a community. The weekly 3-hour classes focus equally on singing, dancing and acting with an inspirational specialist teacher for each discipline. Eva Johnson, 12, and her brother Sam, 10, are now Stagecoach regulars after initially attending a two-week trial a couple of years ago. Their mum told Primary Times, “My children absolutely loved it. They came home after the first day and were full of chatter about the friends they’d made and the fun they’d had.” Classes run during school term time. Stagecoach offers classes in singing, dancing and acting and your child can see what it’s all about in a two-week trial during the term for youngsters aged 4 to 18.

best of intentions, parents may sometimes get things wrong. For example a water confident parent might think forcing their child’s face in the water is a good tactic to teach waterconfidence but it rarely is and often results in children refusing to allow water near their faces in future. Experienced swim teachers know how difficult it is to build trust with a child in the water and this process cannot be rushed. If a parent knows how to swim but doesn’t have any experience teaching it, the risk of pushing a child too fast at the beginning is very high. An out-of-pace start could make children feel unhappy and unsure about being in water and swimming in general. That’s why most people enroll their kids in swimming lessons because professional swim instructors have the right experience and training to know what to do and when to do different activities.

BE GOOD AT BEING YOURSELF

To find out more about taking a two-week trial please call your local Stagecoach.

Parents often ask how they can teach their child to swim, even if they are not good or confident swimmers themselves. Some parents question whether an external teacher or classes are really necessary. Parents teach their children many things every day and you may wonder why swimming should be any different. But teaching swimming can be more complex than most people think. Knowing how to keep the process of learning to swim progressive and efficient requires a mixture of science and creativity. If you know the science of swimming, the principles of teaching and have a good grasp of child psychology, plus, if you think your child will follow your instructions repeatedly without you or your child running out of patience, you may both find the learn to swim experience rewarding and successful. But it’s worth bearing in mind that there is a risk of getting it wrong and putting your child off swimming for a very long time or for a life time. Even with the 22

DVDs for Christmas All I Want for Christmas is You

Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You is the animated family film which follows little Mariah as she chases her dream of having a puppy of her very own. When Little Mariah sees the darling little puppy named Princess at the pet store, she suddenly knows exactly what she wants for Christmas. Before her Christmas wish can come true, she must prove that she can dog-sit her uncle’s dog, Jack, a scraggly rascal. In fact, he’s the worst dog in the county. Jack turns Mariah and her family’s perfect holiday preparations upside down in hilarious ways. It wasn’t exactly the Christmas she wished for, it was more than she ever wanted. Based on the iconic Christmas song and popular illustrated book of the same name, Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You, featuring Mariah’s music and narration, will be a family favourite for years to come. Available on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Download from 13 November, All I Want for Christmas is You is sure to bring Christmas cheer to anyone who watches it.

Transformers: The Last Knight

Hailed as “the best Transformers yet” (The Telegraph), director Michael Bay’s Transformers: The Last Knight is now available for home viewing. Transformers: The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war and Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving the future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving the world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager, Bumblebee, an English Lord and an Oxford Professor. There comes a moment in everyone’s life when they are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes and heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive - theirs, or ours. Transformers: The Last Knight is available to digitally download as well as on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™, Blu-ray 3D™, DVD and VOD.
